Sine Mora has been one of the most discussed scrolling shooters of the generation, so it’s interesting to hear that the game’s creative director Theodore Reiker has left developer Digital Reality to form a new studio – Prior Games. The developer has confirmed that he’s teaming up with another Japanese studio to release a new shooter in 2014.
Prior Games is helmed by Reiker and is said to include other talent from Digital Reality as well. Speaking with Joystiq he confirmed that the studio would release a new shmup in 2014 codenamed Project Verona, in what he labelled another bout of “Japanese-Hungarian co-development.”
What he’s referring to is Sine Mora, which was co-developed by Suda 51′s outfit Grasshopper Manufacture. Reiker said of the new project, “It will be more conservative in its gameplay and less ambiguous in its storytelling”, and added that it would be unconventional and try new things with the genre.
Before Project Verona comes to pass, the studio is focusing on smaller titles for mobiles and handheld devices. The first of which is Rotolla, which hits iOS in February. It’s a hexagonal block puzzler that Reiker likened to Tetris.
He added “Our plan is to release four microgames this year and a second wave of three titles next year. We are a small company and we do not want to grow beyond 15 persons. We would like to keep the ‘manufacture’ feeling even if the company size is limiting the scope of our output.”
