EA has announced that Madden 2014 will be titled Madden 25, as previously thought yesterday.

It’s part of the series’ 25th anniversary.

“There’s no better way to celebrate and mark the culmination of 25 years of innovation than by naming this year’s game Madden NFL 25,” said Cam Weber, GM of American Football for EA Sports. “This year’s game will push the boundaries with gameplay and feature innovations that will lay a very strong foundation for the next 25 years of this storied franchise.”

The newest Madden NFL Cover Vote will be held across ESPN platforms and SportsNation, while a bracket of “32 all-time NFL greats will go head-to-head against one another, as will 32 modern NFL superstars,” with the winners of each bracket facing off in the final round.

The Madden franchise has sold through approximately 99 million units and generated more than $3.7 billion in net revenue since its inception.

Madden NFL 25 is in development at EA Tiburon and will be available PS3 and Xbox 360 on August 27.

The more I think about it, the more I think it’s really the impossible task to create a true football game.

A quarterback has a couple of seconds to get the ball away if he’s in the shotgun. As impossible as that must be in reality, I think it’s so difficult you can barely do it with a gamepad.

And then you have a million variables in terms of audibles, running quarterbacks, or just linemen deciding to throttle the guy in front of them for one amazing play.

At least for me, I’ve enjoyed the more stylized games a lot more than Madden since it became realistic. In the mid 90′s you had a very orderly top-down view, and with Blitz and Street you had versions of the game that were truly made to be just a videogame.
