Destiny coming to PS3, X360, “future gen”; no PC yet

Destiny is on its way to current-gen HD consoles for sure and very probably next-gen hardware, too – but the PC misses out for now, with Bungie claiming that “nobody” uses a keyboard and mouse any more.

The “MMO-ish” shooter is headed to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and mysterious “future generation technology”, which almost certainly means one or both upcoming consoles from Microsoft and Sony. This information runs counter to a contract released last year, which had the first Destiny down as an Xbox exclusive, but has been widely confirmed.

IGN reports there will be no cross-platform play between PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360; no word on next-gen consoles, of course.

No PC release has been touted and Bungie and Activision describe Destiny as a “console shooter”. Bungie’s Jason Jones told Destructoid that the developer has already made mouse and keyboard players obsolete.

“We did a bunch of ambitious things on Halo deliberately to reach out to people. We limited players to two weapons, we gave them recharging health, we automatically saved and restored the game – almost heretical things to first-person shooters at the time,” he said.

“We made the game run without a mouse and keyboard. And now nobody plays shooters the way they used to play them before Halo ’cause nobody wants to.”

That said, Bungie COO Pete Persons told the Examiner that a PC version may be forthcoming.

“We would absolutely love to be on the PC. If you talk to the people upstairs, we play it on all platforms. So, stay tuned,” he said. Activision boss Eric Hirshberg said the publisher wants Destiny to be “wherever gamers are”.

Activision is describing Destiny as a new kind of game, a “shared world shooter”. GamesIndustry reports Destiny features persistent worlds and sandbox elements. Other reports mention procedurally generated missions as well as ongoing crafted content.

Although it won’t require a subscription fee and supports solo play, it has MMO features and requires an always-on Internet connection. The science fiction plot takes characters to various solar system locations, including Mars and the moon, and there’s a social hub in a city on Earth.

There will be at least three classes – the long-range Hunter, the mage-like Warlock, and something called a Titan. There will be no matchmaking or UI.

Bungie released an official description of Destiny on its forum:

Everything changed with the arrival of the Traveler. It sparked a Golden Age when our civilization spanned our solar system, but it didn’t last. Something hit us, knocked us down. The survivors built a city beneath the Traveler, and have begun to explore our old worlds, only to find them filled with deadly foes.

You are a Guardian of the last safe city on Earth, able to wield incredible power. Defend the City. Defeat our enemies. Reclaim all that we have lost.

    Key features:

  • The next evolution of entertainment – an incredible story set within a newly-imagined, always-connected universe filled with action and adventure.
  • Create your character, forge your legend by defeating powerful foes, and earn unique and customized weapons, gear and vehicles.
  • Unprecedented variety of FPS gameplay that redefines the genre breaks traditional conventions of story, cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes, combined with public and social activities.

Journalists who attended an embargoed reveal event at Bungie were not shown any gameplay. More concrete details of how the game actually plays are expected at upcoming reveals, but for now your best look at the game is the reveal vidoc.

A release window has not been set, and although Bungie had previously confirmed a 2013 launch, Activision’s recent financials noted no Bungie release was expected in the appropriate quarters.

“And now nobody plays shooters the way they used to play them before Halo ’cause nobody wants to.”

Makes you sound like you haven’t got a fucking clue actually. Overarching statements are doomed to inaccuracy, or in this case, complete fucking bollocks.

In before the inevitable shitstorm over:
“We made the game run without a mouse and keyboard. And now nobody plays shooters the way they used to play them before Halo cause nobody wants to”.

That’s a hell of a mass generalisation there Bungie…

Most Retarded Statement This Year So Far.
I’m not mad about it at all, arguing with the Bungie does not make sense.

After cheapening the FPS genre with their bullshit game, Bungie thinks that playing shooters with keyboard and mouse is obsolete.

YOU are obsolete, Bungie.

oohh.. the pc-elitist are getting butt hurt. it just ain’t happening on the pc anymore, it is a fact. there are a few old farts hugging their mouse and keyboards but they are in the minority. big game developers cant be bothered anymore with the pc. because it is a piracy heaven and very little money to earn. when nextgen consoles arrive there will be very few games released for the pc. all the focus will be on the new consoles where these developers will earn their money. bungie is just the first developers to be honest about and tell it how it is…

@8 – The problem is, they are NOT honest. I’d be OK with honest. Honest thing to say here is “We will sell more copies on consoles than on PC, so we don’t care about PC gamers”. But saying that no one play shooters with mouse & keyboard is just silly :P

Activision is behind Bungie now so… Yeah. Good luck. Save moneyz for you Bungie Elite Season Pass XXL HyperSpace version with 20% off all DLC!

If developers and publishers just wanted to do something more on PC, they would sell more copies. Look at Skyrim. They allowed mods. Mods. That’s all it takes. Allow PC games to mod your game and it will sell more copies that it would sell otherwise. Oh… But wait. If players will have mods, they are less likely to buy your shitloads of DLC, so you can’t allow that.

“We would absolutely love to be on the PC,” [Pete] Parsons [Bungie COO] said. “If you talk to the people upstairs, we play it on all platforms. So, stay tuned.”

“Until there are official announcements from the first parties obviously we can’t comment on any platforms that might be forthcoming, but what we can say is we are building ‘Destiny’ to be wherever gamers are,” said Activision boss Eric Hirshberg added.

A PC version was also mentioned in the [unsealed Activision/West-Zampella court] documents, but was not formally announced Sunday.

@12 mods are free dlc that the developer doesn’t have to make.
Good mods mean more sales.

Bungie did do a lot of amazing things on consoles, but they never did figure out how to make a thumbstick as fast and precise as a mouse.

Until they do, I don’t think that scene is going anywhere. It’s lovely to ride in a horse and carriage, but people still pay more to drive a Ferrari.

What a completely retarded statement. Just like “we want to reach a massive audience” ( except the PC community). No wonder hes avoided media interviews for ten years. Who knowsbut its a massive mistake if correct. but what would we know we use that forgotten technology the mouse and keyboard.

I think what bungie is trying to say is that on the computer, you have to be in front of your computer most likely in a single chair with no one around. On a console, you are usually on a couch with other people able to watch to play. I’m not saying one is mutually exclusive to one or the other, just the generalization. The “controller” is easy to hold and is definitely more simple to use than a keyboard.

As for consoles making shooters into a bastardized version of their former glory…. well no shit. I loved it when I could pick between 10-15 weapons whenever I wanted during a level of a game. But NOPE… since consoles… it makes it a strict 2 guns at any time. That was my only beef with consoles.

Other than that, console shooters are okay in my book. PC games have their amazing titles just how consoles will have theirs. Witcher 2 on PC >>>>>> Witcher 2 on Xbox. Simple fact.

Plus Cyberpunk 2077 will be on PC… and Deus Ex: HR is amazing on PC vs. consoles.

Just some bullshit boasting meant to get a rise out of people, and it seems to be working.
No different than Eminem saying “no one listens to techno”

As someone who has switched back and forth between PC and consoles over the years, I can say I’ve enjoyed playing shooters on both, but it’s no secret that a mouse & keyboard are a lot faster and more precise than a controller. Though I don’t currently have a gaming PC, given the choice to play the latest FPS on either PC or console I would take the high-end PC version, no contest, based on control alone (though the frame rate & graphics would likely be significantly better as well).

Anyhow, dumb developer comment aside, the artwork looks great. I hope it turns out well, on all systems.

Given steams big picture mode I’m assuming they felt the direction of PC gaming was away from the “sat in the corner” type to “sat on the sofa” and by extension using a gamepad. The best way to play a shooter is with a kb/mouse but a gamepad is perfectly acceptable. This is hyperbole and should be judged as such. But in a few weeks I reckon a PC version will be quietly slipped into pre order.

What the actual fuck?? Nobody plays with keyboard and mouse anymore??! I feel like handicapped when I’m playing with controller! What the fuck they talking about?! I didn’t expect such pure retardism from Bungie. I’ve lost all interest in this game and alot of respect to Bungie, even though I’m sure fuckers will port it to PC in the end anyway. It doesn’t even makes any sense to not port an always online game to PC. We won’t even be able to pirate it. Idiots.

Lets put this in perspective Bungie has been a console developer from the get go(ignoring the Apple days) every one of their games that came out on the PC was ported by a separate studio. They are playing to their market.

If there is a PC version it will be released a determined amount of time after the console version has come out assuming there is even a PC version. Stop getting so butt hurt.

Point of reference btw, Bungie were not meant to be a console developer as Halo was about to be a PC franchise that got swiped by Microsoft (by purchasing Bungie) to assist the original xbox at launch.
