Fez to be ported to other platforms in 2013

Award-winning indie puzzle platformer Fez will make its debut outside Xbox Live this year.

In a new blog post, Polytron’s Phil Fish said 2013 witll be “an interesting one” as “Fez will finally be ported to other platforms”.

The two-time IGF winner is currently only available via Xbo Live.

Although no further details were given, Fish said Polytron has plans for the soundtrack.

Fish also mentioned “a US branch”, which may simply mean he is personally moving; the lease on the company’s Canadian office has ended, colleagues have already moved on, and as Fish notes, “the future is uncertain for Polytron”.

“It’s just me now. I could do anything with this company, but I dont know what yet. There’s a couple of new games in the pipeline, of course. But there’s also an ambition to do so much more,” he said.

“I want to design everything. Maybe not a videogame? Maybe something else entirely.”

The developer said that it has been a year of high and lows for Polytron, which famously rolled back and re-issued a buggy patch for Fez as it could not afford to fix it – but that the 2-and-a-half-D platformer has done well enough for itself sales-wise.

“It was a success. It didn’t break any records, but it made more than enough to let me keep doing what I do. So I’m afraid you’re stuck with me for a little while longer,” he said.

Fish also made a wry reference to the scandals which dogged him in 2012 – controversy over Polytron’s representation in Indie Game: The Movie and fallout from an off-hand comment about Japanese games development among them – which later saw the formerly approachable developer become something of an online recluse.

“Between the game and the documentary, too much happened. Too much to process. I feel like I learned something, but I dont know exactly what it is yet. Keep your mouth shut maybe?” he said.

Thanks, GameInformer.

Here’s me hoping this comes over to the PSN or Steam, for I’m currently working towards building a gaming PC, and already own a PS3.

I think Steam and iOS are the most likely targets. PSN could be a little expensive – but if Sony were to swoop in and cut a deal so Fish can patch more frequently …

Steam is pretty much guaranteed. Almost every XBLA exclusive eventually comes to PC.

I don’t think patching is that difficult on psn. I have many “small” games on vita which get patched regularly. I don’t think that would happen if they had to pay something to the tune of 40k$ everytime.
Not to mention many FTP titles on vita require constant patching too. Also sony allows self-publishing which will allow polytron more money in their pocket.

@4 yeah I think Fish and Sony could sort out something tasty between them and that would be slightly embarrassing for Microsoft given the two companies’ headline war about loving indies last year.

Yeah. Great news. A PSN/Vita release would be great and I see no reason why it can’t happen.

    Hopefully it comes to Steam.
Same goes for Spelunky and Trials Evolution.
