New mobile devices will out-perform current-gen consoles, says Nvidia boss

Monday, 1st April 2013 23:51 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Nvidia’s senior vice president of content and technology Tony Tamasi believes the next wave of mobile devices will be more powerful than current-generation consoles.

“The PS3 and Xbox 360 are barely more powerful than mobile devices. The next click of mobile phones will outperform [them],” Tamasi said, according to a Bit-Tech report.

Tamasi was apparently referring to whatever technology Nvidia brings out in succession to its latest powerful mobile processor, the Tegra 4.

Nvidia hasn’t had much good to say about consoles lately; despite its close relationship with the chip manufacturer over the last decade, Sony chose rival AMD to power the PlayStation 4, and Tamasi said recently that Nvidia itself chose not to get involved.

Thanks, Eddy.

Of course you can. And it would taste a lot better.

I highly doubt that it will be far more advanced, but even if the Vita and the 3DS are more powerful than the 360, it might be possible

I really think this Tamasi guy is not “Nvidia’s senior vice president of content and technology” but “Nvidia’s chief PR manager”.
No question next gen of mobile tech will surpass current gen consoles, after like 7 years. It also means they will overtake Nvidias flagship desktop GPUs of that time.

Btw, Tegra remains weaker than its competition. Both Qualcomm and ARM have launches planned this year that will easily surpass Nvidias offering.

Mobile phones are primarily communication devices. Even if mobile phones will surpass current gen consoles its totally bullshit anyway.

Core gamers will take full potential of this? How long will the battery last? Shit I hardly do anything on my phone and the battery is dead before I know it.
    Samsung S2 btw.

Yeah gaming on mobile phones is a casual thing.

Sorry but no. The fastest mobil ATM sports a Intel Atom processor. That is no where close to current consoles. That phone is event “cheating” by using a laptop/stationary cpu, next gen phone processors won’t bring you THAT much of a boost.

nVIDIA says a lot of things…. I would like to see any devise like that to come up to standards of Uncharted visuals for example.. not going to happen any time soon, doesn´t matter how the games look on handheld it´s just never going to be the same as a console, deal with it ffs!
