Brian Reynolds considering forming a new studio now that he’s exited Zynga

Brian Reynolds, a chief game designer at Zyna East who announced his departure this week, has said on VentureBeat today he is considering starting his own development firm.

According to Reynolds, he wants to “experiment more than might be appropriate for a publicly traded company, and I might want to do something that would be ‘off strategy’ for Zynga or otherwise too risky.”

Reynolds said a smaller firm would also allow him to write codes for his games, and tablet and mobile games may be a good place to start for him.

Before joining Zynga, Reynolds founded Big Huge Games, and co-founded Firaxis Games with Sid Meier.

It’s an old joke to call it “Brian Reynold’s Alpha Centauri”, but it really was.

I was playing it recently when Crossfire was added for free on GOG, and it felt a little dated, but it really is an awesome take on the Civ model.

Focusing on relationships and identities almost makes it feel like a diplomatic RPG.

But since he’s pretty much joined the dark side, I think it’s too much to hope for a follow-up.
