Jonathan Blow says The Witness will run faster on PS4 than PC

Tuesday, 12 March 2013 16:40 GMT By Phil Owen

In an interview with EDGE, Jonathan Blow talked about performance on PS4 vs. PC on his upcoming game The Witness, and he said “the equivalent game will run faster” on PS4. I’m not really sure what that means, but the context is after the jump.

“For The Witness we’re mostly interested in the base machine and how fast it is – the fact it has faster RAM than a PC.”

Indeed, the PS4 will have 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, while your regular high-end PC only has DDR3 RAM. But the comparison is about more than just RAM speed.

“[RAM] really helps in shuttling graphics resources around, and since it’s not running a heavyweight operating system like Windows that gets in the way of your graphics. Rendering stuff through Windows has an impact on performance. Since a console is just about games, that doesn’t happen, and the equivalent game will run faster. And if you can target to specific hardware you can make it run faster, too.”

This quote, of course, means a lot of folks are going to try out The Witness on both platforms to run comparison tests. Lucky us.

PC Gamer vs. PlayStation 4: How much does a comparable rig cost right now?

    #1 2 years ago
  2. Malmer

@1 Still, on PC you have to copy stuff back and forth between video memory and system memory. On the PS4 it is the same thing so you only need one copy and you can edit it in place (with some locking overhead sure, but not as much as shuffling it over the system bus). So it isn’t only about memory speed.

    “Phenis says:
    02:44am February 21 2013
I’m sorry, but this article is BS.
To get things straight before I go over my reasoning: I’m a PC enthusiast, not a console fanboy. I’ve never owned a console. First off, on RAM:

“Given that the next Xbox will supposedly launch at 8GB, it only seems right that Sony also sticks in a full 8GB of GDDR 5 RAM. Impressive, but it seems like massive overkill to me, so I’ll recommend 8GB of DDR3 RAM.” You failed to note that it’s actually impossible to include high-speed GDDR5 RAM with this system, instead choosing to call it “overkill.” When you’re recommending parts to people, at least tell them the truth about why you chose a specific part, rather than feeding them lies.

My second gripe with the article is found in the “other” section: The rest of the components you can put together from any number of budget parts. So long as the PSU has a PCIe power connector for your graphics card you’re good to go. With that and a cheapo chassis you can have the lot for another $50.”
You’re honestly expecting people to find their own power supply when they don’t even have the know-how to choose a graphics card? None the less, you’re saying that you can fit a high quality power supply and a decent case in a $50 budget, which you can’t. Even more shocking to me where you say “as long as the PSU has a PCIe power connection for your graphics card you’re good to go.” This is just downright wrong. There is much, much more to buying a power supply than the connections it offers. There are too many low quality power supplies out there with that PCIe power connection included, even though they would literally catch on fire if you came close to providing the
power needed for the graphics card and (inefficient) CPU, destroying not only the unit itself, but also every other part in the computer.

And then you go on to say that Optical is dead:
“I’m assuming you have a display, as I’d assume a PS4 buyer would have a TV, and you’ll notice I’m not including a Blu-ray drive here. Not because I’m trying to stick to a price-point, but because optical media’s dead, man. We’ve got digital downloads and operating systems that can be installed from USB sticks, so why would we?”
Sure, maybe it is dead. But guess what? Windows still comes on a disk! How can you expect a first time builder to know that he has to download it and prepare a flash drive to boot off of for the
installation? Are you prepared to have a bunch of poor souls coming back to you crying that they can’t find where to put the disk?

Finally, you don’t even include a legitimate copy of Windows. Add $100 on to your budget, buddy. If you’re going to tell people they can build a comparable PC to a console for a similar price, don’t lie about it. You’re looking at at least $50-$80 for a decent PSU on its own, another $30-$50 for case of acceptable quality, and $100 more for an OEM license of Windows. I’m not including an optical drive
in there for argument’s sake, and you’re still roughly $250 more than your so called “$600 rig.”

Debunked right there in the comments, bud. Just a PC fanboy site lying, as always.

People don’t buy a console for the bleeding edge graphics. Everyone and their mother knows that you can get better components with a PC. But with a console you plug it in and it works, no need to worry about the same stuff that comes with a PC like driver issues, if the game will run, if you have good enough hardware to play the game. These are things that will always stop PC becoming mainstream. Why would an average joe want to learn or bother to learn how to install a gpu, psu,ram when he can pick up a machine for 400, plug it in and it works with every multiplatform game and the exclusives not to mention the services the console brings. Its a one stop media hub.

Otherwise, go fuck yourself, you phony!!!” I get the benefits of owning a gaming PC, and in fact, I do want to get a proper rig, but why belittle someone for owning a console, or even being excited for the PS4? Or for that matter, one media outlet that all they did was just report on something a developer said about a project they’re working on for the PS4? Do you get some type of kick out of doing that? I keep harping on this, but I get universally ignored (and not just here at VG247). A console provides a much more direct path to the hardware than a Windows+DirectX PC. As a result, performance *can* be *much* better (given the same vintage hardware on both platforms). *Can*, but won’t if clunky middleware is used to sit in the place of DirectX for portability. This is part of what time and development money do for console performance on the best titles. The more software-tech investment, the better the resulting look and performance.

    Faster than on a PC??

Amazing! PS4 truly owns PC gaming. That 8GB of GDDR5 has won the battle!

Only geeks will game on PC now!!!!

    #22 2 years ago
  23. nollie4545

The reason the PS4 will have no VRAM is because it has an ON DIE GPU. Therefore it has to share system RAM with the CPU. This is actually detrimental to performance than using dedicated video RAM- remember the video card is the last port of call before the stuff is actually displayed on the monitor, going back to use system RAM would be backward and increase latency, not improve it. This is the whole reason GPUs are now provided with massive amounts of VRAM right on their doorstep- it is a huge store for buffering frames prior to them being displayed. Having to send data to system RAM and back again would be pointless, but it is exactly what happens with on die GPUs.

A lot of games will run faster on console; because their quality parameters are pegged lower. Its petty simple really.

There is no way a PS4 with a pokey little AMD CPU and a GPU stuck on the same piece of silicon is going to come near the potential of a current gen PC with half sensible hardware, DDR5 RAM or not.

If Sony was really looking to take the battle to PCs, they would be putting a dedicated GPU card in the box, not doing it the cheap way. Only they can’t; because a dedicated GPU card would increase the cost of the console so much it would come under even more pressure from PCs.

How I see people and their PC elitism:

PC trolls go play on your gaming rigs, no one is throwing down against the PC. The PC is not even competition compared to consoles. Moving on.

    #24 2 years ago
  25. Malmer

@23 You are so wrong. The shared memory is a performance boost. First, the PS4 ONLY has VRAM. The fast kind. And The PC is hurting because it has to shuffle stuff back and forth and keep multiple copies of data. Both in video ram and in system ram. And if it wants to access the frame buffer (which happens quite often) it has to copy it back over the system bus. Which is slow. On the PS4 it only needs one copy, and it resides in the superfast vram-class memory of the PS4. If it wants to modify the data it simply needs to lock it and edit it in place. No copying needed. Also regular RAM access is also faster due to the memory speed.

And even the potential specs of the new xbox with ddr3 memory and a smaller set of edram for the framebuffer wins big by not having to keep mesh and texture data in any place but one. The shared memory. No copying needed and no slow bus to fight with.

I am a hardcore PC gamer, but I love console gaming too. The ease is just great and some of the first party titles from Sony especially are simply amazing games and have some great gameplay. Uncharted, God Of War 3, etc they all look great and these are at 720p and 30fps and they look great for seven year old hardware. Try running any current game on seven year old PC hardware… It wont happen.

  35. fearmonkey

I am a PC gamer who loves consoles, and I go back and forth on them. Right now im focusing more on pC but that might change when the new consoles come out.

Every new console generation is a boon for PC gaming as it brings those technologies to PC’s. I remember when PC’s sucked at games compared to consoles and thanks to companies like ID and Apogee, console style games came to PC. When the Playstation released, PC’s couldn’t really compare, but that changed thanks to 3DFX. Thanks to consoles, Controllers really took off, as it used to be a pain getting a great controller on PC. Gravis had their gamepads, MS had their sidewinder, but it wasnt till the 360 controller came to PC that I really liked having a controller on PC. Now consoles will have new controllers and motion controls, Direct11 graphics, and more games will use that tech and will eventually come to PC. Very few games really take advantage of Directx11 and soon all games will.

I will say that if anyone wants a next game now and has a geat PC, get sleeping dogs and the HD texture pack. At 1080+ with all graphic options on max, its seriously amazing looking. it takes some serious power to run it at anything above 1080p though.

Bladerunner was a fantastic game, one of the few movie adaptations that wasn’t terrible. Point and click was the perfect style for it, would probably be a FPS if released today!

I’d like to see a modern rpg style game in the bladerunner universe, perhaps cd projekt’s cyberpunk 2077 will be the next best thing.

The idea of a “Fan-Boy” annoys me. I mean, why hate on any other console/setup? I think mostly fanboyism spawns from a lack of funds; if you don’t own other systems, you proudly declare whatever you have as the best and instantly hunt for little snippets of info/comparison screens to prove it. I happen to have a high end PC, but I also have an xbox, ps3, wii, and even Wii-U (yeah, I have a Wii-u, sit on it.) Currently, if a game comes out for PC I’m going to play that version. It’s going to look better, and run at a higher resolution with a higher framrate. This isn’t up for debate! However, this was not always the case. I remember distinctly walking into Best Buy, and seeing the Dreamcast for the first time. With dismay I realized that my PC absolutely could not put out those kinds of graphics. And yet, as technology increases, I can now play a Dreamcast (emulated) in a window in the corner of my TV, at a higher resolution than it ever was before, WHILE I watch a movie, or search on the internet (I’m not actually talented enough to do that, but I could if I wanted to.) Xbox 360? Yeah, same thing. Remember how that King Kong game looked when it first came out? Your PC didn’t look that good. The point is, yes, the PS4 likely will have better graphics than current PCs. Especially specifically made optimized first party PS4 titles. Look at God of War 3, even now. It still looks AMAZING. Not the highest resolution, but some super sharp looking graphics nonetheless. But in a matter of time, not an especially long time either because the jump in graphics quality is ever creeping up on a moot point, the top end PCs will run third party titles comparably, or faster. As for the faster ram nonsense, come on. If you know anything you should know that Ram speed doesn’t affect FPS very much. Look it up.

How the hell is PS4 going to have BETTER graphics than current gen PCs when it has been demonstrated a billion times that the AMD APU it will have (WHICH IS ALREADY AVAILABLE) is a shower of merde compared to the potency of a current gen graphics card?

DDR5 RAM or not, there is NO FUPPING WAY the CPU and GPU core of the console is going to magically out-gun PCs running with quad cores at faster clock rates and with GPUs with double the transistor count and even higher clock rates. No amount of fan boy dream-power can change the fact that the AMD guts they have elected to use are already out-classed by CURRENT PC tech?

If anything I would say that PS4 and the next Xbox will give console gamers games which will finally look similar to what mainstream PCs are doing today, at acceptable frame-rates and with comparable quality settings. But I think we can safely say the owners of things like the Radeon 7970 can sleep soundly at night.

  44. blackdreamhunk

wow look at all the consoles fanboys never has any console been better than pc! DDR 5 means crap too and will be outed by next year!

“Right now PC gamers are playing in 1080p and above with 60FPS. That’s what I play in and no game uses anything like 8GB RAM. The most RAM heavy game I play is DayZ, the Arma 2 mod, coming in at around 2GB RAM. Most likely because it is an unoptimised mod for another game.

Crysis 3 in ultra 1080p, uses around 3GB RAM.

My GPU, a GTX 580 SC, has 1.5GB DDR5 RAM. More than enough to cover any game currently at 1080p. I am on the verge of getting a new GPU and even the medium spec GPU nowadays have 2-3GB DDR5 RAM. I’m looking at a GTX 680 with 4GB DDR5. Now that is a pretty decent PC, but that 4GB DDR5 will only be relevant if I have a multi monitor setup and some obscene resolution right now.

I see a lot of talk of this 8GB DDR5 RAM on the PS4, firstly the GPU and CPU are far more important features for gaming. The 8GB is really only for longetivity, it is not going to be used for years, the games coming out on the PS4 will use 1-2GB of it at most for 1080p games (which as has already been stated, will be the stndard for the PS4).

So this 8GB DDR5 RAM is actually completely irrelevant and will be for a number of years, until games start actually using all that RAM. In the meantime it will just sit there doing nothing in the console. Waiting for the day it becomes relevant. By that time the PC will be running DDR8 or DDR9, or perhaps something even beyond that whole concept.

TL;DR – In short, by the time the 8GB DDR5 becomes actually useful, the standard gaming PC will be another generation ahead in terms of technology. It will likely feature more RAM of a more advanced variety.

The PS4′s GPU seems to be the equivalent of a medium range gaming PC and the CPU is an open question. I know playing Planetside 2 right now, my computer is CPU limited in terms of framerate, as opposed to GPU limited. In large battles my framerate dips to 35-40 FPS, which is borderline unacceptable for me. Now that is down to the large number of people in a battle, sometimes 500-600 people in a single area battling. I have a 3770K (4 cores) @ 4.6Ghz. Will 8 cores @ 1.6Ghz really work? I don’t know.

What I’m pleased about with the new consoles is that they are very similar to PC’s now, the same architecture, means that dodgy PC ports should be a thing of the past. I do however think that the latest console specs, whilst providing a big boost initially at least on the previous generation, will leave the consoles further behind the PC than this current generation ultimately. The last generation of consoles were far closer to a top end PC than this generation will be on release.”

Ha ha, you idiot, from your own link:

“Both RAM types were designed for video memory; however, GDDR is better, as it offers a number of improvements over DDR, and it’s mainly used with high-end video cards: the ones you might not be able to afford.”

DDR5 doesnt exist, GDDR5 does, and its superior. Try reading past the headline next time, dufus.

@47 how I am idiot when I said by next year or when the ps4 comes out it will be out dated because it is true.

a multiplat game better on console than pc????

    will ps4 do 2560×1600? never
    16x anti aliasing? never
    60-120 frames per second? never

no ps4/720 game will EVER look better than the pc version

thats like asking if the ps2 version will look better than the ps4 version

    its impossible

now it may look better on ps4 than on YOUR pc…if you have some old relic that can only run it in 640p or something

People that jerk off to the PC will never understand the difference between making a game on a closed system vs a game that has to support that crappy HP in your Walmart ad up to your $4000 E-Peen machine. My favorite thing is people used to have a 20 inch monitor that had a resolution of 6000×12000000 yet the human eye wouldn’t even be able to detect the difference between the pixels on such a small monitor. If you have a 20″ monitor and your resolution is over 1080p you’re wasting resources and boosting your E-Peen. Same goes for calling PC the master race. There are no games on the market made just for your $4,000 E-Peen. Sure only your PC can run some of the gimmic features they add to make you feel like your rig was worth the money, but in reality the game was made to run on the computer most people own. Which is that crappy PC in your Walmart ad. Therefore consoles have always been better. Sure I’d rather FPS with a mouse but then again I can’t sit on my couch and do that.

  50. blackdreamhunk

the PC is still easily the most capable platform in pure performance, and there are almost certainly people out there with Titan SLI setups that have more power on tap than the PS5 let alone the 4. Its just a question of when that level of power becomes affordable, and thus mainstream for everyone else.

    #50 2 years ago
  51. Gekidami

I’m sure there are true powerhouse PC’s out there, and i’m certain that once their DRM-plagued PC crap allows them to connect to the servers, they get the best visuals around… Right before they get disconnected again. SimCity isnt on consoles, its for the real sheep-i mean PC gamers. Of course Diablo 3 on consoles is crap because they’re adding an offline mode, because only the video games Nazis-i mean master race can handle always online DRM.

  52. TheWulf

Oh Blow, you intellectually dishonest blowhard. A program runs ‘best’ on whatever it’s optimised to run ‘best’ on.

Optimise something to run better on Linux, it’ll run better on Linux.
Optimise something to run better on a Mac, it’ll run better on a Mac.
Optimise something to run better on a PS3, it’ll run better on a PS3.
Optimise something to run better on a 360, it’ll run better on a 360.

Hell… optimise something to run better on a Gameboy Advance, and if you do a sloppy enough job of the PC port by comparison, it’ll run better on the Gameboy Advance.

I mean, sure, he’s being paid by Sony for lip-service, but he could be a little less… painfully obvious. And this is from a PS3 owner.

    #52 2 years ago
  53. nollie4545

Every PC gamer understands that ultimately what makes games run at acceptable frame rates whilst you push all the quality settings up, is the speed of your shader, core and memory clock, all of which reside inside the graphics processing unit or GPU on the graphics card.

The thing is, the CPU and GPU in the PS4 will be mounted on the same piece of silicon. And that piece of silicon is a derivative of the AMD A10 APU, and neither the CPU part of that product, nor the GPU part, are all that impressive. But it will be a massive leap over the graphics processor in the PS3, the GTX 7800.

Trollface? Trying to get Erth to bite? Like Blow, be a little less obvious. :P

At least… I hope you’re trolling. My faith in humanity has hit rock bottom of late and I don’t need you taking my faith in humanity to a dark alley to knee it in the groin until it cries.

And I’m someone who hates the “Master Race” bull, so yeah. I’m a constant middle ground in all this bullshit. Big surprise.

  55. partchimp

@blackdreamhunk, are you erth in disguise or just yet another tedious pc cunt? LOLZ etc

    but seriously,

No-one is denying that by their very nature pcs will always look best/better than any console. WE GET IT, no amount of shitty youtube links will convince anyone otherwise.

Bottom line is, we will all be playing the same games regardless of pc or console. Yes pc will have more fps than the other and yes pc will higher resolution but it will be the same game none the less.

Enjoy the game on whatever platform you choose but for the love of god please stop going on about how many giga-plops your pc has.

    Best wishes x

You still have faith in humanity after reading blackdreamtards posts? Its funny that the whole “Master race” thing was first coined to take the piss out of PC fanboys but like the little idiots they are, they found that Nazi terminology was right up their alley.

Its also funny that PC fanboys not only tend to be retarded and delusioned but are apparently also fucking raving lunatics.

Though i’m only half trolling, maybe even just a quarter. PC fanboys sure do love to get screwed by DRM then come back for more.

    #56 2 years ago
  57. nollie4545

lol @ the fan boy who says you can’t tell the difference between resolutions- even 720p and 1080p, the difference is massive, you don’t need a MSc in computer science to see the difference. And 20 inch monitors- have you been living under a rock for the past 10 years? lol.

The bottom line is this: an average gamer with a PC with say an i5 and a GTX 560ti under the hood will not wake up one day and find he can’t play games at the same quality settings his friend has with his PS4.

I have no clue what you goons are on about with DRM. You think Steam is that problematic? I have nothing to hide. I don’t pirate anything, and into the bargain I can buy your games at least £10 cheaper on release, and with better settings.
