Rare hiring for “jaw-dropping” Kinect game, cloud experience “desirable”

Rare has posted a batch of job adverts calling for Kinect experience and for applicants proficient in cloud technology, pouring more fuel on the Xbox 720 rumour fire.

OXM has collated all of the job postings in once place, and they do indeed for more intriguing reading.

First is an advert calling for a senior programmer to become, “part of a pioneering team dedicated to the next jaw-dropping, never-been-done-before Rare project.” The same post also states that, “experience of motion gaming, especially Kinect technology” is desirable.

Next up is a posting for a technical engineer that calls experience with cloud-bases technologies “desirable”.

Finally, Rare is hiring for an experienced physics programmer. The job posting states that Rare is, “Continuing to push the boundaries of entertainment technology with our exciting new project”, with a focus to delivering, “world class AAA products.”

So, what do you think people? Is this just Kinect Sports 3, or something much grander? Let us know below.

Before anyone does it – don’t hate on Rare for what they do. Hate on Microsoft for giving them the role of developing Kinect games. They can’t exactly just say no and walk away from it.

That said, Rare had (maybe still has?) a lot of potential to go down as one of the best studios. Then Microsoft acquired them…… *sad face*

Their Kinect output has been some of the better stuff – but that doesn’t say all that much. Some fun mini/party games in Kinect Sports 1&2 but it suffers a bit too much from being essentially gesture/timing recognition rather than more accurate motion sensing. Maybe with Kinect 2 this will improve? Depends on whether the approach for KS1&2 was a design decision or a Kinect 1 limitation.

Worst thing that ever happened to Rare was being acquired by Microsoft.

If this turns out to be Kinect Sports 3 or some kind of gimmicky crap after the words “jaw-dropping, never-been-done-before Rare project” I will be very sad.

How much hope can i have that this is a ‘Better with Kinect’ title? So that i can still use my controller?

Either way, i’ve been doing a lot of digging and found some very interesting things on NeoGAF. There one poster one quite some revealing details on Rare and their happenings. Turns out they have hired a boatload of Codemasters and Evolution Studios people and this seems to be for a racing game. They seem to be working on multiple projects.

This is what i meant:

Really, hate on Microsoft? Some you gamers are just silly.

Microsoft owns Rare, Microsoft decides what Rare should develop, if Kinect games aren’t making money, they will have Rare develop something else.

There are lot of studios that develop non Kinect games that went out of business in the last year. If you work at Rear you should be happy you have a job and the company is even hiring new employees, If you don’t like developing Kinect games go find another job.

I don’t own a Kinect, I don’t like Kinect games, that doesn’t mean I should be hateing on people that do.

It’s a f*king business, you guys should grow up.

The only jaw-dropping game on kinect would be interactive porn.

Lol :D

But on a serious note, as bad as we want MS to get rid of this Kinect shit, they can’t and they won’t. MS generated a lot of money for that crap and it’s the best tool to lure the retards (casual market) in.

So I guess you have to give respect when it’s due.

I don’t know a whole lot about Cloud, so what can i expect with this? What exactly does it mean?

I also wonder if this game is aimed for the core gamer as well, cause if not, i do wonder, next to PGR5 what else they have in store for launch for the core gamer.

I just feel bad for Rare. They’re like a close childhood friend who was seduced by a high paying job, but is now a coked-out husk of their former selves.

If MS keep pushing Kinect I’ll give them whatever respect is due, then promptly ditch them for another platform holder.

It’s as simple as that.

I feel bad for Rare too. With Microsoft their talent is wasted.

They should go back to Nintendo where they actually made awesome games.

Banjo Kazooie for N64 is still the best game they ever made and ultimately made them famous. Those were the days.

Posted by someone on NeoGAF and he’s right:

Nothing in the article suggests it’s a only with Kinect title outside of the wanting someone with Kinect experience.

That could mean a whole host of things. Let’s wait to see what’s on offer before passing judgement and damning the game because the word Kinect was mentioned.

Let’s not judge too quickly and lets just await and see.

I’m 80% on Xbox, 15% on PS3 and 5% on Wii(/Gamecube).

If Microsoft is riding the Kinect horse, they’ll have a hard time to make me buy their next console. I have lost interest in Halo, Fable, Gears and Forza. Alan Wake could be great but that’s about it. And I give a shit on timed exclusives or DLCs.

But then, if they sell shitloads of next-gen Kinects, I’m probably not their target audience anymore.

I’ve had a Kinect for over 2 years. That’s enough time to know that my future and Kinects future have no place together.

It does not work for gaming and never will.

Check out that NeoGAF thread man, only read TheOddOne’s posts, he’s almost like some PI guy or something. Microsoft Victoria studios is working on a new core IP. Black Tusk Studios is hard at work on making the Halo ‘killer’.FPS with platforming and horror elements on the scale of Halo and Gears. PGR5 seems to be in the making. Lionhead has an upcoming new IP, is an MMO and so on. I think when it comes to core games, they definitely will bring new stuff to the table. I just think we’ll see that either late April during the unveiling or at E3.

Cloud has a couple of possibilities.

Less likely is Cloud gaming as in OnLive/GaiKai etc. I.e. the game is running on a remote server and you just get the output/input.

More likely is essentially server based information – this can be about progress/save games located on a server, or maybe something more involved like extensive data located on a server – e.g. a persistent world your game has an impact on or interacts with.

I miss Rares Nintendo days.

Anyways the project can be called anything they want it to be, “Jaw Dropping” or whatever, but in the end it is still just another Kinect game.

The cloud they are talking about, if I had to venture a guess, I would say your profile/account is likly going to be persistant in the cloud. Hence the always on crap. So you can get at the info across several devices/platforms that no one really cares about. Like their Windows Phone and Windows Tablet.

That’s exactly what I thought, nothing in the job advert says that it’s a Kinect only game. But if so, I’m sure it will be good (like Kinect Sports) and I’m sure they have not just one project. Can’t wait to see these projects, I miss Rare so much ! MS knows that they have golden IPs (and team) in their hands, it’s a matter of time. If their next game is Kinect only, I just hope it’s not Kinect Sports 3, 3 games of the same IP in a row, that’s not very exciting.

Microsoft is doing what they do best and that is generate revenue. Kinect is the only console add-on doing numbers. there may be only a few games that are worth playing right now but innovation takes time. Anybody who actually works in the industry know that. The 360 introduced the Kinect and I bet the “nextbox” will revolutionize the kinect. so everyone just hold your horses and let Microsoft reveal what is next because what Sony has shown off thus far is not impressive. The only thing Sony had going for it are its exclusive game catalog. The Move has flopped the Vita has flopped and their network is horrible. The brst thing about what Sony does is reward its subscribers with free games and etc but I believe Microsoft has recognized that and will restructure what Live offers in the future.

From what i understand is that Rare is not working on the Kinect Sports franchise anymore. Kinect Sports has been handed over to Big Park. After reading a big thread on NeoGAF, it is to my understanding that Rare together with Turn 10, Lucid and Playground games is working on PGR5. Also interesting is how many people from Codemasters and Evolution have been hired by Rare.

“Rare hiring for “jaw-dropping” Kinect game”

By the sounds of that they’ve already hired Peter Molyneux…

“Milo is stuff that science fiction writers haven’t even dreamt of yet”.

Still cracks me up.
