CD Projekt: PC may not always be lead platform

Friday, 8th March 2013 02:36 GMT By Brenna Hillier

The Witcher 3 developer CD Projekt RED is well known for its commitment to the PC, but in a new interview, managing director Adam Badowski suggested the team puts power ahead of platform allegiance.

“PC was the lead platform for Witcher 2 because it was the most powerful, but that might change in the future, Badowski said while speaking with GamesIndustry.

“We know a lot about the next gen platforms that we can’t comment on yet, but our strategy is that we’re always trying to maximise the quality for the platform, to use its particular strengths and advantages. Usually the weakest platform dictates the quality for all platforms, but high-quality visuals are our trademark so we need to approach each platform as individually as possible.”

Badowski said large scale technical design decisions – like whether then engine uses DirectX 11 and 64-bit architecture – are made globally, but the developer wants each platform to be treated differently.

“PC allows for more at the moment, but new platforms are stepping up. In the future, it should be much easier to unify the requirements. Some things, like control schemes, will still need to be tailored to the platforms but the new platforms will unify requirements,” he added.

CD Projekt RED is currently working on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk, both of which are expected on PC and next-gen consoles.

How? We all know the PC is already more powerful than next-gen…

‘PC’ will always be the leading platform , consoles do cost less but are less powerful , after some years PC hardware will again undergo much more advancements and would never remain same , but ps4 hardware wont change so soon , at least for some years , by that time , PC hardware will be ,much ahead , im not against consoles , its just that PC platform has become neglected !

It’s true that other systems will step up but so will the PC as it’s not standing still. However, it seems to me that for some studios at some point the consoles become “good enough” that they become the lead platform to them for reasons other than them being the most powerful graphically speaking. Like the studios viewing it as “good enough” and wanting to work on a single unified spec.

I guess I could kind of see this happening with CD Projekt although as a personal computer gamer myself I would find that disappointing like when id started focusing more on consoles after historically speaking being viewed as the epitome of PC gaming especially in the Wolf3D and Doom days.

It’s true what they say though that “PC was the lead platform for Witcher 2 because it was the most powerful, but that might change in the future” but that future doesn’t necessarily mean PS4 or Xbox720. It may mean PS5 or Xbox1024. But a lot of things MIGHT happen in the future it doesn’t automatically follow that they WILL happen.

Just bring good games on each platform. No one should bash them for trivial things like this.
I, for one don’t care if they make it even as Atari 2600 as a lead platform.

Hmm, the only way that a console would be more powerful than a PC (and that’s only at launch) would be if it offered new never before seen tech.

Also do you know why they call all console next-gen? Because console users are stupid. It’s a marketing thing. Show a bone on TV and the dog will want it. It’s the same thing with console users.

@2 Because the architecture of the PS3 worked best with linear games, where it didn’t have to load as much. The PS3 struggles with open world games unlike the Xbox. However, when PS4 comes out, open world shouldn’t be a problem.

OK people PC will always be better. Consoles are for for people who don’t know how to build a gaming rig, so they just buy the dumb version of the PC, no keyboard and mouse, just a stupid piece of plastic with coloured signs/words.
The gaming community is better on the PC, and you can pirate games, for free! How cool is that? PC&SKiDROW FTW!

Hm… I also don’t understand how he could possibly mean that. Maybe he is talking about PS5/Xbox…1440? Although it would be very odd for him to know anything about those platforms already…
