Ascend: The New Gods dev approached by Microsoft to make F2P game that “doesn’t suck”

Ascend: The New Gods developer Signal Studios has stated it was approached by Microsoft to make its Xbox F2P stand out from the pack, by ensuring it didn’t suck.

Destructoid reports that the game’s art director Brandon Gillam – speaking at PAX East – said that Microsoft wanted a free title that “doesn’t suck”, which suggests the company has a dim view of the freemium and truly F2P market today.

The Xbox 360 – and allegedly Xbox 720 – game is currently accepting closed beta registrations now. If you want in you can submit your lot here.

A lot of the stuff in the freemium market is shovelware.

The best on the F2P model is and will stay in the future Team Fortress 2. Yeah there are some ridiculously expensive hats and you can buy slightly better weapons(but always going with a rather big downside), but everything can be obtained for free and actually the better weapons are not ruining the balance. You can be absolutely competitive even with the original weapons. And obtaining stuff is fun, because it is random and there is no graph showing you how much grinding you must do to unlock something.

This is one of my biggest problems with freemium, in order to get something you must put abysmal amount of time and sometimes it even have a timed effect. Some of the bigger games eliminated very good the notion of pay 2 win, but still paying for stuff gives you the best experience faster.

Really, I am very much scared about the future and everybody talking that we must embrace F2P, because it is more profitable, more “enjoyable” and single player will die, because people don’t want to do stuff alone…

It’s not that hard to make a F2P not suck

Besides the Overpriced stuff on the Valve store TF2 is a good F2P game because it wasn’t designed with free to play in mind and they left most of it alone when they converted to free 2 play.

I think a lot of games struggle to balance gameplay without this. Adding it is a further complication. It may be easy enough to to make F2P not suck from a gamers perspective, but it does also need to make money too.

    I hate F2P.

It’s one of those things that can soooooo easily be manipulated into a stinking, money grabbing hell hole.
