GTA series may go sci-fi if Rockstar has "something to say"

Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar has no objections to bringing the open-world trendsetter into the future, but only if it has a good justification.

Late last year, French site Ecrans asked Rockstar boss Dan Houser about the possibility of a futuristic GTA.

"We will do it the very second we have an idea," Houser said, as translated by OXM.

"One of our strengths is the consistency of the game world. We're not necessarily the best writers in the world, but we know how to write a video game."

Rockstar has departed from its modern-day setting before, with Red Dead Redemption, but Houser doesn't seem to think it has to lash out in all directions just because it can.

"When we decided to make a Western, it was because we knew we had something to say," he said.

"We have no interest in going into science fiction for the sake of flying cars and laser guns. The best science fiction stories are those that speak about the human condition. So while this idea is very tempting and, by definition, anything's possible in a videogame, we lack the essential thing for the moment: a good reason."

Many GTA games have included a flying cars cheat code. It's pretty aces.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is due in northern spring; new pre-order art popped up recently, so a proper release date shouldn't be too far off now.
