    First, a prove than Japan can still make the best action games.
    Second, that you can still be original in Hack’N'Slashes games.
    Third, that spin offs and reboots can be flawlessly executed.
    Fourth, that you don’t need to massacre a series’ canon to make a game.
    Fifth, that you can still make awesome looking games running at 60fps.

    I’ll reserve final judgment until I’ve actually got the game in my hands. After all, DmC was praised almost universally by critics, and that turned out to be… Well, I’ve said all I need to say about that game really! I do have high hopes for Revengeance though.

    Few remember how this game has been bashed by MetalGearSolid fans, so we’re not in a different situation than DMC, still, if this game sells more than DmC I will have multiple orgasms.

    @9 – It was bashed until things got cleared up. For one, the fact that the game is canon, with KojiPro writing the story, and not some alternate universe bullshit certainly made a lot of people get more positive about it. That and I also think the demo did a lot of the work. It is a good demo. It makes you want to play more of the game and you can see the care and work that went into it.

    @9 : true there has been a lot of fears and complaints from fans about MGRR… but there is a huge difference as they took an alternate route, some sort of spin off, without drastically changing/modifying the source material.

    In the end, it all comes to this: is the game fun and enjoyable? I enjoyed the first DMCs (not a hardcore fan but liked them) and tried the new one. Didn’t like what they did with the ambiance, storyline, etc. and the gameplay felt solid, but not really interesting (to me).

    Now for MGS, I really loved the games (even though I never liked the gameplay for the series until MGS3 and even then, there are a lot of room for improvements). When I saw MGRR, it seemed like some sort of spin off, not too serious, quite light-hearted and above all, it played on something all of us wanted to do since MGS 1: play as a ninja cyborg and cut almost anything.
    Just like the new DmC, I said, okay, lets give it a try, and I really enjoyed it (demo really sold me the game).

    I think the two games are quite comparable in terms of the different approaches that can be taken on an existing franchise (and to me, MGRR is a bit like Luigi’s Mansion regarding the Mario franchise: really different while keeping a good connection to its roots)

    3 people that bashed DmC (me, Erthazus and Clupula) happy for this game.
    Why? Because the game is ACTUALLY solid, no pun intended, and just the demo alone prove it.
    People will enjoy an effeminated Ninja with slight long white hair, with high heels and a katana, even if people would laugh at him in pubs.

    DmC haters need to realise that the new game is simply better than anything put out by the original DmC team, they are just too stubborn and whiny to admit it.

    DmC 4 was basically them running out of ideas and basically HD-ing the old games, DmC needed a dreastic change such as the new one and it’s better for it.

    Just look at the PC version, it looks astonishing. One of the best looking games i have ever seen.

    Oh and it plays well too.

    @15 – it only got a marginally better score and i would bet all the money i have it only got a slightly lower score because it wasn’t made by a Japanese company, if someone out of Japan would have made the new DmC everyone would praise it all to hell and it would have the same scores as this.

    I bet when MGR comes out it scores around the same as DmC.

    Because of DmC i am now more interested in MGR.

    @17 DMC4 running out of ideas? They ran out of *time*, yes, but ideas? No. And for all its flaws I’d argue DMC4 to be the best in the series so far. Not in terms of story – that goes to 3 – but it was still good enough to keep me entertained. It still looks gorgeous today, and the gameplay… ahhh, the gameplay. Definitely the best, and FAR superior to its DmC counterpart. Apart from completely changing the look and story of Devil May Cry, DmC brings NOTHING new to the series in terms of gameplay. It tries to build on the Devil Bringer of 4 in terms of the whips, but honestly the mechanics take a step backward to somewhere between DMC 2 & 3. How is that progress? Where is the innovation when you dumb something like the combat of Devil May Cry down?

    Metal Gear Rising feels newer and fresher than DmC could ever hope to be, characters & art styles aside. So far, anyway. I’ve played DmC till the cows come home – I’m pretty sure I know what I’m talking about when it comes to that game. I’ve only played the demo of MGR, but already I can tell there is FAR more depth to this game, even with its flaws (too big a window when parrying, forced Gears of War style moments walking along, chatting on your codec). It’s a demo though, and those things may be better in the final release. We’ll see in 2 weeks.

    Also, Raiden is just such a FREAKIN’ BADASS.

    The more you play DmC the more it gets boring, that’s where DmC fails big time.
    While DevilMayCry games grew on you when you learn and fiddle with combos, in DmC you can’t make up cool innovative combos even because colour coded enemies and enemies with a single weak spot, force you to use a certain weapon or strategy.

    I played MGR demo 3 times.
    First time I messed every ZanDatsu and died at the first Gekko and was a bit perplexed.
    Second time I spent more time in the VR section and play through all the demo with ease but in a very basic way and was pleased.
    Third time I played with confidence and skills, parrying, dodging, executing ZanDatsus at the right time, slicing everything and had a hell of a good time.
    The game grows at each plays while you get skilled and proficient at it.

    DmC gets worse and more boring at every playthrough because you learn how to use your attacks in an efficient way, it’s not about skills but about exploiting.
    And that sucks.

    @25 While I respect your opinion and tastes, I do think people who haven’t played DmC have a right to complain, since it (thus far) has replaced the lore and canon of the original series which was left in an unfinished state. Whether you find the old games to be good or not is irrelevant to them, myself included, because a great many people were invested in the characters and story of old and are, I think, rightfully disappointed in the sudden casting off of what they enjoyed about the series.

    Without even playing the game, I knew that I didn’t like this new world of DmC when I compared it to Devil May Cry. I don’t think a play-through is necessary to know if you like it or not. You didn’t, did you? You thought it looked awesome from the beginning, which is fine, but surely it’s understandable for this game to be rejected by many because it’s removal from the original series?

    I’ve lurked this site enough to know you enjoy Spec-Ops: The Line. Imagine it was announced they wanted to keep “The Line” going, in a series of games. But rather than continuing with an anti-war theme in different scenarios and stories, they rebooted the franchise to appeal to a more Gears of War audience – it’s action-packed, tight gameplay, excitement all round… but the original feel of Spec-Ops: The Line, the message you got from playing that game is lost. New people to the franchise are hyping up the action and think it’s the dog’s bollocks, a genuinely fun game to play with great controls. But for you, the whole thing will suck!

    Perhaps that’s not the best analogy, but I think it’s along the lines of what I’m trying to say anyway. To a lot of people, DmC is not Devil May Cry, and I can totally relate. The way it plays just seals the deal for me.

    Revengeance gets it right in being a spin-off game.

    Even without the parrying i was able to defeat the first boss without any trouble. I thought Platinum games were known for the difficulty?

    Nope. I’m not letting you go that easily. You either have played it and understand the world and how it works, or you don’t. Especially at later stages DmC does a few nice things with Limbo and the gameplay.

    I predicted this game would be a critical hit weeks ago. (Check Dave’s review of DmC for my original comments if you wish). Mark my words, Metal Gear Rising will be the innovation the action/combat genre has been lacking. Platinum Games will show everyone the true definition and vision of visceral combat. Most other “hack & slash” games will be a distant memory once this releases. Truth.

Unless you played on easy, there’s no way you beat the boss without using parry, because it has two fucking homing attacks that you can’t dodge. You can ONLY parry them. So, you’re either just talking out of your ass. Or you played on easy, where the demo is a bit more forgiving than on normal.

    I like how talking about Metal Gear Rising became talking about DmC. That’s apparently just how controversially terrible DmC is; it hijacks discussion of great, promising games like Rising.

    Of course there were complaints about Rising. There will always been complaints about any game. But there are three differences. One, those fans that were complaining THAT much are in the minority. Two, the fact that Kojima was stepping back to allow new and unproven employees take the reins caused alarm bells, ESPECIALLY when a couple interviews in the beginning implied the original team lacking some respect for the source material; Platinum Games has proven themselves AND shown respect. And three, Rising is a canonical spinoff title that respects the source material.

    DmC, by contrast, was an attempt to make the real DMC series and characters essentially non-existent except as a distant memory from a bygone era, while changing all of it into something completely inappropriate out of a gross misunderstanding of and disrespect for the source material.

    @39 – Easy just seemed to give a bigger window. It was a lot more forgiving. You can start a parry a second or two looser, I guess would be the word. I just tried Easy once. I was able to pretty much just bum rush the boss on Easy to the point where he called out his three soldiers after like 30 seconds of me just slashing him.

    There was a big jump when I played Normal, which is what I’ve been practicing on.

    While I wouldn’t say that DMC’s story has ever been top-notch, that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable to me – especially the characters that inhabit that story. I also happen to get a kick out of hearing the voice acting of Reuben Langdon and Johnny Yong-Bosch :)

    Of course, this is all a matter of opinion, and I don’t think we’ll simply change our minds over what we enjoy or dislike. I thought the story and characters of DmC were weak, especially since it was said that Ninja Theory were bringing a *real* story to the table with this, make it “better”. They were going for the solid story rather than aiming to try and top Bayonetta’s gameplay (a mistake in my opinion). But I didn’t get that AT ALL. Sure I could see an *effort* to tell a richer story… but that’s all I got a sense of – effort with a poor result, which to me makes it fall flat on its face. I didn’t like it. I’d rather know more about Nero.

    “Nope. I’m not letting you go that easily. You either have played it and understand the world and how it works, or you don’t. Especially at later stages DmC does a few nice things with Limbo and the gameplay.”

    Of course I can know if I like it or not! Especially since I have something to compare it to. The two different worlds, they’re too different from each other to not be able to have an opinion, you could see it from the beginning. The game itself is not so different from the trailer, promotional material, demo.. that you’d play it and suddenly think completely differently. Okay, well.. you might. People are different afterall. All I can say is I didn’t change my mind, and playing the game fully basically just confirmed what I saw in the first place. I did try to like it, though, I played through all the difficulties except Hell and Hell and unlocked everything. By then I was like… “Man, I’ve had enough of this now”. I played DMC3 and 4 afterward to compare, and felt a (positive) world of difference. It filled my dark soul with light :)

    Of course, true. Like I said just now, I replayed 3 and 4. But it’s also true, I think, that sequels can drag a series down. DMC2 dragged Devil Cry down, even with 3′s success.. there’s still that stain of 2 that everyone likes to forget. The Matrix was a great film, but you can’t think of that without thinking of “The Trilogy”… ugh. Those other two..
    Not to mention the fact that you’d LOVE for the creators of Spec-Ops to be spending their time on a “proper” brand-new spec-ops game, despite the fact that the old one’s still there… slowly being forgotten, showing its age graphically or whatever. I know I would anyway. With DMC, a kicker for me though is I was really hoping Dante would be the main character again, whilst getting to know more about Nero and his connections to Vergil.

    Actually, speaking of the Rising demo – did anyone get a weird bug with the guards not noticing you? I was underneath a platform with a guard, so i cut down the pillars and collapsed everything expecting the guy to fall to his death, or at least lose health… but he just dropped, standing perfectly and then continued to patrol RIGHT IN MY FACE.

    I do know that in the full game, not only will enemies be able to parry your attacks, as well, but parry your parries, which you will then have to parry back. That sounds awesome.

    I generally think the story and the characters are much better. The reason why Vergil and Dante didn’t get along was also much better. Yeah, the ending felt a little bit weak, but it wouldn’t be DMC without a fight between the two.

    Dunno about Bayonetta. I have a PS3 and heard bad, bad things about the PS3 Version. So I have not played it and have no opinion on it.

    I don’t think it’s bad that they tried to tell a better story, since that – in my opinion – is what the series was always lacking. An interesting story, relatable and likable characters. I mean the female characters in DMC4 had no depth whatsoever. Just another damsel in distress, we have to save because … she’s Nero’s girlfriend. But she’s not mine and I don’t know anything about her, so why should I care again? Even Princess Peach had more depth.

    And I thought DMC Fans hated Nero?

    Yes, for starters we don’t know jackshit about the world in previous DMC’s. Is the existence of Demons a known fact? Where is the government? Do they have a military? Why do some humans seem to possess more strength than others?

    I don’t understand how anyone can say they are missing the old world when we knew nothing about it.

    At the end of DmC you could see it being shaped back. With Limbo fusing with the real world. We saw military choppers in the background, people running away from demons. All that stuff. Dante could open his Demon Hunter business now.

    I disagree. You can do what most DMC fans do: Ignore DMC2 ever happened. I do the same with Matrix. Bought the first one, ignored the rest.

    No, I actually I do not. I want to see what other games they can produce. I’m not really interested in a sequel.

    Yeah, I kind of agree with you there. Wouldn’t say quite say “unbearable”, but.. I know what you’re saying. :)

    Gonna suppress my DmC related thoughts because I don’t want to derail this thread or anything, but you got some good points and I have some responses… I’ll save it for another time though ;)

    I hope it’s just an isolated issue in the demo. Haven’t had a chance to try it again.

    Anyway, I do hoping cutting stuff becomes more useful in the final product. I remember being chased by a Gekko and cutting pillars in front of me, so stuff would fall down on him. That never happened. Either they were too slow or not close enough.

    @52 – Being the Devil May Cry anime is canon, it is established that the rest of the world does appear to know about demons, in that they exist, but nobody really sees them as a huge threat unless they encounter them firsthand. There’s a jealous boyfriend who stalks Dante for an episode, thinking that he’s maybe involved in organized crime and then eventually starts thinking Dante is full demon, for example.

    Despite this, Dante is usually hurting for money and constantly borrowing it from Lady to keep the shop open. Any money he does make at his demon hunting business usually just goes towards paying his debts to her. It also appears that Lady still operates as a demon hunter, but not under the Devil May Cry banner, but as an independent contractor, who occasionally works with Dante, but still demands his cut as well as hers.

    @57: I watched the whole anime, Vergil was not in it. It was a strange twist on things, Dante seeming to be obsessed with STRAIRUBARRY SUNDAYs (I watched the Japanese version with subs) and the little girl Patty garnering a lot of emphasis. I’m guessing because of assumptions of what the anime crowd would watch. There was also the episode where Lady and Trish competed with each other and ended the episode as pretty close to pals, but that kind of female rivalry turning into friendship is also expected in animes.

    I’ll never understand why so many animes based on videogames go wrong. Don’t they watch the source material? What’s the point of adapting something if you’re turning it into something else?

    I had the same problems with the Persona Anime. It’s as if they never played 3 and 4.

    As someone who was really critical of those first few trailers, I’m glad to read (and see) how wrong I was. It even appears that they’ve infused enough of that usual Metal Gear charm into the narrative, which is a great credit to Platinum.

    Don’t know why I ever doubted the nutters. The studio was basically made to turn those Raiden cutscenes from MGS4 into a real game.

    ^ Assuming Dave isnt some super awesome hardcore combo meister (with 21 deaths he isnt), and being generous and saying that it has round an hour of cut scenes (which i really doubt but lets just say thats the case)… About 6 hours long give or take, a bit less. Unless you get stuck and keep dying on a part. Of course that hardly counts, if it did every game would have a dubious length. Though i’m sure Acti would love to say CoD4 was crazy long all thanks to Mile High Club.
