PlayStation 4 coming Holiday 2013: all the info from NYC

Tuesday, 19 February 2013 18:37 GMT By Staff

PlayStation 4 was announced in New York today, and is due by the end of the year. Get all the details and the scoop on next-gen games.

Live video for mobile from Ustream

The presentation began in the usual way, with flashing lights and a slick marketing video declaring that “PlayStation wants to win” the war, using imagination as a weapon. A montage of curent and past PlayStation titles like Gran Turismo, God of War and LittleBigPlanet heralded Sony’s declaration that it grew up “different” and a “renegade”

Sony boss Andrew House then took the stage. “The stakes are high for what we’re going to show you,” he said, saying Sony’s making a “bold leap” by strengthening the PlayStation ecosystem with hardware, software and network interfacing.

The living room is no longer the centre of entertainment, House said – the gamer is. He talked up connectivity between devices and social aspects, and promised Sony will continue to unlock the Vita’s potential, as well as expand to smartphones and other mobile devices – with details to come later this year.

PS4 hardware

All this was leading into the news we all knew was coming: PlayStation 4. It’s real.

Mike Cerny, lead system architect on PlayStation, then took the stage, confirming that development started five years ago.

Cerny said that Sony is very proud of the Cell architecture the PS3 used, but with the PS4 it wanted to ensure nothing came between the gamer and the game. It spoke to developers and used their feedback to construct a new system which would enable development, not complicate it, using familiar components.

The new console will be PC-like to develop for, with 8GB of RAM and almost two teraflops of power. An Unreal Engine 4 demo was shown.

He then showed off the Dual Shock 4, also produced in conjunction with developer feedback. The controller has improved triggers, sticks and rumble; reduced latency; and a headphone jack. As rumoured, it includes a touch pad and motion sensor, and partners with a camera.

Cerby said the new console has a lower power state which can be initiated or cancelled with a single button press. It can be triggered in-game, with play state preserved in RAM.

Steph is on-site in New York and will have a full report in the morning. No pricing details were given. PS4 is said to be launching at £300, according to documents that leaked over the weekend.

PS4 Network

Cerny said digital games can be played even as they are being downloaded, and some clever video tech means seamless upload of gameplay recording using share button.

Players can spectate others’ play over a network – and even take over gameplay from them to assist in difficult sections. Developers will be able too implement systems where players can donate items to others.

A new friends system will be based on social networks, enhancing connections between “real-world” acquaintances. Facebook and Ustream were mentioned.

The network will also learn from the player, using metrics to determine what kind of games you might be keen on. “Our long term goal is to reduce download times to zero,” Cerny said.

Gaikai CEO Dave Perry was next to present, saying that Gaikai and Sony’s long term goal is to make all games available instantly from the PlayStation Store.

“Try it for free, share it if you like it, and pay only for the games you fall in love with,” he said.

Perry also announced Vita Remote Play for the PS4. Like the Wii U’s Game Pad, the console will be able to stream games directly to the handheld, allowing you to play while your TV is busy elsewhere. Sony said its long term goal is to make every title compatible.

The PS4 will support existing SEN services such as Music Unlimited, and Sony’s working to bring companies like Netflix onboard.

Perry said Sony has fully greenlit a project to make every PlayStation 1, 2, 3 games playable via PlayStation Cloud, a service accessible from all PlayStation devices. It will be rolled out in phases.

In a hype reel, Sony talked up its ambition to eliminate update, download and install times – something the PS3′s detractors will be pleased to note.

PS4 games

Early in the presentation, Sony said all game demos were “live”, suggesting they’re running off a PlayStation 4, not pre-rendered footage.

The first PS4 game shown was called Knack, a new effort from Sony Japan with impressive, Pixar-like cartoon graphics.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

Later, we got a look at Killzone: Shadow Fall. The first-person perspective video showed an incredibly detailed future city which looked like something out of a cutscene, but Steph confirmed she could see a player controlling the demo, and it quickly transitioned into a shooting section. There were some beautiful light and dust effects, and character animations were remarkably lifelike.

I was already having a little cry of joy when Sony brought out Matt Southern from Evolution Studios to show off the game the studio has “always wanted to make”. DriveClub was trademarked nine years ago – “we’ve literally waited for the technology to become available”, Southern said.

DriveClub is all about working in teams – collaborative driving. Players form real clubs, and battle others in asynchronous and real-time multiplayer. It connects to mobile devices so players can issue challenges and win glory for their clubs. “Weekend long, thousand-player tournaments” are on the cards, apparently.

Southern said Evolution has worked with the best car manufacturers in the work to recreate the cars in “loving obsession” with custom built photo-metric apparatus. “We’ve gone borderline insane,” Southern said, detailing how every layer of paint; the microfibres of interior trim; and the amount of wax on headlights have been recreated. The fabric even looks different depending on which way the material has been brushed, he claimed.

InFamous: Second Son

Sucker Punch’s Nate Fox introduced his team’s new game – InFamous: Second Son. The new game explores post-9/11 security measures taken to their extreme – it seemed quite Orwellian – and features a new superhero, Delsin Rowe.

Next, Sony reaffirmed its commitment to the indie scene by introducing Braid creator Jonathan Blow, whose next game, The Witness, will be console exclusive to PlayStation 4; a PC version is probably still on the cards, though. Blow boasted that the open-world puzzler has 25 hours of gameplay and “no filler”. Detractors of adorable side-scrolling indies will be delighted to learn the first-person view showed full 3D graphics.

Quantic Dream’s David Cage followed, saying that all he wants from next-gen hardware is the opportunity to convey emotion and get players involved with games. He said that the PS4 has brought games to the point where it can finally live up to films for emotive potential. The developer has created a new engine for the console.

Characters in Heavy Rain were a couple of thousand polygons; the Kara tech demo characters had 20,000; Beyond: Two Souls will have about 30,000, Cage said. He didn’t give a figure for PS4, instead showing a render of an old man’s face, but said there are no more limitations besides imagination. Cage did not announce a new game, obliquely referencing “future titles”.

Media Molecule turned up next, ready to unveil its “mystery”. Alex Evans said the developer wants to help people create, and to “cut through all the crap”, and allow users to “record their dreams”. Wanting to escape the “tyranny of the polygon”, the team spent years working on ways to allow users to create digitally using technology like motion capture.

In the end, Media Molecule chose the Move controller, noting that it hadn’t like it at first. “Dear Move controller, I’m sorry it took us so long,” Evans said, showing off real-time 3D sculpting. “You just hold your controller and click to create your dream,” he added.

As well as sculpting and collage, the tool allows users to control characters, giving performances which are then recorded. Four Media Molecule staffers were shown controlling characters playing drums, keyboard, and guitar, and dancing, to result in a short film. No title was given for the tech demo; it’s not clear if it will evolve into a commercial release.

“Virtually every major third-party partner” in the world will support the PlayStation 4, Andrew House said, introducing Yoshinori Ono.

“It feels good to finally be able to talk about this stuff,” Ono said, giving a brief history of how PlayStation and Capcom have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship. The publisher has a new engine for next-gen, the Panta Rhei, and Ono introduced a new property – Deep Down.

The demo showed medieval-style characters engaged in combat with some kind of draconic beastie, which breathed some lovely fire. The characters were overwhelmed and the screen cut to Yoshi Ono sending a request for help over the SEN.

Knack

Square Enix sent its chief technology officer to present the Agni’s Philosophy Luminous Engine demo; it’s not a game, and we’ve seen it before, but this time it was demonstrated running on the PS4, not high-end development PCs.

There were grumblings from the peanut gallery but Square Enix then announced a new Final Fantasy title to debut at E3 2013.

Ubisoft was next, showcasing Watch Dogs which, as expected, is set to arrive on PlayStation 4 at system launch. The publisher reiterated the game’s smartphone connectivity – players will be able to view maps to tap into traffic controls and other services – before moving onto a demo, again played live on stage by a demonstrator, but this time on a PC.

Protagonist Aiden was seen using his phone to access information about NPCs as he wandered the open world before becoming embroiled in a fire fight and fleeing police. The city’s security camera network was used to locate him, showing the two-edged sword of surveillance.

Blizzard owes me a new monitor, because by turning up on a console stage it caused me to do an amusingly extravagant spit take. Chris Metzen confirmed Sony and Blizzard have entered into a strategic partnership through which it will “take over the world”. Diablo 3 is coming to PS3 and PS4, he confirmed.

Watch Dogs

The console version isn’t just a port; it has a new control method whereby players are directly in control of a character’s actions rather than triggering abilities from hotkeys, and will have a four-player, full-screen co-op mode.

One final publisher turned up to the party – Activision. CEO Eric Hirshberg promised full support for the PS4 with “multiple titles” from its “best developers during the launch window”. More information was promised later this year, hinting at a Call of Duty reveal, but while Infinity Ward wasn’t ready to show anything, Bungie is: Destiny. The sizzle reel shown included some brief snippets of in-engine footage.

Bungie staff said they’re very excited to expand to a larger audience now that it’s no longer Microsoft-owned, and confirmed the shared worlds shooter is coming to both PS3 and PS4, and will have exclusive content specifically for the PS4.

It’s funny how everyone boarded the hype train and are all so sure it’s the PS4 when sony didn’t said anything what this could be. I hope it is, but I’m not so hyped yet.

I like how we’re so sure that it’s an announcement for PS4 that we’re not even entertaining the idea it could be something completely different. I mean, I know it’s next to impossible that it isn’t a PS4 announcement, but when we’re so certain it’ll be the case that we refer to the livestream of the event as PS4 announcement, it’s going to be funny if PS4 is nowhere to be seen.

Of course, it wouldn’t be funny if people then started getting mad with Sony that PS4 wasn’t announced because of their jumping to conclusions.

For some reason I’m not all that excited about a PS4 announcement, though. I can’t imagine PS4 or XBox 720 being anything really special. If anything, I’m anticipating the overall experience feeling like a step down. Though the Share button idea was a really good one, I can’t say how many times I found myself wishing that I had video of something awesome or hilarious I did in a game.

Personally, I would like to hear something about the PS Vita 2, maybe a redesign, with better cameras and maybe on-board storage. I’m not interested that much for the PS4, as I’m probably be picking it many years later down the road, like I did with my PS3.

Anyhow, still excited to see what SONY can deliver.

I bet it’s all about Playstation and the Playstation brand. Center of all will be PS4. But they certainly try something bigger to establish the Playstation brand amongst all of their hardware: TVs, smartphones, tablets(the view that are sold), Vita, PS4. Many games playable via Gaikai. Playstation everywhere might be their motto…

“My money is on it being a Gaikai event.. talking about how its going to be used.”

My local mainstream media was reporting on exactly that yesterday and today. I live in NY. But that means absolutly nothing. Them guys don’t know what a game is unless it bites em in the ass. However, PS4 aside, tomorrows event will be talking about Gaikai.

    Also:

“I bet it’s all about Playstation and the Playstation brand. Center of all will be PS4. Seems pretty spot on to me. I wouldn’t be shocked if we didn’t get too much onfo right now on stuff like launch day or price or even specs. I wouldn’t be blown away if we did get those things. But I have a feeling this is more about Playstation as a brand, the pieces of the puzzle(Gaikai, Vita/PS3 price cut), the intent to expand it….more info coming at E3.

I’m 90% sure it’ll be called Playstation 4, why wouldn’t it? They’d kinda have to remake their logo since it’s got a big ”P” in it, and that logo is also present on the ”leaked” controller shots.

The name’s the billion dollar question, innit. Not sure how they can’t call it PlayStation 4, really.

    #41 2 years ago
  42. Hunam

After they called their handheld the Vita anything is possible though.

    #42 2 years ago
  43. Erthazus

They will call it Playstation 4. I don’t see the reason why they can’t do this. Stupid “death” thing in Japan is stupid.

Metal Gear Solid 4 – Japan
    Final Fantasy 4 – Japan
    Yakuza 4 – Japan
    Dragon Quest 4 – Japan
    Street fighter IV – Japan

It will be called PS4 I’m sure :)

    #45 2 years ago
  46. Hcw87

”Want to come to my place to play some Orbis?”
”Want to come to my place to play some PS4?”

Which sounds better? Exactly. Orbis sounds like a name for a flash game.

  47. TheBlackHole

    @41

My money is on it being called PLAYSTATION. Nothing more.

Think how the iPad is now just the iPad, but it has iterative improvements.

    #47 2 years ago
  48. Hcw87

    @47
Would be confusing. People wouldn’t know whether you talk about the PS3 or PS4 when mentioning it.

    #48 2 years ago
  49. Beta

Just calling it Playstation would confuse things.

Especially considering the PS3 is a long way off being dead, so there’d be a PS3 and a Playstation on the market. Might as well add the 4 because that’s what everyone would call it anyway.

    #49 2 years ago
  50. TheBlackHole

Perhaps. They can’t continue to use numbers ad infinitum though – there’s a point where it starts to sound stupid.

    #50 2 years ago
  51. manamana

@48+49 if Apple did it, everyone can.

    #51 2 years ago
  52. Patrick Garratt

It’s got to be PlayStation 4. They can’t turn their back on the brand with the main box.

    #52 2 years ago
  53. Dave Cook

One thing is for sure, PlayStation 4, or whatever it is will stop being just about the unit. It – and Xbox 720, whatever you want to call it – will become a service. It’s not just about games, it’s how much cross-functionality, social integration, asynchronous features with phones and multimedia you can cram into one box. They’re becoming set-top boxes, not just gaming rigs.

If you think this sounds horrible, then next-gen is not for you.

    #53 2 years ago
  54. MadFingerz

@50 O RLY? Final Fantasy says hello. The number part of the name will never be a problem but the console itself might evolve and be called something else than playstation later on.

    #56 2 years ago
  57. TD_Monstrous69

@ Patrick and Dave, I think both of you are right. If Sony doesn’t show anything about the next generation, then they’ve truly blown an opportunity. The one thing I’m truly hoping is true that was rumored awhile back is the level of multitasking that the next PlayStation is capable of. Also, might be in the minority on this one, but that share functionality sounds like a cool idea, would love to see how that works.

    #57 2 years ago
  58. Beta

If I didn’t have to go to work in 10 mins I’d probably just sleep through tonight and most of tomorrow.. But as it is I’m on the night shift. :’)

Since I’ve grown up with the PlayStation I can’t help but get excited when a new one comes out. I’ll be here bang on 11PM tomorrow ;D

    #58 2 years ago
  59. Moonwalker1982

    @53

True true. But it seems Sony especially is still very focused on games. Of course most of those reports have been rumours, but still. With Xbox 360 these last few years it has become clear that MS is aiming much more for that than Sony is doing. We’ll see tomorrow :D

What if it ended up being called “Playstation Evolution?” There’d probably be just as many “Ah! It was right in front of our faces!” as there’d be, “THAT’S FUCKING LAME!”

    #62 2 years ago
  63. salarta

Perhaps Playstation Revolution, to you know, encourage people to get on the front lines of the great console war. Can only play Hyperdimension Neptunia so much before jiggly-boobed renditions of consoles aren’t enough!

  64. Gekidami

    @43
“Metal Gear Solid 4 – Japan
    Final Fantasy 4 – Japan
    Yakuza 4 – Japan
    Dragon Quest 4 – Japan
    Street fighter IV – Japan”

Japan gets around the issue by calling the forth game in a series “Four” in English rather than “Shi” in Japanese (which also means “death”). So the PS4 could indeed be called PS4, though it would be Four said in English.
I dont really think the issue would have ever came up either way seeing as the PlayStation is always pronounced in English in Japan anyway, and i’m pretty sure the PS2 & 3 also use the English numbers, so in the end it would just come off as the continuation of their usual naming method. I really doubt having a 4 in there bothers Sony, if they call it something else it’ll most likely just be them wanting to change, like calling the Vita just that rather than the PSP2.

    #64 2 years ago
  65. Telepathic.Geometry

@Geki: Yup, in Japan PS3 is “Pray Stay Sree” so I’m sure the PS4 will be “Pray Stay Foh”.

Sounds like a dragon’s word of power, doesn’t it. :)

    #66 2 years ago
  67. TheBlackHole

    @52

Eh? How is removing the number turning your back on the brand. The name IS the brand. I’ll mention Apple again, because they hold brand above everything else, and they did exactly the same thing with the iPad.

Also, Dave (@53), I wholeheartedly disagree. Consoles are still the go-to platform for living room gaming, regardless of how disinterested you are in a media hub. As it has been over the last ten years, most of the added ‘media’ stuff is optional, and so that will remain.

Is anyone is surprised that this event has most of the things under wraps, unlike past Sony events. We still don’t know anything major about the console except the controller (which may also be a PR managed leak).
Also, isnt it odd that the latest video only shows one big ps ip, the gt? Maybe we will see GT 6 prologue here. Contrary to popular belief, polyphony puts out a game EVERY 2 YEARS, and this is their longest break since the start.
My body is Reggie to be Kazified !

    #71 2 years ago

I honestly think I’m going to hear a load of bullshit about subscription fees, and not including BC, and cross-platform bullshit with my mobile of the sort that I don’t want (i.e. facebook, game grinding, etc.)

If that happens, I may end up taking Dave’s advice and staying out in the cold with my PS3 and Wii for a few years, and wait for the dust to settle/for the steambox…

    #76 2 years ago
  77. Samoan Spider

I keep thinking to myself that I’m going to stay out of it this time. That I won’t buy launch units of either brand until later in the cycle. Let things settle into a rhythm. But on the other hand over the next year we are going to see so many awesome games shown that I will end up being my own undoing. Ah well bring on tonight. Let’s see what its all about. I will piss myself though if its just about the eyepad!

    #88 2 years ago

This is going to be a youtube version because it requires only Adobe Flash player and “Ps Evolution” is from youtube.

In other news, this event = so far, so average.

    #220 2 years ago
  221. The Dude

Gaika on PS4 doesn’t sound too bad actually! Liking the sound of the spectating stuff and taking control of others’ games.

    #221 2 years ago
  222. TheBlackHole

Remote play… that requires a PS Vita.

Nice try Sony, but no thanks.

    #222 2 years ago
  223. TheBlackHole

    Lol – backward compatibility….

‘Sometime in the future, because we don’t have it yet.’

I just want to see what has come out newly that week. I just want to see whats new.

Not what Sony thinks I want to see. I just want to see everything.

  227. The Dude

    Randy Pitchford boooo!

    #227 2 years ago
  228. absolutezero

Thats just going to be an avalanche of shit.

Unleashed a never ending stream of 5 second long videos labelled “Test”. No one is going to watch videos, no one watches videos on Steam, and they very rarely look at screenshots.

Twitch works because it has the cult of personality behind it, you are also nearly always watching someone play as part of a group, communicating and reacting to the gameplay. Why would I just want to spy on one of my friends?

    #228 2 years ago
  229. dizzygear

Those guys seem doomed to make killzone games for the rest of their career.

    #239 2 years ago
  240. YoungZer0

Are you just here to be cynical?

    #240 2 years ago
  241. TheBlackHole

Well, Killzone looked like more of the same. Disappointed.

    #241 2 years ago
  242. theevilaires

im happy i can get to work on making that photoshop controller now :)

    #242 2 years ago
  243. Gheritt White

Is *no-one* here slightly disappointed the graphics aren’t much, much better? This is certainly *not* the jump from PS2 to PS3 all over again – it’s more like PS3.5.

Probs be at least three years before we get eye-shocking, brain-melting GFX from next-gen consoles.

    #243 2 years ago
  244. absolutezero

    Not at all.

I was looking forward to hearing some nice Helghast British accents but all I got were grunts and dull scripted events with animations worse than Battlefield 3. Same corridors, same walking segments.

Same pulling C4 out of your ass.

    #244 2 years ago
  245. Gnosis

They way that dude talks about getting into a virtual car is creepy.

    Awesome.

    #255 2 years ago
  256. CyberMarco

man, isn’t this a great show or what? :)

    #256 2 years ago
  257. Gheritt White

@ 253: That’s *exactly* what I’m saying. When I first saw Killzone and 8 Days, or Gears of War for that matter, I was floored. Could’t believe how good those GFX were compared to the then current gen – it was like GFX had skipped a gen and I was looking at something from 2010!

This, on the other hand, has left me pretty underwhelmed. Sure, devs will be able to squeeze it for extra juice over the coming years, but it’s not the Great Leap Forward I was hoping for.

I mean, the difference between Killzone: Shadow Fall and Killzone 3 is minor compared to God of War 2 and God of War 3.

This does not bode well for Microsoft fans, if the rumours about how underpowered their new system is by comparison are to be believed.

    #257 2 years ago
  258. Clupula

So, they’re going by the Evil Cole ending for Infamous 2. Interesting. I figured they’d do something like that.

    #258 2 years ago
  259. CyberMarco

^ Please restrain from unveiling any possible spoiler, haven’t played Infamous 2 yet.

    #259 2 years ago
  260. Clupula

The graphics are not blowing me away either, but they’re not exactly super HD from where I’m watching them. Maybe, in action, they’ll look better. So far, though, nothing is really making me think I need to upgrade from a PS3 for a while.

    #260 2 years ago
  261. Eddie Rodrigues

    No Vita games? Sad.

    #261 2 years ago

    #262 2 years ago

Holy shit this conference is unbelievable. Just announce a subscription and high entry price to ruin the boner Sony just do it already

    #263 2 years ago
  264. Gheritt White

    Hippo rape FTW.

    #264 2 years ago
  265. Clupula

@263 – Really? Did you actually think they’d waste time with that here?

    #265 2 years ago
  266. TheBlackHole

“Holy shit this conference is unbelievable.”

Are we watching the same conference?

    #266 2 years ago
  267. YoungZer0

Nothing gets me as emotionally invested as counting polygons.

    #267 2 years ago
  268. Gheritt White

Further to my previous comments, I think what can be achieve with polygon-based GFX will peak around the 2015. The next big jump in visual fidelity will need to come from real-time ray tracing (which is too processor intensive for the cloud, so even *that* might not happen).

    #268 2 years ago
  269. Clupula

Okay, that character model from Quantic Dream is the first thing that’s impressed me, graphically, tonight. Every realistic looking character in every game that has been shown tonight should have had that level of detail.

    #269 2 years ago
  270. TheBlackHole

    @269

    LMFAO

Character model is very nice, but by their own admission is something possible in the future.

    #270 2 years ago
  271. Clupula

@268 – I get the feeling you just came here to be snarky, really. I guess someone has to piss on everyone’s parade whenever other people are excited.

    #271 2 years ago
  272. absolutezero

I went for a smoke while Cage was waffling shite about emotion and cinema, have I missed anything?

    #272 2 years ago
  273. DSB

First they fire off that awesome intro, then they send in some unimpressive nerd who just starts to execubabble.

That’s when I stopped watching, figured I’d rather read it later :P

    #273 2 years ago
  274. Beta

Recorded version will be available on Scee Blog and later YouTube according to PS access :)

    #274 2 years ago
  275. TheBlackHole

A nice textured face of an old man, that the console will be capable of in the future… at some point.

    #275 2 years ago
  276. theevilaires

Wow lot of zealous XBOX lovers in here ;) Please dont make the same mistake you made in 2006. PS4 will continue SONY’s winning streak of the console wars. make no mistake

    I like Media Molecule.

    #279 2 years ago
  280. hitnrun

    Good Lord.

The meaty bits of the press conference are certainly exciting, but the bulk of this thing is like a Peter Molyneux press conference put together by Pixar.

    #280 2 years ago
  281. TheBlackHole

Ooooookay. That dancing with Move thing is pretty odd.

    Actually, I think it’s embarrassing.

Very telling that it’s got the biggest cheer of the night so far.

    #281 2 years ago
  282. absolutezero

Terrible and amazing. At the sametime.

    #282 2 years ago
  283. Gheritt White

@271. QFT, couldn’t agree more (…even though games would cost like $100M to create to make that a reality).

    #283 2 years ago
  284. TheBlackHole

Too much filler, not enough killer.

Why do I get the feeling all the games left to see will be sequels.

Please no more Unreal. I don’t think I can take another UE3.

    #286 2 years ago
  287. hitnrun

@Deep Down: This would be pretty awesome if I didn’t know the controls were being designed by Capcom.

    #287 2 years ago
  288. TheBlackHole

That had pre-rendered all over it. The animation was not gameplay. Looked great though.

    #288 2 years ago
  289. CyberMarco

please don’t move FF XIII versus on PS4…

    #289 2 years ago

    #291 2 years ago
  292. Clupula

    #292 2 years ago

SONY is showing their hands first then Microsoft will counter by April or May and then the final bout will be at E3 head on. SONY will show the real stuff at E3. This Square Enix demo is proof (really showing off old stuff) watch E3 they blow us away and Microsoft.

If this is next gen, Sony is in big trouble.

So basically every first party look like an Okay current gen PC games.

the only part that I liked was about a mystery demo from MM and Blizzard on stage where they announced that they are bringing Diablo III PC port to the PS4 and PS3. Diablo III is already a big dissapointment.

I want to see how it works, but so far…

    NOTHING Exciting so far. NOTHING. N O T H I N G.

They even showed a fucking demo from Luminous Engine or whatever Square Enix is doing… SECOND TIME FOR F SAKE. WHY? WHY???

    >rehashes
    >sculpt penises with your dildo controller
    >movies and multiplats that were already announced
    >ports

Man the Wii U is fucked is’nt it. lel.

    #366 2 years ago
  367. TheBlackHole

    @352 :) Me too.

All I really took from the event was that they were desperate to tell people that the console was easy to work for.

Most of the games will be multiplat, the graphics didn’t wow me, and I’m not convinced by this future promise of back compat.

Kinda wish I hadn’t stayed up for it.

Best gaming presentation that I’ve ever seen. Why? Because of the games, that’s why. Sure the first 10 mins sucked & I would have liked to see the actual console & some more details on how Gaikai will handle BC but those criticisms aside, the presentation was all about games, presented by game developers, for gamers- no gimmicks & thank God- no phoney celebrities.

    #370 2 years ago
  371. OlderGamer

“well that was kinda disappointing tbh

hardware looks awesome but no stand out exclusive games!”

Bingo. Nailed it entirely. I am guessing we will see the games at E3. And to be honest the hardware looks great from a console perspective. My PC is still better. But I can be happy with the hardware they are talking about.

But did you get the undertonne here? More then a few games a coming out for PS3 and PS4. Expect this current gen to live for a long time. The user base is huge. If next gen systems pull a Vita and WiiU, devs will keep throwing games at PS3 and xb360 for years.

LMAO love the xbox guys in here who didnt say a peep now shows up LMFAO. This ain’t E3 kiddos this a taste of whats to come. and PS3 has split memory of 512 and look at the amazing graphics like Last of Us, KZ3, and Uncharted. I think you need to crawl back in your holes trolls. E3 PS4 will show much more polished ready stuff.

Do yourselves a favor and don’t repeat history again like 2006-2008 to have you looking like a jack ass in the end again beaten by SONY exclusives.

    #392 2 years ago
  393. mathare92

I think it went well. They showed a few exclusives and some third-party stuff (though that Destiny bit was overblown), and they showed some interesting conceptual stuff.

All they really had to do was come out and say that there’s a new PlayStation coming out and we’ll show the good stuff at E3. They’ve clearly set aside E3 for most of the major reveals, like the console design itself.

I think it’s funny that after all the Kaz Hirai gifs, we didn’t even hear the guy’s name mentioned once. With him and Jack Tretton conducting the E3 reveal, it’s like they had to give something to Andrew House.

Basically, what it boils down to so far is that one might have fast CPU and RAM than the other by a little bit. They’ll be very similar so that devs don’t have to do too much work to get both up and running but one will edge the other out in framerate or extra little features.

This is how you know you’re dealing with children. You fools are actually talking about this stuff in a bad way as if its releasing next month or 3 to 4 years into the PS4 life cycle.

    Two Words………Naughty Dog

When they show off Uncharted 4 at E3 you’ll eat shit so i advise you to all shut your mouths now who are trying to down play this night. This wasn’t just about the games it was about showing the industry why a PS4 even exist.

like I said come E3 when Naughty Dog shows you what they can do with 8GB of ram when they can do miracles with split 512MB then talk shit.

    #410 2 years ago

  413. Beta

Tonight was only to confirm that the PS4 exists and to give a glimpse of the future of Playstation.

Since I’ve yet to actually see anything (thanks sky broadband) I can’t give an opinion but if Naughty Dog made the Uncharted series on PS3 I can’t even begin to imagine what they have in store next gen ;)

    #413 2 years ago
  414. rafterman83

    Don’t forget Driveclub, it’s has 3v3 racing :O

In all seriousness, too many holes in their presentation, far too many working titles and tech demos. It all reeks of the PS3s lofty ambitions and promises, which lets face it never really materialised. (2 x 1080p screens running off one console?)

The big question is can they deliver, or do the goal posts change and the console is watered down closer to the release.

Considering Sony’s bank balance I have my doubts that they’ll be able to deliver everything they’ve promised tonight.

At the moment it all seems a bit like a pipe dream, all be it a very nice one.

Personally I need some more flesh on the bone to be really excited, but if I was Microsoft I wouldn’t be massively worried.

New controller looks good, looks comfortable

    #415 2 years ago
  416. Digital Bamboo

Hardware sounds solid, & that 3D modelling thing looked interesting from a creative standpoint, but nothing blew me away game-wise. (Though it was hard to tell what they looked like graphically as I had more of a slideshow going after the intro.) Got a few mild surprises, but was hoping for more, bigger ones. Something new from Blizzard would have been nice.

I can’t believe those guys from SE flew all the way from Japan to show a video everyone (watching) has already seen, and say ‘a new Final Fantasy game’ will be announced. I guess nobody told them that the FF name no longer carries much weight in the West. But I hope whatever the new FF is, it gives fans reason to get excited about the series again.

Not bad overall, but could have been so much better. Nice intro, but some of those guys could use a course in public speaking, and should have brought more confidence and, in some cases, been better prepared, for this event (ideally with less talk, & more stunning new game footage).

    #416 2 years ago
  417. theevilaires

@415 exactly. These fools are going crazy as if this stuff is going gold next week. Seriously some of you guys are so pathetic.

Everyone said from the jump even Microsoft that next gen won’t be all about the visuals. Its about the tech. You see what they can do with a 8 year old Nvidia chip with split 512MB memory? Now they have 8GB of GDDR5….How dare you look down at SONY tonight in anyway negative? And no i don’t mean everyone I’m talking about a handful of trolls that have been commenting ever since the start of the press and that 1 that showed up after out of the blue.

    #417 2 years ago
  418. manamana

@416 wasn’t it just to let the cat out of the bag, so we can finally all talk next gen stuff? It was reveal and for that it was interesting. And interesting it will be what M$ has to conquer and at which point in time.

    #418 2 years ago
  419. Erthazus

Ram is cheap. It is the cheapest thing on that console. Lol.

    #419 2 years ago
  420. PAUL-

I have never owned a Sony console despite playing videogames for the last 25 years. The lead upto the press conference had me buzzing but for me it was a massive disappointment, I see nothing here that represents next gen in my eyes, the wow factor simply isn’t there. And they certainly had long enough to come up with more than they displayed tonight. I don’t think Microsoft has anything to worry about, but I am now concerned that their reveal of nex gen xbox will be disappointing too. Next gen is going to be a hard sell and I think people will want to cling onto their 360s and ps3s because the leap is not so obvious.

  425. Erthazus

@Dragon246, what GPU have to do with unified memory? They all have different tasks.

Gddr5 is just a speed and efficiency. PS4 devkits will probably have 16 GDDR5 or even more.

    #425 2 years ago
  426. killersense

i think people need to understand this is just a taste. there are still studios like naughty dog, ssm, ready at dawn and many more that haven’t shown their hands so people need to chill out. they are not going to blow their whole load before microsoft even announces. there is still probably ten months before the launch so they have to keep the big stuff closer to launch.

@erthazus don’t you think the specs are actually very good for a system aimed for mass market? didn’t you want 8gb memory all this time wehn you were complaining when the rumors were 4gb. they obviously can’t go bleeding edge technology and release it less than 500$ so this is really looking good

    #426 2 years ago
  427. CPC_RedDawn

How the hell can you guys be negative!?

I am a PC gamer through and through. Heck I was playing FC3 in windowed mode whilst watching the conference. And when ever they showed off actual gameplay I stopped and watched.

The console is a complete and utter sell to me, mainly because they finally ditched the stupid proprietary hardware and went with X86 CPU and a massive 8GB unified RAM. Which onbviously means that games can access and use this RAM how it chooses too (ie it can allocate 4GB to graphics and 4GB for the games engine, physics, etc).

This also means we finally get better ports on PC too as it uses the exact same architecture and as they said the PS4 had 2 Teradflops of graphical power. Where my current AMD HD7970 has 4.3 Teraflops so you can see the difference. Meaning our PC’s will destroy PS4 games!

Also, they actually brought games, AND NEW IP’s!! Which is a relief! Third party support looks great too. Heck they even got Blizzard on stage and brought Diablo 3 to the mix. They had barely any talk on Move, nothing on sales figures which was a bonus.

Nintendo probably are cacking their pants right now as that Vita streaming was awesome! And the ability to stream to literally ANY device is great too.

This was a great showing, and for me its a day one buy as they have already been spotted for preorder on sites for £399.99 and then £450 after preorders are filled.

Microsoft better bring it now with 720, and not focus on Kinect 2.0 etc. Which I have a feeling they will do.

The cynicism is getting overwhelming now. A new console was announced today for goodness sake. A new machine that plays games. The next-gen is finally afoot after eight long years (sorry Wii U). Isn’t anyone excited?

    #429 2 years ago
  430. Dragon246

    @Erth,
I think you know this well that one of the first things that gets cut to make cheaper gpu is the ram. Also gddr5 is costly and difficult to manufacture, biggest single modules are only 512 mb.
Read the DF specs analysis for info.

@431 – I’m with you 100% brother. I couldn’t care any less if it was Samsung or freaking LG releasing a next gen gaming console. The fact is after 7-8 long years here we are, and I’m about as excited as I could possibly get. What I saw this evening was amazing and I’m salivating for more.

As for the cynicism, yup, this website has become a far cry from the one I used to religiously attend.

    #431 2 years ago

@ 429 – Pretty much sums it up for me as well.

I think the Gaikai acquisition was money well spent.

    #432 2 years ago
  433. theevilaires

I think SONY took a shot at Microsoft tonight really hard. Not only do they have to match what SONY just announced but they still don’t know everything about the PS4 and they still have no direct answer to SONY’s awesome 1st party studios. The PS4 being more PC like than the other systems pretty much guarantees they will always have smooth easy to port games all around no matter where it was developed from.

And Gaikai sweetens the deal. the only thing I didn’t like was the controller which I hope is still a prototype because its FUGLY. I still can’t get over 8GB of GDDR5 when Uncharted 3 is running with 512MB of split memory.

square enix manager shows the tech demo we already saw, then the Final Fantasy brand director comes in, talks up ps4 then leaves almost forgetting to remind everyone a new something of that series will be shown at E3 – that’s got to be VERSUS, right. They wouldn’t hold out on it until TGS!
