Australian retailer prices PS4 at $899

EB Games Australia has opened pre-orders for the PlayStation 4 at $899, which is about £600/€700/¥86,000. Australian prices tend to be quite a bit higher than international price points after currency conversion. For comparison, the 60GB PlayStation 3 originally launched at $999 in Australia, which is now worth about £670/€780/¥96,000, but the PS3 actually retailed at £425/€599/¥59,980 in respective territories. In any case, it’s just an estimate at this stage.

Thanks, adumicic.

It really is kind of retarded. When I went to Australia USD and AUD was 1:1, but everything there was 2-3 times more expensive :S

Well it’s only a placeholder, so there is no saying what the final price will be.

Regardless, we pay a lot more compared to other regions. >=[

@1, It’s often referred to as the Australia Tax. It’s basically “We charge more for the same product, because we can.”

EBgames is also the most expensive dedicated game retailer in Aus.

799: The Sequel to 599! But in all seriousness, the console will come in to forms and they will cost $400 and $500 respectively.

I have spoken with an EB Games store Manager. She has stated: “When there is no official price given, EB HQ in Australia will overshoot the price so that they can make preorders available ASAP. This way when the actual price comes out they can adjust the preorders and give refunds of the amount of money that people paid over the RRP rather than have to ask people for more money than they have already paid.” She also stated the rumours that the price will vary from around $399-AUD TO $799-AUD depending on the size of the Hard drive. Keep in mind again that these are not solid prices and are likely to vary depending on the market and what the price of the next XBOX will be. The price will likely become more predictable once the release date of the next XBOX has been announced.

@6, Cheers for that. I wonder what the region locking will be like on this system. I guess i could buy a console from the UK, no? We both use PAL, right? Tho i guess it wouldn’t be under warranty so that might be a bad idea, any cheap places in Aus to buy consoles? Like Dungeon Crawler is for games?

Sounds like solid corporate logic to me: Let’s pull a number out of thin air that’s MORE than the product that hasn’t actually been released yet will be and charge people THAT.

“This way when the actual price comes out they can adjust the preorders and give refunds of the amount of money that people paid over the RRP rather than have to ask people for more money than they have already paid.”

^She says this as if they’re doing the customer a favor. Too funny.

Well the minimum wage in Australia is $17, but everything there cost an arm, a leg and a child.

Very interesting Anthrax, it does make more sense to hear what they said.
I just can not help but to be wary of EB Games and the over inflation retail prices of everything they sell, out of sale or promotion periods!

For everyone saying/thinking that $899 is a massive price. It is only a placeholders price, you get the extra back.

Now for those thinking/saying that it will cost an arm and a leg for us Aussies, we get paid a lot more than most other countries. So it evens itself out
