Wii U Network IDs can be transfered to a new console by Nintendo
Nintendo of America has tired to clear up a bit of confusion surrounding the transfer of online IDs for Wii U consoles owners. According to NOA, while Wii U users are unable to transfer Network IDs between consoles, or even sign-in on a different console, the use of Network IDs on “other devices” will be possible “in the future.” Should your Wii U break or sprout legs and go on a city destroying rampage – no worries: just wrangle the unruly system, toss it in a box, and send it off to Nintendo – not the retailer you purchased it from.
“Nintendo of America’s repair process includes the transferring of the Nintendo Network ID to a new Wii U console if a replacement system is needed,” an NOA rep told Kotaku.

Because paying to send a dead, out-of-warranty system to Nintendo and waiting for them to act is so much easier than transferring the ID myself in a few minutes on a website?

@2 It says in the statement they will also transfer your digital content back over. I think that is what you asked.

This is a bit shit. If a console breaks in the first year here in the UK some retailers will simply exchange directly for a brand new one (with a new 12 month warranty from that point) – Currys for example. That sort of thing isn’t much help if you can’t transfer your id and paid for content.
This doesn’t fit very nicely with consumer rights here in the UK too.

@4: yeah they have to sort it out. it´s good that you at least can keep your id and purchases this way, but they have to work on it. in the end it should work just like psnxbl id´s. i´m sure in a year or so it´ll be just like that. i hope. i´d still enjoy the system if not but i think nintendo has to improve on this, especially if they want to encourage people to download stuff from the e-shop.

Wasn’t there a game where you had to send Nintendo your memory card if you wanted the patch to remove the game-breaking bug?
I like Nintendo, but c’mon!
Have they learned NOTHING? Do they have anyone over there that has any clue how the internet works?!
