Battlefield 3 produces over 1 TB of data every day

Despite being more than a year old, Battlefield 3 is still in such demand that its users generate more than 1 terabyte of data every day.

The figure was supplied to VentureBeat by EA chief technology officer Rajat Taneja.

EA tracks more than 50 telemetry events for each player in every Battlefield 3 match, Taneja said. Every 15 minutes, Battlefield 3 players throw 3.9 million grenades, destroy 648,000 vehicles and create 24 million explosions, he added.

It’s not just Battlefield; EA follows many other titles including its incredibly successful The Simpsons Tapped Out, which has 120 telemetry events. Players have spent more than 1.97 billion donuts, placed 7.36 million Kwik-E-Mart stores and built 3.43 million Krusty Burger restaurants to generate 14.5 TB of date each month.

EA has 275 million registered users, monitors 2 billion play sessions per month, and records 50 TB of data every day.

That EA stores all this information certainly explains why the publisher might be looking to reduce its data storage costs. Taneja said that EA will soon need to track 2 billion gamers across all platforms, as opposed to “just” 200 million console users.

I played bf3 on PC for the first time today I was disappointed that almost no one was online and the servers that had players were really bad i.e. 1500 tickets metro. I would have thought the PC version would be the most popular

Epic! I’ve switched to GW2 now but I’m glad BF3 still does so good. It’s a very good game.

pc gaming will never be as popular as console sadly. im a strict pc gamer myself. the masses just don’t have the know how to build a gaming rig even building one on a strict budget. I have both a $2000 rig and a $500 rig that has graphics that look better than current gem consoles.

@1 That’s very hard to believe. Did you make sure to experiment with the server browser filters? For example: to immediately see nearly full servers, choose 1-5 for the ‘Free slots’ filter.
Looking at the real-time stats at the PC community is quite active compared to consoles, considering the PC version probably sold less.
