Wii U Japan launch: Nintendo shifts over 300,000 consoles

Wii U launched in Japan over the weekend. Famitsu is reporting that Nintendo sold over 300,000 consoles across the launch. Check out the facts and figures below.

According to Famitsu and Enterbrain – by way of GI.biz – Nintendo sold 308,570 Wii U consoles at launch, and that New Super Mario Bros. U was the leading title with 55% of consumers buying the game with their console, followed by Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, which saw 36% of buyer’s splashing out on the game at the same time.

Mario sold 170,563 copies, while Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate shifted 110,159 units. Together the Wii U sold less than its predecessor did at its Japanese launch, which shifted 371,936 units in 2006.

PS2 remains the king of Japanese hardware launches however, as Famitsu’s list of top-selling Japan launches suggests:

  • PS2: 630,552
  • GBA: 611,504
  • NDS: 441,485
  • Wii: 371,936
  • 3DS: 371,326
  • PSV: 321,407
  • Wii U: 308,570

By comparison, Wii U launches in other territories saw sales of 40,000 units in its first 48 hours across the UK, and 400,000 in the States.

Exactly what was expected. Ok numbers for 1st week.But most consoles lose most of the momentum going to week 2 and forward. A clearer picture will be available in january.
But ninty certainly isn’t helping the cause as I don’t think any wiiu has any games slated for jan in japan. Pretty bad support for a new console.

I’m pretty sure those numbers represent a weekend of sales rather than a full week.

Actually I am pretty sure all those numbers are for 2 days only. I am sure about wiiu and vita at least.

@3 Yeah Vita’s sales are 2 days. It sold about 10k or something the week after that I think!?
