War Z update charging players for instant respawn, Valve investigating policy

Wednesday, 19th December 2012 11:21 GMT By Dave Cook

The War Z has seen a controversial launch on Steam, with many listed features on the game’s product descriptor being unavailable at release. It gets worse however, as respawning in the game used to take anywhere up to 60 minutes. Following an update patch it now takes up to four hours – unless you pay real money. Valve is now investigating the studio’s policy.

Kotaku reports that while The War Z has rocketed up to the top of the Steam best seller charts, the respawn microtransaction issue has seen developer Hammerpoint Games come under fire on Reddit.

Just to reiterate the baffling facts here: if you die in The War Z it can take up to 60 minutes before you respawn. Now, after this morning’s update that can take up to four hours unless you pay an instant respawn fee of 50GC (gold coins), which equates to about 50GC, or $0.40.

It’s chump change we’re sure you’ll agree, but considering that you can only buy GC points in blocks of $5, it’s a feature that will add up significantly over time. What’s next? Charging people per the bullet? Worse still, The War Z isn’t free-to-play. It’s costs $15 at base price.

Eurogamer adds that Valve has apologised to its customers and is now investigating Hammerpoint’s policy.

Over on The War Z’s Steam forum, Valve’s Al Farnsworth responded to the issue after the forum become flooded with complaints on the matter, and replied, “We take these complaints seriously and are investigating the issue.

“There has been a lot of traffic in this forum – a new topic every minute for the last day and a half, with thousands of replies. All that makes moderation a very difficult task.

“If you have concerns or criticisms about the game, you are free to post those in this forum. However, please keep your posts on-topic and about the game. There’s no reason to personally insult other posters, the developers, or the moderators. Please keep the discussion rules and guidelines in mind when posting.”

Forum user “Kewk” has come under fire for banning forum users who aim criticism at The War Z, suggesting that damage control is in effect.

Please chip in with your thoughts on this issue. I’m very keen to hear what you, the readers think about this.

“unless you pay an instant respawn fee of 50GC (gold coins), which equates to about 50GC, or $0.40″? :)

This game sounds awful. Ten minutes ago I heard of the faulty description; five minutes ago I head about the censoring of forum users; and now, this.

    Wow. :O

    *edit*

And now, I heard about this: http://www.vg247.com/2012/10/17/the-war-z-suspected-of-snaffling-league-of-legends-legalese/

    Holy fucking hell.

Its a shameless disgusting cash-grab aimed at DayZ, theres not a chance in hell it was in development before DayZ exploded and theres no evidence been released apart from the Developer claiming it was.

It has so much of the game re-used from War Inc. (which was a widely ignored F2P FPS, apart from Russians), environements, textures, models and audio has just been recycled to get this game on the market as soon as possible.

This is Zynga levels of depressing.

The F2P future, I hope you like it. (Yes I know its not even technically F2P, but the entire make-up is of something that should have been free).

I think the definition of the term ‘chump change’ should be changed from ‘small amount’ to ‘any amount of money idiots put down on bad free-to-play money pits, you chumps’.

@7 are you blind, stupid, or trying to be a hipster ~ ?

Absolutely nothing about War Z is better than DayZ ~ and DayZ is currently just a free alpha mod.

@8: The graphics look better and the game seems to actually work, that’s why it looks better than DayZ.

    … and you’re a douche.

@9 you know that the publicity shots bear no relation to the game, right?

It seriously does not look any better than DayZ theres low res textures everywhere (which was lifted from War Inc anyway), and the animations are just as broken. Also where as DayZ was pretty rigid with its rules about being able to hide, go prone to avoid attention from zombies and stuff like that everything in WarZ is up in the air. Its complete random chance if you attract zombies or not. They can also kill you without touching you thanks to awful netcode.

DayZ is rough as boots but The WarZ is far far worse.

@9 are you fucking kidding? ~ you think the graphics look better?

The screenshots they released on the steam store page look worse than DayZ, and they’re not even an accurate reflection of the game. In-game it looks ~ MUCH ~ worse.

    Just look ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtKAm3nzg6I

@15: It looks better. Just the Zombies alone are superior to anything in DayZ.

Hehe so much hate about this game from the DayZ players on all forums.

I have been playing this game since about two month, got in the alpha for only 13 euros.

Honestly DayZ has so many bugs/problems/hackers (and no its not free to play) that its currently is no fun playing.

WarZ also has problems but far less and it is working well.

I think in the end when DayZ releases the stand alone, all the bugs are gone and vac anti cheat system is implemented etc it will be the better game.

But WarZ is not the horrible scam game everyone says, its a cheap and fun survival shooter focused on pvp.

If you dont like it, they even give you your money back (not with the steam version).

Its that typical internet cluster fuck where everyone jumps the bandwagon without even playing the game.

Wow a subscription PLUS micro transactions?!? And they want to hold you at gunpoint for something basic like respawning, are you kidding me??

Maybe Hammerpoint doesn’t understand the concept of a subscription fee.. it’s something people pay so they DON’T have pay micro transactions.. or are you guys reshaping the landscape on the opposite end of the spectrum of F2P and seeing how much you can make people spend on it?

Unbelievable. Seriously, i want to know the EXACT genius that thought that master plan up.

There are some good things that might come out of this.
If we’re lucky Valve will actually start caring about its customors and just simply try a game before they sell it ^^

It doesn’t really matter how low the amount is, charging people just to play the game they already bought, and for a feature that costs the developer absolutely nothing, is absolutely bonkers.

It doesn’t matter if it’s one cent, making people get out their credit card just to play, after they bought the game, is just atrocious.

Hopefully people will be smart enough to throw it on the trash heap. But then again it has zombies, so you know.

@19 It’s not subscription based, it’s just buy to play but with micro transactions.

The main problem people report is being killed by campers in the places where the weapons are, they said it was bad enough when the respawn was just 1 hour, but now I think it may be better, because if the camper is killed he will lost his place. And if you die you still have other characters to play while the other one is respawning. But this charging for respawn instantly is what breaks the system, it would be good if just the raise of time were applied…
