PlayStation 4 to allow cross-play with other devices – rumour

Tuesday, 19th February 2013 01:20 GMT By Brenna Hillier

PlayStation 4 may allow for multiplayer with ‘smartphones and other devices”, a new report claims.

“Sony’s new console may also allow users to compete against others using different hardware, such as smartphones and other portable devices,” the Wall Street Journal claims in a new report, citing “people familiar with Sony’s plans”.

As the PlayStation 3 is already capable of cross-play with the Vita, it would seem to follow that the PS4 will expand on that capacity, perhaps to PlayStation Certified devices.

The publication made the claim among many other popular rumours, claiming independent sources for AMD hardware in both Orbis and Durango; an improved Kinect; 2013 release dates for both machines; a PS4 controller with touch features; and a heavy social emphasis for the PS4. It also reiterated its earlier report that the PlayStation 4 will stream PlayStation 3 games via Gaikai tech.

If the PLayStation 4 isn’t revealed at the February 20 PlayStation Meeting we’re all going to be a bit non-plussed.

Thanks, All Games Beta.

Yeah right. Now its sounding weird. I guess some wild guesses may come true and then the inevitable “We told you first” statement appears.

Umm btw is that the real PS4 controller up there or a dev kit prototype. I’ve been off and on with gaming news for the past couple days so I may have missed something that may have got pre officially announced.

This sounds in line with Sony’s plans. Having all their content across multiple devices. Music, Movies and Games. What will they think of next?

And when are they going to bring the PlayStation App to the US?

Sounds interesting. I for one have thought Sony could’ve beefed up social aspects of Playstation this generation. Hope they show some of it come wednesday.

@4 I know right seriously I need a PlayStation app on my phone so I can message my friends and check trophies on it. I also think Gaikai is going to be a huge part/back bone of SONY’s plans for gaming next gen and beyond

That pic of the controller looks a lot better than the other ones – is it the same design though or just better pic?

Playing across systems sounds cool, particularly with the “cross-gen” sort of games coming out (Star Wars 1313? Destiny?)

This could potentially be HUGE. Seriously, game changing huge. Imagine playing Killzone 2 multiplayer with a tablet user, a smartphone user and a couple of PS3 users. Sure, the console players will have an advantage but still.
The input lag from cloud games will only bother hardcore who will probably get the console if it is priced right. The rest (Mainstream) will be happy to get some sort of premium PS4/3 app to stream and enjoy games on the go.

@3 That’s a prototype controller made by a NeoGAF user, the “official” prototype is in previous news.
