SimCity reviews begin, get all the scores here

Friday, 8th March 2013 10:25 GMT By Dave Cook

SimCity reviews have begun Stateside, and we’re rounding up every score right here.

Now, you might be wondering why we haven’t appraised the game yet. Earlier this week we found out via our local EA rep that the European SimCity servers didn’t go live until this morning – which is when the game launched in Europe – so we’re only now able to play our copies. Stay tuned.

Now then, those scores:

Polygon – 4/10 (originally 9.5/10)
VentureBeat – 90/100
Gamespot – 5/10
Eurogamer Sweden – 10/10
AusGamers – 9.4/10
XGN – 8.8/10
Gamereactor Sweden – 9/10
CheatCodeCentral – 4/10
Gamer.no – 8/10
Hardcore Gamer – 3.5/5
Game Revolution – 3.5/5
GiantBomb – 3/5

Got a score we missed? Throw it in the comment box below and e’ll add it when we can.

Wow, Polygon changing the 9.5 to 4 is really something. Shows you how different the test servers and actual / retail servers are.

@10 see, that is exactly the problem with always-on! EA wants to grab cash big time but don’t invest into it’s own infrastructure to keep gamers happy. You want to play our game? Yeah, when *we* tell you! They really represent the numb nuts of the industry.

I’m not a fan of always online. Heck, if there is always-online mandate for a singleplayer experience, I simply avoid it. I gladly payed $100 for an import copy of Demon’s Souls because it doesn’t force its online upon me but didn’t pay a cent for Diablo 3.

Was going to pre-order this but the always online thing put me off, seriously why can’t I just play it by myself and build big cities.

EA are trying so hard to screw up every game franchise I love, beginning to think it is personal.

Before getting All excited about what some game sites have said about playing around with their test versions. Take a look at the amazon reviews for the absolute travesty this game is, on the American servers — http://www.amazon.com/Electronic-Arts-41018ted-Edition2-SimCity/product-reviews/B007VTVRFA/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

I was just thinking. SimCity 5′s servers will probably get better or less crowded soon but what about 2-3 years later when EA pulls the plug on them… what happens then?

It’s really sad to see how the most positive reviews completely neglect to mention the bugs. The fact that trading is broken should kinda be an issue in a game that has trading as a pretty central mechanic.

It’s no wonder reviewers have such a bad reputation.

A 10/10 just can’t be taken seriously in this case. The game is obviously lacking polish.

all rating above 4/10-2/5 should not be taken serious…

The sad thing is, all the bits that are broken now are the bits I’m not bothered by so as long as the high scoring ones are actually based on City building and not the social side, I’m ok with that. On the face of it, that seems the case. What bothers me are server side saves and the whole servers down = game inop thing. That is why people got so angry about Anno2070, Diablo 3 and so on. Single player games relying on a Multi player infrastructure is bad news and needs to die. Quickly.

I don’t think it’s fair to consider launch problems in the review score. This has nothing to do with the actual game.

If I buy a Ferrari and I have a problem with the starter and the car don’t start, does this mean my Ferrari is a 0/10 car? No!

Polygon score was a 9.5. This mean the game is actually fun and well done! Of course, they should include a warning or something to indicate major problems currently happening with the game and a suggestion to wait before making a purchase, but the problems have nothing to do with the actual game design.

BTW, I don’t work for EA but I’ve worked in networking and I know that even the best simulations and tests can’t always predict what will happen when the network and servers will be used for real. And nothing’s perfect, shit happens!

  23. DSB

@23 If thousands of people are buying Ferraris they can’t drive, and you’re recommending it, then I don’t think you’re doing a very good job.

If EA can’t handle getting slammed for that, then they should’ve done a better job, or gone for a different model. It’s on them, it’s not on the reviewers.

Of course it’s a shame for everyone involved, but I have no idea how you can attach a score around 9 to a game like that. Even if there were no networking problems, that still doesn’t explain why some of the mechanics are broken.

If you release it in that state, there rightly should be consequences. It’s not like EA are willing to refund the people who bought a broken game, so why on earth would anyone want to cut EA any slack?

@24 Ok, English is not my 1st language so what I wrote is generally an approximation of what I really think.

What I meant is the score should be about the actual game design. How’s the gameplay, gfx, sound, UI, etc…

Sure EA are responsible for the problems but it’s not like people lost their money. They’ll be able to play eventually (I’m saying days, not weeks). So sure this is frustrating but I think some people are exaggerating with their rants.

And about the Ferraris, when those starters will get replaced, I think thousands of people will have big smile on their face saying it’s an awesome car and they don’t regret buying it!

  25. DSB

@25 You don’t buy a product so you can “use it eventually”. That’s not how a deal works. Either it works or it doesn’t.

If it doesn’t, then obviously EA have failed to deliver.

You can choose to ignore a lot of things about a lot of games, and I’m sure it would make for a more positive review if you chose to ignore the flaws of any game, but that’s simply not how the world works.

You release a broken game, and people are going to call you on it. Why on earth would they feel sorry for you? They paid for it, and EA aren’t even willing to provide a refund. They can go straight to hell.

“They paid for it, and EA aren’t even willing to provide a refund. ”

Neither would Steam or any other digital service. That’s not how it works. Amazon only gives a refund on the physical version.

  27. heroes159

@ 27. Agreed. No one giving refunds for the Digital game downloads. So why everyone bashing only EA.

These server problem will get fixed within a week. Online DRM sucks at launch. Anyway, need to say that Ubisoft Assassins creed 2 Online DRM failed in front of Piracy.Game got cracked. But Diablo 3 succeeded at stopping Pirates. IF simcity can do the same, all i can say is waiting a week for server fixes is not a problem for me if it can stop Piracy. Patience is the always key to success & Happiness as i believe.

    #27 1 year ago
  28. DSB

@27 That doesn’t make it any less of a failure to comply.

Steam most recenty offered refunds for the War Z, but they’re also not in compliance in general. Blizzard should’ve offered refunds for Diablo 3 as well.

It doesn’t really matter who’s doing it. If you release a broken game, you should at least do the right thing and allow people the refund that they are already entitled to by law, within the EU.

  29. manamana

I don’t get why there is even a reason to discuss this. EA sells a game that doesn’t work. I already have enough of the day 1 bug fixes, I’m forced to download mostly everytime I buy a new game. Now people are going to defend a publisher selling games, that undenieably don’t work at all?

In what kind of world do we live in? All rights to the publishers? Shut up and take my money?

They fucked up big time and the *only* plausible reaction from a reviewing website and or magazine is what Polygon did. At minimum. But then look at all the masses who don’t read such sites and mags. They are totally screwed. Yeah patience my ass.

The Sims 3 still doesn’t work right. Try installing all the expansions, it just DOESN’T WORK. It hasn’t worked since the Pets expansion and that came out forever ago.

Sim City will never be fixed, it was a cash grab on a world-famous franchise that they bought up.

CheatCodeCentral – 4/5 not 4/10. That makes a huge difference. I was wondering why they alone would rate it so badly but they didn’t.
