Resident Evil: Revelations – Capcom not keen on another small screen version

3DS entry Resident Evil: Revelations is coming to a whole host of new platforms, but not the Vita, because Capcom wants to bring the game to bigger screens.

“When we were developing Revelations for new platforms we really wanted to hone in on the experience you get with a large format screen, surround sound, etc,” Capcom’s Mike Lunn wrote in the comments section of the PlayStation Blog.

“This type of setup really helps players get sucked into the horror vibe and enjoy the game to its fullest extent.”

As a small screen version already exists and therefore must have been Capcom’s idea of a good time at some stage, some readers were understandably frustrated with this reply and demanded to know why a quick and dirty port is out of the question. Lunn’s comments suggest a Vita version would be expensive to develop.

“3DS and Vita infrastructure let alone developing games for them are extremely different beasts,” he answered.

“Even just the screens as you mention are completely different resolutions and functions.”

Besides, the new version of Revelations isn’t a simple port. As well as boasting new content, it’s been significantly upgraded.

“Revelations is not just a ‘filter’ slapped on the previous version. Our team literally went in and re-textured (sometimes recreated in whole) the models used for this version so rest assured it will look fantastic,” Lunn promised.

Resident Evil: Revelations is coming to PC, PlayStation 3, Wii U and Xbox 360 in May, having released on 3DS in January 2012.

    So in other words so much for that belief that the 3DS version looks and is identical to the console remake their doing. Still think it’s bull they didn’t atleast opt to do a X-buy development for the Vita Ps3 version.

    I think the Fighting games do count considering they are made specifically for the Vita. I think Capcom’s real issue is the X-Buy Sony is trying to get Devs to do for the devices. Think about it Either A. Make game X 60 bucks and identical on 2 platforms wraped in one box. or B. Make one version for 2 different platforms and Sale them at 2 different SKU’s.

    Hmmmm…. 60bucks for 1 game or 110-120 for 1 game? I think as a business decision it’s easy to figure out what Capcom is thinking. Personally I think it’s a rip off for capcom to pull such a 1 sided business deal.

    I don’t think it’s cool either, but Sony need to sort it out either way or Vita is going to keep missing stuff in the long run.

    IMO crossbuy isn’t so good. At first hand it sounds awesome to the consumer, but if its putting devs off, what’s the point?

    Sony have tried to cut into devs profits to curry favour with the consumer. It’s a dangerous game as devs will just flood to the 3DS.

    What they should do is cut the bloody hardware and memory stick price then everyone’s happy.

    Cross platform play: another short sighted business venture from Sony.

    Edit: also don’t try to make out their saints, they made me try and purchase all my PSP games again when I had a Vita… Cross buy is purely letting the devs attract customers as they can’t afford to drop the hardware price.

    Were not talking about BC now are we. We are talking about the current scheme that developers are given to distribute to their consumers. No one is saying Sony is a saint but why would you be mad in the first place if they made a more connected scheme to play on?

    You are telling me that personally you are okay with paying 60 for one game and then 50 for it again? The Same exact game? I wasn’t thrilled when Capcom did that crap with SFxT. 80 for full content on one device and 40 for full on the other? plus DLC?

    That’s something to be mad at the Developer behind. Not the hardware manufacturer. As much as people like to claim Sony is arrogant and selfish. But, that’s honestly not the case. Capcom is finding a quick way to increase their profits. Simple as that, Taking the same game they developed for a portable device and then porting an “upgraded” version on 3 other platforms?

    @6 That’s why I think the X-buy program is great for titles just like this. So you don’t have to buy the same game twice.

    But, Capcom seems to be the primary company milking their IPs on Console and Portable. They choose to instead of making these compatible software available on Like branded hardware and pushing for separate SKU’s

    What happened when Nintendo stuck with cartridge and Sony went CD? Final Fantasy and Dragons Quest went to the Playstation.

    Devs generally have loyalty to who has the biggest install base and who can they make the most money from. Greedy of course, but what else do you expect? Why was Resi cancelled on the PSP?

    Of course I prefer to share my games over devices but I’d rather have a large support for new games and pay a little big more for the privilege.

    Kingdom Hearts 3DS, Monster Hunter, Resi Evil etc…

    If Vita would’ve had a bigger install base, they wouldn’t care about ‘different resolutions and functions’ of the screen. They would’ve put manpower through it. It really is a crying shame what happens to the Vita. I bet they aren’t even willing to port MH3ultimate or MH4.

    Not the same thing at all. There is nothing wrong with the media format for Vita at all. No restrictions and no revolutionary change.

    That is also true Devs do have loyalty to larger install bases. But, if that was the reason for canceling the Psp version why migrate it to 3DS with a lower install base at the time? The psp cancellation was based on the piracy issues PSP had. The fact that they had over 5 million people playing Dissidia but only sold a million at the time. Piracy was nuts on the PSP and it wasn’t cheap to develop for PSP at the time either.

    Again, point is Capcom doesn’t care about the hardware sales. On this they care about the fact they can take Monster hunter portable 3 re-wrap it in an ultimate edition. Have 2 different skus for the product 1 for 60 and another for 50. and capitalize on revenue.

    Capcom shows this with all their software which is why they DON’T have loyalty to a single device.

    Basically 3DS vs. Vita is an almost direct repeat of DS vs. PSP so far and I can’t see that changing.

    Simple fact, handheld games shouldn’t have to cost so much to make and hardware should be cheap enough.

    3DS is really stepping up pace after its pay cut and Pokemon is round the corner. Basically Vita is fucked unless they pack-in with PS4 IMO.

    I think I got slightly mis-understood.

    Why would you want to buy the same game with no differences on the Vita and on the PS3. Why would you want both? Its a pretty niche thing I imagine, I mean its nice and all but if I want to buy a game I usually make up my mind what console to buy it on and buy that. Getting another version of the same game for another platform does’nt really affect anything.

    Of course Sony will weather the storm. Their devices are built to last 5-10 years on the market. Nintendo Handhelds only typically last 2-4 years before hardware revision or new hardware period. Sony is in it’ 2nd handheld generation. And, they don’t have the benefit like nintendo has had of being Solo on the market in the past. So what Storms have Nintendo endured?

    Game Gear? N gage? Ha those didn’t make it past a year on market before being abandoned.

    And yeah, Vita doesn’t have any piracy issues. They are woking hard but the results aren’t giving full access to the device.

    Getting the same game included in your purchase compatible on your portable device is a bad thing? Playing a game at home and continue when you leave is actually a great thing. I love it personally.

    With Capcom they are selling Monster hunter 3 ultimate with cross compatible features on Wii U and 3DS. If you want the full package they ae charging a premium. 60 on console and 50 to take your grinding on the go. I would much rather have a 60 dollar sticker for one game to take where I want and then sit at the telly to enjoy.

    Yes they do. For instance Playstation All Stars, all data transfer seemlessly through your profile. If I have a ranked up Big Daddy (currenty at 889) then when I pop on the ps3 the data,achievements, carry over. The only unusual thing is how it deals with trophies. Vita and Ps3 has different trophies and what you earn on ps3 isn’t earned on your vita and vice versa. So that is the only draw back.

    In MGS collection your saved data is added to a cloud and when you boot up on either you can get the save right from the in game loading screen.

    Considering Nintendo handhelds have been up against:

    Game Gear
    Lynx
    Lynx 2
    Nomad
    Turbo Grafix
    Neo Geo Pocket
    Wonder Swan
    PSP

    (Pretty much the history of handheld gaming the Nintendo again made popular)

    Plus numerous devices that emulate GBA and other other consoles games AND smart phones, yeah, I’d say the have done a pretty good job.

    Remember, Sony didn’t NEED to go into the handheld market, they were purely after a bit of the delicious Nintendo pie, AGAIN.

    The PSP was financed off the back of the success of PS1 and 2, idea being a portable PS2 experience.

    And, guess what, Vita was a portable PS3 experience.

    Defining marketing factor: the AAA experience to play on the bus that no one asked for…

    Hence why games like Bioshock are going AWOL.

    I would also like free games on the go. But importantly, if I can’t have that I’d just want my platform to be properly supported.

    Remember, whatever your personal feelings, this article is about Capcom NOT porting a game they easily could to Vita for whatever reason.

    As much as you dislike that, it’s a very real problem for the console.

    Kingdom Hearts has gone to 3DS as have a lot of other games I’m sure. I love the Vita as a technical achievement, but like so much of Sony’s marketing, if the support isn’t their and the price isn’t right, they can go fuck themselves.

    I sold mine for practically the same price I bought it for (had it on a good hotukdeals Asda discount). I had Uncharted, Little Deviants, Ridge Racer, and numerous PSN games…

    So glad I traded it in for the 3DS.

    I also, was pointing out it’s no surprise because of capcoms choices. So, this is not about my “personal feelings” This is about Capcom. Very simple. Also, you were an earlier adopter that just couldn’t wait. Simple as that.

    Your saying no one asked for a Console like experience? Keywords also and please remember them PS3 LIKE. Not exact, not the same. Sony has been saying Console LIKE from the beginning. Everyone else is saying they said Exactly like Ps3.

    No, no. N-Gage was on the market from 2003-06, Game Gear was like 91-96.

    I think we could all come up with theories as to why Capcom aren’t porting the game to the Vita I suspect it’s the low install base. Also, let’s remember that Capcom are no strangers to signing exclusive deals with Nintendo so maybe they still have some handheld exclusivity.

    Nintendo have always had, and always will have the handheld market cornered, their games just lend themselves to handhelds, quick games of Mario Land or Mario Kart, Star Fox or even Tetris; the Vita just doesn’t have that – it has smaller screen versions of full blown PS3 games that work really well on the big screen when dedicating time to a game but when out and about or sat on a bus a quick game of Uncharted doesn’t really work out as well as a quick blast on Mario.

    Capcom doesn’t want to release the game on handhelds again. We take a look at that. Analyze why would they say that and give theories. Why you have to turn it into a Vita vs 3DS thing? I don’t know. That’s just what you do “enter x” vs Sony and then you have a plethora of why Sony are failures to follow.

    The evolution isn’t in the “Raw Power” But the connectivity. The legitimate means of having platforms across a spectrum to communicate and share content. Now why you look solely at the raw power of it makes no sense to me.

    It’s an article regarding a fairly important issue of the Vita not recieving ports for whatever reason.

    It’s obvious the two will be compared and in situations like this, regardless of Capcoms shitty excuses, the Vita still loses out. For a platform, that isn’t good which ever way you want to look at it.

    No matter how powerful the PS3 or 360 or whatever, the pre release screenshots are always from a rendering rig… Sad really.

    Will get a PS4 eventually for exclusives but unless Sony change in a big way, I’ll never like their business style.

    Nintendo, for all it’s safe practice with software really takes risks with their hardware considering they only manufacture gaming machines. Maximum respect for that. :)

    For me, the 3DS has easily had enough games to keep me busy. Remember there’s Castlevania, Luigi’s Mansion just around the corner then Animal Crossing, Project X, Pokemon etc… Plus numerous others

    Its not about what I can or can not afford to buy its the fact that these games are available to buy somewhere else that I can not purchase. If I had the choice available I could make that decision myself. I want to play Mega Ten now, I would buy that game, its been out for over a year in the US. I want to buy a boxed version of Code of Princess with the artbook and soundtrack. I can’t unless I buy an American 3DS.

    All of the previous Nintendo handhelds were Region Free.

    How about this dipshit:

    Capcoms business model is one of the most greedy and money grabbing I have seen in recent years of gaming.

    From lazy ports, franchise changes no one wanted (Resi 5 & 6), dubious DLC on disc scandals, Capcom have shown both innovative breakthroughs and championed new IP’s (Dragons Dogma), yet at the same time showing a Luddite attitude towards other Business models.

    However, their MT Framework created in house has let them create games quickly and easily over a wide number of platforms and even create ports for handhelds and mobile devices.

    Resident Evil Revlations is due to be released on all major platforms including the PS3. For some reason Capcom has decided against a Vita release; citing its ‘already made a handheld version’ (paraphrase)

    This is quite strange. The MT Framework is easily scalable across devices? Coupled with Sony’s stellar idea of providing X Platform play (and this remake also includes co-op play) and also enabling the publisher to choose wether they want to include a cross buy feature too, it seems very strange Capcom wouldn’t want to take advantage of this and increase their profits for a minimal amount of work.

    A good Therory is that they are being greedy, something we have already outlined above (they certainly show signs of this). However, given that Capcom doesn’t have to include cross buy (A new Trails type game coming out for both the Vita and PS3 doesn’t), it seems strange they wouldn’t want to do a quick conversion from PS3 to Vita given that the Vita was advertised as a AAA gaming system on the move?

    Maybe they could include remote play for Vita? Again this has not been confirmed yet.

    Overall it’s a very strange case, only really culminating in the ideas that:

    1. Capcom don’t like easy money… Or,
    2. Porting this game to Vita is simply not worth their while given a fairly low attach rate.

    Is that better for you?

    It all boils down to the fact you only want discussion if it fits within your framework doesn’t it Lexy?
