Publishers twice as keen on PS4 and Durango than Wii U

Thursday, 21st March 2013 21:57 GMT By Brenna Hillier

According to the Games Connection Publisher Survey 2013, 22% of surveyed publishers plan to release games on the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s new console, but just 11% are interested in releasing games for Wii U.

The Wii U is still doing better than other current generation hardware, though, with only 6% indicating interest in future PS3 and Xbox 360 releases, according to a report on MCV.

As in a recent GDC survey of developers, more publishers (9%) are interested in future Vita releases than 3DS (5%), even though the 3DS has a higher install base. Interest in both PSP and DS is witheringly low at 2%.

Meanwhile, motion controls – the passing generation’s great white hope – are right out. 3% of publishers have plans for Kinect and PlayStation Move. The poor old Wii barely gets a look in with 2%.

As well as changing platform interests, the survey showed that publishers are rethinking how they sell their games. 60% said they almost never release physical boxed copies of games. This figure will seem high if you’re console -centric; on consoles, 62% of publishers utilised boxed releases.

But elsewhere, 25% of publishers said they only use free-to-play, and 40% said they often use it. 55% have gone right off subscription services.

Not a shocker, but it’s good to have actual statistics to back what people know subjectively.

Nintendo’s pretty much dead as a hardware company unless they put out a new console and do a complete image overhaul.

Their tactic last generation worked because video games were just emerging into the mainstream, and the gimmick of a complete different control scheme wowwed people. Unfortunately, the console getting mostly shovelware gave it a bad reputation, and the average person likely got only a few months of use out of it. And situations like Operation Rainfall, where we had to practically beg Nintendo to release games we actually wanted to play, certainly didn’t help.

Nintendo needs capabilities (including graphics) that are roughly comparable to what Sony and Microsoft have, AND they need to deal with the image they’ve put out of themselves as “family-friendly” and “kid-friendly.” Being family-friendly or kid-friendly for a software publisher is fine, it’s part of the makeup of the software industry that different companies focus on different things. It’s not good for a console maker. Would you buy a DVD or Blu-Ray player if it could only play films that were PG-13 or lower? Nintendo doesn’t actually have that restriction, but that’s the image people have of their consoles, even with games like Resident Evil: Revelations and Batman: Arkham City coming out on the Wii U.

Not surprising. If WiiU cant redeem itself this year before next-gen consoles arrive, its pretty much dead.
Its not surprising no one wants that overpriced piece of 7 year old hardware.

Good call on the image part. I mean, why did they have such a stupid feature in the first place?

The removal is good but then it’s like intentionally hurting yourself and then stopping after 3 months.

You mean to tell me when you add up the developers making games for two systems is more than the number of developers working on one system??? Get out of town. No way…. Sometimes I wonder if these article titles are intentionally written to be sensationalism just to get hits…. Why not have a title reading “Developers are 3 times more keen to develop for PC than all consoles combined”…. PC games have far more exclusives than all consoles combined, so why is there no article for it? because it wont get hits like flaming a console fanboy war.

@13 Well considering publishers usually makes games both for the PS4 and Xbox720 (Maybe PC) at the same time, its sort of a no brainer that is combined. The reason why its being compared is because the Wii U is Nintendo lastest console and the Next Gen Consoles is what will kill the Wii U if something isn’t done, Unofficial price cuts for the system ain’t helping it like @12 stated and if nothing is done come this Holiday the Wii U will lose Third Party Support like the Wii, because it is strangely similar to that situation (Wii PS3 Xbox360) and (Wii U PS4 Xbox720) which is the least powerful of that Combo?

Anyway it goes to show the PS Vita is a hardcore platform even the publishers see that. Very shocked to see more publishers put more commitment to a platform which is underselling than a platform which has sold more than PS Vita. It just goes to show that install base and target auidence can make a difference to software sales.

I think this is has always been a nintendo problem, lack of third party support, the problem is that nintendo games are the only ones that sell well on nintendo home consoles, and they do sell more on the other consoles that with nintendo, of course they are a a good number of exceptions, but they are not the rule, this is not surprise, altough i think is better than with the wii.

Again with a 7 year old hardware, find me a ps3 and 360 that has the same ram and cpugpu innards and then we talk about it.
