PS4 – rumored kits have new controller, 4x Dual-Core CPU
Another piece regarding PS4 and its rumored specs and controller has gone up on Kotaku, which has culled information on Orbis from a 90-page PDF document included with development kits.

According to the report, the developer kits contain 8GB of system memory, 2.2GB of video memory, a 4x Dual-Core AMD64 “Bulldozer” CPU – which gives it 8 cores, an AMD R10xx GPU,
a Blue-ray drive, 160GB HDD, and 4x USB 3.0 and 2x Ethernet ports. The audio output is HDMI & Optical, 2.0, 5.1 & 7.1 channels.
Again, these specs are not confirmed nor are they final, if this is indeed a developer console.
The system at present supports both the Sixaxis and DualShock 3 controllers, but there is a new one in development as well, according to the documents.
Called the “Orbis Development Tool”, at present, it still sports the four face buttons, two thumbsticks and shoulder triggers, but contains a capacitive touch pad similar to the one of the back of Vita. It can discern two-point multi-touch and it can also be “clicked” for use as an additional input button.
It will also contain motion-sensing like previous controllers, but tilt correction has been improved. It also still contains vibration, and an RGB LED light. No mention of “biometric” technology was made in the documents, a feature which was rumored over the weekend.
There is also a “Share” button on the controller which Kotaku figures will allow users to share various gameplay activities via social networking sites or possibly work as a screenshot button.
However, it may have something to do with a change to the way user accounts are managed. With PS4, Sony is supposedly implementing “multi-user simultaneous logins.” This will allow more than one user to log into the console at once, linking the user account to the controller.
As the controller syncs, the player will be logged into the PS4 currently in use. Accounts won’t be “locked” to the controller, instead users will be prompted to sign in their account when an extra controller is detected.
This will make things rather easy when you go to friend’s house, plus, the purported documents claim four can be in use at a time, allowing all co-op players to receive trophies together locally. It’s unknown if this will work using PSN as well.
You can read over the entire thing through Kotaku.
Other rumors regarding PS4 can be found through here.

@ 50: It’s to keep the cost of manufacture down. Also, backwards compatibility has never really been a huge selling point.

@51: i know it never been a huge selling point, but i have around 30 PS3 original games, here in Brazil thats worth a fortune (using me only as an example). And the CELL is indeed a powerful processor, wich sony(+ other companies) own, so wouldn’t the price be lower?

@ 52: If you don’t sell your PS3, then you’ll have all the backwards compatibility you’ll need.

I sure do love discussing the boxes that play my games more than the games themselves.
Get hyped I guess. yay or whatever.

Oh come *on*, this is the most exciting part of a gen! I literally cannot *wait* for E3! I’ve not been this excited since 2005!

I hate this. I can’t explain all that well but I just detest the entire affair of rumour and bullshit.
Where are the GAMES. Its like people that get worked up over NPD figures. I kinda just want to go away for a little while and hide under a rock.
E3 is going to be hellish this year because so much of the good game news is going to vanish under the barrage of NEXT GENERATION.

@49: I dunno, are you? People who say “Hey Steph, just to let you know, there’s a mistake in the title, cheers…” are fine, but these fucking cunts that come in and say shit like “What the fuck Steph, get your shit together, can’t you even get the fucking title right?! JEEZ!” piss me off to no fucking end…
Being NOT a cunt is NOT that difficult.

@absolutezero: Come on man, tell me you wouldn’t be interested if it turned out the next xbox came with an oculus rift in the box, and the steambox had quad-core tits sticking out of the side of the controller.

@57: Dammit, I guess I better work harder at it then. Also, I <3 Steph and the rest of the team here – proper human beings, innit. Makes such a difference. Helps build community, something Pat's done very ably indeed.

Cheer up absolutezero. There’s always the DMC stories if it all gets too samey.
Not much else than DMC and the console wars, but hey, who needs it?

@59: Same here, that’s why it riles me so much when some cunt with an over-developed sense of entitlement shits all over the site.
I think we all do a pretty good job of keeping staffers on their toes whenever there are mistakes or oversights, and they always respond to it, so I feel like a part of the site myself. I don’t wanna lose that…
Anyway, as you were sir.

@ 61: “Anyway, as you were sir.”
You mean flamebaiting Erthazus? I think he’s had enough for one day, tbh. More’s the pity. I was quite proud of “dicklicker”, not had a chance to use that one in like forever.

Now this looks more promising.
8GB system memory, and finally over 2GB of video memory in a console!!! If this is true this will be epic. Finally consoles will have 2k textures and no watered down, washed out, colorless, low res blurry textures.
All to be taken with a pinch of salt though, BRING ON E3!

I was under the impression that dev kits were MORE powerful than the console, to allow for unoptimised code to run or some shit like that… Well, we’ll know soon enough I guess.

Nope… it needs more. If it comes out too son (this year, next year…) it will bring no real change or jump to the current generation.

@67
Keep dreaming if this is indeed true which I suspect it is the only thing that will change is the ram and the HD and the removal of some of the ports.

@TG,
500 aiming was done earlier by you know who here.
@68,
Looks like that, although if that raises the price above 400$, then its moot and useless.
