DmC: Devil May Cry reviews were always going to be interesting, given the anguish surrounding Dante’s appearance, the game’s combat and so on. But we don’t have to second-guess the scores any longer. Get them after the cut.

If you have a score you want us to add, just drop a link into the comments below.

  • Microsoft is fixing Xbox One’s slow controllers

Xbox One control pads have many charms, but quick start up is not one of them. @8 They’ve definitely not been bought. I just cannot wait to discuss the game when the embargo lifts, seriously.

The game definitely looks good, a great contrast to greek style of Gow. Will play this sometime this year.

I can’t wait for this to be finally released.

@11 I know you weren’t being serious, but I’m worried that folk will seriously believe that the press is being bought on this one.

You getting it day one dude?

    #12 2 years ago
  13. polygem

wow, i knew it will be good. i liked the demo. planned to get it day one but i still have lots of unfinished/even unstarted games here, so it would be kinda stupid to buy it now. i secretly hope for a wiiu port soon too;)
current gen i sold/ traded in most of my games. i know i lost money that way, still it helped me to constantly get new games whenever i wanted. i have all 3 systems and had one or two handhelds as well all the time (psp, vita, ds 3ds). expensive stuff. rented games too from time to time but do not like to have the feeling that i have to rush things. BUT i started collecting nintendo (wii, wiiu, ds, 3ds games) recently and want to continue that. i just felt like i had to focus on something:) so getting it for the wiiu would be my first choice really. looks like it wont happen though.

i think i´ll wait a little if i can. i just love DmC though, so i cannot count on my own words here. regarding games i am like a tiny leaf in the wind anyway.

haha, THAT´S the soundtrack for slaying demons all day and throw them back TO HELL where they belong!

    #19 2 years ago
  20. YoungZer0

@15: Have been hearing it up and down since one of the trailers featured it. Really hope there is more music like it in the game, because Combichrist doesn’t seem to usually produce this kind of music.

    #20 2 years ago
  21. Dave Cook

@20 put it this way dude: most people think it’s got a dubstep soundtrack. It doesn’t. It has little flashes and ‘wubz’ here and there, but nothing full-blown Scrillex or any shite like that.

    #21 2 years ago
  22. YoungZer0

@21: I thought that the boss fight from the demo definitely had some dubstep. But that’s not Combichrist, that’s Noisia. And personally, i don’t care what the genre is, if it’s good music; it’s good music.

Not having had access to the demo, I am most anticipating the end of the guessing, and partly-informed naysaying around this, and seeing this game being reacted to in the plain light of day. Once people can judge for themselves. THAT is what I am looking forward to – alongside a full assessment from Dave. I am really looking forward to seeing what DMC actually is (and have been for a while).

  24. absolutezero

Remember that Dragon Age 2 got some pretty sterling “genuine” reviews when it came out.

Also the Ninja Theory twitter is a thing of entitled bitter beauty. Serious go have a look at it theres one mentioning that no “genuine” review has been below 89%.

    #24 2 years ago
  25. Dave Cook

@24 that’s because the embargo is on January 14th. I believe that the other reviews aren’t genuine. I honestly believe that angry, bitter gamers who hate NT’s direction would go to the lengths of falsifying reviews. Their reaction thus far has been pathetic.

Either way man, the review embargo lifting will be interesting to see.

  27. YoungZer0

@25: Yep, so far we’ve seen every negative stereotype of a gamer being represented by the DMC Fans. So i trust the will continue to show their worst side and do anything to smear the game.

    #27 2 years ago
  28. absolutezero

You want to know why most of the reactions have been petulant toy tossing?

Its mainly because no one, not a single Goddamn person was interested in opening a discussion about why. Instead we got the guy from OXM acting like a cunt, instead we got GARMES JURLISMS telling us that they know best and we should shut and buy. Just buy it. Shut up its early footage wait for the demo, Shut up its a demo the full game is different. SHUT UP AND BUY IT.

I think the only site that took a balanced view of this entire escapade was Gather Your Party.

No I remember that CVG tweet calling the people moaning about 30FPS losers. This is our media.

    #28 2 years ago
  29. Dave Cook

@28 Maybe they do just really like the game? Is that not a possibility.

I really like it. I can’t say any more because of the embargo, but I genuinely, truthfully believe gamers are wrong about this one. It’s superb.

    #29 2 years ago
  30. absolutezero

All of them? Every single last one working for a Major games site does see a single fault with either the direction or the gameplay or the writing?

uh huh. I’m sure its just the fans being difficult, you know the people that allowed this game to be created by buying all the previous entries.

    Entitled, the lot of them.

    #30 2 years ago
  31. Dave Cook

@30 hold on, who said every reviewer likes the game? The embargo doesn’t lift until Jan 14th :/

Think you’re blowing this out of proportion a bit dude.

Yes I do believe ‘fans’ have been overly harsh to a game they haven only played a demo for. It’s not representative to how the game expands as it goes. It’s knee-jerk reaction at its worst.

I’m a big hack n’ slash fan – it’s my favourite genre – and I really do like this game. It’s great. I’m not bought and paid for, didn’t get any merch or trips. It’s just a brilliant take on what was – in my opinion – a franchise of diminishing returns.

  35. absolutezero

Im casting no accusations or anything here Dave, I think everyone knows your a tip-top chap.

Most of the previews written for the larger more “corporate” sites and the magazines still running have all been glowing. The times that they even mentioned some of the concerns were to belittle and brush them away as nothing.

Theres an atmosphere of “We know whats good, thats why we have our jobs. You should just shup up and stop making us look bad”. That OXM video is like being patted on the head and told to settle down.

Its come to the stage where if you now want to say anything slightly negative about what you’ve seen from the many promotional videos, the demo and interviews you’ll get BUT HAVE YOU PLAYED THE FULL GAME? thrown at you. Like thats more than enough to make everything go away. No I have not played the full game but the weight of everything beforehand has made me not want to do that.

Kinda sure its going to be a proper success either way, despite how rough the game has had it. The pre-order figures are more or less backing this up, right now I think its higher than Revengence.

Basically what I’m trying to say in a terrible way is that the over-load of love for the game opposed to the “fans” (they are’nt really fans are they te he) outcry has been a little bit dodgy from the get go.

    #35 2 years ago
  36. YoungZer0

@28: Blah, blah, blah. Looking for new reasons to hate the game, every chance you get. Don’t you? Like a true “DMC Fan”. People still complain about the hair. Most of them don’t even know that it turns white in devil mode. They are hating because they can, they are hating because THEY DO FEEL ENTITLED and at this point Ninja Theory has nothing to prove.

This isn’t even comparable to the ending of Mass Effect 3. The ending could’ve been changed, but if you listen to a “DMC Fans”, they want EVERYTHING about this game to be different (More like the same, really). Are you really that stupid? Do you really think you’re making a reasonable argument here?

If you don’t agree, how about you act like a fucking adult and move the fuck on? Your crying and bitching isn’t going to change a damn thing. The game is done and it’s going to come out. And the sells will tell if it’s better to do more of the same crap or deliver something new for once.

Capcom doesn’t owe you anything. You didn’t buy their games because you wanted to do them a favor, you bought it because you liked it.

Don’t like it, don’t buy it. But for the love of Spaghetti-Monster, stop bitching.

The whole energy people like you waste writing ignorant crap is insane. Draw a horse, or something.

  37. Dave Cook

@35 Oh no man seriously I know you’re sound dude, I didn’t think you were having a proper go at me :)

I’m trying to calmly play referee here and to suggest that the game is better than the criticism aimed at it since it was launched. Granted though, people will still refuse to buy it because of ‘that’ haircut. It will be their loss that’s for sure.

    #37 2 years ago
  38. absolutezero

Thats what I was waiting for : “hair”.

I don’t think anyone will refuse to buy this game because of the colour of the main characters hair. I know so little about it that I have’nt actually seen a scene where the top of a mop falls on Dante’s head and he looks at himself in a mirror. EDIT: Its a wig, my bad.

Then he proceeds to go white over the course of the game anyway.

Think about my negativity as a balancing meter for you saying the samething in every thread but from a burningly positive stance instead. My yang to your ying. Only I don’t really insult anyone that likes the game. Which is nice.

    #38 2 years ago
  39. death_489

    @Dave

People dont want to buy this because they have many many reasons then the hair , i think it’s true ..

) The character is changed , he act and talk different then before.
) The gameplay is sooo easy , i tried the demo and i think they are right on this one ..
) NT is making fun of the fans , that’s just rude from them .
) There are other reasons but i dont remember them .

What do you think since you played it ?. is it true ?. i for one think it will be a good game but not a dmc game ..

    #39 2 years ago
  40. Dave Cook

    @39

I’ll address these points as best I can while under embargo:

“The character is changed , he act and talk different then before.”

    Does he? ;)

“The gameplay is sooo easy , i tried the demo and i think they are right on this one ”

Son of Sparda difficulty says otherwise.

“NT is making fun of the fans , that’s just rude from them .”

Nope. To say why this is wrong would be to spoil the plot.

I don’t say this to argue, but seriously. Wait until the reviews lift :)

    I wish I could say more, but I can’t.

  41. deathm00n

People should learn the diference between reboot, remake and continuation.

I’ve played the demo, sure it isn’t a masterpiece, but I plan buying it, the whole limbo thing is very cool to me, the first level of the demo was awesome in terms of design. The one thing that I was confused and I’ve seen other people complaining is the triggers being what change between weapons.

  42. Da Man

It’s just a boring single player half-pattern based game, which isn’t even funny to play.

I’m willing to bet it’ll be the last Dmc. It’s not 2001 anymore.

    #42 2 years ago
  43. DeyDoDoughDontDeyDough

    @Da Man

That doesn’t really even warrant a response, but okay, I’ll take the bait:

No, it’s not. It’s actually one of the most inventive and thoroughly excellent action games I’ve played this whole gen. But hey, don’t play it; no skin off mine.

@45 I’ve been a Devil May Cry fan since day one, and spectacle fighters are my favourite genre bar none, and I love the new DmC.

Do nor speak for the entire fanbase please.

Really? You mean people losing interest in pattern-based, AI controlled videogames? Here’s a bait for you: name me one reason why I should play a single player game over a multiplayer one..

I’ve played the first four, and I wouldn’t play them again now.

  52. DeyDoDoughDontDeyDough

    @48

I don’t know anybody that played FFXIII to the end that didn’t enjoy it a great deal. On the one hand that figures, since you’re hardly likely to play it to the end if you’re hating it, but on the other, it also means that those who gave it the most time got a lot out of it, me included. I really loved FFXIII. Completed it twice and did a shedload of endgame content. Not going to make excuses for that. Good game.

    #52 2 years ago
  53. Dave Cook

    @50

“I’ve played the first four, and I wouldn’t play them again now.”

??? It’s a new take on an aged franchise. New perspectives can surprise you.

“Name me one reason why I should play a single player game over a multiplayer one.”

Because developers are becoming insanely good at coming up with exciting, emotive and thrilling scripted events that can only exist in a single player context. Plus, single player games can tell superb stories.

Actually baffled by what you said btw. Mad.

    #53 2 years ago
  54. DeyDoDoughDontDeyDough

    @50

Your prejudice for all single-player games then should have been stated as such. That’s not what you said, so stop back-pedalling. You’re free to hate SP games, but don’t call something boring and dated just because you have other tastes. It’s disrespectful to the people who come here to find out whether it’s good or not for them. People who enjoy this sort of game. People like me.

    #54 2 years ago
  55. Ireland Michael

@54 Back-peddling, being disrespectful and insulting everyone as inferior human beings because they have different tastes is kinda his schtick.

    #53

If yet another game where you get ranks based on how you juggle AI controlled foes whose sole purpose is to assist you in doing that turns people on then okay I guess.

I really don’t know why I would want to play scripted events when I can watch a movie with real actors instead. Baffling I suppose.

    #54

You missed my point.. I was expecting you to give reasons along the lines of storyline and scripted scenes but it was done already.

It’s not disrespectful in the slightest. Bayonetta is funny thus it gets my money. this game isn’t.

    #57 2 years ago
  58. Ireland Michael

The gameplay layer of FFXIII is solid enough.

It’s the entire framework surrounding the story, characters, lore and progression that is an utter disaster.

    #58 2 years ago
  59. Da Man

Of course the resident neurotic is hard at work to help me derail the thread..

It’s amazing isn’t it how his sole purpose here is exactly that. What would he do if it wasn’t for anyone not buying into anything posted.

Knee jerk reactions, shallow generic copy paste analysis and bs disguised as independent views. Some heavy issues right there.

    #59 2 years ago
  60. ShowUsYourLunch

    @58

I would strongly disagree with that. you walk down a corridor and press x in battles to win.

    #60 2 years ago
  61. Ireland Michael

@60 If that was the entirity of your strategy in FFXIII, 90% of the battles would have slaughtered you, and you wouldn’t have passed the any of the boss battles past the first few hours.

Now, FFVII, there was a “Press X to win” Final Fantasy.

    #61 2 years ago
  62. Deacon

So now ALL SP games are fair game for Da Man. They’re all built with the sole purpose of being ‘beaten’, so therefore they must all inherently be shallow and pointless.

If you were a professional MP gamer then I would allow you some respect, but you’re not. You’re just a bitter, cynical nerd, who hates 90% of games made this decade, yet spends a LOT of time writing gibberish posts online telling us all how shit everything is while we try to actually discuss things in an adult fashion. Cos we, you know, like these things.

You don’t need any help derailing threads. You are that guy.

And again… judging a full game based only on a demo and some videos online. That’s your second logic fail of the day DM – one more and you’re in danger of becoming a potato.

    #62 2 years ago
  63. Ireland Michael

    @62 Did someone say potato?

    I like potatoes.

    #63 2 years ago
  64. Deacon

@Michael, I mean, there is a LOT of X-pressing in XIII, and XIII-2… but it’s like you said, people seem to forget just how much of that there was in VII (VIII, & IX too in honesty). Nostalgia has taken over.

Anyway… back to this DMC tirade -_-

    #64 2 years ago
  65. Da Man

Cool story, brah. Err, first of I don’t like something which tries to be challenging this way. And yes that’s precisely the reason why they’re shallow and pointless, which sales prove a lot. Customers are getting away from pseudo challenges and play multiplayer instead.

Also, no I’m not a pro-gamer in the slightest. I have a job, which is why I don’t hate Apple and Justin Bieber with Lady Gaga ;)

Also I never said half as much of what a psychotic, hypersensitive mind of yours painted right there.

Ironically, our independent mind right there would fit the description just fine.

@64 VIII only suffered that problem if you were willing to draw spells for hours (ugh, what a tedious mechanic). Most of us did though, so it became the case pretty much by default.

FFIX definitely didn’t have that issue, due to the class specific characters. Good luck winning a fight just by pressing X with Vivi, Eiko, Quina or Dagger in your party.

FFX? Yes, but only in the end game. For the main story progression, every mob had specific weaknesses that only certain characters could handle.

    FFXII… you didn’t even have to press X. =P

    @66 Nice back peddling.

Without constant split second paradigm shifting and taking an active role in the process, many of the later encounters were completely impassable, especially the end game.

@77 we can only dream of being able to comprehend your level of humour DM!

Seriously though, this is my last post of the day. It’s been great. Let’s see if you’ve learnt anything here today…

    A simple question -

Assuming I play ALL sorts of games. Every genre. I’ve tried every franchise. I’ve done it all. I play games at least an hour a day (you know, to relax and entertain myself), whilst holding none favourite over the other. They’re all great.

Now, using the English language, how could one describe the relationship I have with videogames?

    #80 2 years ago
  81. Ireland Michael

@78 So do I. Just for everything besides the main gameplay.

It’s a solid and decently strategy intensive battle system, but if the characters are utterly nauseating and the story is a pile of crap… well…

FFXIII is a case study in bad storytelling, even more so than Metal Gear Solid.

    Re: DmC.

I enjoyed the demo. I think the game is flashy, enjoyable and funny.

    But…

I do know for a fact that some mechanics in the game as it currently stands are completely broken – jump cancelling is especially bad. If you can infinitely spamjumpslash an enemy into submission, there’s an inherent problem with the design. They *will* have to patch that for the full release.

I think it’ll still be fun, but there are niggles with the system that have to be fixed. Pretending they don’t exist is naive, no matter what else the game gets right.

    #81 2 years ago
  82. ShowUsYourLunch

My humor isn’t really rocket science to decipher it, but then it’s not really aimed at deprived, socially and professionally unsuccessful nerds who quote the same videogames they criticized a post back..

I did improve my spoken Engrish. you only need to see that thread with the i.hate.disagrees to figure it went from blatantly pathetic to above mediocre (well probably mediocre compared to residents of Uk)

As for your question, you are both jaded and cynical (and a nerd) which is the whole reason you like anime and japanese mind fakery (you *are* the target audience, aside from the teens), so why talk theoretically? Anyway, that would be quite an enthusiast.
