You will not be able to play Unreal Engine 4 games on Wii U

Friday, 29 March 2013 18:44 GMT By Phil Owen

Nintendo thinks the Wii U began the eighth generation of video games hardware; random other people think it’s actually 7th-gen (also known as current-gen for the past seven years). We may be finding out know what the real answer is. First, Frostbite 3 games (including Battlefield 4, Dragon Age 3 and the next Mass Effect) won’t be on Wii U. Next, The Unreal Engine 4 games won’t, either.

At the Epic Games presentation at GDC, Mark Rein was asked straight up if there will be Unreal Engine 4 games on Wii U. He said:

“Hahaha no. I mean, sorry, it’s not really a correct answer. We’re not… we have Unreal Engine 3 for the Wii U. Right? And Unreal Engine 3 is powering all kinds of amazing games, still lots of games are being made with Unreal Engine 3. We announced today about a new Unreal Engine 3 license. Unreal Engine 3 doesn’t disappear because of Unreal Engine 4. But our goal for Unreal Engine 4 console-wise is next-gen consoles. That’s really what our energies are focused on. If you want to make a Wii U game, we have Unreal Engine 3, and it’s powering some of the best games on the Wii U already.”

Well, there is a vote, by somebody that matters, for Wii U being current-gen. Also, this sounds like it could be a big blow to Nintendo down the road as it tries to compete in the AAA core space. That’s a lot of multiplatform titles it will probably miss out on.

Thanks, Kotaku

    I have a Wii U for Nintendo games and indie games. If I want hardcore experiences I will either play on my gaming PC or the PS4 when it eventually launches. People shouldn’t look to the Wii U for bleeding edge because it just isn’t bleeding edge. That doesn’t mean it won’t have a great line-up of games though.

  5. Lengendaryboss

    Well that was “hahaha”. But seriously starting to open diss the Wii U (even if it is a fact), i can imagine Nintendo being offended. But then again this is what happens when you turn up very late to tbe party.

    “Hahaha no”
    Wow, that was kinda humiliating. First no Frostbite 3 and now no UE4!? So only Unity and CE3 remain?

    He also called Wii U last gen which I don’t think is a good PR move but hey, it’s fun:

    If you read the article, it says that pretty much the whole room erupted with laughter at the “Hahaha no.”

    A whole room of developers laughing at the Wii U! That says a lot about Nintendo’s reputation in the gaming world.

    #10 2 years ago
  11. Dragon246

    Yeah, two lines just say it all-
    “Hahaha no. I mean, sorry, it’s not really a correct answer. We’re not… we have Unreal Engine 3 for the Wii U. Right?”

    “But our goal for Unreal Engine 4 console-wise is next-gen consoles.”

    So no Frostbite 3, no UE3, no FOX engine, no Luminous Engine, no Panta Rhei. That says a lot.

    @10,
    Did anyone really care about Ninty platforms anymore? Nothing sells there except 1st party Ninty games. Why would anyone care for them?

  12. Eddie Rodrigues

    This is really goddamn sad. No way they will follow the market without a good marketing strategy or a killer franchise. Heck, I don’t even think Bayonetta 2 will help much.

    #12 2 years ago
  13. Clupula

    @12 – You know, thinking about Sega putting Bayonetta 2 exclusively on a system where it’s not going to sell…it makes more sense when you realize it’s not the first time Sega has done this with their franchises. Remember when the PS2 was the number one system in the world and Sega decided, instead, to make three or four big exclusives for the original X-Box? Shenmue 2, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and Jet Set Radio Future. Sega have a history of making bad decisions like that.

    #13 2 years ago
  14. Clupula

    @11 – Yeah, but nobody on the development side ever openly laughed at them before. This is a new low for Nintendo.

    #14 2 years ago
  15. The_Red

    @12
    Bayonetta 2 won’t help at all. It had decent hype and was released for BOTH Xbox360 and PS3. Even with those advantages, it still bombed (Sadly, GODDAMIT I LOVE THAT GAME).

    The sad part is that another rehashed Mario Kart will probably sell 10 million without breaking a sweat. It’s sad how that crap outsells the actually good Nintendo games like Metroid (Excluding Other M) and Zelda.

    #15 2 years ago
  16. monkeygourmet

    Same shit as every Nintendo console.

    “Hahaha! No!”

    Then Nintendo and a few other studio’s always end up making some of the best games in whatever generation the console lands in on shitty old hardware.

    I don’t understand why people are even suprised… It’s no secret the Wii U is about as powerful as my phone.

    This has absolutly no bearing on the quality of gameplay a device can offer though.

  17. monkeygourmet

    Dave’s article on BF4 was good the other day.

    And after seeing that demo of Unreal4 on PS4, it has only solidified my belief that the first 1 / 2 years of PS4 / 720 will be full of exactly the same shit as we have already been playing.

    Gears / COD / Halo / God of War / Uncharted etc…

    Only a bit better looking and in 1080p. Killzone demo being a prime example.

    #17 2 years ago
  18. The_Red

    @17
    True but Nintendo is also a big fan of “same shit”. Just look at their New Super Mario Bros games. Or how about Mario Party or Mario Kart? Also, they are the most sequel loving of all.
    Parallel to what you said, Nintendo only does Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon.

    (Though to be fair, I absolutely agree that design of Metroid and Zelda games is much better and more fresh than most samey military shooters like BF4).

  19. Dragon246

    @Clupula,
    Yeah, not that cared about Ninty earlier too. Simply put, you don’t criticize something that you dont like if its performing well (like Wii). Now, WiiU is down, and they are laughing, probably thinking “We told you so”.
    No one wants 20 year old rehashes again and again.
    Btw, sorry about your dad.

  23. Lengendaryboss

    @22 If i was a Wii U owner i would be happy with first party games if they weren’t rehashes of established franchises, i would get bored eventually, with the money Nintendo has off Pokemon just make a New IP the teams must be getting bored and having all the creativity sucked out of them. Every console needs third party games for survival and since the Wii didn’t get a GTA i would be pissed if i was owner and if the same thing occurs for Wii U then i am glad i didn’t splash out the cash for it, every console i have owned has GTA and/or MGS: DS/3DS PlayStation consoles/handheld.

    That “hahaha no.” was a huge slap in the face. Makes you feel bad for nintendo. :/

    #24 2 years ago
  25. monkeygourmet

    @23

    I know what your saying, but I think it comes down to weather or not you actually ‘like’ Nintendo and it’s IP’s.

    From a gameplay perspective, the IP’s switch it up a hell of a lot and succesfully too:

    Mario Paper – Mario RPG – Mario 3D – Mario Kart
    Metriod 2d – Metroid Other M – Metroid 3D – Metroid Pinball
    Donkey Kong Returns – Donkey Konga – Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
    Kirby Canvas Course – Kirby Epic Yarn
    Zelda, same game, always mixes it up with gameplay and artstyle
    Super Smash Brothers

    Now, I can’t really think of any other companies managing to mix up so many styles and actually creating GOOD games with nearly everyone.

    Look at how many ‘kart’ games that have come out and all been shit. It is very diffcult to do what Nintendo has done with their IP’s and generally kept up a quality output.

    Just look at things like:

    Little Big Planet – LBP Kart

    And see how easy it is to cross over franchises. At least Nintendo care enough to attempt to make a game that actually plays well if they want to do a cross over.

    Also, look at games like:

    Wave Race, 1080, F Zero, Star Fox.

    When they branch off, they generally create games the play the best in their ‘field’. That is quite an achievement.

    Overall, I think you can hate Nintendo all you want, but their contribution to gameplay and art design without graphical power is pretty much unbeatable for me.

    Imagine if Sony / Naughty Dog had the balls to make the next Uncharted ‘cell shaded’ or with some crazy art style and pull it off?! People would hit the roof or get pissed off for them changing things. Nintendo regularly manages to do this with Zelda, and it’s not easy while keeping brand integrity.

    If you want to talk about re-hashing:

    Uncharted is a new franchise, yet we have seen 3 games on PS3, 1 Vita and a card game on Vita within the space of a few years.

    4 is obvioulsy coming on PS4. Sony and MS milk things way more than Nintendo without the same focus on respecting the heritage IMO.

    #25 2 years ago
  26. zinc

    ^ Hasn’t the whole “Ninty don’t need graphical power” only come about since the Wii, as all their previous consoles were on par, or *better* than the competition?

    A console that saw 2 Mario Galaxies? 2 Zelda’s? (Still not a patch on OoT) & the worst Metroid ever?

    I think their slipping creatively & badly miss-stepped with their hardware.

    #26 2 years ago
  27. Lengendaryboss

    @25 I do like Nintendo IPs, i just wish Nintendo put their teams on something new. I don’t hate Nintendo i just don’t respect their decisions the Wii U current gen not Next Gen PS4/Xbox720, Milking franchises and not making new IPs. Each Uncharted game by Naughty Dog continually set the bar higher until Uncharted 3 which storywise couldn’t beat Uncharted 2, Naughty Dog always do Trilogies: Crash, Jak and Uncharted then after they do something new TLOU. The PS Vita game is the First Portable Entry (If it could be done, it should be) and offered something unique and remindful of Uncharted 1 Adventure (My Opinion). The Uncharted Fight For Fortune is Milking. But Uncharted is a new franchise like you said unlike Nintendo who put their Devs Teams on the same stuff, now i wouldn’t have a problem with this if they work on something new. If you truly think Sony And MS milk more than Nintendo at least their Studios work on something new, which is what i want for Nintendo.

    #27 2 years ago
  28. Gnosis

    @25: I think it’s simply because Mario games don’t have anything aside from the gameplay. They don’t even pretend to have a story. That’s why the devs have to come up with something else to keep ppl playing their games. Maybe that’s the reason why I always get the feeling of playing the same game over and over again. FF series for example managed to get everything out of the JRPG genre and still make every new game completely different from the previous. Unique. Sometimes more, sometimes less successful, but they did it. And that’s what I’d like to see in Nintendo games.

    #28 2 years ago
  29. o0die

    Sony and xbox might milk things 2, but the problem is Wii U is missing gems like the Witcher and what not. That truly sux

  31. Phoenixblight

    @30 Mark or EPic have nothing to fear. SO why would there be any fear? They have had more studios and developers signing on to UE 4 that they have nothing to worry about especially from Nintendo which is on a completely different plane.

    @27

    It’s ‘image’ though isn’t it…

    Nintendo fucked their ‘image’ with the Wii. Everyone still brings up; ‘It’s for casual / grandma’s and soccer moms’ etc…

    And that hasn’t really changed with Wii U. Especially as the name is the same, a big mistake IMO.

    Thing is Wii had games like:

    Xenoblade
    Zack and Wiki
    Madworld
    No More Heroes (before PS3)
    Little King Story (before Vita)
    Endless Ocean
    Sin and Punishment 2
    Trauma Center
    Sonic Colors
    Last Story
    Project Zero 2
    Pandora’s Tower

    Plus the obvious Nintendo exclusives. Sorry to do a list, I fucking hate lists (it always looks douchey), but i’m trying to make the point that there were a great number of really cool and interesting exclusives for the Wii. Titles spanning from survival horror to hardcore JRPG and everything in between.

    People still scoffed at it because of image. Now, I don’t give 2 shits about what people think is ‘cool’ at the expense of missing some great games, but other people still do.

    The Wii U will struggle because of the same reason. Look at Sony and MS’s previous marketing campaigns, it’s always targetting little Billy no mates and trying to make them think they are awesome and part of a super cool brand.

    Nintendo went family, and now, as a result have been ‘tarred and feathered’. Sd thing is, people will miss out on some really solid games…

    Nintendo will always roll out the ‘old familiar’, and even when they don’t quite meet their own crazy high standards; Metroid 3, Super Mario Sunshine; They nearly always go down as stone cold cult classics in the longterm.

    A good example recently is Luigi’s Mansion 2. Another classic in the making… And another example of using an existing IP and resurecting it and concentrating on gameplay.

    I understand you want new IP’s, but you may have to hope that other companies release those on Wii U as Nintendo will always focus on it’s core titles.

    Mind you;

    We have already had or been announced:

    Zombie U
    X (Monolith)
    Fire Emblem cross over
    Lego City Undercover (which is awesome btw)
    Monster Hunter 3
    P-100
    Bayonetta 2

    Thats not great, but not terrible for a consoles first year in a difficult market. I really think Nintendo are holding back alot to combat the PS4 / 720. If not then they deserve the difficult times ahead.

    #32 2 years ago
  33. monkeygourmet

    @26

    This is true,

    I think Nintendo realised there was only room for 2 ‘full price’ power consoles on the market and side stepped the problem by offering a good ‘second console’.

    #33 2 years ago
  34. monkeygourmet

    @28

    For me, those type of games live or die on the quality of their ‘stories’.

    If you strip away the cutscenes and graphics, there is usually very basic gameplay.

    With a good Mario game, you could strip away the graphics and even music, but still understand the amazing controls and gameplay it offers.

    To me, that purity in the gameplay makes me realise the developer was focusing on this rather than worrying about how a cutscene looks in HD Bluray…

    It’s interesting you used FF as an example, especially seeing as they ditched Nintendo for FF7 as the PS1 could offer better movies streaming and storage because of CD.

    That pretty much sums it up for me. A lot of dev’s, Hideo Kojima/David Cage etc… Loved Sony’s machines as they offered the largest disc space and most high quality audio / HD video playback, gameplay is always secondary IMO.

    It would be so interesting to see how many Sony games would have been on Nintendo systems if the N64 had a CD drive rather than cartridge.

    #34 2 years ago
  35. MegaGeek1

    @31 – I should have elaborated. Its not about fear, its about common courtesy and being professional.

    When you read that quote it looks like Mark Rein is thumbing his nose at Nintendo, when I’m sure that was the furthest thing from his mind. What was at the forefront was likely “hahahah, shit no UE4 won’t play on Wii U. Come on now, what a dumb question”, without any disrespect to Nintendo.

    #35 2 years ago
  36. Phoenixblight

    It could be taken as either way. Really doesn’t matter though Nintendo was trying to sell the system as going after core gamers which by not having the ability to run next gen titles they were either lying or just lost the mark. Granted for the next year or so for Next gen we will still be using Unreal 3 and current engines but once developers transition to newer engines Wii U will be following the same cycle as the Wii only with not as much sells and because of this not enough Developers.

    Whether or not Mark meant to scoff at Nintendo or not is irrelevant. THe result is the same.

    Come on dude…

    What about:

    Zombie U
    X (Monolith)
    Fire Emblem cross over
    Lego City Undercover
    Monster Hunter 3
    P-100
    Bayonetta 2

    How are these not, ‘core games’…?

    What does ‘core gaming’ even mean? You say you are in graphics development but can’t see this is about ‘branding’…

    Nintendo just has a shitty name in gaming at the moment.

    If people think ‘elderado’ is going to be found on the PS4 and 720 then they are going to be a bit shocked.

    Of course we will see some great games down the line, but we will also see some great games on Wii U.

    It all comes down to how much you want to invest in gaming. If your only going 1 plaform, then by all means; get a powerhouse. That shouldn’t make you scoff at other consoles though.

    @34: That’s actually the reason why I think that you can’t really compare those games in terms of “recycling”, since they focus on completely different things. You prefer games with changing gameplay. It’s fine. At least as long as you don’t condemn ppl, who’d rather prefer to have completely different story / atmosphere / characters / whatever and only slightly different gameplay. Cause that’s the reason why ppl like these games. Best example is again FF. The many fans of the series went crazy as soon as SE changed too much. Ppl want these games to stay the way they are, because that’s why they like them. Look at ppl, who are complaining that the new Silent Hill games are more action oriented. They don’t want a change. They liked the games the way they were before. And if you like something, you want more of it. Obviously.
    Some games simply don’t need that much change in the gameplay, as long as they keep changing in different ways. Mario doesn’t have anything else to change.

    @LegendaryBoss
    Yes, this is the risk of every IP, that it could be dulled out very fast.
    But you have this risk with every IP. Little Big Planet 3? Uncharted 4? Halo 5? Dont know…Uncharted 3 was already dulled and Halo 4s Campaign with 4,5 hours length felt like “oh..creativity has its limits”. Mario Kart also reached its peak atm, but who knows what will come.

    I was shocked, when I bought the Wii two years ago and realized how awesome the games on the console were/are.
    Games a lot of ppl never heard of it and the last gen power didn’t bother me. Its not only about first party, its about exclusives too. And they were awesome on the Wii.

    Yes, I still wonder why they didnt chose a more powerful CPU/Specs for the console to be more or less on par with next gen. The graphics on Wii U are better than on PS360, but big multiplatform games for PS4/X720 will be needed to shrunk like Call of Duty were on Wii or Need for Speed Hot Pursuit on the Wii….

    @40

    Honestly, nothing wrong with giving people more of what they crave, I agree with you.

    I would argue that a lot of these ‘long standing’ titles have been getting worse though; Final Fantasy being a great example.

    Also FF is a great example of them spinning the world off into other area with limited success:

    Dirge of Cerberous
    Crisis Core
    FF Online

    Not terrible games, but just more good examples of how difficult it can be to take existing games and adapt them into other genres, but, kudos for trying.

    Even FF Versus has been a labour of stress by the looks of its dev cycle.

    You say Mario doesn’t have anything to change but each game tackles ‘platforming’ in a different way.

    Mario 64 – Mario Sunshine – Mario Galaxy… All similar on first inspection, but all containing new and refreshing play styles.

    It’s the same analogy you are using with FF. when you start to play you are instantly ‘at home’ whereas FF’s story and some battle mechanics change alongside Mario’s gameplay.

    This is where we get into the ‘timeless’ argument though… A game like FF has been getting worse, and now it’s on it’s 15th or so game… The gameplay mechanics are showing their age, and even the devs are questioning its relevance in today’s market with games like Fallout 3 / Xenoblade out there.

    Yet Mario is still kicking ass and scoring high with almost every game that comes out. The gameplay is what I would call ‘timeless’.

    They are such different games though, it’s had to draw too many comparisons. FF includes very little focus on ‘control’ whereas Mario is entirely focused on the gameplay being an extension of your physical input. It’s a very tactile type of game… This quote from Eurogamer’s review of Mario Galaxy 2 sums it up for me:

    “Yoshi’s tongue is the highlight of Super Mario Galaxy 2′s control and interface feedback which, as ever with Nintendo games, is so polished, rewarding and punchy that it’s entertaining in itself. Every detail of interaction tickles your pleasure receptors, from the clunk of a switch to the cheer from the remote’s speaker when you pick up every coin in one of its old-school underground coin rooms. The game is an unfettered joy to use.”

    This statement can run through a lot of Nintendo products, and to me is what separates them from Sony & MS.

  44. Gnosis

    @42: No no, I’m not saying that. Just pointing out, that ppl usually don’t like, when something they like for what it is suddenly changes. That’s why franchises like Uncharted, Halo of FF remain mostly the same. And what ppl complained about in FF were either the changed mechanics or the bad stories. Not that they’re getting old.

    “You say Mario doesn’t have anything to change but each game tackles ‘platforming’ in a different way.”

    No, I said Mario has anything to change aside from the gameplay. And you just admitted that. It’s about platforming. Not the story like MGS / FF games, not the atmosphere like Silent Hill, but about the gameplay. What else can they change aside from that?

    I was laughing because the journalist only asked about WiiU. Why didn’t he also ask about Xbox 360 or PS3? UE4 isn’t supporting those systems either because we already have the awesome Unreal Engine 3 for those systems. Developers have been making, and will continue to make, amazing games for those platforms using UE3! UE3 is used to power, by all-time highest Metacritic rating per platform: 2 of the top 6 games on WiiU, 5 of the top 20 games on PS3 and 7 of the top 20 games on Xbox 360! UE3 Is clearly the best engine for these three platforms!

    @45 – Ladies and gentlemen, we have a celebrity guest! I feel like it’s one of those Brady Bunch episodes where David Cassidy shows up.

    Anyway, in all seriousness, Mark, there’s no need to defend yourself, although I can say that one of the reasons why journalists only ask about the Wii U in that case is that there is a bit of a dispute as to whether or not it’s truly a next-gen system. People ask you guys a question like that is one of the ways people gauge whether or not that claim by Nintendo is true.

    @44

    Sorry, I see what you mean, my bad. :D

    There is a meta argument here regarding; story based games / gameplay based games…

    The ‘best’ Sony games are IMO:

    Journey
    FLOW
    Flower
    Project ICO / SOTC
    Tokyo Jungle

    Then we have some cool games like;

    Heavy Rain
    Metal Gear
    Etc..

    Thing is, to me, the more a game is like an interactive movie; the more I generally dislike it. I much prefer my first listed games on this basis. Also, it’s ironic that most of these games are PSN exclusives rather than full, retail games.

    The Playsation was always ‘smoke and mirrors’ to me, right from the PS1 and games like Toshinden & Ridge Racer to the PS3 and the ‘fake’ CGI for Motorstorm and Killzone. Sony have always left a bad taste in my mouth with their focus on movies being like games and pushing media format over gameplay.

    Not always the case obviously and I think my PSN list offers a good contrast.

    It sure isn’t a good Thing, but I don’t know how Important it is. I’m no Super-Duper Patcher Expert, but the only Thing that can Save the WiiU is Nintendo. Why does anyone buy a Nintendo Console? Because of Nintendo Games.

    Its a second Console for the Exclusives, and for that It can be a Great Console. Not now, because the Games are Missing, but it can. Nintendo just has to do it.

    @67 Nintendo isn’t a second console company, it is 3rd or 4th console. Just like the Wii sits unused, alone and collecting dust behind the PS3, X360, and my PC’s, the Wii U will most likely suffer the same fate.

    The Wii U might make it up to 2nd on the list if people only get one of either the PS4 or next box, don’t have even a low spec PC to play indies, and ignore iOS/Android devices altogether.

    If the graphics engine were all, Minicraft would not be successful. if I want to play a game with Unreal Engine 4, use my PC which is now better than the PS4, if I want to play a different game with a totally new gameplay my game WiiU. Simple as that.

    I think nintendo will have games running on this tech on scalable form a 3.5 if you will. Of course developers who cares to bringt it not like epic,they dont like nintendo for obvious reasons, i think small develolers and other open minded developers will bring their 3.5 versions to wiiu, that is way better than the wii situation,which didnt run an unreal engine
