Minecraft: 15 million downloads sold in 2012, Mojang releases stats

Minecraft developers Mojang and 4J Studios sold over 15 million combined downloads of the insanely popular sandbox title last year. New figures from creators Mojang have broken down the lofty total.

The above stats were released by the studio this morning, revealing that across all formats Minecraft sold 4.2 million downloads in December 2012 alone.

The end-of-year spurt saw the game’s 2012 sales pushed beyond the 15 million mark, with the 4J Studios’ Xbox 360 build shifting 5,002,370, Mojang’s PC original selling 4,177,843, and Minecraft Pocket Edition selling 5,899,727 units on both Android and iOS.

Drinks are on Notch then yeah?

Minecraft fever is definitely in the air. Recently, this man has attempted to re-create the Earth to 1:1500 scale. Just try to imagine what that’d look like, then go here to see what it actually looks like.

Thanks GI.Biz.

@1 I presume that Sony was the problem in this instance. Mojang clearly likes making money.

I’ve heard varying things about Sony’s take to indies – both bad and good. Maybe in Mojang’s case they were bad.

Minecraft isn’t a QTE storybook and it doesn’t consist of linear narrow corridors and copious cutscenes, so it probably wouldn’t sell to PS3 ‘gamers’.

I think the deal they got with MS probably maximised their sales and profits. Likely that for exclusivity they have been given a lot of promotion and help with feature patching etc.

And they say PC gaming isn’t dead. It can’t outsell a digital xbox version.

Steam needs to open itself up like the Android store. It’s the PC’s only hope.

@5 That’s because it’s not dead. Anyone who thinks PC is in trouble needs to serious wake up and think about what they’re saying.

Not a personal dig at you Stardog, but really trust me, PC isn’t dead.

@6 I am a PC/mobile developer who makes a living off selling games. It’s been as good as dead since 2005.

Indies can make a decent living, but you can’t investment for any ambitious AAA game, because there’s no market, because it’s dead.

If Steam was open like the Google Play store, it would be a different story. Or even better, Google Play for desktop.

Lol! How on earth do you spin Minecraft PC selling a phenominal 4 million in a year into ‘PC gaming is dead’?

Your games may not be selling (no offense, I make no judgement on quality), but other peoples games are selling, and the evidence is right there on the page, in the words ’4 million units sold’.
