A real-time Unreal Engine 4 tech demo running on PS4 hardware

Saturday, 30 March 2013 01:28 GMT By Phil Owen

Earlier today we talked about how the Unreal Engine 4 games won’t be on the Wii U, and now it’s time to look at what that engine can do on a PS4. The following video is a tech demo rendered in real time. Take a look.

Maybe not quite as real-looking as the FOX Engine or the Killzone PS4 demo, but there are some real graphical complexities in there. It’s impressive, and it’s readily apparent that current-gen hardware couldn’t handle this load.

    Looks good but seems… outdated.

Imo, PC version looks 10x better – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8v3GA9jSasQ – see the particles flying around?!

Well this doesn’t look special to me. I mean, don’t get me wrong, looks cool, but those falling parts of the wall(?) and that smash animation, etc look really terrible at best. The other tech demo looks way better linked above. Dunno what it’s running on, but that’s what I call fantastic :)

ANimations are not what is being demostrated in the demo. Just like when Unreal three was being shown off did you think that Bulletstorm, Bioshock: Infinite were going to made on the same engine?

Its a tool for the developers to use. This demo was made by Epic within a month.

Linked video does look better, but 10X better is a bit of an overstatement.

Though, in all fairness, it’s always easier to make futuristic machines/robots/cities look better than more common/natural/organic things like temples/lava/landscapes because there’s far fewer examples of those in the real world. Human faces are the hardest of all because we see them most often, whereas you don’t see that many giant flying killer robots.

Actually the Infiltrator demo was running on a PC with GTX680 as mark rein said and new version of elemental demo was running on PS4 with low quality physics and particel effects and some low textures + low laiva effect and some frame rate drops

    #9 2 years ago
  10. Dragon246

    Some facts-
PC Elemental demo from last year also ran on same hardware as the Infiltrator demo, and elemental is now on PS4. Epic has categorically said that they expect Infiltrator level graphics on next gen consoles, as on fixed hardware, optimizations will significantly improve graphics.

I’m ok to live without some particles and save an average of 250€ every year for at least 6 years to update a PC.
    Oh, and spare myself Windows.

    #12 2 years ago
  13. lubu

    @12

you can install linux for free (or cheaper versin of windows) and spend 600$ for a pc even more powerfull than nextgen consoles and you can play all the nextgen games on it at least for 5 years. so there is not 250€ every year.

some particles ? by some you mean lots of particles (they even cut the whole mountain scene because of that) and smooth frame rate and great physics and higher resolution with higher texture resolutions and more detailed environments with hq shadows and no jaggies at all ?

or spend 600$ for better graphic card like 7970 or read some digitalfoundry articles or tom’shardware.

bytheway untill next 6 or 7 month you can buy them even cheaper or wait 1 year with the same price buy even more powerfull machine

    @lubu
Console are optimized, without heavy OS overheads and stuff.
A PS4 is way more powerful than a rig you can assemble with the same stuff.
Also, no game on PC will ever use the 100% of the power and won’t ever be optimized.

    #17 2 years ago
  18. Samoan Spider

@Lubu Most people should know by now that you can get equivalent or far improved specs for the money, but people don’t want the hassle. That’s the point.
I own a PC because right now I’m typing on here but in about 3 minutes I’ll be playing Metro 2033 (hooked on it now thanks to some commenters the other day!). Choices. That’s my reason for owning it.
Other people just like to push a disc in and play (which wont happen so quickly next-gen kids).
I can’t have spent more then £500 on my PC including monitor and windows license (Windows 8 allows a £50 upgrade from an unlicensed copy of Vista or Win7 so is not a high cost barrier to entry really is it?)
But I cannot pretend that games on my PC will look as good or run as smoothly as next-gen consoles. It’s been considered that unless you have a mighty beast of a PC, chances are you’ll be behind the times for the next couple of years until you upgrade when parts get cheaper. So this whole consolez suckz attitude of cock waving isn’t helping PC gaming get recognition as anything other than a bunch of spoilt ginger kids with specs in a dark basement.

Disclaimer: Nothing against gingers, kids, spoilt kids, specs, consoles or PC’s. Anyway, off to play Metro on very high at 1050p60fps :P

No offence, but that site and article is bs. What do you expect from a site called ‘pc gamer’. Check out neutral views. With optimizations, next gen can nearly match present gen top cards like 680, epic said that himself.
So no, unless you are spending over 800-1000$ on PC, its impossible to match next gen right now.

    @18,
This console sucks attitude of PC Elitists is why no one likes listening to them.
Pc will never beat consoles in price per performance, 2 simple reasons for that-
    1. Console games are waaay better optimized that pc versions. So its just impossible for equally priced pc to match a console.
    2. Consoles at launch are sold at a loss, so they definitely pack much better hardware than their price.

^ Ps4 has less particles and less shadow bokh with less details. so much for next generation.

    @Sony246,
“No offence, but that site and article is bs. ”

That site is not BS. they completely nailed the specs and did the same machine power hungry like PS4 or next XBOX.

Next year there will be videocards from Nvidia. 700 series which alone will be more powerfull then one PS4 machine.

Sorry, but PS4 is a piece of garbage for 300 or 400 US. Deal with it.

And you know what? 90% of hardcore gamers does not care. Gaming is expensive. As long as I can play my games on max with 60 fps in 1080p or 2560×1440 i’m fine and that is important and “cost” has nothing to do with what I like or anyone likes. I have next gen for money where hardware is worth it. Consoles on the other hand sell a POS system that in reality is last generation with cheap PC hardware arch.

“With optimizations, next gen can nearly match present gen top cards like 680, epic said that himself.”

    1) show me where Epic said that

    2) With optimizations they won’t match GTX 680 or GTX Titan. NEVER. PS4 will have crappy 7 series videocard.

It’s the same story when Nvidia showed it’s graphics card for PS3, but at the same time they presented GTX 8800 that is enough for all games this generation for a PC to play in 720p with 30 frames per second.

    LOL
Every PS4 will be the same, every “nextbox” will be the same.
No PC will be the same, so games won’t ever be optimized by devs (then community modding will help).
I know a PS4 will be worse than a PC but I don’t care about some particles more or a slightly better texture.
I surely don’t want to spend my life trying to catch up the specs of a PC.
With 250 € a year I can play at least 5 games more, so…who cares about the more powerful PCs.
Have fun, if you manage to not be disappointed at running x game at 58 fps instead of the 60 fps you expect.
I know I will have loads of fun with my less powerful PS4 anyway :)

    @15
Thats BS, its debunked right there in the comments:

    Phenis says:
    02:44am February 21 2013
I’m sorry, but this article is BS.
To get things straight before I go over my reasoning: I’m a PC enthusiast, not a console fanboy. I’ve never owned a console. First off, on RAM:

“Given that the next Xbox will supposedly launch at 8GB, it only seems right that Sony also sticks in a full 8GB of GDDR 5 RAM. Impressive, but it seems like massive overkill to me, so I’ll recommend 8GB of DDR3 RAM.” You failed to note that it’s actually impossible to include high-speed GDDR5 RAM with this system, instead choosing to call it “overkill.” When you’re recommending parts to people, at least tell them the truth about why you chose a specific part, rather than feeding them lies.

My second gripe with the article is found in the “other” section: The rest of the components you can put together from any number of budget parts. So long as the PSU has a PCIe power connector for your graphics card you’re good to go. With that and a cheapo chassis you can have the lot for another $50.”
You’re honestly expecting people to find their own power supply when they don’t even have the know-how to choose a graphics card? None the less, you’re saying that you can fit a high quality power supply and a decent case in a $50 budget, which you can’t. Even more shocking to me where you say “as long as the PSU has a PCIe power connection for your graphics card you’re good to go.” This is just downright wrong. There is much, much more to buying a power supply than the connections it offers. There are too many low quality power supplies out there with that PCIe power connection included, even though they would literally catch on fire if you came close to providing the
power needed for the graphics card and (inefficient) CPU, destroying not only the unit itself, but also every other part in the computer.

And then you go on to say that Optical is dead:
“I’m assuming you have a display, as I’d assume a PS4 buyer would have a TV, and you’ll notice I’m not including a Blu-ray drive here. Not because I’m trying to stick to a price-point, but because optical media’s dead, man. We’ve got digital downloads and operating systems that can be installed from USB sticks, so why would we?”
Sure, maybe it is dead. But guess what? Windows still comes on a disk! How can you expect a first time builder to know that he has to download it and prepare a flash drive to boot off of for the
installation? Are you prepared to have a bunch of poor souls coming back to you crying that they can’t find where to put the disk?

Finally, you don’t even include a legitimate copy of Windows. Add $100 on to your budget, buddy. If you’re going to tell people they can build a comparable PC to a console for a similar price, don’t lie about it. You’re looking at at least $50-$80 for a decent PSU on its own, another $30-$50 for case of acceptable quality, and $100 more for an OEM license of Windows. I’m not including an optical drive
in there for argument’s sake, and you’re still roughly $250 more than your so called “$600 rig.”
    -Razer

Its a PC fanboy site doing some ego damage control. They blatantly leave out stuff because they cant match it, say stuff isnt needed -again, because they cant match it- and forget vital stuff just to reach their BS price. They’re lying, through and through.

You got that so right :D

“i see noone taking advantage of the hardware like the Fox engine.”
Care to explain this? I was honestly more surprised when he said GZ demo was a PS3 level PC, but I have my doubts. This demo is confirmed running on PS4 Prototype, so I will wait until Kojima shows the engine running on PS3/360.
    Quote from Epic-
“The implication Epic was making in revealing the Elemental demo running on PS4 development hardware was obvious – that today’s cutting-edge PC tech demo is tomorrow’s run-time on next-gen console hardware. Asked directly if its brand new Infiltrator demo could run on next-gen console, Epic vice president Mark Rein replied:

“Well, let’s put it this way. Last year we saw the Elemental demo running on the same piece of hardware and this year we saw the Elemental running on PS4, so I’d say draw your own conclusions… The feeling around Epic on Infiltrator is that this is the pipeline, this is the way we’re going to work, making games that are going to have this kind of feel to them, this much detail, this many shadows and it’ll just get better and better as we optimise the engine further and further.”

That’s an exciting prospect, because Infiltrator – running on the same high-end PC host hardware Epic chose for the original Elemental unveiling – is spectacular, featuring levels of detail, effects work, lighting, cloth simulation and animation beyond anything we’ve seen running on current-gen technology.”

Also, there you go kid, Happy? Remember next-gen hasn’t even launched, so games on consoles will improve so much, just look at current gen as an example- from UC1 to UC2.

Can you post that PC Shop image again?

Can I just ask, can you guys buy games for consoles as cheap as on PC? Coz, for example, right now I can get digital version of Infinite for 35$ on PC. While if I want it for 360 or PS3 I have to pay 90$ in my local store. If I buy it cheaper from abroad I still have to pay import taxes on the package so it doesn’t make much difference.

So in the end my 1200$ PC I had for 4 years now is actually a much better solution for me because the games for it are so much cheaper. I’m actually saving a fair amount of money by playing on PC.

Also I really don’t care that much about the pure visuals and this kind of tech demo videos. What bothers me about current gen consoles is the fact they are limiting some gameplay and immersion stuff. E.g. Skyrim. All that 5vs5 fights to save the world or generally empty roads and towns. When it would be so much more immersive if the battles could be at least 50vs50 and towns crowded with ppl. Thankfully PC modding community can fix that.

Wow, that PC tech demo looked amazing! Now that’s what I call next gen!

I was slightly underwhelmed by the PS4 version, but we already know that the PS4 can do better than what they’ve shown here.

Even Killzone looked better, and it was (apparently) a fully working level.

Sorry if you read this, Mark Rein, but UE4 seems to be lacking something in terms of scalability…

  33. Lengendaryboss

@Dragon Ok it was phrased wrong what i meant to say was most developers/publishers didn’t take advantage of current gen hardware. I know certain Next Gen titles match the visual fidelity of last gen titles (Killzone Shadow Fall/MGS 5 i couldn’t care less if he is lying about platforms as well). If (Big If) the fox engine does indeed work on PS3/Xbox360 then many developers/publishers (Not including first party teams) haven’t taken full advantage of the hardware. Lastly don’t call me “Kid” i don’t recall getting less than 5 years younger.

“Console are optimized, without heavy OS overheads and stuff.”

true, but you don’t know about nextgen consoles OS, it might be heavier than before.

“Also, no game on PC will ever use the 100% of the power and won’t ever be optimized.”

they are lots of games that optimized for pc ecxept some cheap ports like assassin’s creed 3 but i played all of them really smooth 60fps1050

    @19
“With optimizations, next gen can nearly match present gen top cards like 680, epic said that himself.”

yeah and they call this speechs PR bs. ofcurse they can lower the resolution, use low textures and stuff to mach somthing like that, just like elemental tech demo.

“This console sucks attitude of PC Elitists is why no one likes listening to them.”

i’m actually a console gamer but for the nextgen i guess i’m moving to pc mainly because of kickstarter projects but other multiplat games are welcome.

Maybe Epic made the video to show UE4 is finally running on PS4, not to make direct comparison. I would like more explanation from Epic about it.

The PS4 will be out at the end of the year so there’s still time to optimize the engine for the console, we all know 1st generation of games on console are not really optimized. Sure PC will always be more powerful, but nobody can denied the huge leap between the PS3 and PS4.

The important thing is to have fun and enjoy what we have.

I’m really interested in the PS4 so far and specs alone can’t be the only deciding factor.

    @Legend,
I am using “kid” for Erth here, you could see that.
Sorry for misunderstanding. Should have phrased that better.
I am waiting for Fox Engine to (hopefully)blow us out.

    @lubu,
Again, I was referring to other guy who came afterwards (erth), you could see that. I didn’t say that to you now did I?
Now, read what I said there, “nearly matching” top current-gen pc hardware, and that is not an exaggeration. DF is saying that himself. Elemental Demo was running on same PC config last year, and now on next-gen hardware, NOT same , NEARLY same.
Also I think you get that the PCGamer link is bs. Just read the Gekidami comment.
“True, but you don’t know about nextgen consoles OS, it might be heavier than before.”
No, they are very light, always. Definitely not as heavy as Windows, unless MS will use that in nextbox.
“they are lots of games that optimized for pc ecxept some cheap ports like assassin’s creed 3 but i played all of them really smooth 60fps1050″
Yeah, tell that after PC games get a graphic boost like between UC1 and UC2. Consoles games are heavily optimized, no PC games are done to that extent, because PC games are made to run across a range of configs.
Again, no one is saying console games will look more beautiful than pc versions, but 600$ pc doing that is bs, and are wrong on that regard. What do you say on that?
    @Erth kid,
    Did you ran away again?

Surging PC game sales won’t wither when new consoles appear, expert says

Despite sagging PC hardware sales, the market for PC games continues to show strong growth.

The PC gaming market reached $20 billion in 2012, a healthy increase of eight percent over the previous year, the PC Gaming Alliance (PCGA) revealed this week at a news conference held in San Francisco.

More than a third of those sales ($6.8 billion) were fueled by increased interest in PC gaming in China, David Cole, an analyst with DFC Intelligence in San Diego, said in a statement.

“In spite of media focus on mobile games and struggling social network games, there are now over 1 billion PC gamers worldwide and that number will continue to grow as more PCs connect online,” he added.

International markets are contributing mightily to the surging game market, according to Scott Steinberg, a video game industry consultant with TechSavvyGlobal.com.

“Growth isn’t just in the U.S.,” he told PCWorld. “It’s Brazil, Russia, India, China, Turkey, Germany—across the board internationally, you’re seeing massive growth in PC gaming. It’s experiencing a renaissance that we haven’t seen in many decades.”

Mobility—as in other areas of electronic entertainment—is affecting the PC gaming market, too, PCGA Executive Director Erik Noreke observed in a statement.

“We are experiencing a shift in the gaming industry,” he said.

PS4 Vs PC Unreal Engine 4 Demon Knight Comparison

Coming out of GDC 2013 Epic Games has let loose a series of new technical demos showcasing the power of the Unreal Engine 4. While this tech demo is a year old for the PC Master Race, who got to see the power of the UE4 on a single GTX 680, this PS4 demo obviously shows as much potential for the console as it does the age-old video card that the console will be sporting.

At first the PS4′s Unreal Engine 4 demo looks like it contains the same kind of parity as the PC Demon Knight demo, but after things really start cooking and the effects start flying, we begin to see that the parity is not the same and there is an obvious gap in the visual fidelity between the PS4 real-time demo and the PC demo from a year ago.

Some of the bigger differences between the two demos comes into play around the 50 second mark, where the doors blast open and you can clearly see where the volumetric snow particles have been replaced with that ugly old frost effect that we’ve been seeing all throughout this current generation of gaming.

    http://www.cinemablend.com/games/PS4-PC-Unreal-Engine-4-Demon-Knight-Comparison-54146.html

The liquid lava effects also show a slight disparity between the PC and PS4 versions, with the PC version indubitably being more detailed and smooth and the PS4 version having slightly less detail. And you can obviously see where some of the global shadow casting has been removed in the PS4 version, where-as with the PC version all the reflective shadows from every corner and crevice shows up in full-scale detail.

I think the most obvious difference is between the physics. Man, the physics for the PS4 version looks pretty sad compared to the physics capabilities of the PC version, especially with many of the fractal chunks being much larger for the PS4 compared to the pieces and chunks of rock that fall and break into much smaller pieces and with greater fluidity on PC.

Now some of you may not think this is that big of a deal, but this will play a huge factor in things like physical deconstruction of buildings, vehicles, characters and more. This will also play a big part in games where you might use psychic effects to affect physical debris and environmental details. Fewer on-screen moving objects will truly limit the potential of some games, depending on their design scope, which can affect the kind of immersion some developers may be going for.

Session is divided into the first half and the second half, the first half, the cloud gaming system ” GeForce GRID but had become commentaries and foundation of “because there was little novelty to its contents, he kept to post only one slide want to get up.

Slides shown below, which compares the chronological order in 3D performance GPU and stationary game machines and manufactured by NVIDIA. For example, the most recent ” GeForce GTX TITAN it is so on the “PlayStation 4 (or less, PS4) and 3-fold when compared to.
That a single GPU is better because the faster evolution on the whole, the performance difference will spread further in the future is expected. I mean, we are also growing significance of running the game on the GeForce GRID If that happens.

However, the reader’s eye is drawn to, I think perhaps elsewhere. Yes, Xbox next generation is here – but it says “Xbox 720″ in this slide, not the announcement came from Microsoft and become such a name – is placed in the down position less PS4 is have.
NVIDIA has not said anything about the relationship between this position, it would be the source of the data, such as this has become a company consultant · Jon Peddie Research, that there is a reasonable basis. (At the venue of GDC 2013, but rumors are flowing “Xbox next generation will be a little closer to the casual” that related article ), … Well.

I digress. Under the title of “Redesigning Game Engines for GeForce GRID” (re-design a game engine for GeForce GRID), in the second half of the session, Mr. Brent Oster of NVIDIA, has said the idea to target GeForce GRID, the game on the new server.

Game servers in the cloud until now, had become a form that only the number of users, and then start the client application on the server, streaming the results. If 100 people are connected, a client of this game would not work on the server side 100.

In contrast, the “multi-player game premise, efficiency might become a common body well to game programs, so that if you isolate the input and output part story” that was out of the past. If the same server, so the server just complete the processing of any data exchange, online multiplayer title and title of the type that is more than one person access the same data, the convenience is good for everything.
Also, if for example, if you want to reuse a lot of character out of realistic modeling, the results of operations for each client, I will be able to efficiently process.

    GeForce GRID
“If you can render a large farm, the future is not a dream as well as games with real-time ray tracing,” he said, as close to the movement of the direction such, Mr. Oster, create for GeForce GRID Based on the above I showed a screen shot was of “Unreal Tournament 3″. It is an example of a 4-minute game thread is running one.

first off I want to say there is talks of another rescission happening another bobble. Which will must likely hit Microsoft and Sony hard. Recommend going to the zerohedge,Trend or drudge report. This means that console game devs and publishers will be going bankrupt again.

recommend people stuck on food buy gold and sliver. Also but small amounts of bit coin. I think that game publishers should support bit coin as well. So people hit by the rescission finical woes can use bit coin. Anyone hear about banking system stealing people money in Cyprus. As people lose their money they will be looking for cheaper games. Guess where they will go? pc,mobile and tablets

Lets not forget the price hick on consoles now. From $60 dollars to $70 dollars. Added to that the economy is not healthy look at Spain,Greece France Possible US with it’s job growth and economy.

secondly consoles are now competing with mobile phones tablets and I pads for the causal gamers. That leaves the hardcore gamers with the money and guess where they are going migrating to the pc. In fact some people are saying that pc gaming is having renaissance or returning to it’s glory days.

On top of that you have vale, razer and Invidia working to bring to PC gaming to the masses. I also hear TV companies are also trying to bring PC gaming to the masses with smart tvs too as well.

Sony Microsoft and AMD are working at lose. There is the chance that AMD could go bankuprt.

A Look Ahead at GDC: It’s Mobile vs. Consoles in Fight for Game Developers’ Attention

If San Francisco appears to be even geekier than usual this week, there’s a reason: The annual Game Developers Conference is taking over the Moscone Center today through Friday.

AllThingsD will be there keeping an eye on two questions in particular: How is the business of mobile games changing, and how are the makers of consoles and other physical media responding to mobile’s ascendance?

This year’s conference also promises to at least touch on the growing relevance of women in the gaming community, and will also highlight the gap between small independent games studios and the larger legacy companies that are finding different degrees of success in staying relevant as their industry continues to expand and fracture.

If you only read one gaming statistic this week, let it be this one: In a pre-conference survey, GDC 2013’s organizers found that 58 percent of gaming professionals attending either last year’s conference or this one plan to release their next game on smartphones or tablets. That’s a tad greater than commitments to the Xbox 360, Microsoft’s next console, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U and Wii combined, which together garnered “next game” pledges from 56.5 percent of developers.

Nevertheless, interest in gaming hardware is still strong, particularly for established consoles and for the Android-based consoles Ouya and GameStick, both of which bested the next Xbox and the PlayStation 4 when those same survey respondents were asked what platforms most excited or interested them.

    Stay tuned for more!

Blah blah blah. So very boring. This conversation has happened again and again, at the end of every console generation, and it will happen AGAIN at the end of the PS4 generation, as well. Consoles start showing their age, PC gaming picks up, everyone starts talking about how it’s time for PC’s to take the lead, new console gets released, PC gaming takes a beat seat, until the consoles start showing their age. Rinse and repeat. It’s so very, very boring. If there was any positive about this gen lasting as long as it did, it’s that it only took seven years for this conversation to happen AGAIN, unlike previously, when it’d be every five years.

I for got to add high production costs have went up Now selling 3 million games is not profitable no more on consoles.

Why Can’t 3.4 Million in Sales Be Profitable for a Game?

I’ve been waiting days to cover this story because I wanted to better frame my approach. See, 3.4 million copies sold of a game are some pretty lofty numbers. Sure, maybe that’s a poor number for say, a console Zelda release, but it’s still a profitable number. Tomb Raider’s original popularity may never be matched, but since the 90′s the franchise has been pretty pathetic in sales numbers, failing to even top 1 million.

In comes a highly touted and well reviewed reboot of the whole franchise. It moved 3.4 million physical copies across all platforms, the most the series has moved since the 90′s. In addition, if you add digital sales, you’re likely looking at a number north of 4 million total sales. That ranks it as the 3rd best selling game in the series and probably when it’s all said and done, potentially the 2nd best. That, to me, seems like a very successful reboot. The fans are raving, the critics are raving, people bought the product, and things seem fine.

Until we find out that Square lost money on the project. So much so they themselves called it a failure. So, what’s wrong?

For starters, if this was a one off issue you could simply just say that Square spent way too much on the product and expected sales numbers far higher than are feasible for a series that back in the 90′s, with far less platforms and a more focused gaming community, best selling game sold just north of 5 million copies. However, they had two other notable failed games last year that sold well and other publishers have experienced the same ordeal. Even Nintendo sold under expectations for Skyward Sword, though they didn’t complain about any financial loss, suggesting it was still marginally profitable.
You see, the problem I am noticing in the industry comes down to the allocation of funding. Developers are under an impression they have to push the bleeding edge of capability even in generation 7 consoles to generate interest. Beyond that, they fell like they need to drop 50+ million dollars on marketing just to get a game noticed. They are simply spending money foolishly for a quicker turn around to meet “supposed” demand.

Some companies are notorious for taking their time, bucking that trend. Take, for example, Nintendo and Valve. Both companies have some mega block buster titles, and neither of them seem to be in a big rush to get these games out. They are ready when they are ready. They don’t balloon the budgets to get it done faster. They don’t worry about pushing the abosolute maximum out of a system. They just want a game that, in general, is a fantastic experience to play for various different reasons. That’s the first priority. Everything else is secondary, including pushing hard deadlines.

Pikmin 3 went from a launch game to a launch window. Now a launch window game to possibly a summer release. Valve has been teasing Half-Life 3 here and there for years, yet they wont be giving any sort of exact date until it’s good to go. Both of these companies are relatively healthy, with Nintendo being the one worst off because they are still pushing hard in the hardware business – but either case neither company is losing billions. Not like Square Enix.

In the case of the ever growing gaming budgets, developers and publishers are under this impression that the more you spend, the more sales you’ll get. Despite the fact that model has never been true. They look at games like Call of Duty, which sell 20+ million copies annually, and think they too can balloon their budget and get that same success. Call of Duty’s success never started with a massive budget. It started with a decent following from previous World War II games combined with a more modernized war shooter that built upon the multiplayer aspects Halo introduced to consoles. They took what was working and made it work even more. They essentially created Goldeneye from the N64 era, and they are going to milk it until people no longer want it.

The thing is, they can balloon their budget, because the revenue was realized before the decisions was made. I work for a small time software company and the biggest no-no in any budget plan is spending money before you have it – especially spending large amounts of money before you have it. It’s true that you do need to take risks and spend money to make money, but you need to make those risks reasonable.

So reasonably, a million sales or more should be considered a profit margin. Look at a million sales as a benchmark, what are the profits you would make off of that, and start your budget there. That’s how you do good business. You should never over budget and expect sales that put you in the upper echelon of games sales, especially when it’s a series that was never up in those numbers to begin with.

The same is true for new IP. Dishonored came out last year from Bethesda. It had a very modest budget with almost no expected sales for revenue (I think the profit turn around was just 800k in sales). They moved 2.45 million units, and that’s only counting physical product. It was a success, and this is the same company that tips the scales with games like The Elder Scrolls – something they can do based on previous sales of former games in the series (so, they have the money and a decent expectation for sales).

Dishonored’s next game will likely have a bigger budget because their is now an established base of at least 2 million to sell to, and they have a high profit margin off the first. This is further proof of a few things that seem counter productive to the general train of thought. Those are as follows:

    - You have to have cutting edge graphics for success.

    - You need a big budget to even consider making a AAA game.

    - Again, Graphics, Graphics, Graphics.

For those unaware, Graphics are the #1 cost right now in game development. They are skyrocketing. What you need to do is simply make a great product, and then market it in the correct avenues, and you will see success. Can you eventually make some bleeding edge visual stunner that is also profitable? Sure, but only after the profits already existed to make this a possibility.

Too many companies are just spending big, hoping to cash in. Game prices aren’t rising to compensate, so they need to change their budgets to adjust. They continue to not do so, and this is why the AAA industry is “crashing” as it were. Can it be turned around? Of course, but not until the budget makers get their heads out of their asses. Stop feeling pressured to release big games quickly. Ballooning projects and having 300+ employees. Cut back and return to what really makes games fun. A select few studios get it. The rest? Those are the ones we keep hearing about in the news, and not for good reasons.

    I already did elaborate

    cheaper games

    best hardware for your dollar

must games and best game devs

also pc gaming on other devices like tablets, smart tvs, ipads and Invidia shield

pc gaming on a rise with a jump of 8 percent

    high productions cost affecting consoles.

World economy in a rescission maybe getting worse affecting sony and Microsoft at loss and publishers.

new games more titles on the pc.

Indie game devs making money mind craft anyone.

publishers cut out the middle man and retail making more money.

Console gaming on decline while gaming is booming.

more competition from mobile gaming vs consoles.

pc gaming graphics superior to the ps4

this whole this is just stupid… all the systems have their strengths and weaknesses, and the PC will always be no.1. I have an XBOX 360 to play all the exclusives, and a really high end pc to play everything else. playing BF3 on a 144Hz monitor WITH 144fps @ 1080p is a completely different, out of this world experience… something a console will never be able to do. a console’s power and capabilities will grow less and less over the years and a PC will go all the way up with more powerful parts releasing every year. people who have the money and the passion for computer and PC gaming will always game on a PC. people who are looking for casual entertainment and not tech savvy and want it hassle free will always go with a console. it’s not about elitists or fanboys, it’s about your choice…what you want to compromise in order to get the entertainment you want.

    simple as that.

    PC technology > Console technology

    but

PC gaming FUN = Console gaming FUN

If someone is completely satisfied with a console and is having fun, what PC gamers would gain saying is full of shit?

I’m sure we can both enjoy our chosen platform (and we can have many too).

Of course if we’re talking only about technology then PC is superior but technology alone don’t necessarily make good games.

I was a “PC Elitist” too (prefer only PC gamer though) but I’ve realized that I don’t gain anything, I don’t enjoy gaming more, by bashing consoles.

Don’t forget the PS4 accessories & over priced 70$ games will cost over 1,000$ to have setup in your living room if you plan on having more than 1 controller/1 game like most. The price isn’t impressive at all even IF at 500$. They make their money with accessories that are a NECESSITY to even play your “cheap” console. Yeah its cheap alright, with 5+ years out-dated technology, but NOT for the consumer, but for the company. I can build a 400$ PC with = specs, minus the PS4 RAM a PC won’t need.

    #99 2 years ago
  100. Gekidami

“minus the PS4 RAM a PC won’t need.”
Yep, hence PS4 games being superior; It will run games made to use 8GB of GDDR5 RAM. This is what devs like Blow & Avalanche Studios mean.

    Enjoy your DDR3 games, losers.

And heres a link for you, seeing as you like them so much:
    http://www.gamesthirst.com/2013/02/26/pc-gamers-need-to-just-shut-up-about-ps4/

    #100 2 years ago
  101. Richenbaum

GDDR5 is video-specific ram. DDR3 is general system ram. They’re not the same thing. PC users have had GDDR5 in their video cards for 5 years already, genius.

    #101 2 years ago
  102. Gekidami

And thats the difference, the PS4 uses the much faster GDDR5 RAM as general RAM. Games will be specifically made to use 178 GB/s memory bandwidth. And PC’s use very little of the stuff; Nvidia’s $1000 graphics card GeForce Titan offers “just” 6GB of onboard GDDR5, For instance.

    #104 2 years ago
  105. DSB

@104 In that case that just makes it pretty ironic. The whole article was a torrent of butthurt. You don’t exactly go crying to the internet carrying a handful of links to vgchartz unless someone has struck a nerve somewhere.

Other than that I agree, slamming consoles is just a symptom of general douchebaggery, but writing “LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE” articles won’t make it any less entertaining for those guys.

    #105 2 years ago
  106. Gekidami

^ By that logic, you yourself are clearly butthurt because of that article.

@106 Aha, reverse psychology! I’m not really trying to promote or defend anything, I just think it’s a shame when people use bad data to support their argument.

Really when has there been a time when consoles have outpaced PC in hardware? People are completely missing the point of the platform they are playing on. PS4 is not throwing down against the PC, get over yourselves. They are paying for something they have access to and don’t need to worry about all the crap that comes with a PC and it will always work with any game that comes with the system. No need to worry about drivers, specifications, and OS problems. You just put the game in and there you go. @#102 The very difference between them is why GDDR typically isn’t used as system ram. It isn’t actually made to perform that function doesn’t work as well as system ram, but hey you probably already know that too, right? Right…

and so even pretending that you were right, you’re comparing a changeable graphics card that’s out in the market today to a static hardware setup that won’t be out for another year? Great. By the time the next gen consoles come out, PCs will have already caught up. Another year after that and the consoles will be outdated in comparison. So hey great, you’ll have had the most powerful thing around for those few months. Congratulations to you.

Look, you can like consoles all you want, I sure do, but they’re never ever going to win in a hardware comparison for more than a short burst of time between PC upgrades, no matter what you say or what websites you quote. That’s the simple truth of a static hardware package.

Despite Mobile And Console Competition, PC Gaming Industry Rakes In $20 Billion During 2012

” I think PC gaming can only continue its climb toward dominance. Consider these points:

Sony‘s PlayStation 4 boasts an x86 architecture which will only serve to improve the PC versions of those multiplatform releases. They’ll require less optimization and resources on the developer’s part.
NVIDIA’s recently released GeForce Experience software takes all the guesswork out of complicated PC graphics settings by analyzing your system and optimizing each installed game (provided you’re using an NVIDIA GPU). This lowers the barrier to entry and should only serve to further expand the market.
2013 and 2014 will see a concentrated push toward the living room, and not just from Sony and Microsoft. PC companies like Valve and Xi3 plan to release compact, living-room friendly gaming PCs. Boutique PC manufacturers like Falcon Northwest, Digital Storm, and Origin already offer “Small Form Factor” rigs that boast serious performance without taking up much space.
For “hardcore” gamers, it’s often cheaper to game on a PC thanks to frequently and heavily discounted software on digital distribution platforms like Steam.”

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2013/03/28/despite-mobile-and-console-competition-pc-gaming-industry-rakes-in-20-billion-during-2012/

” I’ve grown to prefer gaming on PC simply because of the portability it affords. I can have SimCity installed on my desktop computer, Surface Pro, or any other compatible Windows device and pick up where I left off thanks to the built-in cloud saving. Being tethered to my living room just isn’t for me.”

I’d love to see a single shred of proof to what you’re saying, like GDDR5 RAM being bad as system RAM… Despite not a single system being made to use it as such up in till the PS4, so really i already know you’re basing that off nothing. You’re just assuming because hey!; If PC arent already doing it, i guess the reason must be because its bad, right?

The funny thing is that blackdreamtard clearly doesnt even read his own links, he’s obviously just typing stuff into search engines and pasting stuff with negative towards consoles sounding titles. Those last two links are perfect evidence of that; Not only did he post the same story twice but from two different sites, but neither are in favour of PC gaming (they mention mobile gaming harming consoles, the thing is, if people are going mobile over consoles, they’re also going mobile over PC). But the ultimate conclusion is:
“Consoles will stay. We are making gamers out of people who were not gamers before.”

“That’s not to say that traditional AAA console and PC titles are dead. Battlefield 4’s shiny new trailer received a lot of oohs and aahs at the show. The era of big budget, loud, and glossy games isn’t ending soon, but those types of games are becoming less relevant as gaming moves forward.”

last time I checked mobile gaming has not affected pc gaming! What did I say about mobile earlier really? what did I link up here earlier mobile gaming isn’t going to affect pc gaming much. last time checked pc gaming is on the rise.

  124. Gekidami

“last time I checked mobile gaming has not affected pc gaming!”
You say that, yet in the very text you just quoted, PC gaming is bundled in with consoles as becoming “less relevant as gaming moves forward”

You really are just embarrassing yourself at this point. Picking and choosing what should be and shouldnt be considered valid from a link. How very dishonest.

“Despite sagging PC hardware sales, the market for PC games continues to show strong growth.”

    #126 2 years ago
  127. Gekidami

Actually, i think you do read the links. You’re just too stupid and biased to understand what they say.

lolPCWorld. Oh wait; “Despite sagging PC hardware sales”. Oh dear oh dear BDT, you’ve been hiding that from us now, havent you. How are PC’s supposed to surpass next-gen consoles if no one is actually upgrading? What a pickle for PC’s.

    #127 2 years ago
  128. blackdreamhunk

    @127

that is a good thing for pc gamers and pc gaming means cheaper hardware. Still this does not effect pc gaming at all it makes it better cheaper parts for pc gamers. It has not affected pc gaming in fact may have increased it. It also means bad news for Amd who is already in the red.

    Think, McFly! Think

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kh9PYtmVybU

you miss the part where says pc gaming increased and wasn’t affected.

    #128 2 years ago
  129. Gekidami

Nope, its means people are using older hardware, older hardware means less need for better looking games. Which based off the standards you’ve been banging on about all through out these retarded comments and links, is a terrible thing. So there you have it folks, PC hardware sales are dropping.

    #129 2 years ago
  130. blackdreamhunk

pc gamers not having to buy older harder means pc gamers saving money. Buying more games. No software or games to push high end hardware is bad news for consoles. who are at the button of the food chain. It means if companies like AMD goes bankrupt there goes your consoles. pc gamers are the people who push the PC’s and hardware companies forward.

    #130 2 years ago
  131. Gekidami

Still means using old hardware, still means worst looking games. Well damn, your whole position seems to be in peril now, huh. I guess now bleeding edge visuals arent that important, suddenly.

Better look to next-gen consoles to push visually impressive games people can actually play, then.

    #131 2 years ago
  132. blackdreamhunk

really last time check pc hardware is runs way better than consoles. The same price you pay for a ps4. You can get a pc that run better for the same price. Lets not for get pc can do a lot more than a console can too.

Last time I checked it was the ps4 that has dated technology.

^ Already proven false. And you’ve already said that PC gamers not upgrading is a good thing. So really what you’re saying is that the majority of PC’s now and in the future arent going be getting the best visuals.

    Well… I agree with you there. ;)

    #133 2 years ago
  134. blackdreamhunk

pc gamer only need to upgrade if they have too. Again cheaper better pc’s and parts. Better parts that does a better job than your consoles or ps4 works for me. Does not stop pc gaming or sales numbers any.

just need to upgrade my pc pass the ps4 for cheaper then boom I am good for another 5 years unless a game dev brings out a game that pushes pc hard ware.

    #134 2 years ago
  135. Gekidami

Yet hardware sales are “sagging”, so they arent upgrading… So they dont need to. You’re right, isnt stop PC gaming or sales. It does stop the majority of PC’s from having the best visuals possible, of the type you keep moaning about. Its amazing how quickly your position suddenly changed.

And again, you arent going to upgrade your PC past a PS4, thats already been proven false. Its amazing how you just blot out that fact.

    #135 2 years ago
  136. blackdreamhunk

how is prove false?? are you nots an over priced hardware ps4 would only kill companies like AMD faster and they are in the red. Old ps4 over priced at $600 vs $600 pc that does a better job and is more powerful plays better games.

    #136 2 years ago
  137. blackdreamhunk

there was no need for pc gamers to up grade why should we when must games are running on out dated 2005 software. the only game worth upgrading for is crysis and guess what the parts are nice and cheap.

And 600 is already more than what the PS4 is going to cost.

Nice of you to admit that only one game pushes the visuals on PC, btw. Keep digging yourself, deeper and deeper, buddy.

    #138 2 years ago
  139. blackdreamhunk

So what’s your point Gddr5 is already used in graphic cards! Just up grade your pc when the ps4 comes out. I am pretty sure gddr5 will be even cheaper then for pc gamers.

As soon the ps4 comes out the ps4 would push the price of gddr5 down even more.

Hardware companies lose money the price falls even faster on their hardware. it only means cheaper pc parts for pc gamers in the long run.

    #139 2 years ago
  140. Gekidami

    /Facepalm.

Again, proof that you either read nothing, or arent capable of understanding it. You truly are dumb.

“it only means cheaper pc parts for pc gamers in the long run.”

That no one will buy… Because hardware sales are down. Ha.

    #140 2 years ago
  141. blackdreamhunk

Dude right now top of the line pc parts are way better than ps4. In june more pc parts are coming, boom price drop as those parts hit the market. ps4 comes out in DEC boom another price drop as people run out to buy the ps4. Better more advance pc techology for cheaper while the ps4 will be at $600 and over priced.

    #141 2 years ago
  142. Richenbaum

When he’s sitting here saying that somehow PC technology will never ever advance past a PS4 he is either blatantly lying in saying that he believes that or living in a magical fantasy land that reason is not a part of. He’s either just trolling or has that Sony brand name so far up his ass that he will never ever listen to anything that might lessen them in his perception. Personally I think he’s just fucking with you at this point. Either way you’re wasting your time on him.

    #142 2 years ago
  143. Gekidami

When did i ever say “never ever advance past a PS4″? Thats sounds like a Richenbaumism, like GDDR5 is bad system RAM. Still waiting on the follow-up to that, btw.

Is being a dishonest liar part of being a PC fanboy? I mean do you like, have to swear on the Tsirk Susej to get in or something?

    #143 2 years ago
  144. blackdreamhunk

    @142

fair enough, any way cheaper hardware means cheaper prices for pc gamers. The last generation consoles pretty much helped pc gamers save more money on hardware. No need to spend as much on hardware when game devs don’t push PC Platform.

^ You didnt answer either of my questions. I’d say thats a pretty big indication of being “full of shit”, y’know; saying stuff then running away when asked for proof.

And yes, consoles saved PC gaming by lowering the price of hardware, thank god for consoles, eh?

    #147 2 years ago
  148. blackdreamhunk

less pc gamers buying hardware will result in a price drop on hardware. The more the hardware companies will be in the red. The hardware companies are in the red the less advanced the cpu and gpu become. Either way pc gamers on the pc gaming platform who don’t buy consoles will have benefit with cheaper parts advanced parts . More money to buy games.

    #148 2 years ago
  149. Gekidami

GDDR5 is bad system RAM = Proof of this being…? Come on now, you’re clearly the super honest genius here. You wouldnt just make that stuff up now, would you?

And whilst we’re at it, PC will never ever advance past a PS4. Quote me mister not full of shit.

Though your bro act with BDT is pretty funny, reading everything he’s posted on this site over the last few days clearly makes him a character any PC gamer would want to rub elbows with. Ask him about the new world order, why dont you.

    #149 2 years ago
  150. blackdreamhunk

I willing to bet AMD will so go bankrupt, again pc gaming already has GDDR5! Sony’s technology is as good as a mid range pc right now. By the time ps4 comes out pc technology will be cheaper and faster.

    #150 2 years ago
  151. Richenbaum

Uh oh. Someone’s getting a little cranky. I think it’s nappy time for little Gekidami!

PC gamers are putting hardware companies in the red. You heard it from blackdreamhunk, people. I bet they get a few people fired and thrown out on the street just for good measure.

Oh you crack me up so.

Nah Richenbaum, i’m just finding your obvious butthurt funny. You’re clearly mad i called you out on something you said and cant back up for the life of you, so you’re trying to divert attention away from your dishonesty. Full of the faeces you be.

    #152 2 years ago
  153. blackdreamhunk

Nope consoles, tablets, and smartphones are putting pc hardware in the red. Well Invdia was smart to make better graphic cards with their Ingria.

Again pc gaming and pc gamers are doing just fine buying cheaper hardware and games.

No real games to puch pc hardware other crysis. Invidia is pretty smart to stop making console hardware and support their bread and butter.

As for AMD I can them going bankrupt pretty soon, last time I checked they are in the red. It’s going to real hard for ps3 to compete with pc gaming with even more dated hardware.

As PC get cheaper because of Pc pasts it going to real hard for Sony to justify selling their consoles above $600 or $500

On top of that let not for get their is talks of another rescission and look at Cyprus in crisis.

    #153 2 years ago
  154. Gekidami

^ Make your mind up, if companies in the red causes hardware prices to drop and PC gamers not buying hardware causes prices to drop then PC gamers are putting companies in the red, you literally said that yourself just now. And now you’re saying mobile and tablets are putting them in the red… Yet you posted several links saying that mobile gaming is taking over console gaming (and by proxy PC gaming, though you’d never admit that).

How can one mans position shift so?

    #154 2 years ago
  155. blackdreamhunk

go take a look at AMD they are in the Red last time I checked. Cheaper and better hardware for pc gamers as more people buy consoles works for me.

Sony is at loss selling those consoles. AMD in the red. Having to up grade less works for me. It will be harder for Sony to justify their over priced console is $600 while pc with more games and is more use full will be cheaper. Even if the pc market button out that would mean cheaper hardware for the PC. Better hardware in the hands of pc gamers.

    #155 2 years ago
  156. Richenbaum

@152 You also need to work on your creativity. You’re never going to graduate troll school if you just keep repeating the same three inept things over and over again. People are going to notice what a sad little sour Sally you are if you don’t put up a better front than this.

^ I really am hurting your feeling, arent i.

So consoles give PC’s cheaper and better hardware, well again, thank god for consoles. Turns out they help PC gaming more than anything. And theres me thinking you didnt like consoles when really PC gaming wouldnt work without them. I agree with you there, BDH.

    #158 2 years ago
  159. blackdreamhunk

    @158

you may think it’s funny but I am sure Sony and hardware companies that suffer will not. It’s called supply and demand.Pc gamers with the cash aren’t hurting and last time I checked is doing fine pc gaming growing by another 8%

Sony and Microsoft will be hurting when another rescission hates too. I hear wall street or the Eu is starting another bobble

    #159 2 years ago
  160. Gekidami

Ha ha, wow. How is that really related to anything? Do you even know what you’re saying any more? I mean, you do know that i’m going to quote you from this later, right? Like PC gamers dont buy hardware and thats good, only one game pushes visuals on PC and theres no need to upgrade, consoles help PC’s get better hardware for cheaper, PC gamers put companies in the red by not buying hardware… I’ve given you so much rope.

    #160 2 years ago
  161. blackdreamhunk

    @160

Richenbaum is right about you Sony Fanboys are really dumb. Sit back. While PC gaming gets better and cheaper. I know I am loving it. Cheaper games and pc parts works for me.

my word always come to pass.

pc gaming will leave the ps4 in the dust by next year JAN and with cheaper parts. you do know that January is the the second wave of hardware to hit pc gaming.

    #161 2 years ago
  162. Gekidami

^ Cheaper thanks to consoles. PC gaming: powered by the might of consoles. As said by Sir blackdreamhunk, PC fanboy extraordinaire.

    #162 2 years ago
  163. blackdreamhunk

No pc gaming powers them consoles in fact all your parts are from a pc! Game devs want a PC instead of another ps3! For all sorts of reasons like cheaper to make.

    #163 2 years ago
  164. Gekidami

“The last generation consoles pretty much helped pc gamers save more money on hardware.”

    #164 2 years ago
  165. blackdreamhunk

Yea Pc gamers saving more money and buying more games is bad thing for consoles because it means more profit for Indie and game devs. Hence games like Minecraft.

More profit for game devs and cheaper games on the pc like steam and soon origin.

it means Sony and Microsoft now have to work harder to justify $70 games.

    #165 2 years ago
  166. Gekidami

Then that money gets used to port the game to console. Hence games like Minecraft 360 lol

    #166 2 years ago
  167. blackdreamhunk

Pc = Free, $20, $40,$60 vs ps4= $70 games! plus cheaper hard ware for pc. PS4$ will be over priced at $600

Added to that rescission and financial woes in Europe and America.

    #167 2 years ago
  168. Gekidami

Why are you still going on about cheaper PC hardware? Again, already debunked. Wow, you really are delusioned and a first class liar. Sony have already said the PS4 wont cost over 600, PCWolrd in their horrible try whilst missing out and failing to achieve parts of the same quality still couldnt get a PC under 600. PC’s arent cheaper, even a reasonable PC fanboy will admit that.

    #168 2 years ago
  169. blackdreamhunk

like said sit back and watch it happen I am going to go enjoy my day watch a movie.

your just harden Sony fanboy that isn’t very bright. Pc gaming will destroy and eat ps4 alive this generation

    #169 2 years ago
  170. Gekidami

Watch what happen? Its already happened, we’ve proven that you cant get a PC at under 600 with parts that arent even below what the PS4 will have. But anyway, keep deluding yourself and ignoring facts like that.

    #171 2 years ago
  172. nollie4545

The technology in a PS4 is not all that potent in PC terms, it is an A10 8 core APU with an on die GPU with about the same poke as a 7850. The only reason they are using system on a chip technology from AMD in the first place is because it is the cheapest method for obtaining the desired performance. To do it any other way you would need Intel and Nvidia on board which is going to cost you a great deal of money- a single high performance GTX card would cost 300-400 bucks alone and that would make the console just too expensive to make and sell.

No PC gamer would be all that excited about an A10 cpu and 7850 gpu, they were never top of the line in terms of performance even when they were first launched and they are far from it now.

That said, for the spend of a 400-500 buck PC, you would struggle to get a system with comparable performance at the present time, whether something with a 6000 series GPU and Phenom type processor would crank out better quality games at a comparable FPS is debatable at the moment, we will have to wait and see back to back screen shots and benchmarks.

The PS3 and 360 were already outdated compared to PC when they came out and still, they sold million of units!

It’s funny reading “PS4 dead on arrival”. A brand new Ford Focus or Honda Civic are not DOA just because Ferrari exist. So why a PS4 would be DOA? A PS4 is still a big leap compared to a PS3 or a 360 and millions of people still play on those.

Hey blackdreamhunk, for someone that is so knowledgeable, you can’t even write nVidia correctly: it’s “nVidia”, not “Invidia” lol!

Also, what’s your fucking problem if the PC is more or less powerful than the PS4? Play with your PC and shut up and I’ll play with my PC and my PS4.

And about AMD… AMD is not doing badly because of consoles or your stupid shit, it’s doing badly because of Intel.

    ——————————————————————————————–

GDDR5 would not be a good choice for system RAM in a PC because of the bigger latency. BUT PC is more than a gaming machine. GDDR5 would not be a good choice for people doing Word or Excel work, etc… But for GAMING, GDDR5 and UMA are a big advantage.

  177. blackdreamhunk

    @175

The unreal video on the pc is running on gtx Invida 680 with an I7 Intel processor judging from the video the ps4 is clearly has lower specs. The gtx 680 will be out dated next year and the next Invida cards at round $100 or so will be more powerful than what the ps4 has to offer.

If you notice in the video the Ps4 isn’t running the same lighting as the pc more proof the ps4 is not as powerful as the Gtx 680 and Intel I7

I am guessing the processor power for the ps4 is just above or around a I5 3570k Intel processor. This is a AMD chip set so I am guess the power of the processor. Invida Gtx graphic cards carry the GDDR5 Ram. It can’t be normal ram because there is is no such thing as a DDR5 there isn’t even DDR4′s out getfor normal ram. By this summer the ps4 would be out dated since Intel will be releasing their new processor soon. Price drop on I5 and I7 and Intel prossors are more powerful than AMD .

Let asume AMD Radeon HD 7990 is more powerful than the Gtx titian. If that is the case expect a price drop on Invidia graphic cards . In about 2 years pc gaming will be well head of the best consoles Sony has to offer. I hear the xbox 720 will be weaker.

ps4 is must likely as powerful as a mid range Pc currently.

  181. ettuShaggy

Look guys, if you can afford the expensive powerhouse PCs that could run games like Battlefield 4, Black Ops 2, Crysis 3, Watch Dogs, etc, that’s good for you. Have fun upgrading that to stay up to date and worrying about compatibility. I’ll pay a much lower one-time fee for my console, know that I’m getting beautiful graphics and great performance every time (not to mention my PS4 exclusives).

If you disagree, show me a link for a computer that can play all of the games as well as my future ps4 will be able to for the price of a console. I sure haven’t been able to find one.

    #181 2 years ago
  182. Jerykk

    @181

~30 FPS doesn’t really qualify as great performance. It’s the minimum framerate that constitutes playability. 60+ FPS offers a significantly smoother and more responsive experience.

Look, nobody is going to criticize you for wanting to save money and go with consoles (though, one could argue that the lower prices of PC games more than makes up for the cost of occasional upgrades). However, because of its constantly evolving nature, PC will always offer the best experience for any multiplatform game (which comprise the majority of games these days) and the gap between the console versions and the PC versions will only grow over time, as every generation has proven thus far. By investing in a console, you are ensuring that you will have a playable version of any game released during its lifetime (except for the occasional lousy port like Skyrim or Bayonetta). But make no mistake, you are getting the inferior experience compared to PC.

    #184 2 years ago
  185. nollie4545

The amount of RAM the console has is irrelevant, at the end of the day graphics and frame rates are a product of CPU and GPU horsepower. The A10 chip and integrated GPU are never going to set the world on fire in this department but they will be a big step forward on the previous generation.

The PS4 has nothing like the punch of a 680 or 3570K.

If unified RAM or system on a chip architecture offered much in the way of benefits, enthusiast PCs would be laden with them, not least because they are cheaper. Only they aren’t great, they are designed to be easy and cheap to produce, use very low power in terms of watts and generate little heat, making them perfect for mobile devices. This stuff has no place in a desktop PC when you want to do serious work or crank out pixels. The A10 APU is not even on the same turf as Sandybridge or an i5.

@208 MS’s loss is Sony’s gain. But yeah its unfortunate, i just hope the rumors about it ain’t true i don’t think Xbox fans will enjoy a gaming console that is not focused on gaming but instead Dance Central, Kinect and killer apps like skype :) Joking aside i wonder what their studios are up to? I know Halo 5, GOW, Forza 5, and Fable are key projects but what else? can’t ride on that alone.

@209 They had time to post one article and theres no shortage of news either, most likely spending easter away from work.
Jesus Sony just don’t stop New IP after New IP but out of the Big three Sony have the most platforms to focus on PS4 PS3 PSP (Support for it still continues) PS Vita so they must have a diverse catalogue of games.

    #212 2 years ago
  213. nollie4545

It could be that MS are keeping their powder dry and haven’t even finalised their hardware or spec yet. Given that hardware becomes cheaper with age that could be a sound policy. So far they have made great noises about Kinect and other stuff, but said virtually nothing about their actual box. It will be interesting to see what they say.

  215. Dragon246

    @LB,
That is probably the reason I prefer Sony consoles- new IPs. Sony probably produces new IPs than the entire industry (big pubs) combined. Glad to see them continuing this great policy.
Fun Fact- Kellee Santiago (of erstwhile Journey team) said Sony fosters more such kinds of games probably because of their music background (SCE shared HQ building and personnel with Sony Music for a long time), in music, talent hunters need sharp eyes to catch the next sensation, so Sony does same thing with indie devs. Interesting :)
