Halo 2 PC multiplayer servers to be shut down next month

Thursday, 17th January 2013 12:02 GMT By Nick Akerman

Microsoft will switch off Halo 2′s PC multiplayer on February 15. The decision comes due to dwindling population numbers accessing the game.

As explained by Halo Waypoint’s Jessica Shea, numbers playing Halo 2 have been closely monitored for quite a while.

“We’ve been monitoring the population for months, and it’s been peaking consistently at approximately 20 players or less,” commented Shea.

“Those that own this game can continue to enjoy Multiplayer over LAN after that date; however our network services will be turned off at that time.

“We love you, Halo 2 PC, and you will live forever in our hearts.

“#singletear.”

Halo 2 arrived on PC two-and-a-half years after making its Xbox debut. Players have been able to enjoy PC multiplayer since May 2007, but unfortunately, this chapter is coming to an end.

Despite this, Microsoft does have some good news for Halo fans. The company revealed the Majestic Map Pack, which is due out in Feb, and two new specialisations to work through. Pioneer initiates an armour mod that allows players to rank up quickly, while Pathfinder speeds up your walking pace when holding turrets and also allows mounted guns to have a shorter cool down period.

Thanks, Eurogamer.

Won’t think render certain achievements unobtainable? Isn’t that… bad?

Also, isn’t this GFWL – so surely it uses the same servers as other GFWL titles, which should never be shut down as its paid for by your gold subscription?

They seem to be treading into a very grey area here.

@1, No one is going to play that stupid shit on the PC.

Halo 1,2 were better ports then their Xbox counterparts and no one played them anyway. I remember when Vista launched and it was a freakin success for Microsoft and then there was Halo 2. Oh gosh. After HL2 multiplayer and CS, no one cared.

People still to this day play counter-strike 1.6 on the PC for example. (34,456) according to Steam right now and it’s much more popular then CS: Source and Global offensive. Lol.

+ Tribes:Ascend is the best alternative ever. My favourite multiplayer shooter of 2012. It is excellent.

You have an entirely warped view of what constitutes as a good port. Because it’s well known that both games had poor ports.

    @4, Explain yourself.

Halo 2 for example even had additional weapon, better resolution and it was the first game “Halo 2″ (and probably the last one) that offered a streaming tech from a copy (instant launch while game installs on the PC and it was one of the revolutionary gaming ideas from MS.)
the game offered Live features not available in the Xbox version, such as guide support and achievements. The Windows port also added two exclusive multiplayer maps and a map editor.

Also, these two games are the first that had the best controller support for Xbox controller.

@2, You don’t need a Gold sub to play mp GFWL titles on PC. They tried, but after abject failure they had to rescind the policy.

Halo 2′s experience on PC was ruined by GFWL as was Gears of War. I remember upgrading to Vista for Crysis, Gears of War and halo 2. I got so many BSODs from Gears and so many issues with GFWL I went back to XP for the next years until Windows 7 came out.
    .
There is little good news for PC Halo fans VG247. Do some journalism and see hwo well Microsoft has supported the PC since 2007. Remembering it released the worst service in gaming history (GFWL), Hasn’t released a AAA for PC since Fable 3 (despite not porting Fable 2), has done little but hamper PC gaming for the past 5 years whilst they play with their toy xflops. Microsoft own the PC platform and now I hope they lose it with Devs pushing to Linux in the coming years. Microsoft Studios = Cancer of PC Gaming.

I tried Tribes its good but its much focus on jet pack.
For me is shame that there isn’t gears 3 or Judgment for PC not just for MP but for whole package.

@7, I agree that Vista and GFWL was a mess in general but I had no problems with these games using Vista and GFWL. But that is my personal experience.

@8,”For me is shame that there isn’t gears 3 or Judgment for PC not just for MP but for whole package.”

Yeah, I agree with that. It’s a shame that we can’t have Gears Of War 3. Gears 3 on Xbox 360 was excellent.

Erzarage wrong in his angsty paranoia, refreshing vg247 home page for news on what made PC shooters irrelevant.

Fact is, it was in the top most played games. It never was available on Steam.

Now run along and masturbate to hentai with your r***shit friendo.

@12, If only Windows Live had more then 5000 idiots like yourself.

No one gives or gived a fuck about GFWL back then or even now. Halo was a piece of shit and no one cared about it on the PC since H1,2 releases because PC had much better shooters and that’s why this POS that has no gameplay is shutting down finally right now while other oldschool games people still play to this day and will continue to this day playing.

and yes, it was never available in Steam because no one will buy that shit. thank god for humanity, no one needs to play games that has no gameplay or any substance at all.

P.S. The fact that GTA IV was first in GFWL shows how much popular GFWL was.

Erzarage, unfortunately for you you’re the deprived, cretinous piece of internet idiocy, and the sole reason anyone can read your ‘opinions’ is because internet exists.

If noone cared about it, pros wouldn’t play it and it wouldn’t be in the top Gfwl. If you, idiotic cretin can theoretize just about anything which pops into your anime induced mind, I might as well say that if it was available on Steam it would be up there with your shitty CS.

You’re just a miserable, insane nerd in denial.

Now shut the trap and trick yourself further in your 12 years old schizophrenia.

‘Pro’ Halo players… Right… What do they play for some M&Ms? Halo E-sport? Yeah… I’ll stick to watching CS, DOTA, COH and Starcraft.

Erthazus isn’t the one being rude or immature here Da Man. I expect you’re one of the last GFWL fanboys kicking around. If so you’re the weird nutter here. The service is universally hated for a reason, *SPOILER* because its crap.

^Halo games are universally known in toy sport , sorry cybersport. Look up Walshy, Mlg and check out a few videos on youtube.

    I expect you don’t own an Xbox360.

As for Erzarage, mentally ill patient has been posting the same copy paste propaganda about anything halo related for three years or so. He even hated Halo before he could spell the name of the developer properly, google him if you have nothing better to do.

I also never argued that Gfwl is good or bad.

You hardcore player. You mature gamer.
