Resident Evil may undergo a reboot once Revelations feedback is received, says producer

Thursday, 31 January 2013 18:03 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Resident Evil: Revelations producer Masachika Kawata has said there’s a possibility for a reboot of the franchise, as long as it preserves “what Resident Evil is and what makes it appealing to fans.”

Speaking with Eurogamer, Kawata said a reboot would also have to be accessible to new players, and would “almost entail having a slight reboot to get the series into a place where it would work with open-world gameplay.”

“That’s just a personal opinion,” he noted. “A lot of decisions would have to be taken before something like that is done to the series, but it is something that. There is a possibility.”

Kawata has worked on every game in the series since the acclaimed Resident Evil 4, and on classic Capcom titles such as PN03, Onimusha and Dino Crisis before that.

He further stated that any changes to the series will be looked at once Resident Evil: Revelations is released on console, and feedback is received.

“I think we’ll get a lot of input from the fanbase and the media on what it means for Resident Evil, and what it could mean for the future of the series,” he said. “We’ll definitely be looking at that as a signpost for where we need to be going next.

“Moving forward I can see us focusing even more on the horror aspect and fear in the series, and see us making something scarier than we have already. If anyone is waiting for an open-world Resident Evil, I think it will certainly be quite a while.

“So in the meantime, I recommend giving Revelations a try.”

Kawata dismissed whether these possible changes were a reflection of feedback from Resident Evil

Resident Evil: Revelations will release on PC, PS3, Wii U and Xbox 360 in North America on May 21 and in Europe on May 24.

The title will also be available to download digitally from the same dates on PS3 for €49.99 and PC for €39.99. Details on digital versions for Xbox 360 and Wii U will follow at a later date.

More action please, and def no bloody survival horror rubbish.

I don’t play Resident Evil games to be scared, there all about the balls out action and especially amazing co-op gameplay.

If anything, they should be more like the awesome movies or CGI movies, that would be crazy cool.

    Also, no more zombies please.

If they handle it like the DMC reboot, i say go guys give the game to a capable developer, maybe grashooper, perhaps, they made in shadows of the damned what resident evil 5 or 6 should had been.

There’s really no need to reboot the story. Take the gameplay back to its horror roots, but just go with something simple story-wise. There’s a million places it could go from where they left off.

Jesus Christ, Capcom. How long before Street Fighter gets rebooted, at this rate?

If they reboot the series before making a Resident Evil 7 that stars Jill and Claire, then Revelations will be the last time I ever buy anything Resident Evil.

I am not just saying that. Capcom purposely excluded Jill and Claire from Resident Evil 6 while touting the game as the biggest, most important game to celebrate the series’ anniversary, while once again tossing Chris and Leon everywhere and putting Ada, Sherry and their new characters on a pedestal. Jill and Claire should have been included in RE6 as major and playable characters, and since they weren’t, as far as I’m concerned it’s an absolute requirement that the next game give them their due respect.

Revelations does not count; it’s a sidegame and not a main entry, it was created with the intent of it only being on handhelds originally, and there’s no Claire.

Only after an RE7 starring Jill and Claire will I say “Okay, a reboot sounds fine.” If they try to reboot this series without doing that, then they can go screw themselves (though to be fair, they’ve been doing a terrific job at screwing themselves for the past year as it is).

Edit: Also when I say “I’d be okay with a reboot after RE7,” I mean FULL reboot, as in completely brand new characters as the stars and absolutely none of the old ones returning. If they’re going to pull a DmC then hell no.

wtf why would you want to reboot it? cant they just like change gameplays like from 3 to 4 and also be more like 4 and get coop away from the series

    #15 2 years ago
  16. YoungZer0

I don’t think a reboot is really necessary.

Why not just tell a completely different story, with completely different characters? At a completely different location? No more super soldiers/cops/children. Just normal folks. This is exactly what RE6 should’ve been.

Instead we had Leon Kennedy trying to talk to a infected President and taking elevator rides with Zombie folks.

And get some writers for fucks sake. The last thing i want to hear my character say when he’s chased by a monster is “THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING ABOUT WOMEN!”

    It doesn’t make sense.

Why not just continue where you left off with Resident Evil Outbreak 2? Consoles have proper Online functions now and that game had huge potential.

Anyway, if the decide to reboot it, i wouldn’t blame them. Is Visceral Games free to develop it?

Who cares anymore Capcom… You’ve been in competition with Square enix to see who could ruin their franchises faster. I doubt you’ll make a Resident Evil title worthy of its name.
Now, all you have in this day in age with the new gen gamers is call of duty fanatics who want every game to be C.O.D.
    “balls to the wall?”
House of the dead was a shoot em up game…
Resident evil was about atmosphere, puzzles, and tension… which is all gone now…
“HOUSE OF THE DE-… Resident Evil; “The Call of Duty!”

Capcom needs to throw away that fcuking reboot button they’ve been eager to press lately. Doing nothing with MegaMan, causing ruccus with DmC, now wants to reboot their biggest franchise? It’s official, Capcom’s brain drain has left them with an Identity Crisis.

@21: The plus we can say is that Capcom may be able to ruin franchises, but at least they can’t ruin the lives and creativity of the exquisite talent that left them. It appears that Keiji Inafune was their last chance to turn back from the path of completely sucking as a company.

Capcom, like Squeenix, has become a bad joke. I expect that fairly soon, they’ll show themselves to be in such a pathetic state that most people won’t even be able to hate them anymore. At some point when a company gets pathetic enough, you start to pity them for the ineptitude of the execs out for money at any cost and the “genius” hacks that think their fanfic fantasies are more important than respecting the IPs they’re working with.

Also, companies like Capcom and Squeenix have proven one thing: if you’re a developer, NEVER get in any kind of contractual agreement with them. At best, your grand vision will not reach the audience it could because of the bad reputation these companies have willingly made for themselves. At worst, these companies will force your company to make abysmal and asinine changes under a binding contract.

Open world ?!, I think #8The Dude got something going on, they will probably get Alice to be in it, to make it accessible and appealing to a big crowd, super human, karate moves, bullet time, big ass monsters, ………….etc — it is the shizz, an action game with no horror nor survival, and you can say goodbye to RE.

On another note, whatever Capcom does it will take awhile right ?!, like 5 or 6 years yeah ?!, so meanwhile let’s keep pumping the good stuff to keep RE alive, for example in 2013 we are getting Revelation, in 2014 we should get RE:Remake, in 2015 we should get RE:Zero, in 2016 we should get RE:Outbreak File #, in 2017 we get an HD RE:Outbreak Collection with online function, and finally in 2018 we get the Rebooted RE.

If they were going to do a total reboot I think Kawata is the man to do it. In both interviews and inside Revelations itself he displays a grasp of what made Resident Evil what it was. I don’t think theres anyone left at Capcom apart from him that I would trust with Resi.

Anyway if I don’t get a Barry Burton game soon I swear to God I will be mildly disappointed.

@25: I can see it now.

BEHOLD! The epic story of oMEGA Man! The epic story of a robot made in the image of a boy and raised as one by his inventor and father figure, Dr. Light. He lives in a world in which the Robot Masters, overlords of the whole world, rule with an iron fist. A grim future, where robots are the rulers, and humans, overthrown by the robots, are mere slaves to their every whim.

This boy, the oMEGA Man, on the cusp of young adulthood, knows a meager yet happy life on the fringes of the robot society until one day, the Robot Masters come and kill Dr. Light for the threat his human genius poses to their rule. After discovering his robot heritage when the Robot Masters give him a blow that would have killed any normal human being, his boyish innocence lost in blood, oMEGA Man swears an oath of VENGEANCE! He seeks out the various upgrades made by Dr. Light in a time when he wanted oMega Man to be a weapon, and hunts down the Robot Masters to acquire their powers in the ultimate quest to take down their cyborg leader, the nefarious Dr. Wily.

Drawing from such works as “The Jungle” for its presentation of lowly human workers mistreated in factories, and such grandiose films as Terminator and The Matrix, oMEGA Man will struggle with his identity, torn between an origin of soulless, unfeeling circuits and processors, and his upbringing in the morals, values and raw emotions of a human being. oMEGA Man is truly the thinking man’s game, and by the end of this tale, you will find yourself asking: what, truly, does it mean to be human?

I’m wearing a suit right now and, oh wait, why don’t we put In-App purchases into the next installment? That would be so clever! And we need way more explosions, for the younger generations. Co-op is doing great but we defintely need more brown on the maps, to make it look more real. And forget that horror-survival crap, the smartphone generation has no time for that! Let’s make it a reboot were they can identify their selfes, like say a young chris redfield! And lets make it loud and noisy and so many explosions and full of highspeed-pursuits, that one can hear CoD’s jaw dropping wide open. And don’t you programmers forget: we need our own community-socialising-plattform to keep it rolling aaall the time!

@29: Squeenix is worse than Capcom. Capcom didn’t decide to reward one of the worst hacks of any creative industry (Motomu Toriyama) by giving him free license to transform a strong, smart, courageous female protagonist into an insultingly sexist wet dream just short of softcore porn, all while permitting a string of sequels based on his attempt to throw away the Final Fantasy series’ stronger emphasis on magic and mystical things over technology in favor of pure science fiction where summons that used to be treated as actual gods and mystical beings are now all mechs.

All this while this hack repeatedly tried to make excuses for backlash to his garbage and blame anyone but himself, and while he and Tabata openly lied about the content of 3rd Birthday. As much as I loathe Capcom’s antics over the past year, they still haven’t reached the same level of terribleness and stupidity that is Squeenix rewarding Toriyama for utterly destroying one of the strongest female protagonists the medium ever had to satisfy his perverted otaku fantasies, refusing to undo the damage he did, and promoting him rather than demoting or firing him. If anything, it’s an insult to suggest Capcom is as bad as Squeenix. At least Capcom can be honest about their hatred toward their past and their own fans.

and those idiots at capcom have the balls to say straying too far from what makes a resident evil after that shitfest re6. Then again all you bitches deserve that game for not slamming re4 just like currently dmc is(which is actually a good remake). re6 was just the expected evolution of the franchise after that.

  33. manamana

Actually I think Revelations is the better follow-up to RE4 than 5 or 6. It really has some cool moments but all in all it’s story is just nothing to write home about. Neither is the repetitive gameplay. But the ship has totally the mansion atmosphere I dig so much. And the underwaterlevel on the 3DSXL really is a friggin blast! :-)

    #33 2 years ago

@32: I think RE4 was a fairly reasonable natural progression for the series, and that it was RE5 where things started getting really stupidly off track.

@31 – If you’re actually calling Yuna in FFX-2 “just short of softcore porn,” I’d hate to actually see how tame any of your porn is.

    #35 2 years ago
  36. Clupula

@27 – Pretty much, although he’d also have a dark, tortured back story. Dr. Wily would turn out to be a former Nazi scientist who escaped after WWII. Unfortunately, in the dark twist before the final 3rd of the game, you’d discovered Dr. Light was, as well.

    #36 2 years ago
  37. salarta

@35: I’m referring to how Toriyama and Tabata ruined Aya Brea with 3rd Birthday. Though FFX-2 was horrible as well, essentially a lighter prelude of suckage to 3rd Birthday. Both games that were all about taking female protagonists that could be considered as being strong adult women in their own ways, given personalities in which they behave like they’re little preteen girls. Both games that went out of their way to overly sexualize their female characters, and add in sexually focused remarks and gameplay elements galore (FFX-2 with the massage game, 3rd Birthday with maid outfits and bunnysuits and other fetish outfits that tear off with damage). Both involved Toriyama turning an established male character into a perverted self-insert (Brother in FFX-2 horndogging over his cousin Yuna, Maeda in 3rd Birthday talking about Aya’s body and wanting to taste her tears).

Toriyama is a man that has absolutely no respect for anything he touches. To him, new projects using highly acclaimed IPs made before he came along are a place for him to force his perverted wet dreams onto the wider populace as “canon” and get paid for it. I’m completely serious when I say that almost every person that’s ever written a fanfic on fanfiction.net is more deserving of the level of power and responsibility that Toriyama has been given. I’d honestly feel more at ease hearing a 13 year old girl whose only writing history is a Mary Sue fanfic was helming the next Final Fantasy than to hear Toriyama is involved.

But, I didn’t mean to get into that rant, so I’m going to stop commenting on it with this reply, since this isn’t the place for it. This is a Resident Evil article, not a Squeenix one.

If anything — Resident Evil is THE franchice that needs a reboot after horrible RE5-6 (I personally add 4 to that list also, but many disagree).
As to where it should go? Roots.

Wesker maybe even as a more of a playable anti-hero rather than a full time villain. But that’s arguable.

    That game would be succesful.

The franchise doesn’t need a reboot. It needs to be laid to rest.

It was *never* a good series. It got away with it because the games tried to be “scary”, and the graphics were nice. The acting was terrible, the scares were non-existent, the stories were awful, and the controls were dire. The only Resident Evil game that was even close to half decent was Resident Evil 4.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in nostalgia.

@39: I think that’s more personal opinion based in not understanding the appeal of Resident Evil talking. Nobody except the really desperate would try to say the things you pointed out aren’t true, but the argument against its gameplay kind of misses both the actual focus of the series’ gameplay (survival, not action) and the way many games were done at the time. Compared to point-and-click horror games of the time, Resident Evil was a step up. Complaining about the acting being terrible and the stories being awful is also missing the B-movie angle intended with the game, which was made even more apparent with the live-action opening.

The only criticism I agree with is the scares part, because the scares were the cheap kind like The Ring and films that followed in its wake. Other than that, almost everything you said as a complaint against Resident Evil is true for the real Silent Hill series (SH1-4).

I think the series needs to be laid to rest only if Capcom has no intention of treating the IP and its characters with respect, including if they have no intention of making RE7 star Jill and Claire with absolutely no Chris, Leon or Ada (and probably Sherry too) in sight to make up for Jill and Claire’s exclusion from RE6. I mean sure, laying the series to rest won’t get me to start buying any of their games again, but it’d be better for both the series and my opinion of Capcom if they could set aside their greedy toolish ways for once to do the better alternative if they utterly lack the talent and common sense to do better.
