PS4 APU “by far the most powerful” AMD has produced

Thursday, 28 February 2013 05:27 GMT By Brenna Hillier

AMD global business manager John Taylor has said the accelerated processing unit in the PlayStation 4 is the best the company has ever produced.

“We have not built an APU quite like that for anyone else in the market,” Taylor told the Inquirer.

“It is by far the most powerful APU we have built to date.”

Taylor said the APU leverages new tech which will appear in AMD’s new generation A-series later this year, which will be sold directly to consumers.

“None that will quite be to that level of sheer number of cores, sheer number of teraflops,” he added.

The PlayStation 4 has an x86 APU, and that AMD will be selling similar tech directly to PC users shows just how PC-like the console’s architecture is – but it’s worth remembering that the custom tech has been specially designed through a collaboration between the two companies, so you can’t just rebuild a PS4 in your basement.

Sony hasn’t released full tech specs, but the console has 8GB of RAM and can churn out over 1.8 teraflops of processing power.

Thanks, Dragon 246.

Wait couldn’t Cell do 1.8 teraflops by itself? Also all this spec talk I’m sure Microsoft has to see they have to go bigger and better right? Is AMD admitting that the 720 isn’t as powerful as the PS4? Why is everyone going with AMD also and not NVIDIA? I know Microsofts reason.

  10. OmegaSlayer

PS4 will be better than a PC built with the same specs.
Better bus, better optimization, better memory management with less OS tasks going at the same time.

So, PS4 games will be FAR better than a PC with the same specs because everything will be better optimized to work with those unified specs.

on a side note.. a lot of people really don’t get how games are made, i mean just look at the beauty that is UC3 and than look at Dark souls, both are running on the same hardware, and DS2 looks like shit where as Uc3 looks better than a ton of PC games, so it’s more about the teams that are making the game, and there ability to squeeze the living shiz-nit out of the system, than the amount of cuda-cores on your gtx.

  16. Samoan Spider

@9 Yeah, you’re quite right. I read that somewhere. But the rest of the architecture combined with that 256+256 memory set up really did shaft the chances of using that horsepower. That’s why distributed computing tasks were so good, whereas gaming related tasks weren’t. However now the rest of the system is capable of so much more, combined with an easy (ish) architecture to code for and you’ve got some serious possibilities (Depends how well the devs get to grips with multi-threading for 8 cores).
By contrast, bear in mind that MS were able to more or less match the PS3 graphically with far less horsepower so I think that anyone discounting MS at this point is a blind fool even with this comment about the APU. Anyway, I have a 7850 which the GPU here is based on so I’m pretty pleased about how this could turn out for me if the PC versions get some of the console optimisations.

Yea Number 1, I am really curious guys I’m not a computer expert, but will the PS4 support Tressfx technology? It looks really nice for the next game gen, almost like cgi hair. Not trying to get anyone mad.

    #17 2 years ago
  18. Samoan Spider

@17 No reason why not. From what I can tell, its up to the devs to use it as a plug in for their engine because it works with the DX11 APIs.

    #18 2 years ago
  19. Gadzooks!

We don’t have one single piece of confirmed spec for the 720 yet, apart from that it will be using very similar architecture, so there’s really no point in making power comparisons. Save it for April ;)

The 720 could compensate with a number of options:

    - A faster discrete GPU

    - The 32mb eDram could make up the shortfall

    - The mysterious ‘Data Move Engine’ could be a form of bit blitter, which could be a huge boost to geometry, AI and texture population, etc..

It’s all conjecture at this point though.

This gen we had one machine with a stronger CPU and weaker GPU vs. stronger GPU and weaker CPU. The net result was, on balance, almost complete parity. It could well end up the same for the next gen. We just don’t know yet.

That is if MS want to compete on specs at all. Maybe they want to compete on price instead? For power users like us that would be disappointing, but for targeting the gaming masses that could be a good strategy.

The only thing we know for sure is that very similar architectures for PS4, 720 and PC mean that developers are going to be happy because they will have to spend less time bespoking, which means they can spend more time on the things that count like honing controls, AI, physics, level design, etc.

That’s a win for every single one of us.

Of course that’s all moot if MS decide to focus on Kinect. In which case it’s game over and they may as well quit now.

  20. PC_PlayBoy

PS4 is already old tech. Why would anyone want to build a new PC round such tech when they can get better components?

Anyway, Intel is where it’s at. AMD suck

We’ll be playing emulated PS4 games on our PC in the next 5 years. Easy.

Can we get rid of this trolling piece of crap, PLEASE???

    #21 2 years ago
  22. Samoan Spider

@20 wrong on the old tech. This is new tech, hence AMD talking about it. The point is that you can build an equivalent PC (I have almost exactly the same, just a 4 core CPU instead of an 8 Core APU) but you wont get the optimisations that come with console development so the point is moot. I accept this and I’m very happy with how my games look and run. Now to counter your childish Intel comment, Intel haven’t got an APU of this nature and quality available. Can you imagine and Atom powered PS4? Me neither, so back in your box mate, your being a tosser and giving PC players a bad name AGAIN!

I think a lot of people need some education about the x86 architecture: x86 is the architecture, 64 bit is an extension. x64 or x86-64 is just a quick colloquial way of differentiating between that & the former 32bit extension. In fact, x86 originally started as 16 bit.

PS4 APU “by far the most powerful” that is based on Jaguar the successor to Brazos 2.0. END OF STORY.
MY grandmother PC with Dual core i3 will have more power then this shit because cores mean nothing when there are “Logical processors”.
AMD chipsets are so cheap and that’s the reason why they always losing in the market compared to Intel not to mention that AMD stuff is just cheaper in general.

+ it’s AMD. their processors are the weakest on the market compared to any Intel’s architecture.

I see where you are coming from. I enjoyed the hip-hop during my teenage years in the 90s. I can’t really get into the trash that they play nowadays.

In any case, I never heard of gametagrarido until I’ve seen in on N4G and the only reason I clicked on the link is because they had M. Patcher as a guest (believe it or not, I enjoy his input on the gaming industry)

But I should’ve known better with a site with the name gamertag in it. All they did was bash the PS4 and stated it was a “ok” performance. But I know if I can call these guys journalists. All of us on here can get together and create a site and report on what we like and don’t like about these manufacturers, does that make us journalists?

If consoles had great keyboard and mouse support, I’d buy one tomorrow. Only thing is that I find controllers annoying for FPS games.

There are games that I enjoy a lot more, using a controller… I might add

I’d say the reason that Sony and others are using PC-like architecture is to make it easier for developers to run their game engines accross multiple platforms.

PS4 will be king for a while, but as we all know and if Moore’s law holds true, then we’ll have PCs twice as powerful 18 months or so after it’s release.

The only reason its the most powerful APU that AMD have produced is because APUs are put into laptops not desktops… (if im not mistaken).
theirs a big difference between a dedicated GPU and an APU which is GPU and a CPU combined into one.

    #43 2 years ago
  44. Kreten

It’s most powerfull APU because they didn’t do the one for xbox one as it was done custom in house based on amd apu (these people always get you, unless u think carefully what they are saying)

  45. wildBoar

@20 Both PS4 and X1 utilize AMD, all next gen games, their PC equivalents included, will most likely be optimised for AMD tech, it’s this gen’s standard tech. When pretty much every game engine will be optimised for AMD, I doubt Intel or even Nvidia is a very strong choice.
You’ll propably get way more diminishing returns from that kind of hardware at least, one thing’s sure and that’s that AMD has struck gold with these deals. Practically gotten a monopoly over gaming hardware for the next 10 years or so.

    #45 2 years ago
  46. Christopher Jack

Well the A10-6800K is about as powerful as a low end 3rd gen i5

    #46 2 years ago
  47. Christopher Jack

@45, You have really overestimated AMD. I love to root for the underdog & I love AMD’s generally great performance/price ratio but I don’t think having their processors & GPUs in both next gen consoles is going to make a difference to how games are developed for PC, nor much of an impact on Intel+Nvidia’s sales.

    #47 2 years ago
  48. SAimNE

@47 you are really underestimating AMD. the apu was already a pretty solid option for low-mid gaming while paying 15-30% less than a similar spec intel+nvidia combo. Add in the options of GDDR5(most likely on board) and possibly even DDR4 in the near future, and you have further improvements. Then you can slap on the fact that HSA is turning out to have been an extremely sound investment of their time, and then finally add in mantle to up the gpu utilization, better driver support to increase the dual graphics options, and truaudio to make even less strain on the cpu when gaming

apus completely dominate the low-mid gaming market for anyone who has a brain, and it looks like they may break into the mid-high range gaming market in the gen after kaveri(or maybe even with kaveri)

if you dont believe me you should actually spend a little bit of time going over the architecture and proposed gameplans amd has been releasing in the recent months. I am interested in haswell(especially the power efficiency) but nowhere near as interested in it as an apu that can easily wipe the floor with it in gaming for 2/3rds the price.

Would all the pc users shitting hyperbole please stop, you lower the IQ rating of the entire net.

I’ve been a pc gamer all of my days, since 286′s, but I wouldn’t be blinkered enough to claim ‘teh consoles are shit. pc is leeeeeeet!’

Pc’s do MANY, MANY things, but the games part comes about though sheer grunt brute force, usually because of piss poor optimisation. Consoles do ONE thing, they play games, they are built for it and optimised for it.. and they do it well (apart from resolution, and aparently the xbone 180, yes I disparage it but only because of the major screw up MS made, still can’t generally do 1080p even this gen.. that’s a bad point). Consoles will be faster in general for the games they run for about 2 years before our new gpus manage to outrun the new memory architectures through sheer horsepower.. that’s not a boast, it’s just physics/moore’s law/obvious from past performance…. So at the end of the day it matters not a jot, except for the fact that the pc will benefit from easy porting..NICE.

My point, before my brain sidetracked me, was… AMD have officially pissed me off, and I’ll never buy their brand again despite them being the majority of my gpu spending decisions over the years… and WHY?, do I hear you ask? Because despite the PC market keeping amd going, that they are afloat ‘JUST’ is simply due to their own mistakes in the market, they kept all of their major innovations and put most of their research into a different market, effectively selling substandard second class goods to the pc market, whilst dealing with the consoles to give them better tech…. and YES, THAT PISSES ME OFF.

AMD can go fuck themselves for any further business for me, as far as I am concerned, they are no longer relevent, and can stay wth their new friends, who they obviously prefer to court over their existing loyal market.

So, in summary, console v PC.. no biggie.. we should all, instead, save our angst to give the hardware companies a kick in the balls.
