  • Hayter’s gonna hate: the voice of Solid Snake wouldn’t answer my Metal Gear question

Voice actor and Hollywood writer David Hayter discusses the differences between movies and games. • Pokemon Shuffle downloaded 1m times, free stuff given out to celebrate

Free-to-play 3DS title Pokemon Shuffle has been downloaded over 1 million times. As a reward for playing the match-3 puzzle game Nintendo has gifted players a Complexity -1 item for free. The item reduces the difficulty of a level, according to Eurogamer. By all accounts Pokemon Shuffle is a cynical game with poorly implemented microtransactions. […]

  • GTA 5: that’s some seriously accurate grenade throwing

Think you can take down a jet plane with a grenade throw? This guy can. In fact, he can do it twice. This is in a variation on the player-created deathmatch “Stunters Versus Snipers” which seem to be all the rage in GTA Online at the moment. One team has a sniper rifle (and grenades) […]

  • Dragon Age: Inquisition mod enables male Blackwall romance, terrific joke

A new Dragon Age: Inquisition mod removes Blackwall’s romantic restrictions, allowing male Inquisitors to chat up the fuzzy-faced warrior. Blackwall doesn’t have any race preferences, so you’re good to go there. Dragon Age: Inquisition romance mods are pretty common by now, and to be […]

  • Bungie “always” looking at Exotic changes for Destiny updates

Destiny developer Bungie won’t stop tinkering with Exotic weapons. In Destiny, Exotic weapons are supposed to be the best of the best – and to feel unique. • Is Uncharted 4′s first trailer a tribute to Crash Bandicoot?

Uncharted 4′s first proper trailer bears some remarkable similarities to the opening moments of a much earlier Naughty Dog game. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End has more in common with Crash Bandicoot than you might think. It’s Naughty Dog’s first game on a new console, yes – but if you compare Uncharted 4′s E3 2014 […]

  • Stealth Inc. 2 coming to PSN, apparently

  • Destiny PvP rewards system to be addressed

Destiny developer Bungie has said it will change the way Crucible rewards work. • Dragon’s Dogma Online really is lovely, as these screenshots prove

More Dragon’s Dogma Online screenshots have been released, and this batch is just as lovely as the last gallery we posted. Games TM – 4/10
    PS3gen.fr – 5/10
    ITNewsAfrica – 7.9

Expected. In my opinion Gearbox software didn’t made something decent this gen. Even Borderlands is mediocre, but the only reason it sold so well and was very well recieved is because it had loot and nice art-style in FPS.

In the end Aliens is the same failure as Duke Nukem forever.

Gearbox should really solve their problems as soon as possible. After the fiasco that was Duke Nukem Forever, and the same path this one seems to follow, I don’t know how many lives they have left.

I saw a poster for this at Gamestop, where if you pre-order, you get multiplayer skins for Hudson (makes sense), Hicks (makes even more sense), Drake (I think if you mentioned him to most people, they wouldn’t even know who he was until you mentioned he had a giant gun), and Apone. Who the fuck even knew what Apone’s name was in the movie. He was the fucking drill sergeant who dies super early on. Also couldn’t help but notice no Vasquez skin. I guess they’re afraid it’ll scare off the dudebros if they get a female character’s skin.

@17 Anyone who knows ALIENS knows this characters and everyone else in it too, stuff of legends each and every one, even that c*nt Burke!!

    #18 2 years ago
  19. orakaa

@18: the TOTALLY should have created a multiplayer mode called “kill Burke”. Now THAT would have been awesome.

So disappointed that the game is not looking very good. I REALLY wanted a good Alien game :/
Might as well try “Alien vs Predator” (didn’t buy it back then but now it can be found for like 10 euros)

@17: Don’t know Apone…If they watched the film enough, I doubt that applies to a lot of people. He’s a bold presence in the opening act.

I just plain rolled my eyes when I saw a damn season pass materialise on the digital stores for this, last week! What a joke. It knocked my interest to see that being applied.
There seems to be just this accumulation of cynical practice from SEGA, or their marketing team, or whoever’s leading the ship when it comes to positioning this game.

No Vasquez: when you’re talking about memorable characters of that film, it’s strange not to include her. Was there no way, or did they have some marketing gooseberry consult a think tank, or quote spreadsheet to determine that the idea was not any importance. I don’t know! But, I am surprised with these scores. :( I expected, anticipated CM to become a much-cited example of a quality game, that overcame clammy publisher influence to show how a good game will win through – one of the shining last moments of the current generation…That this may not happen is unfortunate.

  21. SplatteredHouse

@19: If you can, get AVP on Steam (IF you mean the original – I momentarily forgot the more recent version) as it’s, to read the description, almost like a remastered version containing all of the original with controller support and other modern conveniences: http://store.steampowered.com/app/3730/

    #21 2 years ago
  22. Clupula

Well, Burke was the villain so everyone knows him.

But I just find it so odd to not include Vasquez but to include Apone. Vasquez is one of the main characters. Not equal to Hick, Newt, or Ripley, but definitely up there with Hudson, arguably Bishop. Hell, I’d actually find it make more sense to include Gormon over Apone, because even if Gormon did freak out during the film, he did live longer than Apone did.

    #22 2 years ago
  23. LuLshuck

@17 No idea how offensive that post was, howthe fuck do you not know Apone!!! anyways i couldnt give a fuck about the reviews, game looks class, season pass thing is shit though

“In space no one can hear me scream
Because I have no F*ckin .exe file.”…Australian would-be players of the Collector’s Edition take to the Gearbox forums as they found themselves impeded from playing their new game: http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=243779&page=4 (Gearbox say they’re working on a fix – “The executable should become available once the game is unlocked in your region.”) THE GAME WAS RELEASED UNFIT FOR PURPOSE. To be honest i’ve played this over the weekend and i give it a 7.5.

Not worth £45 day one buy though. Story has some decent set pieces in it and the visuals match the film pretty well as do the sound effects.

Well, I plan to get the game no matter what. I am a huge Aliens fan and sure the game isn’t as bad as the reviews will make it seem. A lot of times reviewers are looking for moments that blow them away or new and fresh gameplay. While that is very desirable, not every game can deliver that. I just want a pulse rifle and Aliens to splatter. Binary Domain wasn’t anything fresh, but I had a really good time playing it. I believe it averaged around a 74%. Another example is Defender for the original Xbox. It got horrid reviews, but for some reason I loved it. I plan to buy it at lunch and play it when I get home. Hopefully, I won’t be in some real fruity shit.

I am not surprised if it gets a bad review from a lot of critics.

  42. Henry

The game came out earlier in my place because of the Chinese New Year holiday. I am at the last 2 stages now.

    Cons:
Graphics is outdated, alien’s body movement is a bit awkward, some stages has human enemies only (I bought this game for bug hunt, why human enemies?)

    Pros:
Many fans service. Many reference to the movie. Sound effect, motion detectors, all give you the movie’s atmosphere. Has in-game small achievements (challenges) for you to go after, fulfilling them will raise ranks and let you upgrade weapons.

I recommend it to Alien movie fans. But not for average FPS gamers. Coop may be fun. I don’t know. Haven’t tried.

@55 I’ve played it to completion.

It’s a better game than AVP 2010, but the technical issues make it suffer worse. Technically it’s worse yes, but as a game it’s better and more faithful to the canon. That’s not saying much.

It’s still rubbish. I’m not defending it.

    @58 It’s a travesty.

AvP is worse in terms of game design, handling, plot and rote aesthetics.

A:CM is better in staying true to the source, the gameplay is miles better and the aliens act and behave more authentically.

However, A:CM is ultimately worse due to its technical issues and lack of polish.

In terms of barebones control and aesthetic A:CM wins over AvP, but overall A:CM loses out.

Hope this helps explain better :)

“Technically it’s worse yes, but as a game it’s better and more faithful to the canon. That’s not saying much.”

“A:CM is better in staying true to the source, the gameplay is miles better and the aliens act and behave more authentically.”

Canon. Canon, canon, canon. Faithful to the source…….

Exactly what everyone was blabbing about a few months back, the only thing that they could sell knowing how awful this would be –
    http://www.vg247.com/2012/12/11/aliens-colonial-marines-assholes-and-elbows/

Watched a YT playthrough over the weekend, and the so-called story is as detrimental to the experience as the bugs and glitches throughout. Laughable in places, clichéd and corny at best, and very little explanation for those “wtf ?” questions.

As for the authentic movement – http://i.minus.com/i212wUcwcU0eE.gif

    Say no more.

At least Rebellion’s AvP is equally awful, but with the benefit of the two other campaigns, and is available for pennies now. A:CM will need a week or two to become that cheap.

The game wont start. No executable file. I hear it is a wide spread thing in Australia and New Zealand, but I’m from the U.K and this is just ridiculous for a new game. Seeing as it didn’t even start I gotta rate it as N/A as a game. Also the ratings it’s getting….geesss. Don’t buy it.

Authentic? Canon? Don’t make me laugh.

Giant ‘bull’ Aliens and other new Alien types..

The Nuked facility is mysteriously radiation- and damage-free?

The only Canon this game comes close to is the one it should be fired from… into the sun.

    #72 2 years ago
  73. Dave Cook

@72 It’s more authentic to the canon than AvP. Massively.

I know because I’ve finished it.

  74. Erthazus

It’s Gearbox. I said since the game’s trailer was released that this will be a shitty game.

It’s the same trainwreck as Duke Nukem Forever but worse because it is a new game based on the “franchise”.

Call Of Duty developers after this deserve Oscar and you can call their shitty corridor shooter GOOD compared to this one.

But my problem is that because of Gearbox, SEGA suffered. I like SEGA a lot. : (

    #73

‘More authentic than AvP’ is more authentic than something completely un-authentic! Deputy Dawg is about as authentic as AvP.

A:CM claims authenticity yet spits acid in the face of the events of the film it supposedly follows.

Besides, anything to come from Paul W.S. Anderson or related to his ‘works’ is to be purged from memory. The man is a walking insult to the world’s collective intelligence.

    @73

As did I, as stated, by watching a full playthrough. Thankfully we live in an age where you can rely on review copies, and we can watch YT/streams, and neither one of us has to waste money, eh ?

    Piss poor argument, as is:

“It’s more authentic to the canon than AvP. Massively.”

Errr, who disputed that ? I stated that the sorry plot of A:CM shouldn’t be considered canon on the whim of a few hack writers and FOX execs. Merely suggested a cheaper, safer option, and AvP didn’t try to arse up 20 years of history.

But then, you’ve been hyping this for ages, and it’s difficult to defend an indefensible position.

    @74

But it wasn’t Gearbox. ;) It was all Timegates fault !

It must be like a chestburster that survives the process, not evolving but continuing to grow. There was a nice independent toy shop down the road that sold the line. They were quality products, even if an amount of the featured characters had fleeting relation to the film, and was just to sell more toys. They were up there with the Jurassic Park series (same company, I think, too)

    Oh calm down, dearie.

It was the original article I linked to, full of praise and positives. One of the few previews that I’d read that didn’t offer any hint of criticism or caution.

A lot of other sites saw this for the dog’s dinner they knew it’d be, as did many folk based on the “Borderlands funded by A:CM/SEGA cash” rumour that floated about for years, in combination with the development hell you seemed to be ignorant of.

But hey, shout at me all you want, mate (really ?), and fire off news stories from my links.
    I don’t mind.

    @89

Nothing in that hands-on session sparked caution in my mind. It was a carefully selected cross-section of the campaign and multiplayer geared to make the game feel brilliant.

I’m not shouting at you, just calmly, merely stating that I was not intentionally hyping the game up. My review shows that I’m not happy with the end result. Is a person not allowed to change their opinion on a game?

If a game feels shit, I’ll say it is.

Surely you must understand why I have to make this clear, right?

Yes ‘mate’. I try to get along with everyone here, but clearly you’re not interested. Fair enough.

Sot sure what movie you watched, but they never “nuked it from orbit” they let the atmospheric processor blow, which was good enough, but you don’t know if the explosion was nuclear or anything, also the processor was not right next to Hadley’s Hope, it was quite some distance away.

@104: Given how even “good” developers struggled with WiiU ports (it’s normal as the console is still “new” to them), and how bad A:CM seems to be on the technical side, I fear the WiiU might be the worst version of the lot, technically speaking (they even pushed the release date on it, probably not for polish, but rather because they might have even bigger struggles with it).

This really sucks, as all alien fans had high expectations on this. I’ll probably take it once it’s gone under 20€

I’m not too surprised by this now that I see it was published by Sega.

Sega had a brief period where they were actually publishing or involved in the making of GOOD games that people wanted: Valkyria Chronicles, Hyperdimension Neptunia, Bayonetta, Vanquish. It was going slow, but they were on the path to rebuilding interest and faith in their offerings. But then they suddenly decided to do things like pass on the chance to publish Bayonetta 2, or make Valkyria Chronicles 2 into a generic mish-mash of anime styles and cliches followed by refusing to release Valkyria Chronicles 3, which appeared to get back in the right direction, outside Japan at all.

Sega’s nowhere near the level of awfulness that Squeenix, Capcom and Konami (aside from Kojima Productions) share, but that’s only because the only old IP they have that they’re taking the time to screw up is Sonic, and that whole franchise is best described as FUBAR at this point. Sega’s more or less dead as a viable video game company unless they get back on the path they decided to walk away from a few years back, since unlike the three I mentioned, the only blind fanboys they have willing to buy any awful crap they make are Sonic ones.
