Activision’s Bond titles pulled due to expired license – report

Saturday, 5th January 2013 15:10 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Earlier this week, Steam users as well as customers of Activision’s online store noticed the firm’s James Bond PC titles were missing in action. According to a report on NeoGamr, the reason the titles are no longer available for purchase is due to the license having expired, per a reliable source.

Activision acquired the right to make titles based on the James Bond license in 2006, and it wasn’t set to expire until 2014.

The fist title released was Quantum of Solace in 2008 ad was followed by Blood Stone and 007 Goldeneye in 2010, and the PS3 and Xbox 360 port 007 Goldeneye Reloaded in 2011.

The latest title in the series, 007 Legends, was developed by Eurocom and released in 2012.

EA was the previous license holder of the gaming series.

We’ve sent a mail to Activision to confirm the information, and will update you when someone gets back with us.

Surely the licence expiring would just mean that they can’t make any more games, not that they have to stop selling the ones they have already made?

As I said in reply to the original story. It’s the only thing that makes sense in light of the universal yank. But if the license wasn’t set to expire till 2014, why a year earlier?

Activision had a LICENSE TO KILL, and they chose this one.

    Waits for applause.

Finally, I can’t really say that I am sad, this is actually good news, I hope some developer who is worth it steps in.

IMO a good James Bond 007 game would be like this, a Third Person Shooter, Focus on Gadgets and Sand Box level design, Epic Driving Sequences & Mini-games, also some cinematic action won’t hurt, but above all, get a whole new Bond, Craig is awesome and all, but I would rather separate the video game from the movies, get a new Bond, with his own story that isn’t connected to a movie, and make a great game.

Same reason why the Neverwinter Night games have disappeared from steam (and most other digital distributors). Atari, and Wizards of The Coast are fighting over the D&D license.

Bond died with Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig was the final nail in the coffin anyway.

Most probably after the huge successes of Skyfall, EoN/MGM are not thrilled that there was no game tie in, Legends is utter shit, the best game Activision made is a remake of over a decade old one and generally they are doing bad things with the property(Blood Stone was decent, but not what Bond deserve). So there was a clause in the contract which allow them to terminate it sooner then 2014.

Maybe Sony as a distribuor of the films, are after the game license to make a PS4 exclusive and try to get Bond fans buy the new console. Fuck if they do that and the game is BatmanAA/AC good and what@7 said, I will buy a fuckin’ PS4.

@10 I take it you haven’t seen Skyfall then? Best Bond film in many many years and I say that as a huge bond fan, and I have friends who are even bigger Bond fans than me who strongly agree.

How so?? It’s probably worse than turning Batman into a gangsta drama (which was DK).

while i liked casino royale, quantum of solace was shit and loved skyfall i have to say pierce brosnan is definitely a better bond than daniel craig.
