Crytek CEO: “the notion of a single-player experience has to go away”

Friday, 1 March 2013 08:19 GMT By Dave Cook

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has stressed that the idea of closed, single-player only games must be culled moving forward. That’s not to say he doesn’t want single-player games to vanish, they simply must evolve. See what he means by that below the cut.

It’s no secret that Crytek views the free-to-play, multiplayer market as valuable. In fact Yerli recently stated that he expects Crytek to go full free-to-play within five years.

Now, in an interview with IGN, Yeri said, “I think the notion of a single-player experience has to go away. However, I’m not saying that there will be no single-player experiences… It could be it’s called Connected Single-Player or Online Single-Player instead.”

Immediately I’m thinking of Guild Was 2 and Bungie’s Destiny. single-player games set in MMO worlds that allow for interaction with multiple players, should a person wish to engage them.

Yerli continued, “Online and social can reignite single-player in a new type of context and provide benefits that will make you want to be a part of a connected story-mode rather than a disconnected story-mode.

“Sure, if the technology forces you to play a traditional single-player game online, that doesn’t make sense but if it’s offering actual benefits to be online then you want to be part of it.”

Yerli also said that The Walking Dead would be more profitable on Crytek’s Gface free-to-play network than any other format. What do you make of that?

I think what he means is that single player games with no human interaction are going away. Like a game of Trials HD where you see other players’ ghosts, or Need for Speed where you see Autolog scores constantly, and have the option of diving into challenges to beat them whenever you wish.

Still, he could have said it much better eh? :P

Cevat Yerli is the most annoying person in the business with these pointless statements.

The only Online single player experience I liked was Demon’s/Dark Souls, without the invades. I don’t like MP, I don’t want MP. And I don’t want other gamers invading my SP either.
They can leave messages, or sport leaderboards (like in NFS:MW), but that is as far as is acceptable.

I get what he’s saying, but its not something I want in a single player. I was a huge multiplayer, but now I’m not. I like something like borderlands which fits what he says, because if I want coop its my choice and if I don’t, I’m on my own with no impact.
But at the same time, I couldn’t think of anything worse than having what I’m doing rated and compared to someone else, or even seeing someone else’s interactions with my world if I’m in it for myself. I like solitary confinement when I’m in a single player world.

@6 they did that so well, it really was a revelation in its own right.

@7 agreed. Things like constant ‘BEAT YOUR RIVALS SCORE’ tickers and all of that just annoys me. It’s horribly intrusive when I just want to relax on my own. Even Far Cry 3 – which is a game about isolation on some levels – has score tickers for challenges.

What is so wrong about playing a game alone? All by myself, with headphones on? No one to distract me, neither in real life nor on-line? It’s okay if everything is connected and always on and whatnot, as long as I sometimes get to play a single player (experience) game without others around me.

    #12 2 years ago

Don’t worry guys..he’ll be saying “It’s all about single-player” next time.

@8 Yeah, Far Cry 3 is a great example, where there is intentional immersion breaking to shoehorn in some online challenges. I don’t want to compete with my friends to see how many grunts I can run over in 1 minute. I want to sneakily (and on my own) do my thing with a bow!

Edit: My reason for single player gaming is so that I can disconnect from the world. Not be continually linked in with it. I play these games to AVOID other people. I’m not alone in this and this guy has gone from having respect to being a bit of a pariah where the gaming community is concerned.

    #14 2 years ago
  15. Malmer

I want to play a game and completely immerse myself in it with full suspension of disbelief. Not get popups or ghosts of what my friends are doing.

This just reminds me of the statements that were constantly made back when Counter-Strike, Unreal Tournament, Quake 3 and Tribes 2 ruled PC gaming. All big MP only games that had people left and right claiming the age of single player games are dead.

If Skyrim had some forced MP stuff in it people would probably hate it.

  22. Robo_1

Yup, this relentless obsession with opening up the single player experience is getting tedious. It can work for some games, sure, and I guess Dark Souls would be a good example of passive online involvement, but not every gamer wants their gaming evenings to be a social experience.

For example, Destiny’s MMO elements hold no interest for me, and if anything, will be a reason for me not to get the game.

When I play – unless I specifically choose an online experience – I generally want to relax, safe in the knowledge that my actions have no relevance beyond my own personal gratification. I don’t want to be permanently held accountable for not helping fellow players out, or not scoring enough points to assist my team.

The sharing stuff I can take or leave, but if the foundations of a single player game is altered in such a way, where I can’t just play for the sake of my own personal enjoyment, then I’ll take the hundreds I spend a year on gaming and channel it elsewhere.

    #22 2 years ago
  23. The_Red

And the notion of idiots like this guy has to go away.

Seriously, I know he’s not saying that single player itself should go away but what he says (“Connected Single-Player or Online Single-Player”) is even worse than that.
I have both Dark and Demons Soul on PS3 (Connected type games). Have enjoyed them both on and offline but if you want to add the “Always Connected” to the singleplayer part, then there is no deal for me. I didn’t buy Dialbo 3 and won’t get Destiny if it tries to do the same thing.

    #23 2 years ago
  24. fihar

    He’s right actually.
Asynchronous multiplayer will be a huge thing, especially in competitive games.
It’s not like you need to be always connected to enjoy the game itself.
I don’t know how it is in FarCry 3, but I actually like to be reminded when some dude in a bedroom in some other continent just happened to beat my time in Most Wanted.
If Skyrim had UGCs like inFamous 2, I’m pretty sure it’ll be amazing. Every open world game should have UGC IMO.
I’m actually baffled why no developers have followed in Sucker Punch’s footsteps.

    Get with the times, dinosaurs!

@25 What and stay in the world of horribly dull, predicatble and three dimensional ‘intelligence’ ? Nah you’re ok, I spend all day there.

    #26 2 years ago
  27. HauntaVirus

This would be fine if the social connectivity was optional. I personally prefer some games as single player only. Other games can benefit from what he’s talking about.

    @26:

You don’t have any gaming friends?

A shared gaming thrill is much better than a solo one, trust me!

    #28 2 years ago
  29. Samoan Spider

@28 I do, and I play with them when I’m in the mood for that kind of experience. But the only issue I have with what is said here, is that if I’m playing a Solo game, I’m generally doing that to have ‘me’ time. I am aware I can go offline, but in a constantly connected household, its difficult to take my PC off a network for purely selfish reasons. I have my shared thrills just at the moment of my choosing and in a game that suits it. The implication here is that games that don’t need it, will get a feature for the sake of it.

    Previous statements-
“Everyone will use our fucking engine. Beats UE to the punch.”
CryEngine cries in the side while everyone plays with UE4.

This guy is a total nutcase. He doesn’t know a thing about anything.

The notion of CryingTek needs to go away.

    #30 2 years ago
  31. G1GAHURTZ

    @29:

But you can have ‘me time’ in the way that Yerli has suggested, too.

For example, a single player experience where other online players are in your ‘world’, but you never have to interact with them if you don’t want to, like any ordinary NPC. Then, when you feel the need, you seamlessly jump into an online mode, and interact with them.

(No more countless drones who all took an arrow to the knee.)

For example, there are open world sections, but the missions can be SP only.

It’s basically moulding SP and MP experiences into one entity, and doing away with unnecessary menus.

Sure, this wouldn’t really work with narrative driven games and the like (like Heavy Rain), but he did say that he wasn’t talking about all SP games.

    #31 2 years ago
  32. Samoan Spider

@31 And that is a very fair point. That would work so long as they could be ignored. And provided xXXxxxHax0r133tknobxxxXXxx doesn’t float around the middle of the screen then I’m ok with it

How did he come to this conclusion who did he ask, what research did he do where the fuck is his consensus. I’m sure if you ask the likes of Bethesda, irrational, bioware, CDproject they would all disagree. His personal opinion has only been shaped by the fact crytek now have there own social game service gface which coincidentaly is fucking shit and will fail miserably. Thats the problem with the industry as it stands dev are beginning to listen more and more to there own flacid hype than what actual gamers want. The single player wont go away but it will more than likely become tainted from the tacked on crap of gun challenges and time trials. Let’s hope the few devs out there stick to there guns and carry on producing games gamers want.

Yeah, when I hear stupid garbage like this, I can only hope the gaming industry comes crashing like it did in 84′.
