Wii U Japan launch: Nintendo shifts over 300,000 consoles

Wii U launched in Japan over the weekend. Famitsu is reporting that Nintendo sold over 300,000 consoles across the launch. Check out the facts and figures below.

According to Famitsu and Enterbrain - by way of GI.biz - Nintendo sold 308,570 Wii U consoles at launch, and that New Super Mario Bros. U was the leading title with 55% of consumers buying the game with their console, followed by Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, which saw 36% of buyer's splashing out on the game at the same time.

Mario sold 170,563 copies, while Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate shifted 110,159 units. Together the Wii U sold less than its predecessor did at its Japanese launch, which shifted 371,936 units in 2006.

PS2 remains the king of Japanese hardware launches however, as Famitsu's list of top-selling Japan launches suggests:

  • PS2: 630,552
  • GBA: 611,504
  • NDS: 441,485
  • Wii: 371,936
  • 3DS: 371,326
  • PSV: 321,407
  • Wii U: 308,570

By comparison, Wii U launches in other territories saw sales of 40,000 units in its first 48 hours across the UK, and 400,000 in the States.
