Star Trek release date set ahead of new movie

Star Trek is due at the end of April, a few weeks before the second JJ Abrams movie releases.

Namco Bandai Australia has confirmed an April 26 local release date for the Digital Extremes-developed shooter, which is coming to PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Meanwhile, Star Trek: Into Darkness, the second release in JJ Abrams' rebooted the film series, should turn up on May 17.

No word on international dates as yet, but Star Trek pre-orders net the Elite Officer Pack, which contains 10 uniforms for Kirk and Spock as well as a pile of weapons.

The game isn't based on the new film, but on the reboot as a whole, featuring a standalone story about Captain Kirk and Mister Spock versus the Gorn, written by BAFTA Award winner Marianne Krawczyk, who co-wrote God of War. It's a co-op affair, and apparently quite charming.

Actors Chris Pine (Kirk) and Zachary Quinto (Spock) lent their likenesses and voices to the game, which also features Zoe Saldana (Lieutenant Uhura), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Karl Urban (Dr. McCoy) John Cho (Sulu) and Anton Yelchin (Chekov).
