Showtime: PS4 rumoured at 1.84TF, Xbox 720 at 1.23TF
Here we go. VG247 has been told that PlayStation 4 has a 50% raw power advantage over Xbox 720, based on information out of CES.

If true, these numbers mean PlayStation 4 will have a 50% raw, computational power advantage over Xbox 720.
If latest rumours regarding next generation hardware are to be believed, the next PlayStation is to be significantly more powerful that the next Xbox.
Developer sources, speaking after meetings at CES, have told VG247 that the next PlayStation, codenamed Orbis, will have a run-capability of 1.84 teraflops. Conversely, the next Xbox, codenamed Durango, will be able to achieve 1.23 teraflops.
If true, these numbers mean PlayStation 4 will have a 50% raw, computational power advantage over Xbox 720.
While PS4 will have greater grunt that 720, however, the Microsoft machine has significantly more RAM at 8Gb, we’ve been told. Our source said that 3Gb is reserved for the OS, apps and security, leaving 4-5Gb for games.
Orbis will have 4Gb of RAM, said our source, of which 1Gb will be reserved for for OS, security and apps, leaving some 3Gb for games.
Both machines will supposedly have have the ability to read 100Gb Blu-ray discs.
Durango is apparently based on the Radeon HD 8770 GPU.
PlayStation 4 has been previously rumoured to be built on AMD’s A10 APU.
It was recently claimed that the two machines are to be announced in late March. It’s widely assumed that both consoles will launch in November this year.
VG247 is under the impression that several media outlets are in possession of documents related to Durango from CES and are currently working on major leak stories.

I’m hoping this E3 is one to remember. I’m hoping both systems are damn near equals and the reason I say that, is because this current gen has created the most ignorant, foolish fans I’ve witness in any gaming generation ever. The way the Xbox 360 fans attack the PS3 fans (and vice versa) was pure ignorance.

@101, Yes. Not an issue at all with 4GB of Ram and decent processor with 1.84TF.
+ it’s a console. It’s going to be optimized for PS4 as much as possible.
That’s going to be interesting if Planetside 2 will be in next gen console. Maybe Sony will FINALLY announce Everquest III for PC, PS4. That would be neat.

As the next Playstation is all I’m really interested in… I would like to hear these things about durango:
1. it will not get blu-ray
2. that low teraflops will make games crawl
3. it will not be backward compatible
4. it will have more in your face ads on the desktop
5. it will have higher toll cost for xlive online gaming
6. it will have rrod all over again for the 5 first years
7. it will be easily hackable and online games will be a hackers buffet
8. it will have even less exlusive titles and no support for used games
9. it will have a higher price than other consoles on day one release
10. kinect will be a big brother surveillance cam
I will be happy with that.

@105: But 360 and PS3 ARE nearly equal? And so were those of the last generation (at least Xbox and Game Cube). People are always going to feel the need to declare all things in their life as superior. Whether it is their consoles, the way they dress, their religious faith or their country of birth. Everything HAS to be the best and only true thing, peaceful coexistence is not an option.
At any rate… On topic:
“[...] the next PlayStation is to be significantly more powerful”.
Possibly. But is 50% really “significant”? A comparison from gaming history would have been good…
Game Cube and Xbox WERE significantly more powerful than PS2. But between the two, there was virtually no difference when it came to multi-platform titles. If I remember correctly, the Xbox version usually came out on top. Yet, the Game Cube GPU was 38% more powerful than the Xbox GPU.
Since 38% and 50% isn’t that much of a difference, I guess it would have to be more like 100% and/or one of the systems REALLY shitty to program for it to have a significant effect.

I would like it if Sony or MS went all out on launch and for the first year.
Like hitting you every month with a crazy good original game.
I know budgets have changed but I was looking back at the SNES’s first year, it was gaming nirvana. Absolutly crazy amount of kick ass games.
Pilot Wings
Mario World
F Zero
Super Tennis
Area 88
Super Ghouls and Ghosts
Contra 3
Final Fight
Turtles in Time
It was just hit after hit. Really amazing launch.
Now big companies have there yearly role outs, COD Gears, God of War etc…
It seems like every year is the fucking same, really getting boring. Obs there are some gems too!
Would be nice for MS to really push the boat out and make people WANT to change over from Sony or vice versa.
Also, im hoping Nintendo will pull a 3DS with the Wii U, price cut then BAM!!! Shit loads of quality games to combat and disrupt the new gen launch.
Everyones a winner!!!

Ok (for the sake for this topic) let’s say the PS4 is powerful than the Xbox 720, what does it matter? Supposedly the PS3 is a powerhouse of a machine and we kind of see that with their exclusives. But where did that power get them?
#117
theevilaires
17/01/13, 7:38 pm
^ exactly it wont matter really because no devs really took advantage of the PS3 like exclusive devs did. Except for a few criterion comes to mind.
With all this power though I better at least have custom soundtracks across all games if I want it from the OS not powered by in game option. Also Video chat while game is paused would be sweet.
Instead of arguing we need to all be putting together a wish list of features we want them to include in these new consoles.
I want “NO” facebook and twitter integration in any way shape or form. keep that garbage on PC’s not on game consoles.

Console specs are like racecars. You can have the most powerful car/console on the track/market but if you don’t have a large enough gas tank/amount of RAM you won’t be able to compete.
Raw power is nice. But memory is more important. Obviously you have to be close powerwise, a gokart can’t compete with a GT car. But you get the idea. Like my wife always says(she is in IT field) your only as fast as your slowest component(there is always a bottleneck somewhere). But if I was designing a system, I couldn’t put enough memory in it to make me happy.

WTF IS flops!? computing power? so what?
bloody Sony removed Other OS, now making it a console.
PSN SEN Online, you can’t even access the site with Ubuntu, Sony seriously hates anything to do with Linux.
I might have to stick with Xbox 720 next year.
wtf? what will devs do with 3gb Ram for games?

If any of the past rumors are true, the next xbox will need 8 gigs minimum just to run all that bloatware they have installed.
And if this rumor is true, its proved my point. Over 1/3 of the ram reserved for the xboxs OS, verus 1/4 for PS4.
The truth is, for me anyway, I dont care about anything other than gaming. Yea Netflix integration was nice, but I couldn’t care less about TV / Music services, Kinect (or other), social networking, etc. I want a gaming console that plays games at eye blistering graphical quality.
But, at the end of the day it doesn’t matter. If the PS4 is 75% more powerful (or vice versa), we will only see a handfull of exclusive games that take advantage of that extra juice. The rest will look identical.
I’ve been waiting so goddamn long for a next gen console I will probably buy the first one that comes out anyway.

Yea that could be true. Anything that optimizes my gaming experience is welcome. I just have this feeling that Microsoft is going to cram Windows 8 and whole slew of tablet, smartphone, tv, cross platform functionality thats is going to really dilute my gaming experience.
Sony could be going that way as well. Only difference is that Sony doesn’t have a failing OS out right now. Either way I hope I’m wrong. I want a sexy beast of a gaming system, nothing else.

I’ll take that with a grain of salt. The supposed memory disparity between 720 and PS4 doesn’t seem to reconcile with the “raw computational power” of the PS4. Unless Microsoft is putting an extra few gigabytes in there for no reason (or some other sophisticated function(s), I think that would create a serious bottleneck for the PS4.

I think Microsoft had the best opportunity to unify laptop computers and tablets together with Surface. The versatility of tablets + all the functions that a PC can do = Total WIN.
I’m not so keen in tablets because they get the job half done, but surface in the other hand is an all-in-one solution. If they can make it more powerful and less expensive I could consider getting one…

It’s funny because I remember hearing the exact same thing about the PS3 vs the 360. I bought my PS3 expecting to have my mind blown. I’m still waiting for that to happen. Sure, technically the PS3 is a more powerful machine. Too bad all that power doesn’t mean anything when cross platform games run better on the Xbox.
Granted, the PS3 took a gamble with its cell architecture and we know how that turned out. We’re comparing apples to oranges really when comparing the PS3 and the Xbox 360. However if the next-gen consoles use similar architectures, then it becomes an apples to apples comparison, in which case we might actually have something to talk about.
Bottom line? Let me know when we have some real information to go from, and then we can start this discussion again.

RAM is hella important. Lots of devs asking for at least 8gb (Check Crytek, EPIC etc…)
With so much quick access going on between the OS and media, which is obviously going to happen next gen, the more the better.
If PS4 has 4gb and releases in a years time, it’ll roughly have the same amount as the next gen of mobiles and tablets.
A great leap over the PS3 but what about the 10 year cycle this time.
Media features are only going to become more and more power draining.
You don’t want the equivelant of the cross game chat and Skyrim scenerio’s 3 years into the PS4′s life now do you?

If MS can get an ‘Apple like’ experience with the Xbox OS, smooth, quick access to apps, media etc…
It’ll blitz the competition, game over man… Game over…
Plus the touted Fable MMO means they are seriously thinking about that space in a big way.
Could be a one horse race really.

From the rumours so (so plenty of salt required) it looks like both systems will have unified memory.
PS4 seems to have faster memory, 720 has more. The net effect should be similar, with faster memory being offset by the streaming and decompression needed to compensate for less asset memory.
MS are also going with an edram frame buffer. Hopefully enough for a full antialiased 1080p frame with no tiling.
They missed a trick this gen with that 10mb edram. If they had fitted enough for a 720p 4xMSAA frame things would have been very different.

The most interesting thing about the specs for me will be how much of the system memory they will throw at the OS and the interface. I’d love to see the time it takes for my PS3 to show me the dashboard/trophies/who’s online to diminish or disappear altogether. I’d also love to see load times in-game disappear if possible.
It occurred to me recently that the amount of time I spend waiting for loads in my games is significant…

It seems to me that Microsoft is up to something, you see 8GB of RAM makes me think they wanna run Windows on their console or a very optimized OS based on Windows 8 for it. It might even run compatible PC games if you pay them through their store. Well that is how it looks to me anyway.
I for one think making console-wars arguments is futile based on hardware spec alone. Sony had put great hardware tech in PS3 and it had the better build quality compare to Xbox 360′s (RRoD), but the flaws of PS3 for me as a consumer was within the very limited OS. PSN got better over time but the OS is truly where PS3 suffered this gen. That’s my opinion of course. It was decent and responsive enough but it was very limited.
PS: Before Sony fanboys unleash themselves, I actually am a PS3 owner, I owned an XBOX 360 until it died on me and I enjoyed my PS3 quiet frankly more than my Xbox.

Money is there and media control for 2015+ will get pretty ugly.
