PS4: PlayStation Meeting 2013 heralds big news from Sony

“Just what will Sony announce at PlayStation Meeting 2013?” is a question almost nobody is asking, because we’re all getting short odds on the answer being “PlayStation 4″.

Sony has announced a big reveal coming 6:00PM PST on February 20. You can sign up for updates via a teaser page.

The last PlayStation Meeting was called to announce the Vita, so if this one’s not the next PlayStation console, it’s going to have to be something really spectacular.

Next-generation hardware announced from Sony and Microsoft are expected this year. Although Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai told press Microsoft could make the first move, sources said Sony wanted to beat Microsoft to the punch, something back up by independent rumours.

The firm has been struggling with financial issues and may need the boost of a new hardware announce to retain stockholder faith. Some sources have suggested the new consoles might ship before the holiday season this year, but bear in mind Sony announced the Vita almost a full year before its launch.

Sony released a teaser trailer to go with the announcement, which is full of abstract shapes. Feel free to speculate on what they might mean and express your disdain for the female sigh at the end.

PlayStation 4: what we think we know

Sony’s next generation PlayStation 4 has generated a number of persistent rumours, many of which have attached the codename Orbis to the device. VG247′s sources suggests the PS4 will have significantly more raw computational power than Durango, Microsoft’s next-generation offering.

The console has been frequently linked to AMD 10 eight-core technology, and is said to have at least 4GB of RAM; internal storage of at least 256GB; and a Blu-ray drive capable of reading discs of up to 100GB of data.

Sony is said to be aiming for an affordable price point and to use the same input and output devices, so you shouldn’t need a fancy new telly. The system’s OS is said to have been heavily revised since PlayStation 3′s XMB, and thanks to 1GB of RAM dedicated to system functions, will allow users to switch in and out of games and system functions fluidly.

Multiple rumours and alleged leaks have backed up these claims.

On the less frequently-cited side, there’s word that Sony may develop a new controller for the console. One whisperer said it might have biometric features. A new social and multiplayer service, BigFest, is expected.

EA said yesterday it has next-generation games in the works, and Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream recently registered a domain suggesting it has one, too. Mentions of next-generation hardware and games have been turning up on résumés and job advertisements for well over a year now.

Sony shut down production of the PlayStation 2 recently, which is sensible if a new generation of hardware manufacturing is required.

Once again you fundamentally do not understand what is being discussed.

Be a good little nerd and go talk about how many pixels you own somewhere else.

Run along now.

@150, you are a very good person so will be politely as possible.

bout keyboards. I agree that not everyone likes it, but I don’t understand how mouse and keyboard looks like a “work stuff only for you”. I hear this actually for the first time. That’s interesting though.

About forums. PC’s these days are so advanced that you don’t need to check forums or fix anything. If you have decent hardware (not some suer ellite stuff from THERMALTTAKE ARMOR) it should work fine as it is.

Cheers mate.

@Fin, “I asked
“Bro, didn’t you play MW2 for like 400 hours?”
reply
“No bro, it was Black Ops. Your point?””

But you failed again. My answer was not about how much hours I spent on CoD. It is about what game I played the most. MW2 you can count out. I played maybe 50 hours at best/ Campaign incl.. But BO I played much more.

your point?

I can only imagine the reaction everyone would have if what they’re doing here turns out not to be the PS4. I wouldn’t be surprised if that turns out to be the case, but seeing as how the last meeting held unveiled the Vita (or NGP as it was being called at the time), and Sony itself is in a bit of financial dire straights, and could use some excitement around its brand, PS4 seems like a pretty safe bet. Though I have to say, I thought 2012 was a down year, but still a great year none the less. It truly showed now is a great time to be a gamer, as we’re getting games that are pushing both consoles to their very limits (as well as PC’s), while at the same time, laying an inkling towards the future. Speaking of that, if it turns out to be the PS4, I hope they have some great games to show off with it, and not just tech demo’s, though if this is not the case, they better be some pretty damn good tech demo’s, not like that one Phil Harrison did during the PS3′s unveil at E3 2006.

I do, I’m just not a fanboy like you. Got it bro this time? Got it? Mkay? Move on, Brah. Halo matches are awaiting you. Have fun and don’t forget to come to Ps3 thread to say something like “PS3 sox, Xbawks rulez.” It always adds something to the conversation/discussion.

@ManuOtaku, Yeah, love that too. We should play together next time on the next Playstation or Xbox. I am planning to buy one which will have the games I mostly like.

I think you should broaden your gaming stuff. I like PC’s and I like games on consoles too. They have one thing in common “Good games” and for me good games must have also the best possible hardware and I also enjoy playing more on K&M. Have fun.

“too bad that not all the PC games support gamepads”

All of them support gamepad.

There is a software that allows you to connect any controller you want “PS3′s, Xbox’s” old controllers, Wii and any stuff you want (Any controller on the market that has USB in it) and you can customize macros on it.

How it works: You just choose the buttons from a keyboard and move them to your controller in that software. Program shows you how to do it. It’s really easy and you do it only ONCE in your life just to be sure that you like that combination and that you will stick to it. (you can always change it anyway.)

and you can play every game on your PC with a controller even if your PC game will say to you: “I hate controllers”. It does not matter because your controller will emulate your keyboard buttons. :d

It requires 5 minutes of research and that’s it. You are done.

If you plan on using an X360 controller, you NEED the designated PC cable or wireless adapter for it unless the controller is wired. The charging cables you can get for them are only capable of charging them.

No, you do not understand. Every reply you make further reinforces that.

The discussion you so rudely butted in on with your incorrect assumptions was never about ‘X sucks, Y rules’. I wouldn’t expect someone like you to be able to identify a non-polar discussion anyway.

The discussion was why the majority of console gamers do not see the PC as a viable gaming platform.

You should try doing a tech support role for a week to end users. Your outlook would change. That is guaranteed. To someone who has not grown up using PC’s, the interface and terminology are an utterly impenetrable barrier.

Because you cannot see the barrier from a non-technical person’s perspective, you cannot understand the issues, so you just fly off into a contradictory rage with a barrage of childish insults and ‘no, YOU suck’ comments.

PC gaming has changed a lot over the last 8 years or so. Okay, I’m more on the high end, but gaming is a lot easier than it used to be. Most games are download, install, and play. Not a lot of tinkering needed. Just as simple as putting a disk in/downloading, install, and playing on my PS3/X360. Need to update video drivers every so often. Downloading and installing is no harder than anything else on your computer.

I have my computer attached to my 42″ LCD TV with an HDMI cable with full audio support so I get my sound through the home theater. I have a Logitech wireless keyboard/touchpad ($40). I have wireless X360 controllers (wireless adapter $10). Seriously, it takes only three clicks of the mouse to change from my monitors to my TV through the Nvidia control panel.

I can play my tradition PC games and FPS with my wired M&K and games I think play better with a controller like Assassin’s Creed or Super Meat Boy with a gamepad. I really get the best of both worlds.

This late in such a long cycle, if you don’t have both PS3 and X360 and checking out indie exclusives or free to plays on the PC that any low-mid spec PC can handle, you are probably in the minority of core gamers. I find if you are hating on one platform or another, you are also probably missing out on a lot of great gaming experiences.

For casual gamers, they will go with whatever is comfortable for them, be it tablet or console or whatever. Trying convenience them how easy it is on PC now has been the hard part. That is what Valve has been trying to do.

For those that think with Steam you have to always be connected, there is an Offline mode.

Now, Chivalry had a nice update so it is time to get medieval on some peeps. I’m so terrible at it, yet it is so fun.

@164, Computers aren’t as hard as you make them out to be. If you’re not sure about something, google it. It’s how I learnt everything I know about computing.

I get that many people such as yourself don’t want to go through that process but it simply isn’t as difficult as you make it out to be. Though having a tech savvy friend always helps.

Google is our best friend, to be sure.

But (and there is always a but) you have to know a bit about the subject to be able to google in the first place.

Thing is, you and I know that language. We can find answers. It’s not so easy to find even simple answers in a different language.

Looking out from our ‘experience bubble’(TM) can say ‘pfft, its easy stuff’. From the outside it just isnt.

@169 So what you think you have to go through in order to have a working stable PC? I build my own rigs, always. And I wasn’t born with a natural ability to build rigs and maintain them. If you run into problems you don’t need a toolbox and fancy electronic devices, a multimeter and an oscilloscope in order to fix it you know.

It’s nothing to make such fuss over, really. You pick a decent mobo, decent CPU a decent GFX and a very stable PSU and it’s over. There are tons of website that recommend you on what components to pick and what works best with them. There are even manufactured PCs that Alienware, Asus and others have built for your convenience just like a console purchase you wont need to worry yourself with anything.

I have a pretty mainstream rig, an Asus Maximus III extreme mobo, a core i5 cpu and a XFX R5850 gfx, which I never even shutdown. 2 years now, and I didn’t shut it down unless I needed to add in a few more HDDs or RAMs.

It’s not something that some of us born with, anyone can maintain their own PC.

@169, My point was that I was on the outside. Until 7 years ago, my only considerable computing experience was playing with Age of Empires 2 & even back then it was as simple as putting the disc in, clicking installs, waiting 10 or so mins then clicking the game icon & I was playing.

I have to wonder if this is indeed true are Sony in panic mode?
I mean 3 launched less than 6 years ago which is a good bit short of the 10 year plus life they envisaged.

Yes I know all companies come out with that bull but with the momentum the 3 has been gaining over the last few years I reckon Sony would be more than happy to keep it going a good bit longer.

We all know MS got the online part of gaming on its console pretty damn good and Sony never quite managed to catch them on that throughout this gen.

So why the rush to get a new one out?
If I were to hazard a guess it would be that MS have them on the back foot and they reckon its more important to get off to a quick start this time having seen there PS2 successes quickly evaporate this gen.

For me anyway I hope its not a rush job as I reckon a lot more scrutiny will be put upon it this time with Xbox live been the benchmarker as to its online offerings.

Its a bit like looking in a mirror from the xbox ps2 days with the situation totally reversed.
I myself dont reckon MS will be lying down with there nextbox so ps4 will need to be pretty special imo.

I actually think MS will let them go ahead of theres and will be able to compare there own one for a bit of tinkering around the edges.

Interesting times ahead and quite astonishing really how situations can change from one generation to the next.

Just as a footnote, I own both and enjoy them both and would hate to see Sony or MS out of the market as the competition suits us more than them.

@172 “..which is a good bit short of the 10 year plus life they envisaged.”

Er, no. They stated a 10 year lifespan, not 10 years before they release a successor.

If you look at the previous two generations you will see that the PlayStation platforms have been supported by Sony for a number of years after their successor has launched. PS2 has only stopped production in the last couple of weeks, for example. No panic rushing going on.

The PS2′s best years were the two years after the PS3 had already been out. I suspect the exact same thing with happen with the PS3′s best years.

I am kind of in the same type of boat as poly and reask. Posting is wearing thin atm. Same old shit day in and day out. At some point it is nice to take a step back and just play the games.

I am really not very excited for either Sony or MS systems. Maybe that is not the best way to put that. I am excited about the possibilites. But the hype leading upto it…pointless. And the constant fanboy back and forth…draining. Plus I really don’t play very much on PS360 systems now. I play mostly on PC, sometimes on consoles. I just don’t see that changing.

Next gen will prolly just be the same tired and worn out franchises that I am bored of now…but with graphical upgrade that will have little or no impact on me because my PC already does 1080p+ at 60fps, yada yada.

So it kind of leaves me with “thats nice” attitude. Consolewise I am most impressed with the WiiU Gamepad then anything else I have seen or can imagine being revieled. If Sony does rethink their controlers to be WiiUlike…that would make me perk up. I don’t like the idea of smart glass and Vita to PS means very little.

So, I mean…new consoles…ok sure. Lets see em already. Going to be a long year I guess.

For what it is worth, I said sometime ago that Sony should stick with PS3. They should start packing Vita in with every new PS3. They should use Giakia to put out games that can compete with XBNXT. And yeah I know, lots of reasons why that wouldn’t work for a few people. But it would save Sony millions/billions. The next gen will driven on services. PS3 can do that now and at a price point that can compete with Nintendo and MS(and anyone else). A very expensive system with a tuff launch could be the straw that breaks the camels back for Sony.

But it is what it is. We should know more end of the monthish.
