Showtime: PS4 rumoured at 1.84TF, Xbox 720 at 1.23TF

Thursday, 17 January 2013 14:10 GMT By Patrick Garratt

Here we go. VG247 has been told that PlayStation 4 has a 50% raw power advantage over Xbox 720, based on information out of CES.

If true, these numbers mean PlayStation 4 will have a 50% raw, computational power advantage over Xbox 720.

If latest rumours regarding next generation hardware are to be believed, the next PlayStation is to be significantly more powerful that the next Xbox.

Developer sources, speaking after meetings at CES, have told VG247 that the next PlayStation, codenamed Orbis, will have a run-capability of 1.84 teraflops. Conversely, the next Xbox, codenamed Durango, will be able to achieve 1.23 teraflops.

If true, these numbers mean PlayStation 4 will have a 50% raw, computational power advantage over Xbox 720.

While PS4 will have greater grunt that 720, however, the Microsoft machine has significantly more RAM at 8Gb, we’ve been told. Our source said that 3Gb is reserved for the OS, apps and security, leaving 4-5Gb for games.

Orbis will have 4Gb of RAM, said our source, of which 1Gb will be reserved for for OS, security and apps, leaving some 3Gb for games.

Both machines will supposedly have have the ability to read 100Gb Blu-ray discs.

Durango is apparently based on the Radeon HD 8770 GPU.

PlayStation 4 has been previously rumoured to be built on AMD’s A10 APU.

It was recently claimed that the two machines are to be announced in late March. It’s widely assumed that both consoles will launch in November this year.

VG247 is under the impression that several media outlets are in possession of documents related to Durango from CES and are currently working on major leak stories.

Interesting how this jives a little with the NowGamer source and report:

A videocard that will launch this year(8770). And how they will possibly keep the price low with such a thing? Even with its middle range it will cost at least $250-300.

  6. Zohar

If both systems are using an x86 architecture then this gives the PS4 a distinct advantage if it’s true. Then again, the RAM issue gives pause when it comes to integrating OS features while playing games and background stuff, which the 720 might have the advantage in. Very interesting.

The only thing to be sure of is the fact that the new systems are going to be producing graphical quality that is going to blow the minds of 90% of the people looking at it.

@6 We would have seen mindblowing gfx years ago if companies like Crytek and Epic were still doing games only on the PC. The mediocre hardware in the long life of the consoles slowed the gfx development to a crowl. But I am on the thesis that gfx are not so important and the industry must put more effort in the gameplay then measuring their dicks with gfxs.

Sorry but comparing the teraflops in 2013 doesn’t really make any sense.

    Especially for dedicated hardware.

    #12 2 years ago
  13. OlderGamer

I don’t know BULArmy, I agree to some point. But I think we are at the point of diminishing returns graphicly. And what I am afraid of is that super high end graphics mean super high end prices. Both in hardware but also in software, plus long dev cycles.

I think the fate of next gen won’t hinge on trip a games, but on smaller indie games that won’t be pushing graphic envelops anyways, and services. And ofc price.

    #13 2 years ago
  14. ejams

If this is true, then there could actually be a distinct difference in the type of games we see on both consoles rather than a few exclusives and similar multiconsole games like this generation. That would make owning both consoles actually worth it at some point in the future in my opinion.

    #14 2 years ago
  15. Erthazus

Teraflops means absolutely nothing. NOTHING for dedicated hardware.

8 Gb of Ram is already a much bigger advantage over PS4. Sony again did a mistake. So basically they will have a shitty OS again. 4 GB is the thing of the past, my previous PC had 8 GB of Ram and only 2-3 games used it at full capacity. The first was Metro 2033 but it’s 2013 already.

Microsoft knows exactly what will happen with their Windows Xbox OS so they upgraded it up to 8. Smart move.

Durango is apparently based on the Radeon HD 8770 GPU is actually really nice.

Sony is once again behind buying a costly CPU that will do absolutely nothing for gaming.

  16. theevilaires

LMAO I just poster in the user thread on an article from Now Gamer saying otherwise. Who cares to be honest. Its all down to the games.

    #16 2 years ago
  17. Zohar

    @10, 13

I think you’re both right. Smaller games that emphasize gameplay, story and music over eye-popping graphics are definitely getting bigger and will probably continue to grow. That said, the next Fallout/CoD/MoH/BF/Gran Turismo/Uncharted etc… those games are still gonna be the mega sellers (and the main course for console-war fanboys to argue over :P).

But I definitely don’t think we’re at the point of diminishing returns. There’s a LOT of room for improvement.

    From the NowGamer article …
“On paper both systems are capable of 3.2TFlops of data, however the Oban blitter inside the Xbox 720 increases the speed at which data is transferred, meaning the Xbox Next is actually capable of 4.2TFlops.”

Sony’s apparent determination to cram 4k into the machine is, to me, the same mistake both companies made with trying to force 1080p graphics to run on a machine that couldn’t handle it, then upscale it with crappy results. Now we’ve got games that run at sub HD resolutions and get scaled up, and some of the games that do run native 1080 look kinda crappy.

My fave game of this gen was RDR and I don’t once remember thinking, ‘If only the graphics were better’.

  49. Clupula

@45 – See for me, if the games still look like they can still done on PS3/360, there’s no reason for me to buy a new system. I’m not expecting a PS2-to-PS3 jump in graphics, but at the very least, a Saturn-to-Dreamcast jump.

    #49 2 years ago
  50. Zohar

@49 You should be expecting a PS2-PS3 quality improvement because it should be that much better or even moreso. GPU tech has gone through 4-5 generational leaps since the current gen systems came out. CPUs too.

    Using Nvidia as a reference:

7-series (PS3 uses this) this card interface precedes PCI-Express -launched in 2005

    G80 -8000 series -launched in 2006
    G92 -9000 series -launched in 2008
GT200/Tesla -GTX/GTS nomenclature started here -launched in 2008
    GF100/Fermi -4xx series -launched in 2010
    GF100/Fermi -5xx series (more of a refresh/upgrade to the 4 series)
GK100/Keplar -6xx series – current gen yet still almost a year old – launched in 2012

So you can see that graphics technology developed in 2008 was already blowing the GPU inside the PS3 out of the water.

Personally, i prefer that each console releases a year apart. This current generation proves that even though one console has a head start, the late console can be every bit as successful in the market provided their product bears quality and appeal. Granted the first to market obviously gets all the initial hype, but at a year apart, at least i get a chance to save up and affird both consoles.

@53 Might be good for you, but the year late launch (coupled with the high price) of the PS3 basically reverted Sony from the undisputed king of the console market to playing catch-up to Microsoft and still coming in trailing at the end of this gen. I think Sony believes that they -have- to be out of the gate first and Microsoft knows that their earlier launch was their boon and Sony’s doom, so there’s no way they are gonna wait.

The latest report on nowgamer which claims to blow out everything next gen is quite tough to believe. It claims that Sony’s console suffers overheating because they don’t have money to spend on R&D. Is Sony that poor?
Another thing is that the report mentions a Feb 5th reveal for PS4. It is impossible. Then it gets even more strange. Mentioning X720 to have 3 SoC chips,2 Venus and 1 Mars !?
So,I have a hard time believing those rumors.

As the next Xbo is all I’m really interested in… I would like to hear two things: 1, it is actually coming soon and 2, it can play blu-rays.

I will be happy with that.

Not sure how you measure ‘that poor’ but yeah; Sony is currently worth less than 10% of what Microsoft is. They are very poor indeed.

    #66 2 years ago
  67. DSB

@66 Yeah. But from what I’ve heard though, their gaming division is actually the most profitable part of the company at the moment, so it’s probably recieving a good bit of attention.

Everything else is doing quite poorly. Betting on 3D TVs really didn’t work out.

    #67 2 years ago
  68. DeyDoDoughDontDeyDough

@67 No, it didn’t. For shame.

    #68 2 years ago
  69. Clupula

Yes, Sony have representatives walking around Japan with coffee cups to collect spare yen to fund their machine.

You know, I don’t buy that they can’t afford R&D. They wouldn’t be making a new machine if they couldn’t afford to be making one. They’re not just going to shit out two PS3′s duct tape together and call it a new system, because they know it wouldn’t sell and they’d just be burning their money. I’m not the most technically savvy guy there is, so I don’t know much about what the technical aspects are. I do know that a lot of those less technical claims seem like bullshit.

    #69 2 years ago
  70. Clupula

Especially considering their videogame division is their only profitable division. They are going to be pumping whatever money they need into that division to keep it profitable.

    #70 2 years ago
  71. DeyDoDoughDontDeyDough

@70 But what if they can’t. I mean actually, physically can’t, as in there is no money. They already have the lowest credit rating possible, so who are they going to borrow from? Just saying.

    #71 2 years ago
  72. viralshag

@OG, Oh yeah of course, I mean if it’s too expensive I’m happy to wait for a price drop but I’m just about to sell my PS3 and I have no interest in owning more than one console next gen and the 360 has been my favourite this gen. Easy choice really.

    #72 2 years ago
  73. DSB

@69 Obviously they’re going to take a serious go at it, but I don’t think you can really underestimate the seriousness of Sony’s situation right now. The more pessimistic observers are already sounding the death knell.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20443294

I kinda feel like this is recieving too little attention in the gaming press. Sony is still one unit, and it will still go down even if that demise is due to other portions of the company.

The worst bit is that the Japanese economy is in serious trouble. It’s the worst possible conditions to face in trying to bring your company back on track.

    #73 2 years ago
  74. Sadismek

@70 I think their smartphone division is profitable, too. They generally make good phones and I’ve heard they’re in third place behind Samsung and Apple. That has to be something, right?

And yeah, those piss-poor affirmations that their R&D devision doesn’t have the money to shove an aditional 4 GB of RAM in their machine… I know Sony isn’t in a great form as of late, but come on. They know they have to come with something powerful in this next generation, unless they want to disappear.

  75. ps3fanboy

As the next Playstation is all I’m really interested in… I would like to hear these things about durango:

    1. it will not get blu-ray
    2. that low teraflops will make games crawl
    3. it will not be backward compatible
    4. it will have more in your face ads on the desktop
    5. it will have higher toll cost for xlive online gaming
    6. it will have rrod all over again for the 5 first years
    7. it will be easily hackable and online games will be a hackers buffet
    8. it will have even less exlusive titles and no support for used games
    9. it will have a higher price than other consoles on day one release
    10. kinect will be a big brother surveillance cam

I will be happy with that.

    #75 2 years ago
  76. Clupula

@71 – if they physically can’t, they wouldn’t be making a new system in a competitive market. How much money did the RROD cost Microsoft? If Sony’s finances are that bad, they’re not going to risk a similar situation. It’d cost them more than if they didn’t do the R&D. It sounds really implausible. I know there’s a whole lot of people in the media who really want Sony to go under and I get the feeling a lot of this is an attempt to give them an extra P.R. push in the direction of oblivion.

    #76 2 years ago
  77. DeyDoDoughDontDeyDough

@76 – Off the shelf parts cost less R&D moneys, custom parts cost more. According to the leak, MS is going custom and therefore squeezing more power out, Sony is going off the shelf. That’s all there is to it.

  78. Christopher Jack

People getting up in arms over rumours, it’s both hilarious & pathetic. If you round up all the rumours, you’d find so many contradictions that if you’re insane like Erthazus, your mental health would be better off if you simply wait for something official.

  79. DrDamn

    @78
Even then it’s worth waiting for some actual games. Flat specs can hide so many bottlenecks, tricks and differences that in actual use the reality can be very different. For example isn’t the Cell in PS3 capable of 2 Teraflops by itself? So PS4 is less powerful than PS3 OMG!!!!

    #79 2 years ago
  80. DeyDoDoughDontDeyDough

PS3 is 3-hundred and something gigaflops; a third of a teraflop, if I remember correctly.

  81. OlderGamer

Carefull DSB, your going to start sounding like me. I have been trying to say that Sony is in in deep trouble for a while. All it gets you is labeled a fanboy and lots of hate. For what is worth, I agree, they are in deep. PS4 will make or break them. It is all on the line.

The ironic part is that only true fanboys fail to see that.

Sure, Sony are in the worst financial position, but the PS4 will sell, just as the PS3 has.
The PS3 has outsold the 360 in Europe and the East, so hearing people decry the PS3 as a failure is honestly fucking annoying.

    #84 2 years ago
  85. theevilaires

@ DSB same thing happened to Apple. If you knew how much of a come back they would make when they were at their lowest right now and you bought 100 shares at their lowest price you wouldn’t even be on this site right now. You be on the beach in RIO with three beautiful Brazilian girls right now.

Fuck what all those reports say they just want hits to their site and fanboy arguing. If Toshiba is still around then SONY will be too. They’re going to bounce back trust me no matter how much people on here pray every night for their failure.

Last time I heard, ninty had the worst performing gaming division. They are going too?
“Only true fanboys can’t see that.”
    LOL. Like you?
Big cos don’t fall, they survive by slimming. Do you really know how market works? Both ms and sony are big enough that they will survive. Its hillarious how people think going boom is very easy.

On topic, blah blah. Ps3 guys will move on to ps4 and 360 guys on 720. I will wait for the final reveal. Unless it affects things significantly, it doesn’t matter.
About custom parts, ps3 was more custom built than 360, did it reap any significant benefits, NO. Unless you want to use next gen systems for buliding your super computer, teraflops don’t matter much in terms of numbers.
Also both can be happy, WiiU is officially knocked out of the park (spec wise).
Although I think 720 will have less power for games than ps4, simply because it has to divert some of it for kinect 2.

I just hope the last guardian makes it move over to the PS4 as a launch title. SONY really needs to focus on that launch to be as successful as possible. GT6 Prologue needs to be half way completed now and save Versus XIII for a PS4 launch too just up the graphics to next gen. Heavenly Sword 2, Uncharted 4,InFamous 3 these need to launch in the first year of the PS4.

    #91 2 years ago
  92. Erthazus

    Yeah it’s true.

PS4 is the last investment they can make. It will be a failure or a True Next Generation System.

If Sony will fail with PS4, then it’s done. Company will die like THQ.

If you don’t remember, THQ had the same issues, Sony have right now but in technology segment.

Guys, Sony lost in Japan TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP. What can be worse then that? Losing leadership in it’s own country which is very technologically advanced is basically a good death sentence.

PS4 will make or break them. We will see how it goes.

@85 Don’t remind me about Apple stock, man :P

On a personal level I like Kaz Hirai, he’s the kind of CEO I want to see in any company, but Apples rise was first and foremost a total anomaly.

It was very much the perfect storm comprised of unique competence in design, unique leadership on the business side, and both of those things coming together in an economy that was literally on coke, to the point of collapsing in a massive stroke a few years later.

Apple managed to launch a near perfect offensive at the best possible time.

Sony is in the exact opposite position, with a Japanese economy that is all but falling apart, and according to a lot of analysts, a corporate culture that has been very damaging in their ability to keep up with the competition.

Also, Apple didn’t suffer the same punishing failures that Sony has over the last few years. You have the PSP, the Vita, 3D TVs that aren’t selling, phones that can’t keep up, and that’s just to bring out the most obvious disappointments.

That all adds up to a pretty serious anchor, in a Japanese economy that is increasingly dooming a lot of its companies by default.

    Simply put, Sony isn’t Apple.

I agree. I also think Sony has always been a company that fails to communicate a proper message to the market. Even if it has a hit, they will fail at making it explode.
Things get worse when we factor the economy situation in Japan. But I believe that while economy isn’t that healthy in there. Sony is also making a bevy of unforgivable mistakes. like the price of Vita memory cards. It was flat-out stupid.
I still have a hard time believing that one console will be so much stronger than another one. Be it Micro’s or Sony’s.

@105: But 360 and PS3 ARE nearly equal? And so were those of the last generation (at least Xbox and Game Cube). People are always going to feel the need to declare all things in their life as superior. Whether it is their consoles, the way they dress, their religious faith or their country of birth. Everything HAS to be the best and only true thing, peaceful coexistence is not an option.

    At any rate… On topic:
“[...] the next PlayStation is to be significantly more powerful”.
Possibly. But is 50% really “significant”? A comparison from gaming history would have been good…
Game Cube and Xbox WERE significantly more powerful than PS2. But between the two, there was virtually no difference when it came to multi-platform titles. If I remember correctly, the Xbox version usually came out on top. Yet, the Game Cube GPU was 38% more powerful than the Xbox GPU.
Since 38% and 50% isn’t that much of a difference, I guess it would have to be more like 100% and/or one of the systems REALLY shitty to program for it to have a significant effect.

I would like it if Sony or MS went all out on launch and for the first year.

Like hitting you every month with a crazy good original game.

I know budgets have changed but I was looking back at the SNES’s first year, it was gaming nirvana. Absolutly crazy amount of kick ass games.

    Pilot Wings
    Mario World
    F Zero
    Super Tennis
    Area 88
    Super Ghouls and Ghosts
    Contra 3
    Final Fight
    Turtles in Time

It was just hit after hit. Really amazing launch.

Now big companies have there yearly role outs, COD Gears, God of War etc…

It seems like every year is the fucking same, really getting boring. Obs there are some gems too! :)

Would be nice for MS to really push the boat out and make people WANT to change over from Sony or vice versa.

Also, im hoping Nintendo will pull a 3DS with the Wii U, price cut then BAM!!! Shit loads of quality games to combat and disrupt the new gen launch.

    Everyones a winner!!! :)

  116. Mike W

Ok (for the sake for this topic) let’s say the PS4 is powerful than the Xbox 720, what does it matter? Supposedly the PS3 is a powerhouse of a machine and we kind of see that with their exclusives. But where did that power get them?

    #116 2 years ago
  117. theevilaires

^ exactly it wont matter really because no devs really took advantage of the PS3 like exclusive devs did. Except for a few criterion comes to mind.

With all this power though I better at least have custom soundtracks across all games if I want it from the OS not powered by in game option. Also Video chat while game is paused would be sweet.

Instead of arguing we need to all be putting together a wish list of features we want them to include in these new consoles.

I want “NO” facebook and twitter integration in any way shape or form. keep that garbage on PC’s not on game consoles.

o yes just like the PSY3′s cell CPU is faster then the xbox chip!!!
how did that work out ? RAM(512 + 10 MB) & GPU (at the time the gpu was the only chip to use Unified Shader Model) this is what makes a great system!!!! WE will see?

    #118 2 years ago
  119. OlderGamer

Console specs are like racecars. You can have the most powerful car/console on the track/market but if you don’t have a large enough gas tank/amount of RAM you won’t be able to compete.

Raw power is nice. But memory is more important. Obviously you have to be close powerwise, a gokart can’t compete with a GT car. But you get the idea. Like my wife always says(she is in IT field) your only as fast as your slowest component(there is always a bottleneck somewhere). But if I was designing a system, I couldn’t put enough memory in it to make me happy.

    #119 2 years ago
  120. xino

    sounds retarded for PS4.

WTF IS flops!? computing power? so what?
bloody Sony removed Other OS, now making it a console.
PSN SEN Online, you can’t even access the site with Ubuntu, Sony seriously hates anything to do with Linux.

I might have to stick with Xbox 720 next year.

wtf? what will devs do with 3gb Ram for games?

    #120 2 years ago
  121. ps3fanboy

GODDAMN IT SONY WE NEED MAR RAM!! U GONNA DO SAME MISTAKE AS LAST TIME??

    #121 2 years ago
  122. theevilaires

^ no they wont Microsoft will make sure there isn’t any RROD issues this time and SONY will put memory properly in the system. Its just gonna come down to the features and games and we “ALL” already know who has the upper hand in that field.

If any of the past rumors are true, the next xbox will need 8 gigs minimum just to run all that bloatware they have installed.

And if this rumor is true, its proved my point. Over 1/3 of the ram reserved for the xboxs OS, verus 1/4 for PS4.

The truth is, for me anyway, I dont care about anything other than gaming. Yea Netflix integration was nice, but I couldn’t care less about TV / Music services, Kinect (or other), social networking, etc. I want a gaming console that plays games at eye blistering graphical quality.

But, at the end of the day it doesn’t matter. If the PS4 is 75% more powerful (or vice versa), we will only see a handfull of exclusive games that take advantage of that extra juice. The rest will look identical.

I’ve been waiting so goddamn long for a next gen console I will probably buy the first one that comes out anyway.

  125. OlderGamer

“And if this rumor is true, its proved my point. Over 1/3 of the ram reserved for the xboxs OS, verus 1/4 for PS4.”

  126. MegaGeek1

Yea that could be true. Anything that optimizes my gaming experience is welcome. I just have this feeling that Microsoft is going to cram Windows 8 and whole slew of tablet, smartphone, tv, cross platform functionality thats is going to really dilute my gaming experience.

Sony could be going that way as well. Only difference is that Sony doesn’t have a failing OS out right now. Either way I hope I’m wrong. I want a sexy beast of a gaming system, nothing else.

I’ll take that with a grain of salt. The supposed memory disparity between 720 and PS4 doesn’t seem to reconcile with the “raw computational power” of the PS4. Unless Microsoft is putting an extra few gigabytes in there for no reason (or some other sophisticated function(s), I think that would create a serious bottleneck for the PS4.

I think Microsoft had the best opportunity to unify laptop computers and tablets together with Surface. The versatility of tablets + all the functions that a PC can do = Total WIN.

I’m not so keen in tablets because they get the job half done, but surface in the other hand is an all-in-one solution. If they can make it more powerful and less expensive I could consider getting one…

It’s funny because I remember hearing the exact same thing about the PS3 vs the 360. I bought my PS3 expecting to have my mind blown. I’m still waiting for that to happen. Sure, technically the PS3 is a more powerful machine. Too bad all that power doesn’t mean anything when cross platform games run better on the Xbox.

Granted, the PS3 took a gamble with its cell architecture and we know how that turned out. We’re comparing apples to oranges really when comparing the PS3 and the Xbox 360. However if the next-gen consoles use similar architectures, then it becomes an apples to apples comparison, in which case we might actually have something to talk about.

Bottom line? Let me know when we have some real information to go from, and then we can start this discussion again.

    @137

RAM is hella important. Lots of devs asking for at least 8gb (Check Crytek, EPIC etc…)

With so much quick access going on between the OS and media, which is obviously going to happen next gen, the more the better.

If PS4 has 4gb and releases in a years time, it’ll roughly have the same amount as the next gen of mobiles and tablets.

A great leap over the PS3 but what about the 10 year cycle this time.

Media features are only going to become more and more power draining.

You don’t want the equivelant of the cross game chat and Skyrim scenerio’s 3 years into the PS4′s life now do you?

If MS can get an ‘Apple like’ experience with the Xbox OS, smooth, quick access to apps, media etc…

It’ll blitz the competition, game over man… Game over…

Plus the touted Fable MMO means they are seriously thinking about that space in a big way.

Could be a one horse race really.

So both console won’t be much that powerful than Wii U.

The 720 twice more powerful and the Orbis 3 times more powerful.

I’m wondering if the 8 GB of RAM is part of a UMA design or they’ll have dedicated VRAM? If UMA then remove at least another 1 GB of RAM.

@141 Both 360 and PS3 are already more powerful than Wii-U.

From the rumours so (so plenty of salt required) it looks like both systems will have unified memory.

PS4 seems to have faster memory, 720 has more. The net effect should be similar, with faster memory being offset by the streaming and decompression needed to compensate for less asset memory.

MS are also going with an edram frame buffer. Hopefully enough for a full antialiased 1080p frame with no tiling.

They missed a trick this gen with that 10mb edram. If they had fitted enough for a 720p 4xMSAA frame things would have been very different.

The most interesting thing about the specs for me will be how much of the system memory they will throw at the OS and the interface. I’d love to see the time it takes for my PS3 to show me the dashboard/trophies/who’s online to diminish or disappear altogether. I’d also love to see load times in-game disappear if possible.

It occurred to me recently that the amount of time I spend waiting for loads in my games is significant…

It seems to me that Microsoft is up to something, you see 8GB of RAM makes me think they wanna run Windows on their console or a very optimized OS based on Windows 8 for it. It might even run compatible PC games if you pay them through their store. Well that is how it looks to me anyway.

I for one think making console-wars arguments is futile based on hardware spec alone. Sony had put great hardware tech in PS3 and it had the better build quality compare to Xbox 360′s (RRoD), but the flaws of PS3 for me as a consumer was within the very limited OS. PSN got better over time but the OS is truly where PS3 suffered this gen. That’s my opinion of course. It was decent and responsive enough but it was very limited.

PS: Before Sony fanboys unleash themselves, I actually am a PS3 owner, I owned an XBOX 360 until it died on me and I enjoyed my PS3 quiet frankly more than my Xbox.

@145 Yes, MS really missed it this gen with that 10 MB edram buffer. Such a great idea but so poorly executed. I agree with you, if they had fitted enough for a 720p 4xMSAA frame things would have been very different.

    @148

    Well ain’t that a thang.

You know your shit. MS will surely push the full force of their dollar penis down Sony’s throat this time though surely?

You know, to kill them off?

Money is there and media control for 2015+ will get pretty ugly.

I mean, by that time, your living room will be fucking sponsored by someone….

Gaming or no gaming, I just can’t see Sony keeping up.

    #150 2 years ago
  151. Erthazus

MS is indeed in a much better position. After Windows 8 sales success (let’s not talk about it’s quality. MS made tons of money), their gaming division should receive the best support as possible from big 3.

I don’t see Sony keeping up in next gen area with Microsoft in hardware, OS or Software.

Some people say that their gaming division has an advantage, but that is subjective. For example my favourite games from Sony are inFamous series and Uncharted. It’s their first party titles, but infamous didn’t sell well and Uncharted is the only game that did well + GT5 as their system seller.

Remember PS Vita? That thing launched with Uncharted:GA and no one bought the system and Uncharted was a good handheld quality game.

What’s left for Sony? Killzone? Shitty shooter and okay sales. PASBR? Failure. MAG? 1 million sales and poor reviews and etc. Their gaming division is not that great to be honest (compare Sony’s division with Take 2/Ubisoft or EA in terms of sales and you can see the picture) and i’m not sure about third party support. They just don’t have money to do that.

and what Sony can do actually? Metal Gear Solid 4 was their trump card third party support that worked very well and sold really great. What now? Hideo Kojima makes games for both consoles. Remember E3 2008? Microsoft ensured that future Metal Gear Solid titles will come to XBOX too. Final Fantasy? It’s coming for XBOX too FFXIII Versus is a vaporware and maybe will be released in PS4 as a launch title.

Sony can’t keep up. There is nothing that they can do. They are weaker then ever. They should retire and make games for all platforms like EA and others. It’s not going to be costly for them.

    #151 2 years ago
  152. GwynbleiddiuM

@150 Maybe, But I think gaming consoles in the traditional sense are just at the end of their journey, next-gen might very well be the last gen of traditional gaming machines. I think in a 5 to 10 year cycle, we wont need expensive topnotch gaming machines to run our games for us. We are heading toward an “on-demand services” kind of future if the acquisition of Gaikai and On-Live are any indication. Future consoles can be small boxes like Steam box and SHIELD that don’t really need demanding technology in them to run our games. It’s just the latency and the way of content delivery that are posing challenges to overcome.

    #152 2 years ago
  153. monkeygourmet

    @152

    Of course you are right.

But it comes down to who’s got the big bucks and service power to fund this gaming and media change…

  154. Belmont

    @151
I don’t know what makes everyone believe that Sony won’t be able to keep moving. GT5 had some “dissapointed” reviews-Is there a single game with which some people aren’t disappointed?-But it moved close to 10 million copies. Then UC3 has sold really well and some other examples.PS3 is selling as well as X360(if not better,as in EU)so I’m sure they have enough money to keep up with MS.
And regarding Sony’s gaming division,It is simply great and only occasionally beaten by Ninty. Micro has Forza,Halo and Gears and that’s it. Sony has LBP,GoW,Uncharted,Killzone,GT,Resistance and so on.

I feel like most people haven’t fully read the article, but if M$ really uses almost 3GB ram out of 8GB for gaming you can’t just go ahead and compare 8 to 4, you compare 5 to 3, which is a whole other level. (Also raises the question what kinda bloated OS they use, Vista? XD)

Lets not forget that the whole OS, security, “apps” also need CPU Power etc and if that Aspect is just as bloated as their Ram usage, then that 50% difference MIGHT (big might here people) become quite a lot bigger than 50%.

Obviously without official Specs all we all do here is taking shots at the dark, but ye there’s more than just your available RAM.

  156. Dragon246

    @154,
“I don’t know what makes everyone believe that Sony won’t be able to keep moving.”
Because they want to believe that, you know the make believe world.
At the end, cheaper console would have the advantage. If cramping more hardware results in costlier system, then that’s a mistake. Of course, I take all this with a pinch of salt.
One place where MS can beat sony is by taking more losses on hardware, although I don’t think it would be worthy enough to do that. 360 was cheaper than ps3, but still ps3 will take the lead. Sony must target 400$ or less (which they would do probably) and they have a very good chance of leading next-gen again.

    @154

It’s funny really, I’ve never seen a generation where the fans and media wanted to see the demise of a console manufacturer. I lie, I think the same thing happened when the Gamecube was on the market. Anyway, it’s sad and pathetic when you really look at it.

I remember not to long ago, the media and the fans were writing-off Nintendo, because of the poor performance it did with the Gamecube and they didn’t even want to acknowledge the Wii and well……. we all seen how that turned out.

So in short, we will have to wait and see. You really can’t listen to a couple of dickheads that have no idea what they’re talking about, even if it’s the media. This is not a jab at you PG, but there’s entirely to many media outlets that spew pure nonsense, whether it be about MS, Nintendo or Sony.

Guys this is just a rumor, so all these speculations and predictions are pointless.

since when windows 8 sales good… I consider windows 8, like vista…I would never put them on my PC.

I really doubt about the xbox gpu 8xxx series. This is fake, as 8xxx series is not even out for the public yet and it will cost FULL retail for microsoft to use this gpu! they are not crazy. They will have to sell it for about 600-700 euro for about 2 years without a price drop… u mad?

The most extreme gpu, ms and sony may use, is 6xxx series.

  159. hellhammer

This is all just speculation anyways, why do people get up in arms over rumored tech specs and sheets? Until something is officially announced none of this matters.

and even once it is announced, tech specs don’t win the game, power rarely wins in the console wars.

Im not trying to prove anyone wrong and I cant wait to get my new XBOX unit but lets not connect Win8 and the new system because Win8 is extremely far from successful. Microsoft themselves have been caught off guard with the lack of interest to the OS. This is what the analysts are saying:

Initial signs aren’t that favourable. Early numbers about PC sales show there hasn’t been any uptick since the launch of Windows 8 — in fact, sales have dropped considerably since the same period last year. And this is during the normally lucrative holiday sales season.

It’s way too early to use the word “flop” to describe Windows 8, but it’s pretty clear the new operating system for Windows machines isn’t performing as well as Microsoft would like. It’s a powerful interface, but it has a relatively steep learning curve, and the benefits — right now, with a limited app catalogue — are finite.

    #160 2 years ago
  161. TheLegendaryLegacy

MS is not in a better position. They are very close cause MS has windows 8 and Sony just passed MS in console sales. But even then I like both in my opinion. The one thing that bothers me is that its said that The Durango has double memory for use, in truth it says that half is used for the system itself. So at the end it has one more gigabyte for gaming use.

    @155, oh the irony.

Quote- “I feel like most people haven’t fully read the article, but if M$ really uses almost 3GB ram out of 8GB for gaming”

MS uses 3GB out of 8 for the OS, Sony uses 1 out of 4 for its OS leaving 3GB for gaming.

  163. DoomGiver

Sony said the PS3 was capable of 2.0 TFLOPS, twice the power of Xbox 360 which was supposedly rated at 1.0 TFLOPS, that’s double the TFLOP performance, but did games look 2x better on PS3? actually most of the time the 360 outperformed the PS3 with the most demanding engine of all time “Cysis” doing better on 360.

Conclusion, TFLOP performance means very little. Imo, Ram is very important, imagine what developers could do with the old 360 if they had more ram, their no. 1 complaint. Anyone following console history knows that Ram has Always been the problem in the long run.

    #163 2 years ago
  164. Kaufer

#163 That is BS. Neither the 360 or PS3 are capable of 1 TFLOP. Epic games put the 360 at 250 GFLOPS as in giga when they presented whats the minimum for UE4.
