What’s the deal with the PS4′s Eye camera? I’ll tell you

The new edition of the home PlayStation console will come with a new edition of the PlayStation Eye camera that has so far not been widely used by consumers, due at least in part to lack of effort spent integrating its functions into games beyond the Move controller.

Destructoid talked to SCE Worldwide president Shuhei Yoshida last night after the PS4 reveal and got the skinny on what the deal is with the new Eye, and it seems as if it’ll be far more advanced than the current version, even going to far as to ape Kinect in some ways.

For one, the new Eye will have two cameras, allowing it to see players and their controllers in three-dimensional space. But the two cameras can specialize as well, such as how one of them could focus on recording 2D video.

The new Eye will also have a microphone on it with directional feedback. One would assume this will allow for EndWar-style voice commands*, and the directional aspect of it would probably help it filter out background noise by focusing its attention on a single location in the room, such as where the player is sitting/standing.

Beyond Yoshida’s comments, I have here a press release from Sony that details the capabilities of the new Eye a bit more. Read this:

PlayStation®4 Eye, a newly developed camera for PS4 incorporates two high-sensitive cameras that have wide-angle lenses with 85-degree diagonal angle views which can recognize the depth of space precisely. This enables PlayStation®4 Eye to cut out the image of the player from the background, or to grasp players’ position in front and behind, further broadening the ways to enjoy games. Incorporated four microphones are also capable of accurate sound detection and source origination. In addition, users will be able to login to their PS4 with face recognition and are capable of using their own body movements or voices to enjoy games more intuitively. Furthermore, PlayStation®4 Eye senses the color of DUALSHOCK®4′s light bar to judge the positions of multiple players, and set characters in the same positions or let a character talk to a particular player, enabling players to enjoy games in new way. PlayStation®4 Eye also supports PlayStation®Move motion controller. It detects the motion of PS Move more precisely, and reflects players’ in-game motion more accurately than ever.

This all sounds quite…useful? What do you think about the new Eye? Do you think you’ll get much out of it?

*I couldn’t resist saying “EndWar-style commands” instead of “Kinect-style commands.” Sorry.

I wanna know if the PS4 works without the Camera. I don’t like Cameras and I like it even less in my Livingroom. Still the only big Point where I’m worried about the PS4.

Only thing I’ve ever wanted a camera for in games is to map my face on characters..thats it.

@4, Pretty much the same here. Though with these cameras often being lower res the pictures aren’t going to be pretty.

The screen on the controller looks removable.

I get all pumped about Feb 20th… now i have to wait till E3, since I have many more questions about the console now..

I really hope that the camera isnt like the Wii where you NEED to use it… that would suck.

It comes with the console.

The Dualshock also comes with a headset, also with the console.

@Joe: But does I have to use it? Can I not connect it with the PS3, or make a tape over the Camera or leave it in a Dark Corner where it cant see a Thing, and the PS4 still works? (expect Games that makes Use of the Camera of course)

You seriously think that someone wants to hack into your hardware and just watch you?

Are you a celebrity?

@13: Well, I’m Parnoid. Camera watching me, in my Livingroom, from an “Intelligent” System that will learn to know what I what, connected with an Online Service that had some Serious Trouble about being Hacked and so on and on. And what when Sony comes with the Idea that from Watching People you can do something with Marketing and what else? Like Looking what the Heck this Guy is drinking or whatever

Im thinking about the Worst Case Szenario, and even more worse stuff. Because it can happen. And as I said, I’m Paranoid like Hell.

@11 I do :D I heard Chinese and Russian hackers were gaining access to people’s cameras and spying on them. Its fucking possible man. Plus I live in a country where people (dumb retard facebook users) give up their freedom and rights to use free services so companies can profit off of them by attaining their information.

Would you like to be able to hear and see what people are interested in so yo can collect the data and invest in the next big thing….oh Hi Kinect ;)

@15: Watch_Dogs works fine without any Camera (I know, I just ignoring the Joke)

I just don’t like the Idea of Cameras Everywhere. Not just Outside, but even Inside my House. Its freaking Scary for me, but I’m Old School. Like Privacy and all that old School Stuff.

Dude I’m with Bomba guys. Its not that I think I’m some important celeb but its the principle. These companies want to control your life and the best way to do that is gaining information. Do you know how much information you can gain just visually vs listening.

I could never live in a place like Great Britain with all those cameras. I know that stuff is set up for good reasons but people aren’t innocent and if that type of power were in the wrong hands….say someone who really hated you and wanted you dead. They’d know your every movement.

If the U.S.A. government is illegally spying on their own people you don’t think companies are. Didn’t SONY get caught secretly installing root kits in peoples computers with their software. Then think about Microsoft, Bill Gates house alone is 20 years technological beyond any other house out there. I’m not saying SONY and Microsoft will use this in their cameras (well Kinect does) I’m just saying the technology exist and you may have your privacy exploited one day.

$499.. basic $549 deluxe. .. Ps4. . Price cut to the ps3 to 199. Vita price cut to 169.99 3g 149.99 Wi-Fi. Look they know they won’t be able to make too many of the Ps4 so sell high drop the price of existing hardware (ps3) because you can meet that demand and still grow the market where you make the bulk of your money. They need a price drop for vita to move units and please CEO s. Just business. It won’t any less . Eyetoy system controller hdmi demo software 500 gig harddrive= $549..

I dunno, tea, just imagine if they sold another 70-100 million units.

about 50 million of those cameras are probably going to show nothing more than some zit faced kid screaming at getting quick scoped for the 5th time in one minute.

They’d probably get bored of looking at gamers pretty quickly…

But seriously, it would have to go up pretty high if they actually did spy on people.

I mean up to government level.

Can you imagine how much they’d have to pay out if someone ever found out that they were being spied on, through a camera, by a corporation?

Sony had to payout just for the rootkit, so what about a company getting caught watching fat teenage boys walking around in their 3 day old, unwashed underwear, Harlem shaking in their living rooms?

Nah, it’s possible, but unless you’re a celebrity or a terror threat, I can’t see why anyone would waste time watching gamers.

Google searches are more than enough info than any company/government could need, anyway…

I know its kinda silly that someone want to watch me, but the Possabiltiy is Scary enough. And even being Watched and Supervised by a Machine (the Console) and no Human is… Scary for me.

fuck the kinect ripoff
did sony forgot that the playstation main focus is games?

FFS both sony and micorosft are forgetting the core consumers
the ones who buy a console to play games not to be spyed upon or post some dumbass status on facebook

only if the cam is optinal,
i don’t see and usefull things besides voice commands from the camera
because we all know motion gaming sucks ass

If you notice in the beginning of the killzone: Shadow game play trailer, the charcter goes through a identification barrier where there is a “face” displayed of a game user. I beleive that this new eye will capture our face via 3d model and we will be able to apply it to games like NBA 2k, Mortal Kombat (next gen create a character), Madden, Killzone, mass effect, etc. In addition, I think the ability to use motion in games will be much more adapted and easier to use. For example, dodging, throwing a gernade, aiming down, etc. Finally, with the use of this new eye (privacy probably will be within the fine print as something you are giving up), we will also have the choice to either use it or not…we all have the freedom of decision, and if your not into that type of gaming integration, don’t buy (in my opinion).

My cat would love another peripheral to throw behind the television. I stopped retrieving the Wii motion sensor. It’s back there somewhere, with it’s more recent buddy, Kinect.

Were I to get one of these, and fish out the others, I wonder where the heck I would place them… but I’m confident the cat would sort it out.

IMO they should include everything including the PS eye in every PS4 box they sell – this way, devs would have a lot of features they can add to their games, since all PS4 owners would have it.

I like #30′s idea of scanning the faces for custom characters, that’d be awesome!

Honestly, as long as we can disconnect it I am fine with it. I only plug in Eye/Kinect when using them. They will probably use feeds to market to its users. Legally they will have to give us the option to opt out.
