MGR: Revengeance tops in Japan, Vita outsells Wii U

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was the clear winner on the Media Create charts in Japan, moving 308,681 units on PS3. 3DS sales were down, but both models still maintained the numer one and two spots on the hardware chart. PS3 took third place with an uptick in sales, moving 18,529 units compared to 16,934 the week prior, likely this can be attributed to the release of MGR: Revengeance. Vita sales were also up over the week prior to 11,456 compared to the 8,044 units sold the prior period. It’s unclear when looking at the top 20 what caused the surge in sales, but the handheld outsold Wii U for the first time. Full charts are below.

The 3DS systems outsold everything else combined.

Nintendo needs to move fast on the WiiU or it is going to be a long console gen for them. Maybe they are better off switching to handheld only.

Vita price cut announced, Vita surges in sales.
Not difficult to figure out.

@3 – Yeah that’s what I was gonna say though wasn’t sure if it was in effect for that period?

WiiU price-cut wouldn’t help at this point, with no real software in sight, I guess. If Nintendo comes without Killer-titles at E3 they’ll get mashed.

The Vita pricecut doesn’t begin till Feb.28.

Will be interesting to see if Vita takes out 3DS next week then!

Knowing how the price drop ANNOUNCED but was NOT in effect, the increase in those numbers is kinda baffling. I just hope Sony has some special Vita exclusive prepared to release when the price drops.

I stand corrected then.
did Sony announce some sort of special software in Japan or something?
I know they eat crazy shit up.

EDIT: also, I notice that Vita sells more than WiiU in terms of hardware, but not a single Vita game makes the top 20, while 2 WiiU games do.

LMFAO the original PSP almost out sold the Wii U woooooooooooooooooooooooow thats crazy funny man. Nintendo….Nintendo….Nintendo…. :(

Wow and look at those Wii numbers. I’m wondering if SONY was still selling the PS2 would it have beaten the Wii? Of course it would have.

…and its official the XBOX720 won’t even come out in Japan ;)

+1 @6

It’s true that the price cut was not officially in effect yet… but as it’s often the case, after a price cut announcement, stores lower their prices in order to sell some of the consoles (sometimes even putting the price cut in effect instantly).

If they didn’t do that, they would sell absolutely no console at all. So that MIGHT be an explanation.

@11 Which is what I was wondering, because I looked at the top 30 on GAF and the only title listed is Demon Gaze which isn’t a new title. So, @13 may be right in that stores went ahead and lowered the price a few days early.

Vita doesn’t have to sell software when it has PS+ and this doesn’t cover digital sales does it?

@15 Nope. No digital sales, only physical.

Going to be interesting trying to track game sales or platform health next gen as more and more stuff becomes digital.

@17 Agree. It’s much easier to rely on stores for tracking, especially when developers aren’t very willing to hand over digital figures. Hopefully, when we do “go digital”, things will become more transparent.

Now, 2 things-
According to COMG! pre-order charts, 2 vita games (senran kagura and PSO) have more than 100k pre-orders.
Also, vita digital sales are VERY significant. Just an example- Demon Gaze has 50% in digital and Monpiece has 35%. Very big chunks indeed.
It seems 1-2 retailers had decreased the prices early (but reverted), as at least one of them changed their pricing on their site early on, which fueled speculation had Sony will announce a price cut.
Vita has a very robust lineup planned for 2-3 months, hopefully this along with price cut helps sales, but Soul Sacrifice doesn’t seem to be doing hot in pre-orders. Hopefully it sells well.

@Red,
They indeed have. On 28th, PSO bundle goes on sale, and on 7th soul sacrifice bundle (looks dope)

@Dragon
Thanks for the info. PSO bundle could be huge. Not sure about Soul Sacrifice but that’s the one Vita game I’m rather interested in.

Although I seriously hope vita doesn’t sell before 28th, because the ignorant buyer will get very pissed afterwards.

@25 – No, it’s just showing that when you’re respectful to a franchise’s history and treat it with the reverence it deserves, while expanding on the established characters and canon, the fanbase will be more receptive towards your game, even if it’s a different genre than the original, as opposed to if you act like you know better than them and feel the need to erase everything that has been established as being why people are into a franchise in the first place.
