Vita sales quadruple following Japanese price cut

Vita hardware sales have somewhat unsurprisingly surged in the wake of a price reduction in Japan.

According to a Japanese report from a One Piece: Pirate Warriors event, as translated by Gematsu, the news comes directly from SCE Japan president Hiroshi Kawano.

The executive said sales have increased about four times in the two weeks since Sony cut the price of both 3G and WiFi models to ¥19,980 on February 28.

The Vita’s weekly sales had stabilised at around 11,000 units two weeks ago, so expect more than 40,000 unit sales when Media Create releases its retail charts later in the week.

No price cut has been announced for western territories, despite the portable console’s under-performance.

Thanks, Destructoid.

40000… Wow man…

What’s Sony is going to sell next after Tokyo buiding and US building and other stuff?

It needs to be $169.99 to sell here

@Erthazus
At next, they will sell more home-consoles. For example PS4.
You now, not like Ninetndo, which isn’t selling any WiiU’s, because it’s a FLOP!

@Belazur
And what’s the Vita if the Wii U is a flop? We all know the Wii U is going to end up selling well. Nintendo just needs to release their games. The Vita should be compared against the other portable dominating Japan right now. Not the Wii U.

@Belazur Fanboy much?

It’s only been out like 4 months. The PS Vita was a flop too when it arrived. The Wii-U will get better with time. This time next year the Wii-U will be dominating.

@3, Okay… Except that Nintendo’s 3DS sells. You know?

The difference -> Nintendo is selling the WiiU at a loss.
SONY/VITA not so much. Not even after the pricecut in japan.

3DS sells? Yep, in japan only. After moneyhattin.
That’s it.

wiiU is slowly on it’s way down the food chain, i don’t see it dominating anywhere. it’s not seeing too much support form as many devs as a next gen console should and as the original Wii had, remember the craze that Wii that brought with it’s motion gaming? it literally created a bubble. Devs might also be a bit cautious not to repeat the same mistake with WiiU as they did with Wii , in the longer cycle only nintendo actually made goood money with Wii, 3rdparty titles didn’t had much to write home about

“This time next year the Wii-U will be dominating.”

This time next year!?

Surely, this time next year, the Wii U will be struggling to fight for scraps of market share against similarly priced, but much more powerful, consoles that have about 10 times as much third party support…

That’s if it’s even around this time next year…

Judging the WiiU dead is just too early, like you can’t judge the Vita Dead yet. And the Vita struggles with bad Sales for a way longer Time now.

Yeah, the WiiU can be Dead in a Year. And the Vita can be Dead in a Year. But everybody who thinks he knows for sure the Future is a maybe a bit crazy.

I Hope they will both doing good. I Hope, but I don’t know. And when we learned something from all the Last Console Generations, than that the Hardware Power dosn’t matter that much. Wii wasn’t the strongest Console, PS2 wasn’t the strongest Console, and the same goes for PS1. Thats really not the Point.

Even if the price cut helps in Japan, Vita is gonna need some serious killer apps ALONG with the price cut in west to have the slightest chance of not becoming a full fledged flop.

I think with them talking about the VIta and PS4 working so well together. I think that will be needed boost for the Vita. I would seriously consider getting a Vita and PS4 bundle assuming the price is reasonable 500ish.

@14 So for the PS Vita to succeed it needs to be an true accessory for PS4, there are better ways for PS Vita to succeed and being an accessory is not it. Anyway i am glad sales have increased, more japanese developers onboard means more games likely to get localized.

If its 40k, its really bad. But its most probably misinterpreted imo as its contradictory to previous reports that the entire 30k stocks of ice silver vita is sold out.
Also its doubtful because senran kagura, which released this week sold 120k in 2 days.
Waiting for Enterbrain sales in 1-2 days.

While that would be nice (I was kinda disappointed that Sony didn’t fully use PSP and PS3 together outside few gimmicky exceptions) this probably won’t help Vita’s sales. No matter how well it works with PS4, it is a standalone system with or without bundles and as such, it needs some UBER HYPED and actually decent games to go along with any future price cuts.

In my opinion, Sony made a horrible mistake with Assassin’s Creed Liberation. That game should NOT have come out near AC3. Instead, they should have delayed it until early to mid 2013 to coincide with a real price drop.

@Red,
Vita is loaded with games for next 2 months in Japan. It was the best time possible for price cut.
And I don’t think AC Liberation was a mistake. The game has shipped more than 600k in retail only, and vita digital sales are very good. Ubi is happy with its sales.

@17 Replace “Sony” with Ubisoft considering Sony has nothing to do with release date of Assassin’s Creed 3 Liberation.

@Dragon
Yes, it may be fine in Japan but then again, they love their handhelds. As for AC L, I’m not saying it hurt Sony or Vita. Just that a little delay and some more planning could have made it a whole lot more profitable for both.

@19
I understand that but they could have at least tried to convince Ubi about a possible delay. We all saw how well the discounted Vita bundle with AC L sold. Imagine if it had a little more hype, a less crowded release season and a permanent price drop. Maybe I’m wrong but honestly, Vita is pretty much dead outside Japan and could use any boost during Q1 2013.
