Man slams Xbox 720 always-online policy, destroys 360 with axe

Friday, 5 April 2013 08:57 GMT By Dave Cook

This is the greatest thing you will watch today, as a YouTuber lays down some serious truth-bombs about Microsoft creative director Adam Orth’s Twitter suggestion that people just “deal with it” when moaning about the Xbox 720′s always-connected nature. He then destroys his Xbox 360 with an axe.

Read Brenna’s news story on what Orth said before watching, as it’ll give you the background.

Thanks to Boogie2988 for the clip.

    If I were to rage like a lunatic and go batshit crazy on my property I’d first wait to see how much of the rumor was true. Although I can totally see Microsoft do that, it’s not officially announced and the extent of it is unknown.

    @17 Maybe, but Diablo 3 is one game with such policy, next-box would be a machine to run games. You could make an exception for one title because you know you’re not gonna be playing that all the time. There will be other games to play, but a console with always online security measure? That’s entirely different.

    You know, in the beginning, I thought he’s probably in character. As he went on, I started thinking that’s possibly just who he is. Reading that he actually IS in character… good for him. Although he should still really lose some weight, unless that’s some damn great SFX makeup there.

    Of course everything he says is still right, even though not particularly eloquent at points but… maybe that’s just because of the character too.
    And asking Microsoft to “fix it”?! What?! Fuck them!

    Guy needs to learn how to use an axe, you don’t simply hold both hands stiff, you swing it with your dominant hand near the top & once it starts moving you lower it towards the base for increased strength. :)

    Also, to the point, these are just rumours, sure the comment from that guy at MS swings toward it being true but I think we’ll all remain mentally healthier if we just wait for official word.

    I don’t understand what the problem is if the xbox needs to be connected to the internet all the time. Is it because you can’t afford a internet connection?? I know the US is considered third world country now with their economy but if you can’t afford games, internet access or the system why are you on news articles bashing the system?

    Is it because you may not be able to play second-hand games?

    Still not sure why all the haters are on here. I use my PS3 to watch BluRays and my Xbox for everything else. I can afford to buy new so I don’t care for second hand or pirated games.

    #38 2 years ago
  39. BHAZ0

    @GwynbleiddiuM

    Why is a always online security measure bad or wrong?? how does that effect the game play? ultimately that is all you want anyways so why does it matter? If it is because, it will limit if you can play pirated games then yes huge problem, but for the majority of us “suckers” who pay for games, and believe me, there are a lot of us, it doesn’t matter. It only effects poor fat americans who can’t afford to buy games.

    #39 2 years ago
  40. Christopher Jack

    @38, That crazy fool pretty much sums up the problem, it’s not just about affording the internet connection, it’s the quality of the connection in a majority of the world. I still need to buffer YouTube videos even at low resolutions & I’m on a relatively expensive plan. Granted this will change when Australia’s optic fibre finally rolls out my suburb but that’s probably over 2 years away. Not everyone can/wants to play online so why should they be dismissed? When I’m playing an immersive single player game such as a horror, I don’t want to be spammed with messages & invites.

    #40 2 years ago
  41. DSB

    @38 The US has a lot of rural areas with genuinely shitty internet. Consider the fact that some providers still offer people 56k modems and charge the same for that as they would have in 1998. That’s actually the case in the suburbs of some major cities.

    That’s what makes this an incredibly bad idea. It’s hard to believe that Microsoft would want to limit their audience to those American gamers living in cities.

    #41 2 years ago
  42. theevilaires

    75% of the U.S. is rural. This country is so far behind its not funny, but its mainly because the people are ignorant and afraid of change so they choose not to learn anything new or invest into new technologies. Thats the way the U.S. Government wants it too.

    #42 2 years ago
  43. BHAZ0

    @40 & @41

    Legit concerns, but again, as a business, they are targeting their core audience which does have a stable/high bandwidth interenet access. Why penalize your core market for a small margin that can’t meet the requirements.

    And for single player games, my understanding of DMR and content security authorization, is that the data sent/retrieved is a very small packet that is sent during a section load screen that would not require a huge amount of bandwith. It’s just a handshake, as small as a email. If the handshake takes took long the problem is with the developer not optimizing the data packet and not MS.

    @38 BHAZ0

    there is a different between ‘always online’ and ‘always needed online’… micke$oft goes for always needed, that means no online no game playing or used games for that matters.

    if you dont understand the different your brain have the xbox rot…

    #45 2 years ago
  46. SlayerGT

    As much as folk would like to say whether it is, or isn’t a good idea to be always on, MS knows its activity rates and its Gold members status. If they feel those two things are capable of sustainable growth maybe they do make it always on.

    #46 2 years ago
  47. DSB

    @43 It just doesn’t make any sense to me that the Xbox core audience all live in cities, or somehow everywhere with great internet.

    Even if they did, it wouldn’t make any sense not to offer your product to everybody else as well. You’re not looking for people to re-adopt your console, you’re also looking for brand new users.

    That’s why I think this whole thing is a ruse. Nobody thinks like that if they want to grow their business.

    The console game is all about install base. The biggest install base also sells the most videogames (unless it belongs to Nintendo). They need everyone they can get.

  50. BHAZ0

    @45 Try to get your facts straight, the always needed for the system is different then the DMR security needed for the game and MS is not demanding all developers have games that demand DMR, that is a developer/studio decision. It is there for them to use cause the system is always online. The DMR availability wasn’t something MS came up with on their own, the major studios/developers asked/cried for it as way to prevent used games and pirated games from curbing thier revenue stream. So try to stick to business ethics here and not chilish rants.

    If you can’t afford new games, then you can’t play. Does the studio care, no, cause they don’t see a penny from pirated games or used games. For those that complaine, they don’t care.

    #50 2 years ago
  51. IL DUCE

    Lol, this dude needs to get out more…I have no problem with the always-on internet connection, since internet “speed” shouldn’t really matter much as mentioned about rural areas…it may suck for some people like he said about the army or poor countries, but idk how you can afford a $500 console if you can’t even afford basic internet

    #51 2 years ago
  52. DSB

    @51 Lots of people buy 360′s they can’t afford in America. Financing and accumulation of debt is like a popular sport in the US.

    It’s not just a question of whether you can afford internet though, it’s a question of the quality of the internet you’re getting, which is entirely at the mercy of companies that may not give a rats ass about you, or the quality of your service.

    If Faceless Megacorporation buys up most of the cables in your local area, but doesn’t exactly find you worthy of their utmost attention, then chances are you will have significant shortages indefinitely.

    Then you have places like the South where sudden thunderstorms are quite likely to rob you of your internet for at least some time. Of course that’s also a risk with your power, but in my experience the internet goes first.
