Showtime: PS4 rumoured at 1.84TF, Xbox 720 at 1.23TF

Here we go. VG247 has been told that PlayStation 4 has a 50% raw power advantage over Xbox 720, based on information out of CES.

If true, these numbers mean PlayStation 4 will have a 50% raw, computational power advantage over Xbox 720.

If latest rumours regarding next generation hardware are to be believed, the next PlayStation is to be significantly more powerful that the next Xbox.

Developer sources, speaking after meetings at CES, have told VG247 that the next PlayStation, codenamed Orbis, will have a run-capability of 1.84 teraflops. Conversely, the next Xbox, codenamed Durango, will be able to achieve 1.23 teraflops.

If true, these numbers mean PlayStation 4 will have a 50% raw, computational power advantage over Xbox 720.

While PS4 will have greater grunt that 720, however, the Microsoft machine has significantly more RAM at 8Gb, we’ve been told. Our source said that 3Gb is reserved for the OS, apps and security, leaving 4-5Gb for games.

Orbis will have 4Gb of RAM, said our source, of which 1Gb will be reserved for for OS, security and apps, leaving some 3Gb for games.

Both machines will supposedly have have the ability to read 100Gb Blu-ray discs.

Durango is apparently based on the Radeon HD 8770 GPU.

PlayStation 4 has been previously rumoured to be built on AMD’s A10 APU.

It was recently claimed that the two machines are to be announced in late March. It’s widely assumed that both consoles will launch in November this year.

VG247 is under the impression that several media outlets are in possession of documents related to Durango from CES and are currently working on major leak stories.

Personally, i prefer that each console releases a year apart. This current generation proves that even though one console has a head start, the late console can be every bit as successful in the market provided their product bears quality and appeal. Granted the first to market obviously gets all the initial hype, but at a year apart, at least i get a chance to save up and affird both consoles.

Has either company formally acknowledged the existence of a successor to their current machines?

I’ve heard another rumour, the next Xbox will have power consumption of about 1.21 gigawatt …

@53 Might be good for you, but the year late launch (coupled with the high price) of the PS3 basically reverted Sony from the undisputed king of the console market to playing catch-up to Microsoft and still coming in trailing at the end of this gen. I think Sony believes that they -have- to be out of the gate first and Microsoft knows that their earlier launch was their boon and Sony’s doom, so there’s no way they are gonna wait.

The latest report on nowgamer which claims to blow out everything next gen is quite tough to believe. It claims that Sony’s console suffers overheating because they don’t have money to spend on R&D. Is Sony that poor?
Another thing is that the report mentions a Feb 5th reveal for PS4. It is impossible. Then it gets even more strange. Mentioning X720 to have 3 SoC chips,2 Venus and 1 Mars !?
So,I have a hard time believing those rumors.

I will be happy with that.

@66 Yeah. But from what I’ve heard though, their gaming division is actually the most profitable part of the company at the moment, so it’s probably recieving a good bit of attention.

Everything else is doing quite poorly. Betting on 3D TVs really didn’t work out.

Yes, Sony have representatives walking around Japan with coffee cups to collect spare yen to fund their machine.

You know, I don’t buy that they can’t afford R&D. They wouldn’t be making a new machine if they couldn’t afford to be making one. They’re not just going to shit out two PS3′s duct tape together and call it a new system, because they know it wouldn’t sell and they’d just be burning their money. I’m not the most technically savvy guy there is, so I don’t know much about what the technical aspects are. I do know that a lot of those less technical claims seem like bullshit.

#70

Clupula
17/01/13, 4:05 pm

Especially considering their videogame division is their only profitable division. They are going to be pumping whatever money they need into that division to keep it profitable.

DeyDoDoughDontDeyDough

@70 But what if they can’t. I mean actually, physically can’t, as in there is no money. They already have the lowest credit rating possible, so who are they going to borrow from? Just saying.

@OG, Oh yeah of course, I mean if it’s too expensive I’m happy to wait for a price drop but I’m just about to sell my PS3 and I have no interest in owning more than one console next gen and the 360 has been my favourite this gen. Easy choice really.

@69 Obviously they’re going to take a serious go at it, but I don’t think you can really underestimate the seriousness of Sony’s situation right now. The more pessimistic observers are already sounding the death knell.

I kinda feel like this is recieving too little attention in the gaming press. Sony is still one unit, and it will still go down even if that demise is due to other portions of the company.

The worst bit is that the Japanese economy is in serious trouble. It’s the worst possible conditions to face in trying to bring your company back on track.

@70 I think their smartphone division is profitable, too. They generally make good phones and I’ve heard they’re in third place behind Samsung and Apple. That has to be something, right?

And yeah, those piss-poor affirmations that their R&D devision doesn’t have the money to shove an aditional 4 GB of RAM in their machine… I know Sony isn’t in a great form as of late, but come on. They know they have to come with something powerful in this next generation, unless they want to disappear.

As the next Playstation is all I’m really interested in… I would like to hear these things about durango:

1. it will not get blu-ray
2. that low teraflops will make games crawl
3. it will not be backward compatible
4. it will have more in your face ads on the desktop
5. it will have higher toll cost for xlive online gaming
6. it will have rrod all over again for the 5 first years
7. it will be easily hackable and online games will be a hackers buffet
8. it will have even less exlusive titles and no support for used games
9. it will have a higher price than other consoles on day one release
10. kinect will be a big brother surveillance cam

I will be happy with that.

#76

Clupula
17/01/13, 4:15 pm

@71 – if they physically can’t, they wouldn’t be making a new system in a competitive market. How much money did the RROD cost Microsoft? If Sony’s finances are that bad, they’re not going to risk a similar situation. It’d cost them more than if they didn’t do the R&D. It sounds really implausible. I know there’s a whole lot of people in the media who really want Sony to go under and I get the feeling a lot of this is an attempt to give them an extra P.R. push in the direction of oblivion.

#77

DeyDoDoughDontDeyDough
17/01/13, 4:20 pm

@76 – Off the shelf parts cost less R&D moneys, custom parts cost more. According to the leak, MS is going custom and therefore squeezing more power out, Sony is going off the shelf. That’s all there is to it.

Even then it’s worth waiting for some actual games. Flat specs can hide so many bottlenecks, tricks and differences that in actual use the reality can be very different. For example isn’t the Cell in PS3 capable of 2 Teraflops by itself? So PS4 is less powerful than PS3 OMG!!!!

#80

DeyDoDoughDontDeyDough

PS3 is 3-hundred and something gigaflops; a third of a teraflop, if I remember correctly.

All of the big three are losing money hand over fist right now.

Sure, Sony are in the worst financial position, but the PS4 will sell, just as the PS3 has.
The PS3 has outsold the 360 in Europe and the East, so hearing people decry the PS3 as a failure is honestly fucking annoying.

@ DSB same thing happened to Apple. If you knew how much of a come back they would make when they were at their lowest right now and you bought 100 shares at their lowest price you wouldn’t even be on this site right now. You be on the beach in RIO with three beautiful Brazilian girls right now.

Fuck what all those reports say they just want hits to their site and fanboy arguing. If Toshiba is still around then SONY will be too. They’re going to bounce back trust me no matter how much people on here pray every night for their failure.

Last time I heard, ninty had the worst performing gaming division. They are going too?
“Only true fanboys can’t see that.”
LOL. Like you?
Big cos don’t fall, they survive by slimming. Do you really know how market works? Both ms and sony are big enough that they will survive. Its hillarious how people think going boom is very easy.

On topic, blah blah. Ps3 guys will move on to ps4 and 360 guys on 720. I will wait for the final reveal. Unless it affects things significantly, it doesn’t matter.
About custom parts, ps3 was more custom built than 360, did it reap any significant benefits, NO. Unless you want to use next gen systems for buliding your super computer, teraflops don’t matter much in terms of numbers.
Also both can be happy, WiiU is officially knocked out of the park (spec wise).
Although I think 720 will have less power for games than ps4, simply because it has to divert some of it for kinect 2.

I just hope the last guardian makes it move over to the PS4 as a launch title. SONY really needs to focus on that launch to be as successful as possible. GT6 Prologue needs to be half way completed now and save Versus XIII for a PS4 launch too just up the graphics to next gen. Heavenly Sword 2, Uncharted 4,InFamous 3 these need to launch in the first year of the PS4.

#92

Erthazus
17/01/13, 5:05 pm

Yeah it’s true.

PS4 is the last investment they can make. It will be a failure or a True Next Generation System.

If Sony will fail with PS4, then it’s done. Company will die like THQ.

If you don’t remember, THQ had the same issues, Sony have right now but in technology segment.

Guys, Sony lost in Japan TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP. What can be worse then that? Losing leadership in it’s own country which is very technologically advanced is basically a good death sentence.

PS4 will make or break them. We will see how it goes.

@85 Don’t remind me about Apple stock, man :P

On a personal level I like Kaz Hirai, he’s the kind of CEO I want to see in any company, but Apples rise was first and foremost a total anomaly.

It was very much the perfect storm comprised of unique competence in design, unique leadership on the business side, and both of those things coming together in an economy that was literally on coke, to the point of collapsing in a massive stroke a few years later.

Apple managed to launch a near perfect offensive at the best possible time.

Sony is in the exact opposite position, with a Japanese economy that is all but falling apart, and according to a lot of analysts, a corporate culture that has been very damaging in their ability to keep up with the competition.

Also, Apple didn’t suffer the same punishing failures that Sony has over the last few years. You have the PSP, the Vita, 3D TVs that aren’t selling, phones that can’t keep up, and that’s just to bring out the most obvious disappointments.

That all adds up to a pretty serious anchor, in a Japanese economy that is increasingly dooming a lot of its companies by default.

Simply put, Sony isn’t Apple.

I agree. I also think Sony has always been a company that fails to communicate a proper message to the market. Even if it has a hit, they will fail at making it explode.
Things get worse when we factor the economy situation in Japan. But I believe that while economy isn’t that healthy in there. Sony is also making a bevy of unforgivable mistakes. like the price of Vita memory cards. It was flat-out stupid.
I still have a hard time believing that one console will be so much stronger than another one. Be it Micro’s or Sony’s.

hey Belmont if I came over to your house with 3 pick up trucks and stole all your shit before you got home 2 minutes before I got away I bet you wish cars only had a 1 gallon tank and gas was $300 per gallon so it would be harder for me to get far as possible.
