Ouya control pad redesigned with cross-like D-pad
A new developer blog from the Ouya team shows off changes to the Android-based console’s control pad. The most obvious change is to the D-pad, which now boasts a distinct, raised cross rather than being flatter and more disc-like. The analog sticks have been made more rubbery, the touch pad will be more sensitive, the triggers are being overhuled and the battery will soon be less likely to fall out mid-game. Ouya was Kickstarted in August to the tune of $8 million, and its first dev kits began shipping in December.
Thanks, PA Report.

Hmmm … I though Nintendo kinda had dibs on that sort of design. Hence why PS pads have what looks like 4 separate buttons and the 360 pad has it’s one and only design flaw a shitty circular d-pad. If they got round that by just haveing the cross design within a circle I wonder why MS have persisted with their crap for so long.

The newer 360 pads have a cross within a circle which can be raised or lowered.

Yeah I tried one once in a shop, the circle bit still moved with the cross, so I was a bit perplexed as to what it actually added. It didn’t feel substantially better to be honest.

Some interesting bits related to d-pads and how companies have got around the Nintendo patent issue.
