PS4: PlayStation Meeting 2013 heralds big news from Sony

Thursday, 31 January 2013 23:54 GMT By Brenna Hillier

“Just what will Sony announce at PlayStation Meeting 2013?” is a question almost nobody is asking, because we’re all getting short odds on the answer being “PlayStation 4″.

Sony has announced a big reveal coming 6:00PM PST on February 20. You can sign up for updates via a teaser page.

The last PlayStation Meeting was called to announce the Vita, so if this one’s not the next PlayStation console, it’s going to have to be something really spectacular.

Next-generation hardware announced from Sony and Microsoft are expected this year. Although Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai told press Microsoft could make the first move, sources said Sony wanted to beat Microsoft to the punch, something back up by independent rumours.

The firm has been struggling with financial issues and may need the boost of a new hardware announce to retain stockholder faith. Some sources have suggested the new consoles might ship before the holiday season this year, but bear in mind Sony announced the Vita almost a full year before its launch.

Sony released a teaser trailer to go with the announcement, which is full of abstract shapes. Feel free to speculate on what they might mean and express your disdain for the female sigh at the end.

PlayStation 4: what we think we know

Sony’s next generation PlayStation 4 has generated a number of persistent rumours, many of which have attached the codename Orbis to the device. VG247′s sources suggests the PS4 will have significantly more raw computational power than Durango, Microsoft’s next-generation offering.

The console has been frequently linked to AMD 10 eight-core technology, and is said to have at least 4GB of RAM; internal storage of at least 256GB; and a Blu-ray drive capable of reading discs of up to 100GB of data.

Sony is said to be aiming for an affordable price point and to use the same input and output devices, so you shouldn’t need a fancy new telly. The system’s OS is said to have been heavily revised since PlayStation 3′s XMB, and thanks to 1GB of RAM dedicated to system functions, will allow users to switch in and out of games and system functions fluidly.

Multiple rumours and alleged leaks have backed up these claims.

On the less frequently-cited side, there’s word that Sony may develop a new controller for the console. One whisperer said it might have biometric features. A new social and multiplayer service, BigFest, is expected.

EA said yesterday it has next-generation games in the works, and Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream recently registered a domain suggesting it has one, too. Mentions of next-generation hardware and games have been turning up on résumés and job advertisements for well over a year now.

Sony shut down production of the PlayStation 2 recently, which is sensible if a new generation of hardware manufacturing is required.

Hirai actually said not too long ago that he wanted MS to make it’s first move. No?

I’m not sure that they will show PS4. Maybe they will show what hardware is capable of. Because I see no reason for Sony to announce PS4 at all because they don’t want to fail that much like with PS3.

I think we will see a bunch of tech demos from First Party and maybe Third party. EA, Activision, Ubi.

    @monkeygourmet,
    “At least 1080p, 60fps”

Ahahahaha. Loooooool. No. Sorry. good luck having something in 30 frames per second.

    ^ I think every game will be 1080p, but 60 frames? No.Way.In.Hell.

60 frames per second is only for PC’s because you can change the hardware. (Unless PS4 will enable you to change hardware which will never happen anyway.) Games are better graphically and gameplay wise every year. No 60 frames on consoles. I think launch games will be in 60 Frames.

PS4 reveal already in February? I don’t know but i highly doubt that. I’d expect it alot closer to E3 really.

And if next-gen games won’t be 60fps, that would suck. I have a 60 inch plasma and i really notice that stuff. I recently placed the MG Rising demo and it was a delight with the 60 frames, or at least..it felt so damn smooth…had to be 60.

60fps only on pc? why? I think ps4 can run every game at 60fps if it comes out with rumoured specs. It is onl a game focused device not the pc.

    hey moonwalker
they did a playstation meeting for ps3 and one for vita and this the third one so there is like no way this is not ps4 announcement. they are inviting all the journalists and investors so yea bet on it. i just hope its not like the vita and release is early next year. i want it this fall damnit!

i am going to make the craziest prediction ever (this is highly unlikely). ps4 coming in may 2014. i think last of us will have a simultaneous ps4 release. gtav is going to release first on ps4 in may. probably the reason it got delayed for xbox 360 and ps3 the last minute. i know this is probably dumb but i just have a weird theory. last of us has not been playable yet. the journos have only seen it played by the devs. i just want to see someone do an apple and release something within 3 months. i am going to say it will release first in us and then europe and then last in japan because they have a lot of games coming out that they like coming out this year.

    #22 2 years ago

    My prediction:

Cloud gaming on both PS3 and Vita.

Remodeled PS3 that has more RAM target price still 300USD

    More MMO games on PS3

PS HOME made compatiable on Web Browsers, Vita, and streamlined to the OS

    Outrageous Predictions:

MS and Sony announce a merger for next gen. Recent specs people have been seeing is a collab device to streamline MS and SONY into one mega console next gen.

    #25 2 years ago
  26. Moonwalker1982

    @23

Indeed, sounds like it will be pretty big.

But still, Sony has disappointed me bigtime with several E3 shows now, no expectations here. Same goes for MS. I hope both companies still know how to make an awesome show.

    http://www.vg247.com/forum/topic.php?id=7305

A very clever move from sony if it comes to fruition. Console reveals are big enough events to warrant their own conferences. I also said Kaz may be bluffing, guess I was right there too.

    #27 2 years ago
  28. mathare92

This has to be the big reveal right? Even a huge blowout about Gaikai integration would be a bit underwhelming with this kind of build-up. Whatever it is, I really hope it’ll be a leak-free reveal. Knowing Sony though, details are eventually going to filter through the grapevine at some point in these next three weeks.

If you ask me, this is what should be moving through the intranet at Sony’s Marketing Dept. right now…

Keep it safe. Keep it secret.

    #28 2 years ago
  29. Dragon246

    @mathare,
Agree 100%. But I really doubt anyone could keep such big reveals secret, as there are so many people involved, outside of sony no less. Every apple and samsung announcements only confirm what was known months ago.
Blame the chinese for this :D

Just to add, livestream will be done on ps blog.
And when IGN contacted Sony for comment, they said -
“The PlayStation meeting will be about the future of the PlayStation business.”
The meeting will take place in New York City.

    #29 2 years ago
  30. NocturnalB

    @Erth

What are you talking about? All of the CoD’s run between 45-60fps and it’s the end of the generation. Besides that, games get optimized when it comes to consoles. It’s up to the dev how the game is going to run, not just the consoles limitations. Plus, the consoles don’t have nearly as much background stuff running to bog them down. I’ll agree not EVERY game is going to do 60fps but i put that on the dev’s and how graphically intensive they make their game, how skilled they are at optimizing and polishing, and their engine.

    #30 2 years ago
  31. FeaturePreacher

  40. Johnny Cullen

@18 Actually, they didn’t use a PlayStation Meeting to announce PlayStation 3. I can’t speak for PlayStation 1 because I don’t know how that was announced.

But the last four hardware announces have been a mixture of E3 and PlayStation Meetings. PlayStation 2 was announced at a PlayStation Meeting in March 1999, whilst PlayStation 3 was infamously announced at E3 2005.

PlayStation Portable was (kind of) announced at E3 2003, but the final version wasn’t shown until a year later, also at E3. PlayStation Vita, as hopefully now well known around here, was announced at a PlayStation Meeting two years ago.

hmmm…i think the ps3 still has enough steam for 2 more years. the 360 for 1 max. i think in these financial crisis times they will wait as long as they can. vita isn’t out long, they just redesigned the ps3. maybe they just add a new touchpad controller, something vita to the ps3? new stuff to expand the life of the ps 3 for two more years? to counter wiiu and nextbox smartglas. something like this: “hey, you can just get our cheaper add on and you can have the same experience with less costs. the ps 3 still is a powerhouse, see, here you have the last of us, a game that looks better than any other game on any other system yet plus these great games, designed with the new *whatever it will be* in mind *then announce some games for that thing just like kinect, move stuff etc.” you know, something like that. counter, no need to release new hardware (in the form of a brandnew console) yet. that would be pretty clever actually. my prediction: this holiday nextbox, holiday 2014 ps4 – earliest spring or mid 2014… as a multiplat gamer that’s ok. i wouldn’t want to buy a ps4 this year. to me it still feels fresh enough and there are great games for it in the pipeline…

now i watched the trailer. transparent circles squares triangles, electricity that looks like it connects things. i still think it’ll be something wiiu, smart glassish and something vita/ps 3 combined…could also be a new console sure, could be anything. i just think it would make sense. i mean vita and ps3 are still super for great looking games. combine them, maybe make a new os, a new social online feature ‘big fest’ and sell the shit out of the hardware you already have. you can counter wiiu graphically and i believe nextbox too for two more years and then release the superduperultrapower ps4 in 2 years and be first with the most powerful console ever…

Nice to wake up to this. It’s probably PS4, but my own personal guess – based on nothing but past releases and gut feeling – is that it’ll launch spring 2014. They’ll announce now to appease investors and keep everyone sweet for a year. Then release in Easter next year.

I still have a gut feeling 720 will be out in November.

    #49 2 years ago
  50. killersense

@polygem i personally thought early 2014 for ps4 but they have to get out this holiday to gain lost market share from last gen. there are people that are starving for new hardware so they cannot afford to miss out on that initial rush. you are crazy if you think they can wait for 2 years. in 2 years time they could be the most powerful console but people would have already got the 720 and not see the increase in graphic quality as substantial to go out and buy the ps4 and the wii u would have cut the price to 199 by then and the xbox 720 would do a price cut right around ps4 launch as well so at which point they would be screwed.

they can and will definitely support the ps3 for 2 or 3 more years with software. if i were to guess seeing that this is revealed in US and not in japan like the vita that it is launching in the US first and europe next and japan last because i think ps3 is going to sell really well in japan going forward looking at the amount of software it is getting.

Seems quite early to start the hype train chuffing along, particularly if it’s a November/December 2013 or later launch. Got a feeling it’s going to be PS4 related but not the PS4. A service or idea that will be integral to it for example.

If it is PS4 then great, lets start seeming some firm details and lets see some proper stuff – not pre-renders – to show it.

Incoming giant enemy crabs and real-time weapons change?

I expect considerably less guff, ‘target renders’ and bravado than at the awful awful PS3 announce. Sony have learned some very hard lessons, or at least they better have learned them.

I definitely won’t be buying Playstation this time around, not after being burned by the PS3, but that doesn’t stop the rumours and hype from being exciting.

I hear they will be focussing on social features and how you interact with the console rather than how powerful it is.

The recent document on how they plan to implement the XBL sign-in model (copying Xbox again eh?), using a Gig for the OS, and the BigFest and new controller rumours seem to back this up.

    That’s all positive, IMO.

  53. monkeygourmet

Maybe the proposed new controller redesign?

Get that out there, try to get people used to that first before showing the console at e3?

Kind of like what Nintendo did but not a cluster fuck.

The dual shock is so iconic, if the suddenly announce a new pad a month or so before release, people would shit in their shoes.

So, maybe e new pad and a showreel of features and how it’s used alongside Home 2 or other online service.

How many Sony fans will refuse purchase if it is a tablet controller though. They have made it clear that its not needed for games? Or is it different if Sony does it?

Also, it wouldn’t Suprise me to see FF7 remake as a launch game.

I think the showreel will include snippets of a new uncharted, and the other usual suspect with the proper reveal of the console at e3.

The PS2 was announced 1 year before its release (in Japan).
The PSP was announced 1.5 years before its release (in Japan).
The PS3 was announced 1.5 years before its release (in Japan).
The PSVita was announced 1 year before its release (in Japan).

European release has always been at least a few months after Japan.

They may announce the PS4 now but a european release before spring 2014 would be a dubious proposition at best.

It’s perplexing to me that PC owners keep getting conned into buying new hardware and graphics cards that with current games only use 40% of their power due to poor optimisation.

Console games are holding them back, PC gamers know this, and STILL pay £500 for a graphics card! Many lols at PC snobs…

Also, with the release of new consoles, PC games should start to look better because there will be more parity.

@62, I’ve become a nearly exclusive PC gamer but the entry barrier is why many people still use consoles for gaming.

Many are unwilling or unable to build custom PCs themselves, nor do they know where to buy/order them (Googling is beyond some people’s comprehension) so their main choices for gaming PCs come from the dying prebuilt rip offs from Alienware & the likes.

Another issue is the price, it’d cost about $800 to BUILD a machine that’s capable of running everything on high @1080p.

Overall it’s just too complex for many of the console gamers to really consider. I mean people still turn to Alienware laptops for gaming & they cost a shit load, they probably never even seen Clevo sourced laptop from the likes of Sager.

TL;DR- PCs are too complex & pricey for many console gamers.

@83, You can go on about how easy it is to have a gaming PC but problems are always going to be a lot more hassle to deal with. You find it easy, I find it easy, and that’s because we make an effort to learn and know about. People who like gaming but don’t care to bother with the technicalities of it don’t want to deal with these issues. There’s nothing wrong with that.

You and others like you just need to accept high-end PC gaming is a hobby rather than the norm. And buying a “gaming PC” from retail is more often than not always a rip off and have terrible stock components.

It’s really not that hard to understand but then most PC gamers that can’t grasp this concept tend to be fanatical about their platform. Which is often another reason for “normal” people to stay away from the PC.

Blind hate is as misguided as blind love. And suggesting that fanboys (or haters) only belong to single faction is wilful ignorance at best and agenda-driven at worst.

But I do recall recently a very strong dismissal of criticism of one system being applied on the basis of “if you haven’t used it, you can’t really comment on it” (and various derivations of). I’m certainly going to be keeping an eye out for some whopping hypocrisy of that principle.

@85 C’mon the specs argument is old. I’ve listed my specs elsewhere before and it worked out to a £400ish for a very capable pc. Monitor can be a tv, mouse can be £5 and k/b can be £5 too. Or use a controller from a console. Lastly the internet connection is irrelevant because you need that for the ms and sony offerings. If you’re going to go there at least play fair in your reasoning.

    Thing is with PC games:

Unless I can max them out, I always feel I’m not playing them in the way they were intended.

    I stopped PC gaming when I got a 360.

@99 GoG pretty much gets rid of that problem. And at the price they sell the games, I can’t really complain.

@97, I’m a PC gamer, I built my machine and I recently ran into a problem where my machine was constantly BSoDing and after searching for potential problems online I solved the issue by opening it up and removing and replacing all the components. Now it’s fine again.

That’s not extremely difficult for me because I know what I’m doing. But do you really expect people to spend £300+ on components and then risk taking their machine apart?

PC gaming is only easy as long as you don’t run into major problems but you only have to check game forums of PC games to see the unending list of technical problems people run into.

@103 I’ve had to shell out over $500 in the past four years to fix problems with my console, smart device and handheld hardware… none of which were my Xbox 360, ironically.

Yeah, but there’s nothing I can do about it on 360! :) i just have to grin and bare it and gameplay is rarely effected.

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/df-hardware-introducing-the-digital-foundry-pc

People might want to read this. The short of it is you can build a console beating PC for £300. Obviously if you spend more the greater the margin at which you ‘beat’ the console.

    #106 2 years ago
  107. PC_PlayBoy

PSDeath = £400, ShiteBox = £400, Wii U = £300 and that’s before you’ve even bought a game, paid for a subscription and bought peripherals. Yeah, console gaming is really fucking cheap. Not.

The price for all of the above consoles could get you a great PC, it’ll run the games superior to any of the above consoles, the games are the best they can be (not a baseline experience like consoles offer), it’s got more new IP than you can keep up with, the games are cheaper, mods are a great, online gaming is free and does more than just play games! Plus it’ll last you easily 5/6 years without an upgrade.

And you won’t need to re-buy your games again when tech advances.

When those 4K TV’s become affordable, you won’t need to re-buy HD remakes. The games will already be 4K with a press of a button to change the resolution (or you could go into the config file and change it there).

Sadly, most console gamers can’t comprehend any of the above.

Seriously, why should i buy a PS4/720/Wii U? For a few overrated exclusives? Another Halo, another Uncharted?,, another God of War, another Forza, another Gears, another Zelda, another Mario? Fuck that, i’m snoring already even with the thought…

  109. viralshag

@105, That’s three devices, I wouldn’t say that’s bad going. You’re looking at $500 to replace a decent gfx card alone.

And did you spend $500 to get it repaired or to do the repairs yourself which is the real point here. Like I was saying before, if you go down the build-your-own route, you’re essentially looking at self-support.

    #109 2 years ago
  110. monkeygourmet

    @107

    So for about £300 I can buy a PC that’s a bit better than 360 / PS4.

    So what?

The best reason to buy a PC is if you like strategy or MMO type games as there pretty much exclusive to the platform.

For getting a 10fps increase in Need for Speed for £150 more than you can buy a PS3 / 360 for is such a moot point.

…why is so damn hard for people to have a balanced perspective?

@100 You can get a “decent” graphics card for less than £200, and it will run pretty much everything but the most graphical intensive games on the market on “high”. Your numbers are way off.

One of the reasons to own a PC though, is to play the most graphically intense games. I wouldn’t even bother starting unless I knew it would be offering a huge jump over consoles.

I wouldn’t want to build a rig, load up Metro Last Light and have it running at 20fps…

It would be like buying a Ferrari only to find it has a limiter on top speed. Of course there are other great less intensive games, but do you really think Erth or other eletists are talking about those?

Of course not, they like to wave their polygon dicks about.

  116. Christopher Jack

@112, Because they have political aspirations. Regular people can have a nice debate without resorting to anger & abuse, some people actually enjoy debating without turning it into a squabble. They even sometimes learn from it & are often capable of comprehending the opposing view. Politicians & fanatics are not. It’d make more sense if we were talking about sports where it’s understandable- even encouraged to be supportive & defencive of your side regardless of facts.

    #116 2 years ago
  117. Ireland Michael

@116 The reason to own any format over another is a simple one… the games.

It has nothing to do with the hardware or the graphics, at least not for me. I can’t rightly play World of Warcraft or Guild Wars 2 on my Xbox 360, now can I? Likewise, I would be missing out on great titles like LittleBigPlanet and Uncharted if the only thing I had was a PC.

Yeah, sure, there are some games that require stupidly high specs, but there are positively dozens of exclusives coming out every year on the PC that dont need anything but the most modest, five year old hardware to run perfectly.

If you’re platform agnostic, you get the best of both worlds. If there wasn’t game I wanted on the PC, I wouldn’t bother. But there is, so I do. Just like upgrading to a new generation of console hardware…

    #117 2 years ago
  118. deathm00n

I was a PC Gamer for 6 years, with the same PC might I add(good old Pentium D 3.0ghz lasted till last week, only added more RAM and changed GPU a lot of times). But like someone said above, If I couldn’t run the game on Ultra in the PC I felt I was missing something in the game. So I forget about PC and jumped to PS3. Instead of praying for the game to run nicely everytime I bought one, I now rest assured that everything I buy will play like it should and I won’t be left behind by some kid whose father has more money than I.

So being in both sides (was a high-end PC player for sometime, could run Crysis on Ultra with at least 40 fps) I can say, PC is for people who enjoy buying parts and changing them from time to time, as a hobby. The gameplay will be the same in both, but you can fell empowered with a PC and have small differences in graphics…

Because it is a small difference. For me graphic diffrence is PS2 X PS3. Not 12x AA X 24x AA. Ask someone who isn’t a gamer to see the difference between Xbox 360 X PS3 X PC. They will say it’s the effing same thing. And it plays the same anyway.

The day when my PC allows me to do all of the following I will take it seriously as a gaming platform:

    1) Boot up, using only a controller, straight into a unified network front-end.

    2) Have that front-end list ALL my games. Not just steam games, not just origin or whatever other service. ALL games.

    3) Have a single list of all game achievements.

    4) See all my friends listed together regardless of what they are doing.

    5) Form parties, message and chat using the front-end, regardless of whether people are gaming, browsing, doing whatever.

Steam comes close on most of those points, but it’s just one of many competing services. Consoles have everything in one place, a proper sense of community, and a level playing field in competitive play.

When there is one PC service, one PC community, one consistent front-end… then I might consider PC gaming. Not before.

I couldn’t care less if my PC plays exactly the game games as my consoles at twice the resolution or twice the framerate. That crap just isn’t important to most console gamers. Time and convenience are.

Just that in the case of the PC gamers who talk about “getting the most out of the games” would usually mean high-end machines offering the best performance and graphics. I don’t even think my machine is considered “high-end” but maybe above average, and mine was certainly more than £500, the gfx card alone was £300.

I will stand by my opinion that console gaming is currently an easier, hassle free option when it comes to gaming over the PC. Like I said, you don’t have to look far in game forums to see the variety of technical problems you can have in PC gaming.

But it’s not though is it. Not entirely.

There’s always been willy waving attached to graphics and that’s especially prevalent in PC gamers.

Hence terms PC master race, PC Eletist, twat, etc… ;)

Playing some older games is fine, but for a lot of people, to make that jump its gotta bring something a lot bigger. With PC’s that mainly comes from the scope and size of multiplayer FPS, MMO’s and of course sheer power.

If I was NvIDIA, I would actually make my next graphics card external, so you had to plug it in outside your rig.

I’d also make it look like a massive cock and all the heat sink and over clock controls would be on the shaft.

I think then a lot of PC gamers would be happy.

@121. You can put non-Steam games like Battlefield 3 onto Steam once installed. If you don’t want to add them to steam, you could just arrange a bunch of shortcuts onto your desktop or the Windows 8 start screen.

For chatting you can always use something like Skype, it’s very simple. There are also popular applications that allow you to do so from in game like Xfire.

But what you want is a monopoly on an open platform out of convenience. I’m the opposite, I enjoy having multiple ways to purchase my games. I did get Far Cry 3 Deluxe edition for $30 in it’s first week.

Also, I take it you’ve never heard of sleep mode before.

Look i agree with michael a person can enjoy all gaming experiences, and avid gamer will do that, regardless of format, manufacturer and device, thats the way it should be.

Personally i dont like PC gaming, never have been a fan and i think i never will be, for a lot of reasons i stated in the past that is not worth mentioning here as well, but i respect PC gamers nontheless and i will cheer everytime a console game goes to PC, because i know more gaming fans will enjoy more games, and that as a fellow gamer is what i want, so please be open minded and dont come here a mainly console news site to disqualify consoles just because you prefer PC, especially which such a bad nerve, i prefer a polite tone, it will make a great discussion.
p.s sorry for the topic at hand i really hope they release it on 2014, there is an strong list of ps3 games coming this year, that i think 2014 will be a sweet spot, now i really also hope that the new xbox and playstation devices launch with a very separeted date, i need to save some money to buy the new consoles, especially here in my country where they cost a lot, really a lot.

@125, Those aren’t PC gamers. Those are snotty elitists knobs. They’re the equivalent of console fanboys for the PC market. Unfortunately, just like console fanboys, they’re the *very* vocal minority.

To be fair, there are a lot of PC games that never make consoles. Like Diablo III, Rift, Guild Wars, Civ V, Starcraft, and many many more. Many PC gamers also own consoles. Consoles ain’t cheap either. And their games are often higher priced.

You can enjoy both if your lucky enough to be able to own them all.

But if you noticed there are ALOT more gamers out there claiming to be PC gamers then there used to be. Not like just one or two elitest guys. Sure those guys are still out there. But I am not like that. My PC has always been somewhat modest. I just droped a new PSU, GPU and jumped to 16G ram. Cost me lil’ over 100usd. That is less then 2 full priced PS360 games. Or a tad over one game and a season pass.

    Very reasonable.

As for the PS4…mildly excited at this point. I easily could have lived without the PS3 this gen. But I have grown to loath MS. So I will keep an eye out and see what happens. But unless they offer second screen intgration on the same level as WiiU, I am not interested enough to buy one any time soon. Maybe down the road in a few years for a cheaper price and a built library of games.

  137. OlderGamer

I thought OMD2 was on XBLA? I recently snatched that up on Steam for a few usd. And that is the other thing too…the amount of money I save because of Steam sales is crazy. It really helps narrow the price gap between consoles and PC. OMD2 for example I think I spent 3something usd. On XBLA it is likly 1200MS points(like the first one) that is 15usd. Over a 12usd savings. And that is just one game, and a lower priced one at that. I have a lot of games I have bought for less then 5usd. Playing NFS Hot Persuit, again I paid 3something usd.

But yeah I am not trying to seem like an eletist jerk. I am just saying that not all PC gamers are focused on the extreme high end. My PC is somewhere in the middle. And I still own and enjoy consoles(just like Erth does, btw).

Alot of console gamers have a misconception or two about PC gaming. All I am saying.

    #137 2 years ago
  138. ManuOtaku

#138 no OG, is not on XBLA, and i think there is no plans to bring it, torchlight 2 might come for 720 though, or i hope, i did like torchlight a lot.

As for steam, i understand that people save money, but to tell you the truth i dont want that to become the standard or the only way of delivery in the future for games, i want to control the access of the game or data on a X device, without an account or always connected network for all my games, i understand for a few games yes, but the games i love or like, i do want them to be available at my own accord, without an external control, like with physical or free PSN/XBLA, like i said i understand people like this idea, but i dont want it to become the only way of distribution for the future, it is not healthy for a consumer standpoint of view IMHO.

    #138 2 years ago
  139. Ireland Michael

@139 I doubt we’ll see Torchlight 2 on anything but PC. Most publishers learn their lessons after using the Xbox Live Arcade for the first time, and have the sense not to go back.

There are even Big Picture modes from the likes of VALVE.

@Fackzooks, I love that smell of shiny bullshit. That’;s why I will absolutely comment to that shit.

“1) Boot up, using only a controller, straight into a unified network front-end.”

you can do that with Mac or a PC.

“2) Have that front-end list ALL my games. Not just steam games, not just origin or whatever other service. ALL games.”

Jesus Christ. Main Folder – Games

    Retards these days.

“3) Have a single list of all game achievements.”

Choose your system “Origin, Steam” andf stick to it.

“4) See all my friends listed together regardless of what they are doing.”

Skype, MSN, whatever. (skype will be in the next gen Xbox because Xbox Live chat is outdated already)

    5) Form parties, message and chat using the front-end, regardless of whether people are gaming, browsing, doing whatever.”

    skype, Steam chat. Oh geez.

As I said earlier. Disabled people.

PC gaming definitely is good, but consoles have certain advantages which make them a more popular choice. I myself spent most of the gaming time of pc until 2-3 years ago.
Console will remain a major market because its just a more cohesive gaming experience imo. Its just like a pc, but talior made for gaming.
Consoles are set to become even better proposition imo. Sony will probably showcase games like Planetside 2 , maybe even Everquest next on ps4. Games like Dust 514 shows that at least sony is willing to open their structure to allow devs better facilities and self-publishing is also a good thing.
I will definitely return to pc gaming next-gen, as I will buy a good pc soon. Really excited for ps4+pc combine. But first I have to finish my massive ps3 backlog.

I want to be “that Console fanboy guy” for a while and make some bullshit points about consoles. Here it goes:

The day when my Consoles allows me to do all of the following I will take it seriously as a gaming platform:

    1) Speak to me like SIRI does

    2) Play Only Andgry Birds

    3) Will be just a service without a box

    4) To have an option like in “Teamspeak3″ to “Poke people” with additional information where you can write: “console gamers are disabled people”

    5) More 12 year old kids playing Halo, Call Of Duty

    6) A lot of Sport channel and other unnecessary bullshit that no one needs.

I couldn’t care less if my console plays exactly the same games as my smartphones at less the resolution or less the framerate. That crap just isn’t important to me as a Real console gamer. Brothers unite. Time and convenience are. Angry Birds FTW.

@Dragon246, “PC gaming definitely is good, but consoles have certain advantages ”

enlist them. I want to hear these advantages. Also, consoles are not the most popular choice. Xbox 360 and PS3 userbase is 140 million so far at best with Wii + 80-90m. Need I to remind how much PC’s sold each year and how much services it has like Steam, Battle.net that has millions of users?

    #143 2 years ago
  144. OlderGamer

I hear what your saying Manu. I like that I can still slap in NES, TG16, NeoGeo, Saturn, PS2 games and play them. But what I have been noticing is that my old systems have started to wear out. I just recently tossed out a PS2 and a Dreamcast. I can easily find replacments at this point. But will there be a day when replacing a Dreamcast is like replacing a Neo Geo AES(hundreds of usd)?

I don’t mind having my libary digitaly and in one place. I have learned that games are really about playing current games. I still like the retro stuff too like I said, but as much as I loved the Turbo Duo(TG16), I don’t play it very often. And truth be told, I would rather buy a WiiU HD version of the game or two that I do still actualy want to play from that system. I am ok with that.

But I can fully understand where you are coming from. Esp where you need a ISP to get to your games. If I had to suddenly go without my ISP for a long period of time, I would prolly have to go back a gen or so to play games. So much focus online, so much DLC, so many online checks, DRM checks, authenticators, etc…

Just kind of of the way it is nowadays.

    #144 2 years ago
  145. Ireland Michael

@143 There are undoubtedly tonnes of great downloadable titles on XBLA, I won’t discount it that, but Microsoft have some utterly idiotic practices in places.

There have been dozens of horror stories by developers regarding the service – like the fact that Microsoft dictates the release date of games and not the publisher, the frustratingly long approval process, having to pay Microsoft exorbitant costs to patch games, etc, etc. The sales rarely justify the cost, and 9 times out 10, the stuff sells far better on PC anyway.

#144 Earthazus, theres some people that dont like the mouse and keyboard configuration for gaming, gamepads controllers even if they are less accurate, i dont know it because i never have been a PC gamer, but assuming the worst case escenario here, the gamepad is more comfortable, at least under the gaming glasses, i am really sick of mouse and keybord from work just to bring it to my favorite hooby too, for me it seems like a work an a core, i want that really far away from my hobby.

Besides that i dont want to check forums on the internet in order to solve any given issues with PC that arises during its use, i dont have the free time, i prefer plug and play something that consoles give, thats also why iam still buying CD, dvd for music and anime, i dont want to spend my time dowloading and finding what i need to do in order to do it, while i can do or enjoy my hobbies sitting in my couch bed playing games.

To sum things up theres a lot of valid reasons for people to not like or want gaming on PC and for that consoles are the better options, like i understand there is also the other side of the coin, people that the options of PC are more attractive, neither of which has to do with one of those groups being disabled people.

About forums. PC’s these days are so advanced that you don’t need to check forums or fix anything. If you have decent hardware (not some suer ellite stuff from THERMALTTAKE ARMOR) it should work fine as it is.

I can only imagine the reaction everyone would have if what they’re doing here turns out not to be the PS4. I wouldn’t be surprised if that turns out to be the case, but seeing as how the last meeting held unveiled the Vita (or NGP as it was being called at the time), and Sony itself is in a bit of financial dire straights, and could use some excitement around its brand, PS4 seems like a pretty safe bet. Though I have to say, I thought 2012 was a down year, but still a great year none the less. It truly showed now is a great time to be a gamer, as we’re getting games that are pushing both consoles to their very limits (as well as PC’s), while at the same time, laying an inkling towards the future. Speaking of that, if it turns out to be the PS4, I hope they have some great games to show off with it, and not just tech demo’s, though if this is not the case, they better be some pretty damn good tech demo’s, not like that one Phil Harrison did during the PS3′s unveil at E3 2006.

    #156 2 years ago
  157. Erthazus

“too bad that not all the PC games support gamepads”

    All of them support gamepad.

There is a software that allows you to connect any controller you want “PS3′s, Xbox’s” old controllers, Wii and any stuff you want (Any controller on the market that has USB in it) and you can customize macros on it.

How it works: You just choose the buttons from a keyboard and move them to your controller in that software. Program shows you how to do it. It’s really easy and you do it only ONCE in your life just to be sure that you like that combination and that you will stick to it. (you can always change it anyway.)

and you can play every game on your PC with a controller even if your PC game will say to you: “I hate controllers”. It does not matter because your controller will emulate your keyboard buttons. :d

It requires 5 minutes of research and that’s it. You are done.

No, you do not understand. Every reply you make further reinforces that.

The discussion you so rudely butted in on with your incorrect assumptions was never about ‘X sucks, Y rules’. I wouldn’t expect someone like you to be able to identify a non-polar discussion anyway.

The discussion was why the majority of console gamers do not see the PC as a viable gaming platform.

You should try doing a tech support role for a week to end users. Your outlook would change. That is guaranteed. To someone who has not grown up using PC’s, the interface and terminology are an utterly impenetrable barrier.

Because you cannot see the barrier from a non-technical person’s perspective, you cannot understand the issues, so you just fly off into a contradictory rage with a barrage of childish insults and ‘no, YOU suck’ comments.

PC gaming has changed a lot over the last 8 years or so. Okay, I’m more on the high end, but gaming is a lot easier than it used to be. Most games are download, install, and play. Not a lot of tinkering needed. Just as simple as putting a disk in/downloading, install, and playing on my PS3/X360. Need to update video drivers every so often. Downloading and installing is no harder than anything else on your computer.

I have my computer attached to my 42″ LCD TV with an HDMI cable with full audio support so I get my sound through the home theater. I have a Logitech wireless keyboard/touchpad ($40). I have wireless X360 controllers (wireless adapter $10). Seriously, it takes only three clicks of the mouse to change from my monitors to my TV through the Nvidia control panel.

I can play my tradition PC games and FPS with my wired M&K and games I think play better with a controller like Assassin’s Creed or Super Meat Boy with a gamepad. I really get the best of both worlds.

This late in such a long cycle, if you don’t have both PS3 and X360 and checking out indie exclusives or free to plays on the PC that any low-mid spec PC can handle, you are probably in the minority of core gamers. I find if you are hating on one platform or another, you are also probably missing out on a lot of great gaming experiences.

For casual gamers, they will go with whatever is comfortable for them, be it tablet or console or whatever. Trying convenience them how easy it is on PC now has been the hard part. That is what Valve has been trying to do.

For those that think with Steam you have to always be connected, there is an Offline mode.

Now, Chivalry had a nice update so it is time to get medieval on some peeps. I’m so terrible at it, yet it is so fun.

But (and there is always a but) you have to know a bit about the subject to be able to google in the first place.

Thing is, you and I know that language. We can find answers. It’s not so easy to find even simple answers in a different language.

Looking out from our ‘experience bubble’(TM) can say ‘pfft, its easy stuff’. From the outside it just isnt.

  169. GwynbleiddiuM

@169 So what you think you have to go through in order to have a working stable PC? I build my own rigs, always. And I wasn’t born with a natural ability to build rigs and maintain them. If you run into problems you don’t need a toolbox and fancy electronic devices, a multimeter and an oscilloscope in order to fix it you know.

It’s nothing to make such fuss over, really. You pick a decent mobo, decent CPU a decent GFX and a very stable PSU and it’s over. There are tons of website that recommend you on what components to pick and what works best with them. There are even manufactured PCs that Alienware, Asus and others have built for your convenience just like a console purchase you wont need to worry yourself with anything.

I have a pretty mainstream rig, an Asus Maximus III extreme mobo, a core i5 cpu and a XFX R5850 gfx, which I never even shutdown. 2 years now, and I didn’t shut it down unless I needed to add in a few more HDDs or RAMs.

It’s not something that some of us born with, anyone can maintain their own PC.

@169, My point was that I was on the outside. Until 7 years ago, my only considerable computing experience was playing with Age of Empires 2 & even back then it was as simple as putting the disc in, clicking installs, waiting 10 or so mins then clicking the game icon & I was playing.

I have to wonder if this is indeed true are Sony in panic mode?
I mean 3 launched less than 6 years ago which is a good bit short of the 10 year plus life they envisaged.

Yes I know all companies come out with that bull but with the momentum the 3 has been gaining over the last few years I reckon Sony would be more than happy to keep it going a good bit longer.

We all know MS got the online part of gaming on its console pretty damn good and Sony never quite managed to catch them on that throughout this gen.

So why the rush to get a new one out?
If I were to hazard a guess it would be that MS have them on the back foot and they reckon its more important to get off to a quick start this time having seen there PS2 successes quickly evaporate this gen.

For me anyway I hope its not a rush job as I reckon a lot more scrutiny will be put upon it this time with Xbox live been the benchmarker as to its online offerings.

Its a bit like looking in a mirror from the xbox ps2 days with the situation totally reversed.
I myself dont reckon MS will be lying down with there nextbox so ps4 will need to be pretty special imo.

I actually think MS will let them go ahead of theres and will be able to compare there own one for a bit of tinkering around the edges.

Interesting times ahead and quite astonishing really how situations can change from one generation to the next.

Just as a footnote, I own both and enjoy them both and would hate to see Sony or MS out of the market as the competition suits us more than them.

@172 Can you imagine if MS just left the scene for next-gen. We wouldn’t get a new PS system until at least 2016.

Exactly, which leads me to my conclusion.

yeah reask. cool that you´re back! i agree with you for the most part. posted my 2 cents here earlier. i too think ps3 still has enough steam for quite some time.
btw dusted off my ps3 for ni no kuni, gow and all that jazz…will see you online!

Yeah poly gow is looking good.
I vist the site most days but with having both consoles I find little to bitch about so just leave it to the others whilst playing any game I want to on either. :)

@172 “..which is a good bit short of the 10 year plus life they envisaged.”

Er, no. They stated a 10 year lifespan, not 10 years before they release a successor.

If you look at the previous two generations you will see that the PlayStation platforms have been supported by Sony for a number of years after their successor has launched. PS2 has only stopped production in the last couple of weeks, for example. No panic rushing going on.

The PS2′s best years were the two years after the PS3 had already been out. I suspect the exact same thing with happen with the PS3′s best years.

I am kind of in the same type of boat as poly and reask. Posting is wearing thin atm. Same old shit day in and day out. At some point it is nice to take a step back and just play the games.

I am really not very excited for either Sony or MS systems. Maybe that is not the best way to put that. I am excited about the possibilites. But the hype leading upto it…pointless. And the constant fanboy back and forth…draining. Plus I really don’t play very much on PS360 systems now. I play mostly on PC, sometimes on consoles. I just don’t see that changing.

Next gen will prolly just be the same tired and worn out franchises that I am bored of now…but with graphical upgrade that will have little or no impact on me because my PC already does 1080p+ at 60fps, yada yada.

So it kind of leaves me with “thats nice” attitude. Consolewise I am most impressed with the WiiU Gamepad then anything else I have seen or can imagine being revieled. If Sony does rethink their controlers to be WiiUlike…that would make me perk up. I don’t like the idea of smart glass and Vita to PS means very little.

So, I mean…new consoles…ok sure. Lets see em already. Going to be a long year I guess.

For what it is worth, I said sometime ago that Sony should stick with PS3. They should start packing Vita in with every new PS3. They should use Giakia to put out games that can compete with XBNXT. And yeah I know, lots of reasons why that wouldn’t work for a few people. But it would save Sony millions/billions. The next gen will driven on services. PS3 can do that now and at a price point that can compete with Nintendo and MS(and anyone else). A very expensive system with a tuff launch could be the straw that breaks the camels back for Sony.

But it is what it is. We should know more end of the monthish.

  182. Moonwalker1982

How plausible is it that this can concern the VR Glasses that Sony was interested in? That would suck…but hey maybe it’s possible.
