Real Racing 3 reviews begin, get the scores here
Real Racing 3 is the realistic free-to-play racing sim from EA and Firemonkeys. It just hit iOS today, however, the constant micro-payment harassment has left some reviewers cold. Others don’t seem to mind at all. You be the judge below.

The game’s micro-payment model got many critics and gamers understandably upset, as previous games in the series haven’t gone heavy-handed in the cost department.
That has all changed with Real Racing 3, thanks to the game’s micro-payment backbone. Many reviewers have overlooked the issue, suggesting that it’s not as bad as people first thought.
You decide:
CVG – 7/10
Eurogamer – 3/10
IGN – 9.1/10
Touch Arcade – 4/5
Pocket Gamer – 9/10
CNET – 4/5
Modojo – 3/5
Got a score? Whack it below and I’ll add it to the list when I can.

I’m just not sure I trust Eurogamer’s review scores anymore. For me, GameSpot remains the gold standard when it comes to reviews.

The Eurogamer review isn’t the best read but I agree with them on slamming this micro transaction bullshit.
Also, love that IGN score. Legit.

Ok, what is going on here? 9 from IGN and PG but 3 from Eurogamer? Something’s terribly wrong here.
EDIT: After reading the EG review, I think they are kinda spot on because it’s not the gameplay that is horrible. It’s the micro transaction / money stealing system that ruins the game.

“Microtransaction Racing” it seems as someone over at EG creatively pointed out!

No it’s fine honestly, EA says so… They say we love microtransactions!

From what I read, IGN reviewed it as a game, ignoring the microtransactions. EG reviewed it including the microtransactions, and how they affect the game.

EG is right to lower the score because of the microtransactions, since those waiting times can actually ruin the gameplay experience.
But ayway, I don’t understand why anyone wants to play a sim racer with motion sensor and/or touchscreen controls.

I’ve been playing this game for a few weeks now. It’s really funny that the game has been released for such a long time in loooooots of countries and even updated a few times.
So. The graphics are amazing on iPad 4 and quite ok on iPhone 4 (not really that super different from RR2).
The soundtrack reminds me a lot of the ones made by Lance Hayes for Forza 3 and Forza 4 and I like it a lot.
Physics were tuned up a little bit and seemed a little bit better than in RR2.
Time Shift multiplayer is a really brilliant idea and integrates in the game flawlessly. Even reminded me of Game Cnter existence
The realism of car maintenance seems like really good idea at a first glance but a few moments later you totally know that it is unnecessary for such game and is implemented only for the sake of microtransactions. After a few races you have to change oil in the car. It takes about 10-15 minutes of real time. Or a few coins to skip it. The coins can be obtained leveling up your driver (quite insufficient method) or by buying them. Ok, I can wait 10 minutes. But after 10-15 races you have to get into some serious engine maintenance which takes up to 5 (!!!) real time hours. So either you change car (but you can’t since you have only one car in the beginning), quit the game for 5 hours or open up your wallet. That’s ridiculous.
And after playing for a few weeks I can tell you that the game becomes very difficult by it’s half begging you to get over yourself and pay for some coins.
Sorry guys, but I cracked it and now I started it over with 10m of money and 38000 gold coins. Now the game looks very promising to me

EA ruined this IP with their F2P bullshit. Wait for Oil and Tires and pay crazy amount of money for new cars instead of unlocking them, really? I would gladly pay $15 to play this game but those In-App purchases ruined it for me. No thanks, Firemonkeys – milk those schoolchilds or their parents.
Eurogamer has it right, thank you!

True. It’s kinda sad because it may be a great game ruined by bad micro transactions. When it comes to free-to-play games, I think both the gameplay AND the money making system should be judged because a badly implemented micro transaction system COULD ruin the game by increasing the amount of boring grind and other things.
