PC development ‘quite reasonable’, says DmC producer

Asked whether the smaller audience for PC gaming means producing ports is an expensive chore, Capcom’s Alex Jones staunchly defended the viability of the platform.

“If you do your job right on the console side you can generally develop a PC version quite reasonably from both a budget and production logistics standpoint,” Jones told TruePCGaming.

Jones served as Capcom USA’s senior producer on DmC, and said the project had the advantage of using a “top notch PC development house”, which made things “infinitely easier”.

“Honestly the whole process was actually fairly devoid of drama or notable failures. We staggered the development such that we avoided long-running dependencies between the console and the PC team,” he said.

“Much of the credit goes to both Ninja Theory, the primary developer and the creators of the game, and our PC development partners at Q-loc. Both groups did a great job. At the publishing level we decided very early in the console development that we were going to do a PC version and that allowed us to the proper planning and staging of the development to ensure as smooth a dev cycle as possible.”

Jones said a proper PC version of DmC was essential as the most core fans demanded a 60 FPS version, which could only be delivered on PC.

“The second most important thing was making sure we got it out as close to the console version as possible so our PC players would not feel like an afterthought,” he added.

DmC released on consoles in mid-January and hit Steam about two weeks later.

    I would be surprised if a PC magazine somehow stated the “smaller market” as a fact, but the original interviewer actually did manage to cover his ass.

    If anything, it’s a more volatile market.

    I think EA were making something like 26 million dollars on every PC release as recently as 2010 compared to 25 and 24 on each of the consoles.

    They’ve changed their way of reporting since then, but I would be surprised if the consoles have somehow rallied since.

    Unless your game and the port are a complete turd it is pretty much guaranteed that the revenue coming in from the PC version will exceed the porting costs. Even Alan Wake made its porting costs back within 24 hours, which under the circumstances (it’s not the most well known or succesful franchise in the world/the PC release came 2 years late/lots of effort was put into making it a good port so that probably costed them some money) is a really impressive result.

    Yeah pc version is day and night difference between console versions of DmC no doubt. In a perfect world Platinum Games would hire Q-loc to port their games too.

    Creating PC ports is relatively cheap, especially when compared to console ports. Even a top-notch port usually costs less than $300k. Coupled with the higher profit margins and infinite shelf life offered by digital distribution and making a profit from PC ports is pretty easy. That’s why we’re seeing both an increase in port frequency and port quality these days. It just doesn’t make sense to ignore the PC market anymore. I can only hope more Japanese developers and publishers (Namco, Konami and Atlus specifically) recognize this fact, as they’re the only ones that haven’t really embraced PC gaming yet.

    DMC sales are very low. PC sales are total fail. Capcom can continue to make excuses about 60fps and quite reasonable PC development but every PC ports are total fail. And DMC on PC it is just stupid.

    Well I’ve been playing DmC on PC this weekend and really enjoying it. The port is very competent. I know the DF comparison only showed a few cosmetic changes, but with the high frame rate, its buttery smooth. Producing for the PC market is always going to net you more money per game sold simply because you don’t have to account for licensing fee’s for the platform so it really is a no brainer that the investment is worth it.

    @6: Yeah, it’s not like he contributes anything to the community. Just annoying. Don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t get rid of him.

    Who would’ve thought that DmC is not only receiving a PC Port, but that the PC ‘Port’ is actually the best version? Hats off for Q-loc, they did a fantastic job.

    @9 I think he does but if I had to guess, I’d say banning is a last resort because to be fair, you have to accept an amount of passion in our chosen hobby and some people can’t constructively channel that (not that you can stop them because unless you ban an IP, they’ll just get another email address). I’m just not sure why there isn’t an ignore button or at least an up/down voting system.
