Beyond: Two Souls only “a little bit more expensive” than Heavy Rain

Beyond: Two Souls appears to have incredible production values, but Quantic Dream boss David Cage says it’s got quite a modest budget.

“I don’t know if the budget is public but it’s been a very, very reasonable price,” Cage told CVG.

“We do very complex games, but I don’t think they’re very expensive compared to others out there.”

Cage said Beyond: two Souls is “a little bit more expensive” than Heavy Rain was. Sony has not released details of either game’s budget, but Cage said despite the rebuilt engine and Hollywood talent, Quantic Dream doesn’t run up a massive bill due to sensible business practices.

“The project is cheaper because we’ve got better at what we do. We’re very tools-centric and we pay close attention to our costs. We don’t do anything crazy with the finances, we pay correctly but we don’t have sports cars, boats or the rest of it. We run the company very seriously,” he said.

Beyond: Two Souls is a PlayStation 3 exclusive due in October.

The cost of developing games like this on the PS4 are going to be astronomical. You saw how Square Enix couldn’t reach the sales target on Tomb Raider, even though sales were past 2 million….

@1 False, development costs will be bigger depending on the project, but not astronomical. Fox Engine at GDC proved next-gen can be cost efficient.

Square Enix is an isolated pitiful situation. Tomb Raider was over-budgeted, apparently restarted numerous times, and had an ENTIRE team devoted JUST to make that wasted multiplayer.

Don’t be so quick to judge all games based off of Tomb Raider’s results. Square Enix had that game in development for over 4 years, it was going to make a loss from the beginning.

@2 – He’s just quick to judge anything that isn’t Nintendo.

@4 Oh please don’t bring that IGN crap over here, they sound like hippies continuously chanting it :) also just pretend Francis doesn’t exist its very difficult to fight facts with him especially if your attacking his beloved Nintendo :D

I kinda can’t help but wonder just what black magic Quantic Dream works in to keep costs down, and quality up? And this really doesn’t answer that question. Though I’d bet that little extra cost he spoke of went into bringing in the Hollywood talent Beyond’s got.

@9 Yes your not a hippie like the two above me :) Basically its a catchphrase from IGN (not exactly sure how it started) and coincidently this game is called BEYOND: Two Souls, you should really see the IGN community continuously saying BEYOND like hippies :D :D :D

BEYOND is good. No need to hate BEYOND :D

Btw, no need to worry about PS4 dev costs. KZ:SF has a team of 150 whereas KZ2 had a team of 125, that’s not a big increase considering KZ PS4 team had to work on prototype hardware and develop a entire new engine for this.
Still, better than developing for a platform on which your game will bomb :D
