Renegade Kid boss vows to drop 3DS support if piracy ramps up

Mutant Mudds, Dementium and Moon developer Renegade Kid may give up on the 3DS if it is successfully exploited by hackers and pirates.

In an impassioned blog post, studio head Jools Watsham blamed piracy for poor sales performance on DS.

"Piracy on the Nintendo DS crippled the DS retail market, especially in Europe. We’ll never know how/if Dementium II landed in as many hands as the first game, Dementium: The Ward, due to the rampant piracy at the time," he claimed.

The developer said the first Dementium title sold 100,000 copies worldwide, "a great success for an original mature-rated title on the DS", but that Dementium 2 managed just half of that.

"We’ll never truly know why that was so, but many seem to believe that piracy had a lot to do with it," he said.

"If piracy gets bad on the 3DS, we will have no choice but to stop supporting the platform with new games."

Watsham presented several arguments against piracy and called on console hackers to become "legit developers" instead.
