Metal Gear Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid 5 are separate games

Thursday, 28th March 2013 21:54 GMT By Phil Owen

Yesterday at GDC, Hideo Kojima said that Metal Gear Ground Zeroes and faux-mysterious Phantom Pain were actually together Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, and also that Ground Zeroes is the prologue. We interpreted that to mean they are one game, but that is not the case. A Konami spokesperson told GameSpot Ground Zeroes and MGS5 are separate titles. OK.

I clearly don’t see how this will work, I mean, one completes the other.

There was a rumour months ago that Ground Zeroes would be a cheaper downloadable game to bring new players into the mythos of Metal Gear, and wet their palettes for the full course meal of MGS5. If true, that would be a great stop-gap to bring in revenue for this no doubt Mega Budget title.

@1 – Well, yeah. It’s basically the same as if they had announced Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 at the same time.

While if this is true, it would mean I was wrong about them not putting out two games at once, I know I’d still buy both of them.

I know I had read interviews where they talked about how you’d actually use your base as a hub. And the Phantom Pain shows it getting destroyed.

So I’m guessing where Ground Zeroes ends is where MGSV begins. Ground Zeroes fills in the blanks as to what happened after Peace Walker with MSF and then MGSV shows what happened after MSF was destroyed.

It fits. I guess GZ will be more “typical” MGS game and we will have some innovations and weird stuff in PP.

I just wonder if both will be triple A games and how much content will be in each.

But again… Why the hell Ground Zeroes fragments were in MGS5 trailer then? oO

I think Kojima makes a mistake here. Two games look very similar to each other. Fans of the series know what’s Koji is up to but most of the average people don’t know what is this. It’s confusing.

Also, why releasing two games in 360/PS3 when Next gen is soon? I don’t see any logic at all here. At all.

  6. Clupula

I, for one, am glad that these are staying this gen. I wouldn’t have been able to play them for years if they went PS4.

    Very interesting move by Kojima.

It could not be more obvious that there are going to be next-gen-versions, too.

I think we should wait for confirmation from Kojima before accepting this fully.

This makes no sense. Why would they ever do that? Perhaps the person who was asked if there was 2 different games interpreted the question wrong. What is defined as a game? Perhaps both games in one deal? Kinda like the HD collection where there is 3 MGS games in 1? I am okay if its like that, but 2 different games where I need 2 different purchases. That is ridiculous, why would they pull a Ubisoft?

so confusing wtf just stik with one game dumbass kojima

Yes BRAHAMANDUDE because insults will get you everywhere….

  12. ApplePieChart

For the love of all that is good and right, can people PLEASE just wait until its confirmed before they post garbage as facts? WTF, man. 90 articles about the next Microsoft console not running used games, etc. but no one KNOWS. But they speculate. Now this. The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes were one game yesterday. Today, they’re two. Tomorrow, they’ll be four games. I see so little video games “journalism” nowadays and a TON of video game speculation/sensationalism.

Bombarding of MGS titles… It would have been better if it was a Tanker/Plant game structure instead of two damn separate games. Both look amazing but sold as separate things is kind of “what?” This is starting to look like the Assassin’s Creed countless titles releasing… Hopefully this will be as user above says, being one of them a downloadable title for newbies or something. Let MGSV close the circle once and for all though.

Well it makes sense Ground Zeroes is the prologue, seeing how Snake’s arm is missing in the phantom pain. But there’s no way there are two separate games made. ground zeroes is supposed to a large open world game and phanton pain titles mgs5, they both are one. Kinda like the tanker chapter of mgs2 and raidens part following.

Damn now i have to accommodate for two MGS titles, lets hope there is a reasonable priced bundle because as much as i love MGS i am not splashing out for two games that are clearly meant to be together, if they both have long stories then fine, i just wait until one is cheaper.
Edit: I also hope this is not the future of gaming because i don’t like having to pay twice for a complete experience especially at the prices publishers charge, oh yes and multiplayer is going to a mixed basket as well.

    #17 2 years ago
  18. Clupula

If both are open world games, this makes sense. Especially, if both have completely different areas they cover.

    #18 2 years ago
  19. Clupula

Plus, I don’t want to be the guy who says it, but they are making a 360 version, so it wouldn’t surprise me if splitting it into two games is Kojima’s way of keeping up the quality and still having a 360 version.

  20. Bomba Luigi

I like the Idea that this are two Games, and not one. But they just spoiler the Hell out of Ground Zeros, I know not much about GZ yet, but one thing I know is how the Damn game ends. Its not good when one of the First Things you know is the End…

@20 – Well, if you’re a fan of the Metal Gear series, you already know the big details of Big Boss’s life, just not the particulars.

  24. Dragon246–the-phantom-pain-kojima-interview
The separate game thing is not decided yet, although Phantom Pain will be much bigger than GZ, which as said earlier will like a prologue- Straight from the man himself, Kojima.

    #24 2 years ago
  25. Lengendaryboss

@23 Can you be anymore desperate? I will wait until Kojima gives us an explanation for this later in the week, if its crap i will be angry but if its justified i will not be bothered. But i might be worried in general Snake’s classic line “Kept you waiting huh” won’t sound the same.

    #25 2 years ago
  26. YoungZer0

@23: Bring him back? Where did he go?

    #26 2 years ago
  27. Clupula

@23 – I’ll wait until I hear why Hayter isn’t back first. If anything I’d be surprised if he isn’t still going to do the voice for Ground Zeroes, but not Phantom Pain.

    #27 2 years ago
  28. Hellhound30x

@25,27 Where have you guys been? Gametrailers has an interview with Kojima. He said he wanted a new take on MGS. BUT HERE IS THE DEAL BREAKER, THE JAPANESE VERSION OF SNAKE WILL STILL BE THE SAME VOICE ACTOR THAT HAS VOICED SNAKE FOR THE LAST 10 years….
    still not angry?

    #28 2 years ago
  29. Bomba Luigi

Well… I am not Angry, but very Disapointed. Not just because of the Change, but because of the Nature of the Change. Not even talking with Hayter about that and ignoring him, thats a bad attitude.
I really don’t wanna buy that Game right now. And yeah, now People will call me whatever like when I said I don’t buy the next Splinter Cell because of the Ironside dismiss. But thats just who I am.
And MGS 1-4 really works fine as a complete Experience for me.

    #29 2 years ago
  30. Lengendaryboss

@28 I get that David Hayter is an iconic voice for Snake, but if that is true then i see where his loyalty lies.
@29 Well you can do that i can respect those morals. But i am still buying the game regardless why? i am a longtime MGS fan and i am not going to get bitchy and demanding just because David Hayter is not there. I play games to enjoy them and if this game achieves that then thats all i want. Will i miss David Hayter? Yes he was and still will be Snake, but i am prepared to move past it as long as it is justified.

    #30 2 years ago
  31. Dragon246

True, posted that link in #24. Pretty lame reason indeed. This is probably the last MGS featuring Big Boss, would it have been so difficult to retain Hayter for one last game?

    #31 2 years ago
  32. Hellhound30x

@30 it can’t be justified to me, when Japan still has the same voice actor.
Sorry, but traditionally MGS games sell more in the US. look up the numbers… to me this is a total spit in the face to the fans. I’m disappointed to say the least… I signed the petition, and thats all I can do really.

    #32 2 years ago
  33. Clupula

I think you’re overreacting a bit. Kojima isn’t spitting in anyone’s faces, except for maybe David Hayter.

    #33 2 years ago
  34. Lengendaryboss

@32 Sometimes petitions don’t work, but now that the reason for David Hayter being dropped is revealed, i am signing it as well as the voice actor differences. That isn’t justified enough in my opinion.

    #34 2 years ago
  35. Hellhound30x

@#34, I hear what you’re saying about petitions don’t work, but like I said, “it couldn’t hurt any…” At the very least if they can see there is fans out there that want Hayter back…

    #35 2 years ago
  36. Clupula

To me, spitting in the fans’ faces would be to do a complete reboot of the Metal Gear series.

    #36 2 years ago
  37. Clupula

This is disappointing, but it’s not a deal breaker.

@38 Seriously we get that you want David Hayter back (I do as well as i am sure others do), but now its just getting annoying.

    #39 2 years ago
  40. Clupula

@38 – Seriously, dude, you’re getting to the point where you’re harming Hayter’s case more than you’re helping.

Not to mention, didn’t you have this sort of outrage before for DmC, only to suddenly become a defender when you scored a free copy?

    #41 2 years ago
  42. Lengendaryboss

@41 Is that true? wow so to stop this he needs to get MGS V for free and he will stop complaining and start defending :)

    #42 2 years ago
  43. Clupula

@42 – I remember seeing a video he posted about DmC and then, and he can correct me if I’m wrong, I believe a friend let him have it and it totally changed his mind.

    #43 2 years ago
  44. Clupula

I mean, hey, I’m totally cool with changing one’s mind AND with getting free stuff. But you can’t make a giant public display of sound and fury and then when you actually get a free copy of it, become a defender, AND THEN make another giant public display of sound and fury about another game.

    #44 2 years ago
  45. Lengendaryboss

@43 So the power of free overtook outrage amazing :)
