GTA series may go sci-fi if Rockstar has “something to say”

Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar has no objections to bringing the open-world trendsetter into the future, but only if it has a good justification.

Late last year, French site Ecrans asked Rockstar boss Dan Houser about the possibility of a futuristic GTA.

“We will do it the very second we have an idea,” Houser said, as translated by OXM.

“One of our strengths is the consistency of the game world. We’re not necessarily the best writers in the world, but we know how to write a video game.”

Rockstar has departed from its modern-day setting before, with Red Dead Redemption, but Houser doesn’t seem to think it has to lash out in all directions just because it can.

“When we decided to make a Western, it was because we knew we had something to say,” he said.

“We have no interest in going into science fiction for the sake of flying cars and laser guns. The best science fiction stories are those that speak about the human condition. So while this idea is very tempting and, by definition, anything’s possible in a videogame, we lack the essential thing for the moment: a good reason.”

Many GTA games have included a flying cars cheat code. It’s pretty aces.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is due in northern spring; new pre-order art popped up recently, so a proper release date shouldn’t be too far off now.

Would I be the only one thinking that would be a great idea (if done right)? Then again, I can’t say I’m asking for it.

If done right, of course it would be a great idea. In the hands of Rockstar, they could really come off and show their extra creative side and we could see how they interpret the future. For past games, they’ve been restricted by modern and historical settings but with something like this, they could really go off into a completely new dimension of gaming. Colour me intrigued as well, heh.

Rockstar could make a great futuristic title, but why does it have to be a GTA game? Red Dead Redemption is one of the best games to come out this generation, so why couldn’t a game set in the future stand on its own as well?

@3 – That’s a good point, I was forgetting that Red Dead was it’s own thing when making my post. Making it it’s own thing would be a better idea

They should make the game in the Cyberpunk universe. You are a cyborg and you get to upgrade your powers the way you want. You can be a melee person or a long distance camper. It obviously still needs a serious vibe and definitely flying cars.

Ubisoft beat them to it with Watch dogs when it comes to Science Fiction though. But a truly futuristic open world game could be ground breaking if developed by Rockstar.
